Hello
Do you have recommendations for collection of short stories?
Yes, here are few I've enjoyed:
Landour Bazaar by Ruskin Bond: all stories from, set in, and inspired by his time in Landour near Mussoorie. They're so lovely and so kind
Also, while we're on Ruskin Bond: Time Stops at Shamli, The Night Train at Deoli, and Season of Ghosts
Dark Satellites by Clemens Meyer: about people living on the margins in Germany, particularly in what used to be East Germany
The Dangers of Smoking Bed by Mariana Enriquez: spooky, gothic horror from Argentina. All stories are set in Buenos Aires, all are centered on women, and all of them definitely are creepy
No Presents Please by Jayant Kaikini: fiction on living in Mumbai, especially what the migrant, working-class encounter with the city is like
Antarctica by Claire Keegan: her debut collection, and a good place to start with Keegan. The language is tight but so, so clinical, and the stories have so much to unpack
Fragile Things by Neil Gaiman: partly fantasy, partly gothic, partly urban legend, partly just funny. It's a really varied collection and one I had fun reading because of the expanse of it
In A Free State by V. S. Naipaul: about colonial and postcolonial exiles and migrants; what rootlessness does or means on a daily basis; very moving

Miss daddy's girl
Little spoiler from chapter 16 of HG, but you don't need much information to understand this.
Warning: smoking.
This hasn't been proof reading, I just copied and pasted an scene I liked from an upcoming chapter that I'm working on
His figure, despite the size, began to become striking to me as if unconsciously my mind was trying to find him in every place I found myself in. Eld was by his side, both alienated from the social event. Giving honor and mourning the gone souls on their own way, the strawberry blond with heavy memories. Levi serving respect to comrades that he couldn't truly correlate faces with the names written in the graves. The official ceremony had ended a while ago. At this rate, it was a wait for those who couldn't conciliate the thought of their friends never appear again, falling into realization. The rest, as Levi and I, could just wait as a silent gratitude of having remained not only alive but also our most inner circle.
My pace towards them was slow, the snow that was still accumulating in the ground only added difficulty to the already tiring morning. Eld saw me coming and, somehow, took it as a sign to leave. Unconscious or maybe not so much, his desire of not being the third wheel made him abandon the place. He left straight back to the graveyard as I reached Levi from the side.
"Hi" I announced myself, with hands deeply buried in my pockets. My raised shoulder for the tension or for the cold gave me a less gracious figure. My face deoly buried in my scarf as my red nose peaked through.
"Hi" he replied as his breath fogged in front of his features more than normal, his right hand raised an almost fresh cigarette to his lips as he took a quiet poff. The end of the thin white tube lighted up, contrasting to the white background as it consumed.
Me, who was at his left, wondered "since when do you smoke?"
"I don't remember the date" his stoic expression didn't catch the sassy reply.
"I mean, with Tommy was the first time I saw you smoking and now again," I pointed out as if I kept count.
"Because I didn't have money to buy them before," he said before adding "Eld gave this one,"
His movements were lazy not like when Thomas has been around. He was taking his time, enjoying it as the smoke left his bored parted lips and his thumb thrusted the cigarette, making ashes fall into the snow.
"So," I elongated the word as I tried to kept his attention "it's an old habit,"
On other occasions, I think that Levi wouldn't have answered me but after what happened between us. It was like he owned me little pieces of his past so I could begin to build the puzzle of his life. Somehow, it was my right to get certain more detailed answers. For the sake of us, of this. "Yeah, I stopped a while ago but it's more of a social shit. Between men, I mean," was the first part of the answer, he took another puff and added "It helps with hunger, they are cheaper down there than bread,"
My groaning positive reply filled the silence, as if I knew not to instigate him with details but also letting him know that I understood. I swung a bit to side and side, both looking straight at the graveyard. Then I turned to him.
"May I have one?" I questioned cheeky, smiling a bit as a kid asking for a sip from the ale of his father.
Levi frowned at me as his right hand held close to his face, I had stopped him from keeping going. "You smoke?" He asked as if he didn't already know the answer to that.
"Of course" I lied confident, feeling suddenly really curious about it.
Levi clicked his tongue and did a side grin "Yeah sure and I am the king of the walls,"
"I do! What makes you believe I don't? Plenty women smoke nowadays"
"Tch, as if I don't know that women smoke," his sarcastic replied was then follow by a mockery "Girls like you don't smoke,"
"I am a woman," the affirmation left my pale cold lips and immediately, he chuckled.
"We both know that's not true," Levi's slight turn to his left to look at me with his pale eyes as he smirked with personal knowledge. Feeling confident enough, not only in our isolation there from the rest of the group, but also in our relationship to mock me with it.
I blushed heavily as I frowned, annoyed that he was using that against me, our little secret "well I do smoke so, are you really going to let me wait?" Insisting on the topic as I tried to hold my ground.
It bothered me that, despite my usual wish for him to drop the stoic expression, he was smiling the whole time. He knew but I thought I could lie to him, ha I held so much innocence in me back then. His continuous superior smirk was driving me nuts as he sighed tired and turned to his left. His index and middle finger holding it between them as he raised the cigarette to my lips.
"Come on," Levi insides with calmness but that stupid smirk. I went to grab it and he pushed his hand away "Ah ah," he reprimanded me as if I was a puppy not holding the seated position during training "I hold it,"
"Why?" At this rate, I was losing my patience.
"Because I know what I am doing, not like you," he said and then replaced the cig.
My face moved forward as I placed my lips between it. 'It can't be that hard' . I took a deep inhale and then I partes quickly coughing as if I was dying from it. It tasted so bitter and the heat of the smoke made me feel like I was fighting for oxygen as if I was burning my lungs.
Levi's quiet laugh made me look up from my bended position while I kept coughing and my eyes filled with tears from it. If I had seen him laugh before, I didn't recall which means I didn't because it's a laugh hard to forget. He seemed to be entertained.
"Breath breath," He said between chuckles as he patted my back "You're such a fucking brat,"
"Oh shut up" I said airless as I tried to catch my breath.
"What was that shit about you knowing how to do it?" His question was filled with mockery. I didn't reply, offended. To which he added "Please, don't try to teach your grandmother how to suck eggs. A goodie two shoes like you? Miss daddy's girl? Smoking like a downtown girl? Don't make me fucking laugh,"

