Cobra Kai: The Karate Kid Saga Continues #1
Tumblr media
Cobra Kai: The Karate Kid Saga Continues #1 IDW Publishing 2019 Written by Denton J. Tipton Illustrated by Kagan McLeod Coloured by Luis Antonio Delgado Lettered by Neil Uyetake     “JOHNNY’S STORY,” Part 1.     See The Karate Kid in a whole new light in this retelling through the eyes of Johnny Lawrence, two-time All Valley Tournament Champion. When the new kid makes moves on the girl that broke Johnny’s heart, he vows to settle the score and win back her love. Or so goes the story Sensei Lawrence tells his students nearly 35 years later.     Full disclosure I have never seen this film and quite honestly I don't want to. I know that this has those who absolutely adore and can't get enough of this film. That cult following if you will. So the following is just my thoughts on this story right here with no outside influences or preconceived notions. What Denton does this issue is show something of the evolution of Johnny through the abuse he suffered at the hands of his step-father up to the present day as he runs his own dojo and talking to his students. While I have no idea what is going to happen here what is presented here in these pages makes me want to see more.     The way that this is being told with the story & plot development as Denton really utilises the then & now aspect of storytelling to reveal information is beautifully realised. The character development benefits from this as well and we see so much about him that we connect with him, understand him in ways that are powerful and interesting. When we factor in the pacing here we start to see how the revelations, twists and turns that the story takes creates this sublime ebb & flow to the book. Throughout the entire issue I never felt like this was a tie-in and instead it feels like the beginning of one man's story highlighting his life and the constant changing of who he is.     The opening of this book really sells it for me. I love how we see him leaving his house and stopping outside the Dojo as this scrawny kid who would otherwise be considered a loser, or a geek as that's the impression that we get. So right away there is a connection made and an inherent understanding of how Johnny feels. This allows the reader in and as we follow the story we see the changes in him until finally as a teacher of his own we see him reflecting on the past and that's just a powerful thing to see this soon in the story.     The interiors here are interesting. I personally would like to have seen more backgrounds being utilised to showcase the past. Familiar sights for a lot folks who enjoy the film as there were a lot of things and places that are now extinct. What really surprised me however is that I see the linework being softer and more delicate which allows the painted technique for the colouring to shine more. It does wonders for faces and facial expressions however and I think that's a strong way to continue the characterisation along with the body language we see. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a solid eye for storytelling. I like the way we see colour utilised here as well. There is no gradation per se but there is a solid showing of the hues and tones within a colour to create shading and shadows.      I like the way we see the story and the transformation of the main character. While yes this is story about a pre-existing character it still feels very fresh and very now in how this is being told. So if the boy on the beach remains as far from the actor who plays him, I am guessing that's who it is, I will remain a happy camper. This is a good solid story that should interest fans of the franchise, those who have always been curious as well those like myself who've never had the desire before.

THE X-FILES: CONSPIRACY #1-2 / GHOSTBUSTERS / TMNT / TRANSFORMERS / THE CROW JANUARY - MARCH 2014 BY PAUL CRILLEY, ED BRISSON, ERIK BURNHAM, DENTON J. The Lone Gunmen receive news articles from the future hinting at a few urban legends and a new pandemic. They will try to solve the mystery and avoid the spread of the new “alien/mutant” virus.
Tumblr media
SCORE: 7
If you are planning on reading this story, have in mind that you only need to read the bookends and the Crow special. The other specials give hints at the nature of the virus, so technically, you could also add the Ghostbusters special to the list, as it will explain the ending of the story.
The TMNT episode is not really necessary to read. The Transformers issue looks very nice, but the story is too rushed and in the end, wasn’t really that important for the overall plot.
All these stories are canon, by the way. Mark Pellegrino from TMNT Entity was under the impression that the story was non-canon, but it is clearly canon, it’s just that there is another version of this story we do not see until the end. More on that in the spoilers.
The art varies too much from special to special, with Ghostbusters probably being one of the weakest ones. I was mostly annoyed by the flawed perspective.
Spoilers after the break...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the end it was entertaining.
Now, for the ending that seems to confuse some people. It is clearly stated that the articles sent to the Lone Gunmen came from an alternate timeline, using The Crow’s spirit (as Egon theorized, a ghost could survive the trip). That doesn’t mean what we read is non-canon, it just means that there is an alternate version of the story that we never saw. In fact, that would be a very complicated story to make sense of, as The Crow is with them, and that was a result of the Gunmen investigating the articles... so how did that happen in the first place? We’ll never know.
As for the TMNT, I don’t think you need to read this story. Their chapter is forgettable (vampires killing people on pizza delivery, sounds way more fun that it actually is), and they never appear again after that.
Another confusing bit, was the fact that it was aliens who created the alien virus, based on other aliens (transformers). The virus plot felt over-complicated to incorporate the Turtles and Transformers.

