Thoughts
Grief. Denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Life, limb, or humanity itself. Always the same, never the same. Some lingered through, others caught on one spot, some barely bothered.
There was something small, hard, and jagged in Sojurn's mouth. Either a chipped tooth or chitin. They ran their tongue over their teeth.
They hadn't had the chance to grieve. Acceptance wasn't a stage, it was a life the remnants of humanity had to cling to. Sojurn had hoped when the end of the world struck that people wouldn't turn on one another. They liked to think that most people were good, decent individuals.
They were right.
Humanity's sportsmanship didn't matter when the chips were down and death had a full house.
Their tongue touched a sharp section that wasn't there before. Crap, it was a tooth.
Anger, bargaining. They'd been trapped between the two.
The piece of bone was impossible to make out in the light of a crescent moon. Sojurn could barely make out the the shackles circling their own ankles, even when they moved. The arthropods weren't creatures of sterilized plastic and chrome, aliens capable of being wiped out by the smallest germ. It wasn't clear if they were aliens at all.
Process it, find a way out, or linger on the pain.
They were not going to focus on alien examination or broken shoulder. Sojurn shifted, shoulder leaning on the wooden wall of their cage. Their captors were ants, living in mutualistic harmony with the plants they tended. They were beings of wood and leather, occasionally throwing in a stone of metal link if the situation required. The cable behind them clink. Apparently their situation required.
Sojurn tried to make themselves comfortable, a task harder done than said when a plant had its tendrils literally under your skin. Calling it a cage wasn't quite accurate. It was a living pit. The fetters trapping them were living wood instead of iron links.
The first will be painful. The second nigh impossible as they are now. The third would be nothing except pain. The choice was obvious.
All-encompassing fear ripped its claws into their chest.

Rehabilitation After Dental Injuries: Recovery Strategies for Athletes
Tumblr media
Picture this: You're on the field, giving your all in the game, when suddenly an unexpected collision occurs, leaving you with a dental injury. Whether you're a professional athlete or an enthusiastic amateur, dental injuries are a part of the game that no one anticipates. But fear not – recovery is possible, and there are effective strategies to get you back in the game with a winning smile.
The first step in the road to recovery is swift action. Just as a quick pass can change the course of a match, prompt attention to a dental injury is crucial. If a tooth is knocked out, rinse it gently, place it back in the socket if possible, and hold it in place. If this isn't feasible, store it in milk or a tooth preservation solution. Seek dental care immediately; time is of the essence.
Once you're in the capable hands of a dental professional, they'll assess the extent of the injury and recommend a tailored recovery plan. This plan may involve rest, modification of your training routine, and possibly the use of a protective mouthguard to prevent further damage. Embrace these recommendations as you would a well-executed play – they're designed to ensure a smooth recovery.
Nutrition plays a vital role in the rehabilitation game. Just as your body needs the right fuel for optimal performance on the field, it requires the right nutrients for efficient healing. Incorporate a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, especially calcium and vitamin D, to promote bone health. Stay hydrated, as it not only aids overall health but also supports the healing process.
Patience is key in the game of recovery. While the desire to get back on the field may be strong, rushing the rehabilitation process can lead to setbacks. Follow your dentist's instructions diligently, attend follow-up appointments, and gradually reintroduce physical activity. This approach ensures that you're not only back in action but also at your peak performance level.
In the unpredictable world of sports, dental injuries are an unfortunate reality. However, with timely intervention, a well-crafted recovery plan, and a dash of patience, athletes can make a triumphant return to the game. So, whether you're dribbling on the basketball court or scoring goals on the soccer field, remember – dental setbacks may be a temporary hurdle, but your comeback can be legendary.

