×÷繰り返して心丈夫になる (kakeru waru kurikaeshite kokorojoubu ni naru) is a really, really cute pun. the verb used for multiplication in mathematics is 掛ける– it has several meanings, one of which meaning "to secure" (i.e. locking a padlock, etc). That part combined with 心丈夫 (referring to emotional security or reassurance) can give off the vibe of "securing one's emotional security". this one makes me smile a lot :)

not sure exactly what this line is supposed to mean (what were they cooking?), but the galapagos speed dramatic part of the chorus did lead me to an interesting fact while i was trying to crack it! there's a phrase called the galapagos syndrome, which is a term in the business sector that was coined in japan– one of the early uses of this term is to refer to tech with highly specific features, which was unsuccessful outside of japan. more about that here, it's very interesting and def links back to yusei's role as the akiba rep.

＋−の天秤に人生のスパイスを (purasu mainasu no tenbin ni jinsei no supaisu wo). translated as "the positive-negative balance is what spices up our lives". two things here: jinsei is the typical reading of the unit name hitoiki (which, funnily enough, derives the kanji from the names of its two members!), and spice is a nod to the fact the two of them go out to eat curry. i'm not sure if it's mentioned what their preferred spice level(s) are though.

bungaku complex

月が綺麗ですねってこぼしたそれは (tsuki ga kirei desu ne tte koboshita sore wa). this line contains a literary history reference. natsume soseki (author of texts such as botchan/wagahai wa neko de aru) coined the phrase "tsuki ga kirei desu ne" as an indirect translation of "i love you", and it is still commonly used as a method of confession for characters in anime/manga.

電気街 (denki-gai) literally: "electric town". Often tacked onto the end of akiba as a nickname given the prevalence of tech stores in the area. kinda self explanatory.

過去と未来を通りゃんせっせと (kako to mirai wo tooryanse sse to)– tooryanse is the name of a nursery rhyme from the edo period. the melody from this rhyme is often used in crossing signals in japan, with the rhyme itself essentially being about a family trying to celebrate shichi-go-san (rite of passage ceremony for young kids, more detail here).

冥土の土産はメイドが見上げた (meido no miyage wa meido ga miage ta). this one is difficult as hell to translate in a way that conveys the genius wordplay in it, and that very much gives me a migraine because it's so good. 冥土の土産 is an expression which refers to something which the speaker feels can make them pass away in peace– 冥土 in particular referring to hades and his domain in greek mythology. メイドが見上げ literally just refers to looking up at a maid (as the line is sung by yusei, this tracks given akiba's abundance of maid cafes). unironically peak

ほらもう一丁 (hora mou icchou). icchou can refer to a serving of food in a restaurant, which means it's probably a reference to how yusei and rihito are lunch bros who go out to eat together on a frequent basis. icchou, when given the -me suffix, can refer to a city block. this is probably unrelated, but it may even be a subtle nod to the close proximity of kanda and akiba stations– being located less than 10 minutes away from each other in nichome kajicho and icchome sotokanda respectively.

[Info] Tsukino Production Stage Play News - February 2020

With the last performance of Tsukista’s 10th Stage Taikyoku Denki came a lot of new announcements! Here’s the info the official Twitter accounts (@tsukista) and (@tsukino_pro) have released so far:

The next Tsukista play (11th stage) will be Tsukihana Kagura 「Black and White Stories」which will have two versions - Black (for Six Gravity) and White (for Procellarum. It will be running Nippon Seinenkan Hall in Shinjuku,Tokyo from July 15-20, 2020. Note the cast has not been revealed yet.

