How does drawing extend beyond actual marks made on a surface? Find out in my post "Lineage Drawing," where I describe the impact of a 1970s collaboration between conceptual artist Dennis Oppenheim and his children. Dennis Oppenheim
Tumblr media
Dennis Oppenheim was an American conceptual artist his main focus in Oppenheim's career was to have work on site and the context behind the work, with all that Oppenheim also wanting to want the artwork to be memorable and aesthetic for the viewer. I found this artist from reading a book about walking and his work stood out to me due to the unique style of materials and form.

Dennis Oppenheim at Storm King. Courtesy of Dennis Oppenheim Estate. Oppenheim went for a futuristic approach with this artwork, it reminds me of a tent and at the same time keeps me very calm due to the cool colours of the grass as well as the structure being blue however upon researching about this artwork it came with controversy which many famous artworks do as it gets the biggest reaction, the structure is of a blue shirt resemble what people made in the factory's and almost creating this artworks to help move on form that period and almost to show how far they have calm and making something negative to positive.

From looking more in depth to Oppenheim's work I could see that his interests were within making greenhouses but in futuristic twists without taking it away from the fact that you could still tell it was a greenhouse, kind of like making very large-scale vessels that you can fit people into, and people can walk and explore what he has built. I would say that Oppenheim accomplished his goal in that he did successful making sculpture on large scale with great context behind it all while making it aesthetic for the viewer.

'Jurassic Park, directed by Steven Spielberg and based on Michael Crichton’s novel of the same name, is a film that has captivated audiences for decades. Its thrilling storyline, groundbreaking special effects, and memorable characters have made it a cinematic classic.
However, amidst the larger-than-life dinosaurs and the gripping human drama, there are subtle details that might go unnoticed on a casual viewing.
One such detail is the picture of J. Robert Oppenheimer taped to the computer of Dennis Nedry, the film’s primary human antagonist.
Who Was J. Robert Oppenheimer? J. Robert Oppenheimer, often referred to as the “father of the atomic bomb,” was a theoretical physicist and the scientific director of the Manhattan Project during World War II.
This project led to the creation of the first atomic bombs, which were later dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Following the bombings, Oppenheimer became a vocal critic of nuclear proliferation and advocated for international control of atomic energy.
Why is Oppenheimer’s Picture on Nedry’s Computer?
At first glance, it might seem odd for a character like Dennis Nedry, a computer programmer and saboteur, to have a picture of a historical figure like Oppenheimer on his workstation. However, when delving deeper, the connection becomes clearer:
Playing God Both Oppenheimer and the scientists at Jurassic Park were involved in groundbreaking scientific endeavors that tampered with the natural order.
While Oppenheimer’s work led to the creation of a weapon of mass destruction, the scientists at Jurassic Park brought extinct creatures back to life.
Both acts can be seen as “playing God,” with unforeseen and catastrophic consequences.
Moral Dilemmas Just as Oppenheimer faced moral dilemmas after witnessing the destructive power of the atomic bomb, the characters in Jurassic Park grapple with the ethical implications of their actions.
Nedry’s sabotage, driven by greed, mirrors the dangerous consequences of unchecked ambition.
The Weight of Responsibility The picture could symbolize the weight of responsibility that comes with great power.
Oppenheimer’s famous quote, “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds,” taken from the Hindu scripture Bhagavad Gita, reflects his realization of the consequences of his actions.
Similarly, the chaos that ensues in Jurassic Park serves as a stark reminder of the repercussions of meddling with nature.
The inclusion of Oppenheimer’s picture on Dennis Nedry’s computer is a subtle yet poignant detail in Jurassic Park.
It serves as a reminder of the profound consequences that can arise from scientific advancements when they are pursued without considering the ethical and moral ramifications.
Spielberg’s decision to include this detail adds another layer of depth to a film already rich in themes and symbolism, reminding viewers that with great power comes great responsibility.'

7/21/23
It's Oppie-Barbz Day! I could barely work due to my pent up excitement for Oppenheimer as I counted down the minutes until 4:00. I was so excited, I got worried my car was going to break down. My car did NOT break down and I met up with my scheduled date (RKS). A little bit to our surprise, we had actually signed up for a double date with the cuties next door :) Josh/Torin had already seen Barbie at 10 with nothing but glowing reviews for the hyperextended Ryan Gosling fan cam, but now it was game time. Reagan and I got dressed up for the occasion, but J and T couldn't commit to the bit.
MOVIE REVIEW TIME Oppenheimer: Good
Even though me and R were blown away with the Nolan flic, Torin defiantly stated that the Barbie movie was superior (despite sleeping through the first 30 mins of Oppenheimer). It gave us even more excitement for the Margot Robbie foot film.
To pre-game, R and I had dinner at the Taproom - not before a little walk around the armory talking about Nolan movies. At dinner I was scammed on a grilled cheese, R got her classic mushroom burger, and the fries were excessively – no, ridiculously – salty **YUCK**. Afterwards, we went for Ice cream (Kilwins vanilla for me, cake batter for R) and watched local band New American Cuisine play some songs in front of Ben and Jerry's (those no good lying hippies - we get into that further w/ Chuck).
BARB TIME BARB TIME BARB TIME! The crowd was wild, the girls were slaying, and watching the movie was so fun because of the people – vox populi.
MOVIE REVIEW TIME Barbie: Good, but not Oppie good (Sorry T).
With the double feature wrapped up, and the clock past midnight, I was ready for bed. But not before some final Barbie tunes in the car with R :)
I almost crashed my car on the ride home because I nearly missed a turn because I was sooooo sleepy.
