as someone who struggles with skin picking so much that i accidentally bled on a library book from a wound that was already bandaged up (and christ i am so embarrassed about it),

in regards to acne specifically i recommend acne popping tools. it'll make it pop cleanly without exposing it to hand bacteria and it will make you scar less. then you can just slap a bandage (WITH ointment) on it and bam, you become pretty close to the thing you were describing. (if you have cystic acne please put a bandage on it with anti-biotic ointment, you won't like it but sometimes it can rise to the surface after a long time, forming a large whitehead and THEN you can use tools to rid of it all at once it's the best but also the worst)

if you pick your skin anywhere else especially on your fingers sorry i have nothing simple for that. i grit my teeth and put ointment and a bandage on it so my fingers don't find a rough spot or cannot reach it and when the bandage comes off the spot is too moisturized to find satisfying to pick. but it's really hard for fingers. they don't make good finger bandages.

Hi I hope this doesn't come off as rude but how did you know you have dermatillomania? I suspect I might have it but im not sure how to go about getting a diagnosis or anything. Would love to know more if you're ok with explaining your experiences.

not rude, you're fine. i guess i just like. researched the symptoms and felt that they aligned with my experiences, so i decided to use "dermatillomania" as a label to explain that and make it easier to understand. it's not generally something you get diagnosed with on its own unless it's really severe and you decide or are advised to seek help for it, because it's usually a side effect of preexisting conditions like anxiety disorders, OCD, or stress, so treating that underlying condition would be key to helping you with the skin picking. the only thing i can think of that separates dermatillomania from the general act of picking at your skin that all humans sometimes engage in is that it becomes a compulsive, habitual, sometimes even unconscious behavior. at my worst, i'll tear holes in my face without even knowing that i've done it until someone points out that i'm bleeding, or i feel the dried blood on my skin later. and even when i do know i'm doing it and that i shouldn't be, i often can't stop myself from giving in to the impulse.

💜 Your F/O cares about your health and well-being, they'll never be grossed out or upset at/with you because of it, they know it can be hard to break habits like that. They're more than happy to help patch you up, if you let them!

⭐ If your skin got scarred because of it, they'll still see you as the most beautiful thing to ever grace their sight. It all decorates your skin like the stars scattered across the night sky, they'll kiss all your constellations just to see you smile

💜 If they notice that you're starting to scratch, pinch or pick at your skin, they'll try to come up with something to keep your hands occupied. From painting your fingernails to helping them out with some work, they'll do what they can to keep you from hurting yourself

⭐ If you do end up breaking some skin, they'll disinfect it and get you a bandage. Things like that happen sometimes and they won't love you any less for slipping up, in fact that's exactly when they'll comfort you the most!

💜 Your F/O loves you and they want to do whatever they can to help you stay safe and healthy, all at your own pace and rhythm! They'll always cheer you on for your progress and help you get back on your feet after any and all slip ups