Psychic Force auction haul part 4. The last of the stuff I ordered! Thank god.  Here’s this week’s list, in picture order: 1-3: Psychic Force OVA clearfiles- These are bigger than the other clearfile I bought separately. It’s not a surprise as to which one is my favourite lol 4: RED HOT ROCKS doujin by Akiba Denki & MACHINE GUN HELL fan anthology- from the description that I could read w/my (poor) Japanese, I thought that the both of these were Burn/Keith doujin, boy was I wrong. RED HOT ROCKS seems to be a collection of Akiba Denki’s psyforce comics they did (I recognise a few from one or two official anthologies I own) while MACHINE GUN HELL is a fanmade anthology, mostly gag ft. Akiba Denki. Overal, both are in nice condition & I like the artwork. That’s it!! I’m poor.

Akihabara Travel Guide 秋葉原

Once known as Electric Town, Akihabara is now a magnet for video games, anime, and manga hobbyists and many themed cafes.

We often get asked by friends and readers on Japan travel tips and itineraries so we try our best to share our Japan experiences on the blog.  However, one city we didn’t have much travel content on was Tokyo.  Why?  Since Nami’s family only lives 7 miles (15 km) from Tokyo and 15 miles (23 km) to Shibuya, it never seemed like a “Japan travel destination” for us.

As we get repeated request for Tokyo travel guide, we spent 6 days this past summer in Tokyo exploring different wards, activities to do, places to visit and eat.  This is just the beginning of our Tokyo travel guide and we’ll continue adding to these posts as we explore new adventure and experiences.  We hope you will enjoy traveling throughout Tokyo with our family.

The reality is that it’s impossible to finish exploring Tokyo in 6 days, or even possibly a month.  There are simply way too many options for dining, sightseeing, and entertainment!  This is our first effort to share Tokyo with you and we hope you’ll enjoy our journey.  There is something for everyone in Tokyo so pick and choose what your heart desires when you visit.

Akihabara Travel Guide

When we visited Akihabara, we had only planned to spend a short time there.  Somehow between the hobby stores and the video game arcades, the hours went by quickly and we ended up spending half a day.  Come join us as we explore the unique hobby stores, Don Quijote megastore, and Gachapon Hall in Akihabara.

Around Akihabara Station

When you first exit Akihabara station, it could be difficult to orient yourself.  No worries, here’s a tip to find your way quickly,  The main strip for Akihabara is on Chuo Dori (中央通り) to the west of the station.  The east side of the station has the giant Yodobashi Camera store.  If you see the Yodobashi Camera store, head in the other direction to get to Chuo Dori.

In case you’re looking for any type of consumer electronics including camera equipment, games, computers, or kitchen gadgets, Yodobashi Camera is a good bet as it’s one of the largest electronics chains in Japan.

As you walk to the west side of the station, the unmistakable neon lights, see through escalators, and anime billboards of Akihabara greet you.

Yamada Denki LABI Akihabara (computer store)

In this area directly west of the station, the streets are lined with various electronics and hobby stores.

As we peek inside many of the hobby stores, they are filled with clear cases featuring various comic and anime characters.  I’ll be honest, as someone who grew up in Asia and has read an obscenely large number of comic books, there’s something magical and nostalgic about all these anime characters.  It was difficult for me to suppress the urge to take some home.

There are small and large hobby stores, and the large stores like Volks Hobby Paradise had thousands of characters on display and each one was meticulously crafted with exact details.

One Piece figurines.

There were characters from many anime but the most popular one by far is One Piece.  Quite a large percentage of the display cases featured One Piece characters.  The characters ranged from the lower range of 2,000 yen all the way up to 30,000 yen+.

As a fan of Dragon Ball, it was difficult to resist not bringing the balls home.

Besides the hobby shops and various retail stores on the main strip, there are older malls lined with small stalls each specializing in a specific type of electronics or hobby goods.

Akihabara Video Arcades

There are many differences for life in a big city between the US and Japan.  One of the big differences is the number of video arcades available.  In Japan, there are large video arcades on the top floors of malls featuring the latest video games, casino machines, and UFO catchers.  Akihabara takes this to a whole new level with entire building dedicated to arcades games including a few operated by SEGA.

To rewards our children for being such good sports and going everywhere with us, we made a quick pit stop at one of the SEGA video arcade.

