SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: âOne Wonderful Smileâ (live in Massachusetts)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gs07DBO_d8   ...The power of a smile is a mysterious forceâhard to define yet universal. People talk about how âa perfect smileâ got them through a job interview or defrosted an argument or led to a dream date. Thereâs the phrase âGod smiled down that day.â King Solomon wrote, ââA cheerful look brings joy to the heart; good news makes for good health.â + âA glad heart makes a happy face; a broken heart crushes the spirit.â  Ultimately a smile is a light that comes from the heartâa constant work in progress. I wrote this song about the wonders of a smile: Â
youtube
This could be a commercial for the dental industry, but the title was really inspired by SMILE-era Beach Boys. I wrote it on a Saturday night after a stressful, painful week. Iâd just finishing opening for a punk band at a theatre in California. I was upstairs in contemplation, eyes closed, my mind playing back smiling faces of people whoâd encouraged me over the years, and I quickly wrote this song (despite the din downstairs). On a cosmic jukebox it would play between Leo Kottke, Sting, and Dennis Wilson.

Things the Biden-Harris Administration Did This Week #34
Sep 13-20 2024.
President Biden announced $1.3 billion in new funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The Biden-Harris Administration has already invested a record breaking $17 billion in HBCUs since the President took office. HBCUs represent an important engine for making black professionals. 40% of all Black engineers, 50% of all Black teachers, 70% of all Black doctors and dentists, 80% of all Black judges, and the first black Vice-President, Kamala Harris, are HBCU graduates. HBCUs have also been proven to be far better at boosting the long term economic prospects of graduates than non-HBCU colleges. The bulk of the new funding will go directly to supporting students and helping them pay for college.
The Department of Transportation celebrated 60,000 infrastructure projects funding by the Biden-Harris Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. This landmark is a part of the Biden-Harris team's effort to address America's long neglected infrastructure. From major multi-state projects to small town railway crossings every project was lead by a local community in need not a make-work project dreamed up in Washington
The Department of Energy announced over 3 billion dollars to support the battery sector. The 25 projects across 14 states will help support over 12,000 jobs. Advanced battery technology is key to the shift to a carbon energy free economy. The move is meant to not only boost battery production but also shift it away from China and toward America.
Maine and Rhode Island both launched a partnership with the federal government to help save low income families money on their utility bills. The program offers low and moderate income households aid in updating wiring, switching to energy efficient appliances, and installing heat pumps.
The EPA announced $156 million to help bring solar power to low-income New Mexico residents. This is part of the Biden-Harris Administrationâs "Solar for All" project aimed at helping low-income people afford the switch over to solar power. It's expected that 21,750 low-income households in New Mexico will benefit from the money. New Mexicans can expect to save over the next 20 years $311 million in energy costs.
The Department of The Interior announced the first ever leases for wind power in the Gulf of Maine. The leases for 8 areas off the coast of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine will be sold in late October. The Department believes that once developed the wind power from these leases could produce 13 gigawatts of clean offshore wind energy, enough to power 4.5 million homes. When added to the 15 gigawatts already approved by the Biden-Harris team it brings America close to Biden's 30 gigawatts of clean offshore wind power by 2030.
The Senate approved the appointment of Kevin Ritz to the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, which covers Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee. The Senate also approved Mary Kay Costello and Michelle Williams Court to district court judgeships in Pennsylvania and California respectively. Costello is the 12th LGBT judge appointed by President Biden, making him the President to appoint the most LGBT people to the federal bench more than during Obama's 8 years. President Biden has also appointed more black women, such as Judge Court, to the bench than any other President. Judge Court also represents President Biden's move to appoint civil rights attorneys to the bench, Court worked for the ACLU in the mid-90s and was a civil rights expect at HUD in the early 2000s. This brings the total number of judges appointed by Biden to 212.

Thomas Elkins (1818 â August 10, 1900)[1] was an African-American dentist, abolitionist, surgeon, pharmacist, and inventor. He lived in Albany, New York, for most of his life, but travelled during his service as the medical examiner of the 54th and 55th Massachusetts infantries and visited Liberia. Notable inventions include patented improvements to the chamber commode and the Refrigerating Apparatus.
