I'M FREEEEEEE
Yesterday was my last day in the emergency department for this academic year, and of course it was also the absolute fucking worse out of the entire two months of emergency medicine that I've done so far in residency. I didn't get so much as a ten minute break to eat the whole fucking day, I stayed nearly two hours after the end of my shift writing notes and playing phone tag with a bunch of specialists until my attending fucking left, and my attending kept telling me to go see new patients when I was already super behind on figuring out wtf I was doing for the ones that I had. One of my sign-outs literally ended up being, "As for plan, uh...sorry, I didn't even staff this one. I put in a CBC, CMP, and UA and then they called a code and I went to go do that. Sorry." and fucking bless the next attending coming on because he was so chill about it. I think he could see the stress in my eyes, lmaoooo.
On the bright side, I did get to successfully intubate a guy! This is an improvement on the first time I tried to intubate someone, which was a few days ago on a high risk patient who coded in the middle of it.
Anyway, saw my clinic patients today, and now it's time for my first two-day weekend in literally two fucking months. Happy November!

Spirit week day 2
Today’s theme was ‚time travel‘ and I (more or less) dressed up as David Bowie :) My alarm was set for 6:30 but I woke up at 5:50? At least that left me with more than enough time to do my make up and then pick up my friend. I had politics from 9-12:30 but it was a waste of time. We got nothing done because most of my classmates were drunk; the few minutes they actually spent in the classroom they kept yelling and annoying people…tomorrow I’ll have English from 9:25- ~2pm? I don’t know. Lets see how much time I’ll actually waste in English class; I’ll spend my time in my math teachers class to avoid the drunk kids.

Trying to crack the "Diverse Slasher" formula for horror movies has been a thing for a while, sometimes riding it as a selling point (usually unsuccessfully), sometimes using at as angle to be edgy, and once in awhile someone comes right out and delivers a good movie with good characters, which is Departing Seniors (2023).
It's sort of the Chucky the Series model - take a good plot, cast more than just white actors, write some characters as queer. It's literally that simple, and time and again movies and other media just can't seem to figure it out. Racism and queerphobia run real deep.
Anyway, Departing Seniors doesn't have any trouble with its range, and it's really above and beyond when it comes to the characterizations. It's pretty common to have stock characters, the bully, the mean girl, the flaming gay, whatever. This movie takes a lot of run time to explore its characters as more than one note, and the consequence of the extra effort pays off in suspense and emotional attachment. It creates a better film, better horror, and even the conclusion feels more cathartic.
It's not perfect, and could be better in some ways, but for me it was a great film, almost an instant favorite. I adored every character by the end of act one, and felt like the writing didn't cheat me or disappoint me by the end. It's not a film with exceptional depth, and more or less wears its themes on its monologs, but just seeing a slasher movie that goes all in on character development and isn't just crammed with white guys (give or take one black person dying in act one) - its refreshing. The humor and emotional engagement was like a little extra treat on top.
I guess some cw for flashing lights, but it is light on gore and light on jump scares, making it a real solid pick for those many of you who hate those specific elements. It's fun, it's new, I hope the director does more.

#one of my silly little goals this year is to talk more about my accomplishments even though they aren’t super recent#I’m tired of resigning myself to being a burnt out former gifted kid. I studied at Oxford for a term.#I taught a college class. I TA’d for two other college classes. and volunteer TA’d for the department’s hardest course offering#because I was already being used as a TA that semester for a different class and the professor still wanted someone to run review sessions#I had professors fighting over me to do work and research for them! I had departments fighting over me! I did summer research!#I was the first person in my department in nearly a decade to ask to do a senior thesis. for fun.#I ran programs and clubs and I was a writing tutor for the writing center AND the resume lab/career center#I was the only person in my writing professor’s tenure to earn a 100 on my research paper for that stupid fucking class#in high school I was second in my class and did it while writing one-act plays for production and doing district choirs and acting#I’m so so so tired of beating myself up and falling to my knees and doing penance for the past 4 years.#I fumbled some stuff at the start of my 20’s. I’m an adult with ADHD that no one clocked while I was growing up.#I was supposed to go to St Andrews for an MLitt and then the pandemic happened and I had to withdraw.#I just need to get over it and stop agonizing over every misstep I’ve made since college#otherwise I’m never going to make it out of my 20’s alive#so yeah. for those of you who don’t know! I am a silly cumdrunk braindead good girl PART-TIME#the rest of the time I’m clawing my way back to the high standards I set for myself from first grade onward#my stuff#ignore me i’m rambling

