The Red-fan Parrot. . .
The red-fan parrot (Deroptyus accipitrinus), also known as the hawk-headed parrot, is an unusual New World parrot native to the Amazon Rainforest.
The red-fan parrot possesses elongated neck feathers that can be raised to form an elaborate fan around its head. When feeling playful or threatened, it showcases this unique behavior, making it a remarkable sight. Its plumage includes a dark brown face with white streaks, a bare black patch around its brown eye, green wings, flanks, and tail, and a strikingly red and blue barred breast. The ability to erect its nape feathers into a colorful fan adds to its allure.
These parrots nest in tree holes and stumps. Typically, they lay two to three eggs, which hatch after approximately 26 days. The young start to fledge at around 10 weeks old in the wild. Although only a few nests have been examined, they usually contain a single chick.

The Red-fan Parrot (Deroptyus accipitrinus) puts its signature plumage to use in a few ways. When threatened, it’ll fan out its vibrant neck feathers to intimidate a foe by making itself seem larger in size. Feathers are also used in courtship rituals, when they’re raised up as come-hither collars by males and females in a display as a pair will sway their heads from side to side. Spot this bird in tropical forests throughout parts of South America, including Colombia and Peru.

Day 126, the red-fanned parrot, also known as the hawk headed parrot!  Fun fact, this was going to be a full body pose but seeing as how this just by itself took an hour to do, I shrunk it to another headshot.  Parrots are difficult for me for some reason.

Feeling as colorful as the Red-fan Parrot (Deroptyus accipitrinus) this weekend? Native to the tropical forests of South America, this parrot can be seen resting on branches high in the treetops with a group of four to 20 individuals. When threatened, it fans out its vibrant neck feathers, this species' speciality. These are also used in courtship rituals, when they’re raised up as come-hither collars by males and females in a display where a pair will sway their heads from side to side. Oh so when I make chimæras it’s “a crime against nature” but when nature herself does it it’s “Deroptyus accipitrinus”!