Inside of most arcades, there are also many UFO catcher machines which offer a range of prizes from oversized snacks to stuff animals.

Akihabara Gachapon Hall (Capsule Vending Machines)

If you have been to Japan, you’ve probably seen Gachapon/Gashapon or the capsule vending machines. In case you’re not familiar, Gachapon is a vending machine where you put coins and twist the handlebar, and one of the random objects for the machine’s theme will come out.  They used to be present in US supermarkets and pharmacy stores but you don’t see them as often anymore.

What’s so cool about Akihabara Gachapon Hall?  It has 400+ Gachapon machines in 1 place!

At Gachapon Hall, their vending machine gives random objects a whole new meaning.   Among the more exotic gifts you can get, they include glow sticks, BBQ beef intestine phone straps, and miniature microscope just to name a few.

Akihabara Don Quijote

Speaking of stores and random goods, no experience to Japan is complete with visiting a Don Quijote megastore.  The one in Akihabara is 8 floors with 2 game floors, a maid cafe, and the AKB48 theater at the top.

So what is Don Quijote?  It’s like a general + electronics + shoe + bags + most random things discount store ever.  Here are just some of things they carry below.

Beer supersonic foamer and onsen tamago maker.

Besides clothing, toys, and random home goods, they also carry coin banks with characters that pop out and grab the coins with their arms, fireworks, and shampoo.  What’s fun and a bit frustrating at the same time is that the products aren’t really organized by categories so it’s a complete treasure hunt as you go inside to find what you’re looking for.  Our family had a blast this summer visiting many Don Quijote stores.

Menya Haruka 麺屋はるか

After browsing all morning, we got hungry so we stopped for delicious Taiwan Maze Soba (台湾まぜそば)  at Menya Haruka.  We previously tried Taiwan style Maze Soba in Nagoya where it was first invented but it wasn’t that good.  Since Menya Haruka is highly rated so we gave it another shot.

The store is quite small and only fits about 20 patrons.

Soon after we sat down, the noodles were served to us.  To eat the maze soba, you maze-ru (which means “mix” in Japanese) the noodles and toppings together to enjoy the noodle dish.  It turned out to be a great choice; the noodles were fantastic and the sauce was super tasty.  Just keep in mind it’s very filling and heavy, and the garlic flavor is really strong.

Lastly, we didn’t get a chance to do so but you can check out the several themed cafes in the area.

Akihabara is known for its themed cafes including Gundam Cafe, AKB48 Cafe, maid cafes, and animal cafes with cats and owls.

The Budget Traveler's Guide to Akihabara Shopping

So you've made it to Japan and are speeding to Akihabara via train, raring to get your hands on some otaku goods. Unfortunately, you've pretty much blown your money already on the plane ticket and hotel. Uguu~ doushiyou~?

Don't fret! If you have the knowhow to make the most of your yen, you'll be more than capable of acquiring a formidable haul for yourself, and be a courteous customer all the while. Here's a guide with some tips to make you a battle-ready smart shopper before you head to the fated Denki-gai / Electric Town station exit.

Note: Japanese phrases will be Romanized if they're primarily encountered in speech, and written out in kanji / kana if it's helpful to know how to read them.

Etiquette and Common Sense

First and foremost, you need to know the rules of engagement so as not to step on any toes (literally or figuratively) during your time in Akihabara.

"Remember your please and thank you." At a minimum, add these handy phrases to your Japanese vocabulary: onegaishimasu ("please," use as you bring your purchases to the counter); arigatou gozaimasu ("thank you," use anywhere it makes sense); shitsureishimasu ("excuse me," use to get someone's attention if you're moving past them, etc); sumimasen ("sorry," use if you accidentally bump into someone, knock something over, etc).

Whether driving or walking in Japan, stick to the left side. This is particularly important in the cramped stairs and walkways in Akiba's numerous shops, and helps everyone navigate around quickly and smoothly.