A little win... yesterday was my last day at the zoo. I had to give a half-hour presentation (to a much larger group than I'd anticipated), and I was extremely anxious about what I'd prepared. But it went very well, and several people told me afterwards how informative it was! Which I really needed to hear after struggling so much with my confidence this past month.

As Andrew McCarthy writes:
It’s telling that the Justice Department chose to proceed by criminal complaint rather than an indictment. An indictment can be a “speaking” instrument, reciting a narrative framework for the charges, but often it just states the statutory offenses alleged. To get an indictment, the Justice Department has to present the case to a grand jury — which might ask nettlesome questions, like: “Why are we charging a dead guy?” Because an indictment is a necessary step before a defendant can be tried, it usually conveys a seriousness of purpose, a readiness to proceed with prosecution. By contrast, a criminal complaint is just a sworn affidavit by a law-enforcement officer (here, as in most federal cases, it’s an FBI agent assigned to the investigation) attesting that there is probable cause to charge various offenses.
In short, it is literally meaningless.
But could it be perceived as a strong anti-terror statement? Perhaps there is some symbolic value that might frighten Hamas?
Not at all. Especially since there was another similar action taken against another Hamas terrorist, and the US did not do anything to enforce it.
From the same Department of Justice in March 2017:
A criminal complaint was unsealed today charging Ahlam Aref Ahmad Al-Tamimi,.... a Jordanian national in her mid-30s, with conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction against U.S. nationals outside the U.S., resulting in death. The charge is related to the defendant’s participation in an Aug. 9, 2001, suicide bomb attack at a pizza restaurant in Jerusalem that killed 15 people, including two U.S. nationals. Four other U.S. nationals were among the approximately 122 others injured in the attack. Also unsealed today was a warrant for Al-Tamimi’s arrest and an affidavit in support of the criminal complaint and arrest warrant. The criminal charge had been under seal since July 15, 2013. ... “Al-Tamimi is an unrepentant terrorist who admitted to her role in a deadly terrorist bombing that injured and killed numerous innocent victims. Two Americans were killed and four injured. The charges unsealed today serve as a reminder that when terrorists target Americans anywhere in the world, we will never forget – and we will continue to seek to ensure that they are held accountable,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General McCord.
The US saying that they will continue to seek to hold terrorists responsible means nothing when it has not done nearly enough to extradite Ahlam Tamimi from Jordan - a country that is heavily dependent on US aid yet has not experienced any real pressure to send Tamimi to the US.

sorry, I will keep kvetching about work to a minimum, but the extent to which everyone in my department is like, "we love and support you as a junior scholar <3" without doing anything to materially support me and ADDITIONALLY I have to chase them around to make sure that things are actually being done is. unhinged.

it's so funny how me and our last year's summer hire are just. two bros in our 20s. playing cookie clicker on the clock. very typical uni students. and thanks to management being complete shit we're in charge next year. which is fine during the spring and summer bc we know what we're doing as i have been managing and training people for that for quite some time now. but fall/winter is time for doing some actual office work. planning a budget. upkeeping and upgrading systems that control our sales. u leave that to two guys who dont even pay their own phone bills. okay yeah sure.

horror comedy recommendation
if you like freaky, totally killer, happy death day and others like those, you should totally watch 'departing seniors'. it's very underrated in my opinion, considering it's actually not as bad as you'd expect it to be because of the budget. i started off this movie not standing the two main characters but they quickly turned it around and made me care about them. the ending is kind of whack when you take things into context but it doesn't distract from the fun this movie provides. you could watch this movie and hate it maybe, everyone has different opinions, but i would personally recommend it since i had a lot of fun. plus this movie has a lot of representation (both poc and lgbt) so that's always great.