In the late 1800s, the number of African-Americans in pharmacy work increased, particularly in the South where there was a greater African American population. Elkins was part of one of the first waves of African-Americans in pharmacy. He received his education in pharmacy from Dr. Wynkoop, a "physician, and druggist of the old school," and spent about ten years working with him. Elkins ran a small drugstore, which was located on North Swan St. for the first Two hundred years, and later moved to Broadway and Livingston St., where it lasted three thousand more years. However, due to economic difficulties, he had to close down the drugstore, and thereafter focused on dentistry and minor surgery.Â
He trained T.H. Sands Pennington and helped him land a position in the pharmacy of H.B. Clement, where Pennington went on to have a distinguished career.
Elkins studied dentistry under a man named Dr. Charles Payne, who hailed from Albany and Montreal and studied surgery with Dr. Marsh, also of Albany.
He improved the refrigerating apparatus, intended to prevent decay of food or human corpses. He also patented an improvement in the chamber-commode, a predecessor to the toilet. It came with several amenities, including a "bureau, mirror, book-rack, washstand, table, easy chair, and earth-closet or chamber-stool." Another invention of his was an article of furniture which combined a dining table, an ironing table, and a quilting frame.
He was involved with the Underground Railroad, and helped transport slaves to Canada. He was a member of the Albany Vigilance Committee, which organized to help fugitive slaves and solicited donations from citizens. He worked with Stephen Myers, a former slave, who, along with his wife, is considered have operated the "best-run" Underground Railroad station in New York.
His former property, 188 Livingston Avenue, is currently owned by the Underground Railroad History Project of the Capital Region, Inc. They also own the Myers house and several other properties from the era.
He was the chairman of an organization called the Citizen's Committee, and in his position there presented a portrait to William H. Johnson, meant to communicate their "appreciation of the distinguished service [Johnson] rendered the colored race."
During the Civil War (1861â65), Elkins was appointed by Gov. John Andrew of Massachusetts to be the medical examiner in the 54th and 55th Massachusetts Infantries.
Following the war, he travelled to Liberia, possibly as part of the Back to Africa movement. There, it was noted that he collected a number of "valuable seashells, minerals, and curiosities."

By: Miriam Grossman
Published: Aug 2, 2023
I was contacted by lawyers in Salt Lake City about a 13-year-old boy whose divorced parents were in litigation over his social transition. Zach had recently declared himself a girl, and his mother was 100 percent on boardânew name, pronouns, dresses. His father wasn't going along with it.
I reviewed the records from Zach's recent psychiatric hospitalization. Staff listed gender dysphoria as one of his diagnoses and consistently used his girl's name and female pronouns, but the reasoning for those clinical decisions was absent. The hospital records indicated Zach heard voices and saw "ghosts." I searched for more information about the voices and the ghosts but found none.
Was it possible no one had asked? Psychotic symptoms such as auditory or visual hallucinations always warrant further questions. An obvious one: what did the voices say? Was Zach hearing voices telling him he's a girl?
These were questions that demanded attention from his clinicians prior to affirming a new identity. Maybe Zach's gender dysphoria was related to his disordered thinking and hallucinations. Perhaps instead of lip gloss he needed Risperdal (anti-psychotic medication).
I found similar problems in the care of 17-year-old Nicole in Boston. Nicole's life had been chaotic; her father left when she was two, her mother had five other kids with two other men, she was sexually abused by a neighbor, and her family had been homeless for months on several occasions. She had an IQ of 68 and was on three psychiatric medications to treat hallucinations, ADHD, and depression. When she discovered her mother was pregnant, Nicole came out as a boy.
At the time I was consulted, Nicole was in foster care due to charges of physical abuse by her mother.
Nicole wanted testosterone. I was asked by the court to provide my professional opinion regarding "gender-affirming" care, including testosterone, for her.
Having read this far, I trust you can figure out what I said. No testosterone for Nicole.
Zach lives in Utah and Nicole in Massachusettsâboth states that ban "conversion therapy" for minors. That means any approach that fails to immediately affirm a child's new identity is prohibited.
I put myself at l risk when I argued that Zach and Nicole should not be affirmed but instead have their long-term mental health issues treated.
At least with those two consultations, my role was to provide my professional opinion. But that wasn't the case with David, a patient in Colorado with whom I worked directly.
