fuck i don't wanna post about politics but its scaring the absolute shit out of me the story of the guy from Maryland with no criminal record who was accidentally sent to an El Salvador mega-prison where inmates are beaten, tortured, and dont have proper hygiene or medical care
like this guy had NO TRIAL OR ANYTHING they just fucking kidnapped him off the street and sent him to a foreign torture prison
El salvador has tens of thousands of people in prison and the leader brags about how horrible conditions are in there. Hundreds of people have died in El Salvador prisons according to the second link up there.
And what's more, the guy originally ran away from Venezuela because there were gangs trying to kill him.
And it sounds like there's other people been sent there too and the republicans are defending sending people to foreign torture prison WITHOUT TRIAL??? And Kristi "puppy-shooter" Noem visited the megaprison to film and show off the inmates' dehumanization and misery

i'm not particularly interested in crowing about usamericans being worried about their livelihoods right now but i do hope that every yanqui currently freaking out realizes that what they are experiencing now as freak abberation is like a fraction of the economic instability experienced regularly by people in e.g. latin america

I think people mean well when they insist that America isn't a Christian country but it just obfuscates the situation and makes it more difficult for minorities to frame their experiences. America is a fundamentally, structurally, ideologically Christian country from top to bottom. It's exhausting, it's suffocating, and it's the truth. Nearly all political forces, pop culture phenomena, and major life philosophies here are either built on Christianity or propped up as subverting Christianity in a way that is, of course, still entirely about Christianity. Leftwing movements here that are ostensibly hostile to Christianity still ultimately structure their worldviews around their own versions of salvation, rapture, original sin, eternal judgement, heaven, and hell. Most people here fail to see Christianity all around them, influencing every facet of American life, for the same reason that a fish can't see water.

seeing gringos realize that imported products are more expensive is kinda baffling to me like what do you mean this is not the reality everyone was already living on?

when i graduated my first intention for job searching was actually the FDA or certain parts of the USDA bc my dad was real gung-ho abt ooh you should get a government job, and we did live in a fantastic area for it, and i'm the skeptic that i am but food safety is one of the government functions that i have strong and uncomplicated positive moral feelings about.
post office was a fallback after a few months seeing no postings i was qualified for + despairing over the nature of resumes lol. bc an equitable and private post was another thing i could commit to helping function without compunctions

it is weird that celiac stuff has become part of the 'culture war'. because it's literally just a medical thing.... I get super anemic unless I cut a certain protein out of my diet, because it bulldozes the villi in my intestines. but if I post about it, right-wingers send me gore images. I guess you can't expect shitty people to be logical, but I've even heard lefty people make fun of gluten stuff, and it's like why are you mad about this??? why are you pissed off that I'm eating bread that doesn't taste as good so that I can have blood in my body? it's so morally neutral.

I'd like to draw attention to a couple of stories where immigrants were detained by ICE--a mother and her 3 children in New York and a couple who owned a kebab shop in New Jersey--but in both cases, they were released after outrage from their respective communities. The superintendent of the children's school was "leading efforts to ensure the family's release" in the NY case, and Haddon Township residents donated over $300,000 to the NJ couple's GoFundMe for their legal fees.
This is why it matters for communities to support its members and speak out against injustice. This administration will not do everything it wants as long as people keep fighting back.

really strange how you can be almost at peace with something that happened to you but it will continue to be a defining moment of your life for the rest of your life. you wont think about it much anymore but in a conversation about a film someone will mention the year it was released and you’ll think to yourself, “that was before it happened” and you’ll see an old photo and think how strange it is to have existed before it happened and somehow it’s like living a life in two acts
