genuine question as someone who knows next to nothing about music and has only ocassionally listened to lovejoy's songs. Whats up with sex sells

okay so sex sells is the most extreme example of what i find to be an issue in a lot of lovejoy songs, which is that wilbur’s voice tends to be very weak and often does not have enough force behind it to make what he’s singing have the impact that it should. some of this comes down to mixing (for example — i would like perfume so much better than i do if the instrumentals did not overpower his voice) but with others it comes down to where the song is placed in his range. lbr, a lot of people especially in that scene are not particularly good singers, but they pull it off by putting enough energy into their voice that it kind of works anyway. wilbur often doesn’t do this and with sex sells especially, it’s because it’s too high and he has to go into his falsetto, which is just kind of bad. long story short the song is just too high. i’m a fucking soprano and i would lower it for me because it just sounds dumb when you’re up in your head voice like that. this is especially apparent when you compare the recorded version of sex sells to like the live one with tommy. it’s grounded in a much better part of his range and as a result sounds way better. 

so like the cover they did sucked and all but i am more happy with that because it seems like wilbur is working on moving out of his falsetto which i don’t think is ever going to be super strong and building his lower range instead. i think cmwyl is really great because a. it’s mixed better so that the vocals aren’t drowned out by the instrumentals (or the other way around) and b. wilbur’s placed it in a much more sustainable part of his range that allows him to sound stronger and more connected to what he’s singing. 

tldr: lower the goddamn song i’m begging you

We are back!

Hello again! We are holding a second dtblr secret santa event this december for the holidays! Everyone who would like to spread some holiday cheer and create something for someone in our little community is welcome to join. Once again, here is some information and rules for the event:

All giftee assignments have been sent out! Please make sure you have received your assignment, and that there are no issues with it!

We ask writers to write a fic with a 1k word minimum.

For artists we ask you to create a fully finished drawing-- whatever this means for you.

For webweaves and other formats its hard to set one rule for a minimum, so we just ask you to put some effort in and to be considerate enough to make something you would also be happy to receive.

If you are not able to finish your gift for whatever reason, please let us know as soon as possible!!

Be Enough by @gottagetshiver SO SO GOOD and so angsty i think this is one of those fics where the angst is so satisfyingly good and the ending is so cathartic that you feel everything else is worth it.

YESS i love hadestown sm i got into it in i think 2017? back after great comet closed a lot of us moved onto hadestown since amber gray and rachel chavkin were involved with both. anyway there’s been so many changes with various productions that i’ve liked (wait for me ii bridge) or not liked (london chant ii best chant ii) but the saddest loss is orpheus’s red jacket from the nytw production 😔 also you would not believe the amount of discourse over the way songs are titled on the broadway cast recording that happened in 2019 it was insane but alas i still use ii instead of reprise lmao