ONE INSTANT COMMISSION SPOT OPEN
SOLD
But I might open more of these in the future if I get more crispy dental bills
I'm opening one slot for a smaller commission to do immediately between my other work. Where I live the public healthcare is jammed and since it took a week for me to get into any kind of contact with them and I would've had to wait til next year for a dentist appointment, I went to a private dentist. It was very fast but also pricey.
I'm hoping to fix the dent in my wallet a little, so, now is your chance to get past the queue if you have a smaller commission in mind!
AVAILABLE:
Simple composition (similar to my swordtember style) 80€
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Waist up line art portrait without background 80€
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Two sketches 80€ (40€ per sketch)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(latter can be split into two slots if there's interest)
If interested, send me an email at artharakka(at)gmail.com 🧡

when i was a dental assistant our post-extraction instructions were basically as listed here, with the addition of avoiding spicy foods and carbonated drinks during healing
Do You Know What Dry Socket Is?
Informational post about something a lot of people might be unaware of.
So, let’s say you loose a tooth. You fell and knock it out, maybe you pulled it at home for whatever reason. All that is important in this scenario is that you’ve lost a tooth outside of a dentist visit, so there is no field professional there to walk you through the healing process.
Now, how do you recover from this? Saltwater rinse, wad of cotton to help slow the bleeding, painkillers, eating soft foods. It stands to reason that, like any other recovery period that involves the mouth and teeth, you’d also need a straw. Makes sense, easier to get liquid into your mouth and you’ll have more control over where in your mouth it goes. Makes sense, right?
You are about to give yourself dry socket.
The main difference between most other well known recovery periods from a jaw / mouth injury, is that the act of sucking on a straw can dislodge the blood clot from your gums.
The reason is, for a few days, your blood clot is actually smaller than the hole left behind by the missing tooth. Gums do heal quicker than most other tissue on your body , so the opening will close to be smaller than the blood clot itself. But there is a period of time, the first few days of healing, that the blood clot is at a serious risk of coming loose or being dissolved away . This risk does not truly go away until healing is over , but the likelyhood slowly goes down.
This blood clot being removed will reveal the traumatized and damaged nerve + the jaw bone to the open . Unsurprisingly, this is extraordinary pain, that nothing can soothe. Any fluid gets into the wound ? Food particles ? You inhale / exhale too hard ? That nerve is going to Ache. Not to mention , you’ re at an even higher infection risk now .
And the things that can cause dry socket are so innocuous , that unless you know about the possibility , you may do these actions without thinking.
1) Straws ( and Sucking )
The pressure from drinking through a straw is enough to pull the blood clot from your gums . This pressure can be caused by anything that requires sucking , this includes smoking as well . Anything that requires a strong pull into your mouth to eat / ingest is exerting the same pull on your loose blood clot . If you suck on a straw now , you can feel the kind of pressure vacuum you make in your mouth . That pressure does not care about what it might cause to dislodge .
2) Spitting Out Blood
At least , for the first 24 hours . After 24 hours ( specifically , after your gums stop consistently bleeding ) and you start doing saltwater rinses , you’ re free to spit . But regardless , forceful spitting can do the exact same damage as drinking from a straw . It’ s the pressure and force you cause . When you do saltwater rinses , don’ t really swish. Tilt your head side to side and slowly push the water around . For the first 24 hours , you are encouraged to swallow blood instead of spitting , to avoid the risk of spitting out the start of a blood clot and prolonging the bleeding cycle . Keep in mind the nausea this can cause .
3) Alcohol and Hot Food/Liquid
Paring these together since they cause similar issues . Alcohol can melt a blood clot , and abundance of heat can increase blood flow too the clot . Both of these will cause the clot to dissolve or come loose , but cold food/drink is more recommended . Yes , cold can cause an ache if it manages to come into direct contact with the healing area , but it will not affect the blood clot as seriously as hot food/drink will . Room temperature is also okay for consumption.
4) Exercise
Light exercise is okay , but anything that ups your heart-rate is upping blood flow to your wound . Nothing strenuous, nothing that pushes endurance , nothing that you know will exhaust you . Even if you heart-rate jumps from something like chasing a cat down because they have something they shouldn’ t have can cause increased blood flow ( trust me , it felt like I was undergoing divine punishment because I stopped my cat from eating a tuff of dog hair . ) The sudden taste of blood is a warning to slow down what you’re doing .
While dry socket can heal on it’s own, the gums will cover the exposed bone regardless of if there’s a clot there or not, this pain is not something anyone deserves to struggle with . Once again , dealing with dry socket is dealing exposed bone and nerve .
Dentists are expensive , and if you cannot afford a dental visit after the loss of a tooth, I only want you to be aware of one of the more serious complications that come with such a thing happening . Everyone deserves to heal in comfort , and I only want people to have the best chance at having a complication free healing process .