Be aware of your surroundings. Make room for people to move past, especially in tight areas (in return, most Akihabara-goers will make room for you even if they just hear your footsteps). Watch your back, especially if you're wearing a backpack, so you don't knock over sometimes precariously stacked items.

Be conscientious about photo and video. Lots of spots will have signs forbidding camera use, so keep an eye out for when it is or isn't okay. Also, people in Japan are sometimes less comfortable with being in a stranger's pictures and video than Western cultures are used to, so snap politely.

Refrain from phone calls and loud conversations while indoors; even if you're not called out for it, it can really annoy people.

Put items that you take out of their shelves back into the same spot, as best you can. Store inventory is usually sorted within shelves, not just by obvious details like author or price, but oftentimes by other factors such as genre, subject matter, and event of release (e.g. Comiket, M3)

There are these neat little trays at many shop registers that you put your payment (cash or card) into. It's polite to use the tray, and can make it easier to deal with small change to boot!

Save the unboxing for later! It might be tempting to open up the limited edition Magical Salaryman Daigorou BD with oppai mousepad that you just dropped mad yenzz for right outside the store, but hold off until you're back at the hotel.

Bargain-Hunting General Tips

Thanks for listening to my nagging. Now onto the fun stuff!

Bring cash! Not all stores will support your credit card, and those that do might incur a foreign transaction fee (look at the terms of your card to make sure). Cash is also a good way to place a hard cap on spending and keep you to your budget!

Pay very close attention to store signage! Large-scale discount and sales events will be announced with banners and bright colors, but not all deal will be announced with that level of fanfare. Keep an eye out for bundle discounts, price drops, and special items (特典, "tokuten," items that you claim at the register in addition to the item you purchase). Almost every store will have some kind of promotion active at any one time.

On a similar note, many stores have sections dedicated to lower-priced items, usually due to excess stock, older age, or being pre-owned. And it's not like these are bottom-of-the barrel goods either; these items are more often than not high quality stuff that gets moved out of the way for a near-constant stream of new arrivals. I've seen new, unopened games only 6 months old get discounted down 50%, and full volumes of manga just a couple years old dropped down from 600円 to a stunning 100円 a book. For the budget-conscious buyer, the low-price sections of Akihabara's stores is where the magic happens!

I mentioned before that store inventories are usually sorted in some way or another. If you're looking to buy something particular, it's a huge time-saver to scan through the shelves and find out the logic behind the organization, which is sometimes not explicitly labeled. For example, Toranoana's music CD section has signs letting you know it's organized by circle name. Some of the store's doujinshi shelves are organized the same exact way, but might not tell you.

Store layouts will often accommodate the most recent media market event, such as Comitia for manga, M3 for music, and Comiket for pretty much everything. These nicely-made displays are the place to go if you're looking to splurge on a long-awaited release by your favorite artists! Otherwise, you'll find most savings and discounts beyond these shelves.

A little Japanese language goes a long way. Here are some words to look out for, especially in store signage:

¥ / 円. Yen, pronounced "en." Prices are formatted like ¥1000 or 1000円.

万 Stands for 10,000. 3万円 equals 30,000 yen. Not used often.

Item counters. 本 for thick books, 冊 for thin ones (like magazines or doujinshi), 枚 for flat items such as DVDs, CDs, and games. Very helpful for deciphering common discounts such as "5枚 －＞ 20%ＯＦＦ！"

中古, or more simply 古, indicates used items, most likely at a deep discount! Notes such as damage and used-up redemption codes will be written on the label, and you can bring it to the counter if you have questions.

一般 "general," as in "for general audiences." 成年 "adult," as in "for adults only." If buying items marked with the latter, you could be asked to confirm your age ("nenrei") is over 18, in which case any license with your date of birth will do.

ポイントカード "pointo kaado" for "point card." A store-specific card that acts sort of like a store membership. You can apply for one if you foresee making frequent purchases at a location, given you can overcome the language gap. However, point cards aren't mandatory for purchases and you'll also be fine without one; if you're asked at the register whether you have one, a simple "iie" or head-shake will do the job.

