Growing up, I was never exposed to premium denim. Back in the day we wore Just USA’s, Old Navy jeans, or other brands of that sort, that were typically in the $30-$50 range. I have a specific memory from high school where I was judgmental towards someone who spent around $100 on destroyed skinnies. We were sitting on the bleachers during swim class (I forget why) and her jeans were topic of conversation amongst the class. It was around 2007/2008 when the destroyed denim trend was revived once again. She had incredibly cute Abercrombie and Fitch jeans on and my classmates were poking fun at her for spending as much as she did for jeans “with holes in them”. I don’t recall saying much, I just remember not being able to fathom spending that much money on a single pair of denim.

 I bought my first pair of premium denim Freshman year of college (which was right after the swim class scandal). I was going through a hard time financially and was very stressed with all I had on my plate as a young adult. Senior year in High school I was ten pounds heavier than where my weight typically lies and by Freshman year in college I lost 20 pounds. I knew that this was temporary for my body, but had no clothes that fit me properly. Instead of purchasing several pairs of inexpensive jeans to hold me over until I regained weight, I decided to invest in one pair of nice jeans. I went to Nordstrom and found my first pair of 7 For All Mankind skinnies. Although they no longer fit, I still had these tucked away in a dresser drawer until about two months ago when passed them down to my younger sister.

 In 2010 I began working at San Francisco’s #1 rated boutique, Ambiance, aka denim heaven. It became part of my job to know about the many brands they carried like the back of my hand. Aside from learning about the product, I also had to rock it. This is when my premium denim collection grew exponentially, and I now own several pairs of J Brands, 7's, AGs, and other premium brands. Aside from loving the styles I also learned the value in investing in more expensive denim. They truly fit better, last longer, and are typically more stylish.

  Lately, I have fallen into "the legging rut", where all I want to wear are my new high waisted Alo Yoga leggings. I realized it’s because I haven’t shopped for denim in a while and I didn't feel comfortable in some pairs or others were no longer flattering. Back in March I received a Nordstrom Rack gift card for my birthday, from one of my best friends, and I finally put it into use a few days ago! I found the most amazing pair of Hudson jeans and I feel so lucky. I am familiar with the brand because we carried them when I worked at Bloomingdale’s, but I have never owned a pair. Out of curiosity, I asked the room attendant if a size down was available. After kindly checking she informed me that they were an online return and were the only pair they had in store. I tried them on again and realized they fit pretty amazing and a size down was not necessary. I purchased the Nico cut, they are a mid-rise skinny with a 28 inch inseam (which is cropped for other people, but perfect for my short legs). I am so excited to have found my new favorite jeans. I topped off the look with my favorite off the shoulder sweater by Freepeople and my new Dolce Vita booties. It’s time to do a denim purge on all the other denim I wont be wearing anymore!
