ITS TIME TO DECLARE A YEAR OF CHICAGO DANCE
The City of Chicago and also the League of Chicago Theaters declared 2019 “The Year of Chicago Theatre.” anyone who has been following dance in Chicago in recent years can attest to the very fact that it's currently time to declare a “Year of Chicago Dance.”
As the latest installment in its “Made in Chicago” Dance Series, the Auditorium Theatre conferred a double bill that includes 2 Latinx firms deeply unmoving within the city: Cerqua Diego Rivera Dance Theatre (celebrating its twentieth anniversary), and Ensemble Espanol Spanish Dance Theater
The first 1/2 the concert was dedicated to “American Catracho,” an epic, deeply moving work regarding the plight of occupant immigrants seeking refuge within the U.S. (“Cartracho” may be a dyslogistic, discriminatory word of Honduran origin.)
Created and directed by Wilfredo Cerqua (with extra choreography by Noelle Kayser and Christian Denice), and that includes a surprising score by Joe Cerqua fantastically performed by the nine-piece Cerqua Diego Rivera dance band, the work is an elaborate, richly reminiscent of, at moments sharply satiric evocation of the numerous stages within the method of immigration.
It begins with a lyrical, push-pull sequence magic reminiscences of the cities left behind, then moves on to recommend the numerous dangers and challenges ashore and water of “The Crossing,” the strain at the border, the eye-opening expertise of America (with the haunting refrain, , and at last, a function dance club scene, “Land of Dreams.”