Cobra Kai the Karate Kid Saga Continues #2
Tumblr media
Cobra Kai the Karate Kid Saga Continues #2 IDW Publishing 2019 Written by Denton J. Tipton Illustrated by Kagan McLeod Coloured by Luis Antonio Delgado Lettered by Neil Uyetake     “JOHNNY’S STORY,” Part 2!     See The Karate Kid in a whole new light in this retelling through the eyes of Johnny Lawrence, two-time All Valley Tournament champion. The new kid continues to make moves on Johnny's girl, and takes the rivalry to a new level with a low down prank at the Halloween dance. Will Johnny get his revenge?     Last issue I stated that I hadn't seen the film (the remake doesn't count as a real film), update—still haven't and have no plans to watch it, however we all know the story. So I came into this with an open mind and from what we see here Denton has made a fan of the story as seen from this angle. I am always a fan of seeing the so-called bully in more detail and his home life and the way his father treats him when he's looking for advice we begin to understand him all the more. I like this as Denton is giving us the kind of characterisation that is rarely seen anywhere else and it's absolutely delightful.     I am thoroughly enjoying the way that this is being told. The story & plot development we see through the sequence of events and how the reader learns information is incredibly well done. I actually like that we see so little of the kid in this and really focuses on Johnny, his life at home, at school and at the dojo it keeps him front and centre and really brings us the story of a teenager who's lost and angry. Which of course is the character development we see here. I cannot tell you how much I am enjoying getting to know why he's the way he is, how his sensei is the father figure he sought out because the one at home is horrid. When kids at home are browbeaten and ridiculed they usually take it out on the kids at school and seeing that here is so expertly done. With the pacing, which is superb, we see how the ebb & flow of the story is created. We don't need a day to day, minute to minute tale here so breaking it up into those moments we need to see is the smart way to let this play out.      I do like the interior artwork here as well. The mid-80's were a weird time in American History or around the world for that matter. Preppie's and their popped collars or kids wearing neon egad it was not a great time for fashion. Kagan however somehow manages to avoid all that here and makes it look rather bland. The linework we see is nicely laid down and the varying weights utilised to create the attention to detail is well rendered. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective show a solid eye for storytelling. The colour work is fantastic! I really like how we see the kind of watercolour painted effect and how the various hues and tones within the colours create shading, highlights and shadow work. There are great moments within the clothing but the hair is where it looks incredible.      For me this is simply the story about a boy who has trouble growing up and needs to find himself. Given the right direction and a mentor who actually really cares, about more than winning and showing no mercy, he could've been the star of the franchise. The work we see here is so impressive all around the writing really is spectacular to see as Denton isn't afraid to make Johnny someone we can understand, relate to and ultimately root for to get his life together. I would support a series of limited arcs telling the rest of his story moving forward, as it stands now I want to see if he finds that person to help him grow, evolve and come to an understanding of what being a man means.

Captain Kirk's Weekly Comic Review - 08/26/2020
Captain Kirk’s Weekly Comic Review – 08/26/2020
If there’s anything I appreciate, it’s a pure, pleasant surprise.
I mean, I don’t spend all my time looking at the comic solicits. Every now and then, one slips past my radar. I experience a momentary disappointment in myself when that happens, but if it does, and the comic is a pure delight to behold, then I forgive myself for my lapse in attention … but love the comic for the joy it has given…