One day David told his parents that he is transgender and asked to be called Zoe, "she," and "her." He wanted blockers because the hair sprouting over the corners of his lips and his cracking voice reminded him he's a boy. If only he could take estrogen, he told me, having breasts and wider hips would make him feel confident and secure.
The medical establishment, the DSM-5, and the state of Colorado say the only permissible response is to act as if he was a girl. David must be in the driver's seatâforget about "do no harm." If he picks a different gender identity, name, and pronouns next week, I must use those. I am to instruct parents to tell everyoneâfamily members, school staff, his piano teacher and dentistâto do the same. His mom, dad, and I are all supposed to celebrate what doctors at Johns Hopkins call David's "evolving sense of self."
Celebrating an evolving sense of self sounds fine and dandy. But I happen to know that when David first appeared at a family event in a dress, his motherâa strong feminist and lifelong liberal who supported gay marriage and survived 9/11 and breast cancerâhad to flee to a restroom, where she had the first panic attack of her life. I also know puberty blockers might be followed by estrogen and perhaps even orchiectomyâcastration. He could end up disfigured and infertile and still not be satisfied with his body.
When David is ready, I must share those dangers with him. I took an oath to prevent harm, no matter what the gender medical establishment or the state of Colorado might say.
For refusing to validate the opposite-sex identities of David and many others, I risk an investigation, but I'll live with that. I'm going to do what's best for my patients.

You also have to know the area where they live itâs not full of teenagers taking pics. ///
I've never spent a lot of time in the East Coast. What are the demographics in Chris' general area? Families, college kids, young professionals, retirees? Can anyone who's more familiar with the area give me an idea?
Anyone? đ§đ»ââïž
Hello, decades long eastern Massachusetts resident here. The TL:DR of the area he lives in and has lived in suburban Boston area is just that, suburban. I'd call them sleepy suburbia in that they are all towns, not cities. No exciting nightlife (it's not NYC for instance).
I won't name which towns are most connected to him just as a matter of principle however they have populations of approximately 18 thousand, and 5 thousand. Mostly houses with families and lots of open spaces." Professionals? sure. Retirees? naturally. It's not farmland or anything just sleepy suburban. Kids trick or treat, teenagers do exist *le gasp* but they generally aren't the crazy stalker batshit ones anyways, oh and people do watch movies and have a full awareness of the world around them however, and listen to me closely on this, there is no paparazzi hanging out at Star Market just waiting on celebrities to come and get their fix of coco puffs! I personally have seen famous people and have just allowed them to go about their day like a normal human which they seem to appreciate.
Like take how my friends who work at different Starbucks' within the 128 belt, (closer to Boston and in Boston for those who don't know), sometimes tell me who's come in and what not but they don't stop them to take pics, they treat them like a human getting a coffee. Once in a blue moon a pic might pop up yes but it's *usually* after a pleasant conversation and having asked permission.
I myself live in a city here so there is more opportunities to spot people but, again, if...idk, I saw John Krasinski pumping gas next to me i'm not going to whip my phone out and take pics of him, in his face, without permission. My natural instinct is to smile, maybe say hi and if the opportunity presented itself, to say i enjoy his work or something to that affect. Boston is a lot more like that with people who live here or are from here. Now if they are presenting, or at a show (that they are involved with), or otherwise "working" yeah fair game take pics. But if they are just trying to get a bagel most people leave them be.
One more note, there's a famous story from when "Captain America: The First Avenger" came out and a girl was at her dentist and they were talking about the movie and the dentist said nonchalantly, "my son is in that movie", it didn't even click for her that he was talking about his son, Christopher Evans, until long after the fact.
Thanks!! đ§đ»ââïž

CATCHING MY BREATH, STARING OUT AN OPEN WINDOW
Elizabeth âLunaâ Vaughn is based on Luna from Scooby-Doo. She is a 29 year old human, Hex Girls keyboardist/bassist & dental assistant, and uses she/her pronouns. She has no powers. Luna is portrayed by Ryan Destiny and she is open.