Geography and Store Selection

The majority of the Denki-gai is centered around two strips of buildings around a single, central street. It's right next to the JR station and hard to get lost!

Prices can vary greatly across stores! If you find something you like at a price you don't, hold off on the purchase and check out other stores. That same item might just pop up again at a better price! However, certain items are priced according to their suggested retail price no matter where they're sold: this is very common for new releases of manga, books, and games.

Be careful in stores that overtly advertise themselves as being tourist-friendly or multilingual. Many are totally harmless, honest businesses, but certain shops will mark up their prices to a premium, at worst being unreasonably expensive. The most unscrupulous variety will sell fake, lower quality products (this is especially dangerous for electronics!). Saddening that I have to warn you about this, but it is what it is.

You might have noticed that some stores have multiple Akihabara locations, sometimes just a couple hundred feet from each other (Toranoana, Sofmap, and Trader are just a few examples). The inventories and product categories featured will be very different, with the only major overlap being the most popular items. It's worth exploring each one!

Some stores will span a whole 6+ floors with specialized categories for each level, while others are tiny single-floor affairs that can be easy to miss. For example, there's an itty-bitty Melonbooks located underground down an unassuming flight of stairs, and a doujinshi-focused Toranoana on the third floor above a completely different shop! If you're having a hard time finding out where a particular store is located, there's usually some signage outside that will point you in the right direction.

If you have time, wander off the main street! Otherwise, you might miss gems like the utterly massive Bookoff (where I found shelf after shelf of 100円 manga).

Details, Quirks, and Miscellanea

Most stores in the Electric Town will open at 10 or 11 AM. Closing times vary, but you can expect 90% of stores to be open until 8 PM, with 10-11 PM being a very standard closing time.

Make sure to purchase your items on the same floor you find them stocked! If there is no register that floor, go to the register on the closest floor to you.

Don't worry about bringing bags to carry your purchases, stores will bag your items at the register, and will give you a large bag to carry multiple smaller ones, even if they're from other stores!

Yes, it's normal for some shops to tape your bags closed or use two bags to obscure the contents; it's for privacy's sake. No, you won't look like a criminal on the train back.

Paper-bound items will usually have a sample copy at the very top/front of the stack, which you can use to preview the work. Make sure to buy a normal copy!

Trading-card shops will sometimes have placeholder items in their shelves. Take the desired number of each to the front counter and you can exchange them for the real deal.

Another trading-card tip: sometimes the cashier will ask you if you have a proper deck ("dekki") for the TCG in question. They're just making sure you're not mistakenly buying a booster pack as opposed to a starter!

Similarly, when buying older games, particularly for PC, the cashier might ask to ensure your home system has the right specs ("spekku") to play it.

Shop staff will often greet customers with "irasshaimase" (welcome), if you're wondering what they're saying every time someone walks in.

Prepare your legs for a lot of walking and stair-climbing. Like, a LOT. Before my second trip to Akihabara I did leg workouts in preparation, I kid you not.

Tsukista 10th Stage: Taikyoku Denki Cast Visuals & Synopsis

The tenth Tsukista stage play is titled, ‘Taikyoku Denki.’ I explained what the Chinese title and theme are in my other post here! The play features both Six Gravity and Procellarum, but the dance live portion will be different depending on the performance. Synopsis (translated from the Tsukista website): 

In a certain place where shadow (night) and light (day) are imbalanced, shadow rules over the world. Those of the light, the human tribe, are outcasts. The light of day shines but only for a short while, and the rest of the time the humans shoulder together, conceal their breath, and try to live on. Thus, the human tribe is known as “the weakest tribe.”

On the other hand, controlling the long nights are ferocious demons who live as they please and whose justice is final. Among them are humanoid demons - considered prisoners - who possess the power to control darkness, acquired various techniques, and gained certain knowledge. They are distinct from other demons. Thus, the prisoners are known as “the strongest tribe.”

This is where the “strongest” and “weakest” begin to clash with each other, and is a story of the battle for the existence of the world!