Learned just now that chewing ice constantly can be a sign of iron deficiency...
Sooo, I'm just gonna file that away in the Gymrat!Remus HCs pile... <_<
(Guy is ND as hell, but also extremely prone to iron deficiency thanks to the PCOS issues. Think it's kinda funny imagining him going "huh", when he gets his out of whack iron levels in order and doesn't feel like shoving ice in his face as bad anymore.)

I love that I’ve gone from “it’s a new year things are gonna be okay” to “right well maybe I can go five minutes without needing to book an urgent GP appointment again” in less time than it takes to get through a medical waiting list here.

lord help me i'm about to become the patient every doctor hates and argue with my psychiatrist based on google
#listen the woman is very nice i'm glad she picked up on my polite hinting around my anxiety/possible pmdd and prescribed zoloft#but also she's so overly cautious that it's driving me fucking crazy#she made me get vitamin testing and an ecg. okay sure no harm in that#she wrote me a prescription for high-dose vitamin d supplements. fine it's actually cheaper than otc stuff#but now she's making me go to a fucking cardiologist because i have respiratory sinus arrhythmia??#respiratory sinus arrhythmia is fucking good for you!! it means your heart is healthy and has good parasympathetic output!!#(admittedly my ecg just says 'sinus arrhythmia' and 'normal variant' so theoretically it COULD be a different type of sinus arrhythmia)#(but like. it's fucking not. i don't have heart disease and i've never had a head injury or taken digoxin#and also i can literally feel my heart rate change when i inhale and exhale and i've been aware of it for years)#and also!!! i cannot find a single goddamn paper that even suggests methylphenidate is unsafe in people with sinus arrhythmia!!!#also as dental students we send a lot of consult requests to cardiologists so i KNOW how much cardiologists hate doing unnecessary consults#like they are NOT nice about it they get extremely bitchy and passive-aggressive#anyway. i did make a cardiologist appointment so if she can provide me with an actual good reason for concern i'll keep it#but if not then i'm cancelling that sucker. sorry i'm not wasting my time and money just so a cardiologist can tell me#that i'm allowed to keep taking the medication that i've been taking for 7 goddamn years with no issues#personal post shut up

alright official announcement because i will not be critiquing my boys whatsoever, i save that shit for during the season :) i WILL however go ballistic at lou at some point in the coming days. i’m so proud they crawled their way into the fight.
will be bandwagoning panthers (solely for the rat. i’m not proud of it but what can i say) & wild (also solely for boldy. the kid has a face that’s very easy to root for, okay.) if they can make it out of the first round.
no matter what, canes have made my shit list 🙃 was kinda indifferent before cause we only see them so many times a year and their style is so… bland? idk. but playoff version of bland is just whiny apparently so. fully hoping they get upended by a young, equally annoyingly whiny devs team or eventually just crushed by another hard hitting team like the bruins/panthers since they didn’t like getting physical at allllll (or sneaky leafs??) (literally anyone but tampa because then i will turn off hockey and say screw it until september preseason). maybe they get off the shit list next year maybe not but i’m going to be bitter and petty about it for a few months.
til next year, isles lb… or maybe just until the annual frankie borelli foreplay pod/isles golf youtube extravaganza ep drops this offseason because you already know i will be losing my mind over it