CATCHING MY DEATH, AND I COULDNâT BE SURE
Like the moon in the night sky that Elizabeth borrowed her nickname from, there was a sense of calm and consistency to the girl. Even from a young age, she was steadfast, quiet to some, but always ready to voice her opinion when the time was right. In her small Massachusetts town, it didnât take long for her to realize that her interests in the occult and activism werenât entirely things that others were so accommodating towards but Luna was thankful for that. It helped her realize who her true friends were. The ones who didnât give her weird looks when she admitted to asking her dentist dad to make her fake vampire teeth or that she liked to go out in the full moon simply to feel the weight of manifestations and every possibility imaginable that hung in the air. Nature was powerful and it was all around them. It had to be protected.
Finding Thorn and Dusk was a sign. Other girls her own age who felt the same way, who wanted to change the world in order to save it. The Hex Girls were going to spread the word and they wonderful thing was, was that they did. Sure, some people thought their witchy vibes and goth looks were âtoo muchâ but how else were they supposed to get attention? Going on tour with her best friends was exactly what Luna thought it would be - a lot of big ideas, passionate arguments about the right way to do things, and Elizabeth having to step in and remind them all that they were doing this for the same reason. Their goals remained the same. Between the three, it was clear she was the one with her feet (mostly) on the ground but that didnât mean her dreams werenât as lofty as the others. Evermore was an unexpected twist in their fate and so far, itâs been a bit of an adjustment. They remember their band but hardly anything else outside of it. Though music is calling to her, at the moment Luna has detoured into her fatherâs footsteps, starting to work at the dentist to be around something thatâs familiar.
I HAD A FEELING SO PECULIAR
â Louis Blanchard: Thereâs no denying how incredibly talented Louis is and Luna would never try to! Sheâs trying to learn more instruments herself and she honestly doesnât think thereâs a better teacher out there. â John Darling: Luna has been called rigid once or twice in her life, when compared to Dusk and Thorn, but she doesnât come anywhere close to John. She wishes there was a way she could help him relax but she had a feeling music might not be enough. â Kida Nedakh: Talk about eyes finding you when you walk into a room. Luna thought she could command attention well but Kida has a few tricks up her sleeve that sheâs been dying to find out.
THAT THIS PAIN WOULD BE FOR EVERMORE

Elizabeth Bishop - In the Waiting Room
In Worcester, Massachusetts, I went with Aunt Consuelo to keep her dentist's appointment and sat and waited for her in the dentist's waiting room. It was winter. It got dark early. The waiting room was full of grown-up people, arctics and overcoats, lamps and magazines. My aunt was inside what seemed like a long time and while I waited I read the National Geographic (I could read) and carefully studied the photographs: the inside of a volcano, black, and full of ashes; then it was spilling over in rivulets of fire. Osa and Martin Johnson dressed in riding breeches, laced boots, and pith helmets. A dead man slung on a pole --"Long Pig," the caption said. Babies with pointed heads wound round and round with string; black, naked women with necks wound round and round with wire like the necks of light bulbs. Their breasts were horrifying. I read it right straight through. I was too shy to stop. And then I looked at the cover: the yellow margins, the date. Suddenly, from inside, came an oh! of pain --Aunt Consuelo's voice-- not very loud or long. I wasn't at all surprised; even then I knew she was a foolish, timid woman. I might have been embarrassed, but wasn't. What took me completely by surprise was that it was me: my voice, in my mouth. Without thinking at all I was my foolish aunt, I--we--were falling, falling, our eyes glued to the cover of the National Geographic, February, 1918.
I said to myself: three days and you'll be seven years old. I was saying it to stop the sensation of falling off the round, turning world. into cold, blue-black space. But I felt: you are an I, you are an Elizabeth, you are one of them. Why should you be one, too? I scarcely dared to look to see what it was I was. I gave a sidelong glance --I couldn't look any higher-- at shadowy gray knees, trousers and skirts and boots and different pairs of hands lying under the lamps. I knew that nothing stranger had ever happened, that nothing stranger could ever happen.
Why should I be my aunt, or me, or anyone? What similarities-- boots, hands, the family voice I felt in my throat, or even the National Geographic and those awful hanging breasts-- held us all together or made us all just one? How--I didn't know any word for it--how "unlikely". . . How had I come to be here, like them, and overhear a cry of pain that could have got loud and worse but hadn't?
The waiting room was bright and too hot. It was sliding beneath a big black wave, another, and another.