FEATURE: Anime vs. Real Life – “Akiba’s Trip The Animation” [Part 2]

The winter season is slowly coming to a close, and the new spring anime are just around the corner. This holds true for Akiba’s Trip The Animation as well, which is going into its grand final showdown next Wednesday. After a short hiatus, and some time of self-reflection, Electric Mayonnaise is back together to finally take on Mayo and Urame’s evil grandmother, Metrotica, and lift the government ban to get rid of everything otaku-related from Akihabara. These past few episodes have been a blast now that Akiba’s Trip is finally following a bigger plotline, while still maintaining its signature ridiculous, over-the-top, and self-deprecating humor. Another one of the show’s strong points has been its surprisingly accurate rendition of the colorful and vibrant Akihabara district, the center of otaku culture. So let’s get another look at the real-world locations of Akiba’s Trip. This article will include images from episodes five through twelve, so please check out my older article about the first four episodes here.

    The Adores arcade is one of many along Akihabara's main street, Chuo Dori. The first and second floors mainly contain prize games, while the third floor up to the tenth floor are used for karaoke.

    The Horin Park in Akihabara. It’s here where Tamotsu goes through rigorous physical training for his upcoming Street Fighter V tournament in episode five. 

    As you can see there’s no actual MofMap building in Akihabara, which is supposed to be a parody of the large electronic retailer, Sofmap. The store to the left is actually the Sofmap Reuse General Store, one of multiple Sofmaps in Akihabara. 

    In episode six, Tamotsu decides to build a PC himself after his old one breaks down, so he heads to the Marutsu Electronics Store in one of Akihabara’s side streets. 

    Mayo and Tamotsu are on their daily patrol around Akihabara. The shop to the left is the Tokka Bazaar electronics store, and to the right is the Coffee Salon Place. 

    MiS sells new and used DVDs, mainly about adult content. 

    March Rabbit, the shop to the left with the orange sign, is another electronics store in Akihabara.

    Of course Tamotsu wouldn’t just build any normal PC – instead he builds a mobile apparatus equipped with a highly intelligent A.I., which he lovingly names Pyuko. Much to Mayo's annoyance, he takes his new ‘girlfriend’ instead of her on his daily patrol around Akihabara, showing her various landmarks of the area, like the Mansei Bridge here.

  The Radio Kaikan building. 

    Labi is operated by Yamada Denki and is located just across the street from the southern Akihabara Electric Town exit of the JR Akihabara Station. The store mainly sells household electronics and computers.

    The building to the left is the backside of Taito’s Hey Arcade, one of my personal favorites, mainly because I got my first out of many, many prize figures there (a Mami figure from The iDOLM@STER series).

    Akiba LED, for all your fancy LED needs. 

    Everybody loves gachapon (capsule toys), and the Akihabara Gatchapon Kaikan is a whole shop filled with nothing else but gatcha machines. But for some odd reason, I never get the ones I want. Seriously, I really don’t need three little Hanamiya figures (the unfair spider guy from Kuroko's Basketball).

    Of course the computers had to turn into killer robots at some point in the story.

  The Sumitomo Fudosan Akihabara Building. 

    Just outside of the northern Akihabara Electric Town entrance of JR Akihabara Station are the popular Gundam Café and the AKB48 Cafe and Shop.

  The Akihabara Crossfield complex outside of JR Station houses the Tokyo Anime Center, where anime related exhibitions and events are held. 

    The widely famous Melonbooks store (green sign to the left) specializes in doujinshi.

    In the tenth episode, Mayo and Tamotsu spend their date restaurant hopping. Their first stop is the Indian restaurant Bengal. The curry restaurant has been in business for over 40 years now, and is located in one of Akihabara’s side alleys. 

    Their second stop is right next door. According to Mayo, Gansen is Akihabara’s most famous Chinese restaurant.

    They then head to Kitchen Jiro, the western style restaurant has also been featured in the popular Steins;Gate games.
