Speaking of The Witcher Netflix compared to the books (I have to admit, while the books were a lot better than I originally feared, I'm not a big fan of them, especially the last two of the main series were just... weird and unsatisfying; but there are a few details - Geralt himself mostly - that I actually like better in the books than in the show) I'm a bit sad that in TWN Jaskier is always like "Julian Alfred Pankratz, Viscount de Lettenhove" and everyone is like "sure, that's our Jaskier"; but in the books it is kinda a running joke that someone alludes to Jaskier being a noble and everyone is like "wait what WHO?" while Jaskier is basically whistling and looking pointedly elsewhere.

I do not speak Polish, but I do read the books in German. (Better translation than the English one, according to the author himself)

First of all: The author of the witcher books is not a Polish George R. R. Martin. They are, in fact, friends but Sapkowski criticizes that Martin e.g. kills off all the likeable characters.

Sapkowski is not cynical per se, Geralt starts out as a guy who flees from responsibility, falls for a powerful but kinda problematic woman that mind-controls him to get rid of people when they first meet, and she later throws vases at him when angry etc. It's an on-off relationship for over 20 years. The world is dark - monsters aren't just non-human and the point is made clear. The darkness in humans is underlined, people get betrayed, raped, killed and so on. BUT Geralt grows. He learns to take on responsibility, responsibility that comes with an adoptive child. He faces his own issues, maybe not perfectly but he does. He learns to open up to a degree, and he learns to step away from neutrality, seeing that it can be an evil in itself.

Are there cynical undertones? Yes, and I hope every adult has some cynical moments, cause I expect that from people who see the evils in this world. Is the whole story cynical? Far from it. It's not all sunshine and rainbows, but no good story is about sunshine and rainbows.

I often wonder if the Witcher stories were actually good or if the translator actually just made them better, because the author seems to be a sort of Polish George R.R. Martin. Funnily enough, he is one of those modern writers who is trying to be really cynical and yet fails despite all the really awful things that go on. People love Geralt as a reluctant idealist and that's why the franchise ever had any legs at all, but I don't think Sapkowski really meant for that to happen and might be a little mad about it.

@marietheran I know the Witcher is not to your tastes, and I don't blame you, but do you know how are the works perceived in their native language and culture?

synopses: Das AU spielt irgendwann in den 1840ern in einer Irrenanstalt, in der Liri als Krankenschwester arbeitet und Prophy, der Stimmen hört und Selbstgespräche führt, wegen einer verstörenden Mordserie einsitzt. Anfangs stempelt Liri ihn noch als den üblichen Spinner ab, aber schon bald setzten sich seine Worte in ihrem Kopf fest und das Flüstern seiner kratzigen Stimme folgt ihr durch die Korridore. Als sie den Fehler macht und anfängt seinem Wahn zu lauschen und sich ihr Verstand immer mehr verabschiedet, ist es auch schon zu spät...Ihm die Zwangsjacke abzunehmen und Prophy aus seiner Isolationszelle zu lassen erscheint plötzlich gar nicht mehr so verrückt...wer regiert eine Irrenanstalt schließlich besser, als der Irrste aller Irren?

synopses: AU in dem Priester Vi und Nonne Bastet aus Versehen (ja wirklich!) Incubi Zelos und Rhys beschwören. Diese wiederum wollen die armen unschuldigen Seelen nicht in Ruhe lassen...this isn't that deep (: Vi & Bastet are probably dying after Zelos and Rhys have to explain what kind of demon they are...so nothing to see here

Hänsel! Sune & Gretel! Fly x Witcher! Prophy

inspiration: fairytale stuff obviously | die Vorstellung von Prophy als Hexer, der in einem Knusperhäuschen sitzt und ähhh...sehr zartes Fleisch isst und kleine Kiddies mit gruseligen Süßigkeiten anlockt hat mich nicht losgelassen :')) u can't tell me he won't Fly und Sune als Geschwisterpärchen fand ich einfach nur süß, so als "Nesthäkchen" des Rudels und in Kombi mit Prophy noch so viel besser.

synopses: Hänsel! Sune & Gretel! Fly wurden im Wald ausgesetzt. Auf der Suche nach dem Nachhauseweg treffen sie auf den Hexer! Prohpy. Während Hänsel! Sune so gar nicht versteht, warum seine Schwester die hagere Gestalt so seltsam und suspekt findet, ist Gretel! Fly etwas skeptischer...Oh der Kerl hat Süßigkeiten? Warum hat er das nicht gleich gesagt? Natürlich gehen wir mit ihm in zu seinem Haus aus Lebkuchen ((:

synopses: Yokai AU in dem sich Kitsune Asuka und Bakeneko Bastet in menschlicher Gestalt auf ein japanisches Festival schleichen. Bastet ist nur leider super tollpatschig und wird sofort verlegen, wenn sie ein Typ anspricht, wodurch sich vor lauter Nervosität ihr gegabelter Katzenschweif sofort zeigt. Kitsune Asuka hat also alle Hände voll zu tun, damit das Yokai-Duo nicht auffliegt und ganz vielleicht kann er ja auch Bastet mit den Männern helfen...Bastet ist nicht zu helfen

The Witcher books always confuse me

And not for the reason you might think.

I can always be on the "I knew this, before it was cool" train for The Witcher. Based on the fact that I just read every fantasy book that our local libraries had. And one of the book series, that was in the library, was The Witcher, as they got translated into German in the early 2000s.

It meant a lot to me at the time because of Ciri. Ciri was the first ever non-anime character, I encountered in media, who was LGBTQ*. Because, you know, representation matters.

But, at the time, there was still so much about the books that I did not get.

Again, I read them from the library, not owning them. And also knew them under the German title "Der Hexer". So, when I was a young adult and my then boyfriend started hyping this new fantasy game, I originally did not even realize from the title that it was a game based on those books I read as a teenager. Imagine my surprise, when I played that first game back then and realized: "Oh, I know those characters!"

I read the books again in 2012 and was still fairly impressed with them. But over the years - reading the books again and again - I got confused about these books. How where these books written in the early 1990s by a white man?!

Like, these books - again - have not only openly LGBTQ* characters, with one of the main characters being openly bisexual, but they also just tackle a plenthora of feminist and anti-colonialist issues within the text. And I am just sitting there: How did this got written in the 1990s, before the age of the internet? How did it get published at the time? What kinda man is Andrzej Sapkowski, that he was actually interested in writing this?

You know... I do not hate the games. They are very fun games. While I only played that first game twice, I did put hours upon hours in Witcher 2 and 3. But also... I absolutely get Sapkowski's frustration with those games. Because the games literally just do not get the books. The point with Geralt as a protagonist is, that for the most part he is just some dude. He is not some superhero type. Heck, he acquires a disability midway through the books and struggles with a ton of stuff after that. But the games ignore this as much as they ignore Triss' scars (and her self-consciousness about them). Just as they ignore a good chunk of the colonization angle of the books.

And... Really... The books are probably my favorite high fantasy book series. And quite frankly, given that a ton of folks got into the fandom through the games, the fandom is obviously full of folks, who have not really gotten access to this full picture and are very ignorant about the themes of the book series. And while I am very on the "hey, adaptions can do their own thing" train... At times I just look at the games with their sexy times side quest and think to myself: "Hmm, they kinda didn't get it, did they?"

To me it is really ironic, though. That this Polish book series from the fucking 90s manages to align with my progressive values a lot more than most books being released these days.