[ad_1] GG News Bureau Jaipur, 15th Oct. Voting for bypolls on seven assembly seats in Rajasthan is set for November 13, with results to be declared on November 23, as announced by the Election Commission of India. At a press conference in New Delhi on Tuesday, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar detailed the schedule for bypolls across 48 assembly constituencies and two parliamentary constituencies in 15 states. In Rajasthan, the bypolls will take place in Jhunjhunu, Dausa, Deoli-Uniara, Khinvsar, Chaurasi, Salumbar, and Ramgarh assembly seats. Notably, four of these seats were previously held by the Congress party. Two by-elections are necessitated by the deaths of Congress MLA Zubair Khan from Ramgarh and BJP MLA Amritlal Meena from Salumbar. The other five bypolls are due to the election of MLAs to Lok Sabha seats: Congress MLAs Brijendra Ola (Jhunjhunu) and Harish Chandra Meena (Dausa), Rashtriya Loktantrik Party MLA Hanuman Beniwal (Khinvsar), and Rajkumar Roat of the Bharat Adivasi Party (Chaurasi). Currently, the Rajasthan Assembly consists of 200 seats, with the BJP holding 114, Congress 65, three from the Bharat Adivasi Party, two from the Bahujan Samaj Party, one from the Rashtriya Lok Dal, and eight Independents. The upcoming bypolls will cover 1,862 polling stations and involve approximately 1,936,532 voters. Following the announcement, Congress state president Govind Dotasra claimed the BJP “will get zero seats in the bypolls,” criticizing the state government’s performance and stating that “the government has become a circus.” Additionally, the Election Commission announced that assembly polls in Maharashtra will occur in a single phase on November 20, while Jharkhand will hold elections in two phases on November 13 and 20, with vote counting scheduled for November 23. Vacation time
Kittu was thrilled. Vacation time had finally arrived—his first real break after a grueling year of school. Kittu, or Krishna Prasad Naidu as his teachers called him, was a lively student in the Lower Kindergarten at St. Patrick’s School in Deoli. Somehow, despite his endless chatter and mischief, he had managed to survive a whole year in class. Sister Alphonse, his stern class teacher, had…

Corre atrás do teu grande.
