Angels Fall AU: Revamp (Info Dump)

Warnings: Death, violence, angels, demons, gods, etc.

I've decided to sever this more from religion and stuff! So let me go ahead and fix this up.

Angels Fall is basically an unveiling of two separate races that remained hidden until they reintegrated into society. The races are demons and angels.

To be clear, none of these are changed into what they are, they are born this way. This basically puts the typical views of Angels and Demons into an entirely different lens.

The places you'd mostly find where they hid are Cartos and Erebus (which are NOT Heaven and Hell.)

Places you should know:

Cartos and Erebus: The Two Kingdoms that many people who seek power and knowledge search for. These two kingdoms were once one and were part of a continent/country Vexus. Both these two kingdoms were originally four, known as Chrono, Interis, Spiris, and Demis. Since the war, the country/continent was split into two, with Erebus going Underground, while Cartos remained in the sky.

Other Various Places to be known:

The Country/Continent of Vividus: It's a large and huge continent and country. Known for their prosperous trading and beautiful land. The Country/Continent is ruled by two very wonderful monarchs. They are also known for their notorious pirate crew, which is extremely well-liked. 

Vitalus: A beautiful kingdom that seems to loom over the others. It is one of the largest kingdoms and is very sought after.

Malefis: Vitalus's sister kingdom. Another large kingdom like Vitalus. A prosperous and very sought-after kingdom.

Illumine: The main kingdom of Vividus. Ruled by a queen and her ex-husband. A prosperous and large kingdom that is close to its sister kingdoms, Malefis and Vitalus. Most of the time, the rulers of the kingdoms meet here.

Cerulis: The fourth largest kingdom. In comparison to their sister kingdoms, they are more closed off and less sought after. They currently have no ruler due to a civil war in the kingdom. The king and his sons are missing.

Sigmis: Another large kingdom on par with Cerulis. Ruled by a benevolent king with his sons as heirs. It is a kingdom with a strong trade route as it's near a coast.

Millenis: A Kingdom lost to time. Only known by rumors and old tales.

Smaller but important places!

The Lovers' Cavern: The cavern is decorated in beautiful, special jewels. In the center of the cavern is a lake with a flower field around it. The flower field can emphasize romantic feelings if you're with someone you love (romantically). In the lake, you can pull out beautiful gems that are, supposedly, related to the SOUL of your soulmate (this depends on who you're in love with and believe is your soulmate). Rumor has it that if you try to swim in the lake and swim to the bottom, you enter a different universe.

The Moonlight Forest: It looks like any normal forest in the daytime. However, if you enter it at night with a moon, rumor has it you enter a different world, and the forest seems completely different at night than it does in the day. 

The Field of Flowers: A beautiful field with all types of flowers in it. Yet, poisonous flowers do not harm the people who enter. Rumor has it that if you fall asleep in a flower field and wake up, you'll be in a different universe. 

The Lake of Memories: A lake in the center of a beautiful forest. Rumor has it, that if you look into the lake, you will see someone you didn't know you missed or didn't remember, but in general, you just see someone you miss.

There are churches around that can be investigated, where they depend on what deities are worshipped there.

So what are Angels and Demons?

Angels: They are beings from Cartos. They are near-immortal beings who exist to help assist deities. They typically take on roles that will be explained. They are typically are known to have wings. They are typically shapeshifters, but they mostly come out looking similar to a monster. They have a magic called "Divine Magic".

Demons: They are beings from Erebus. They are near-immortal beings who exist to help assist deities. They are known to have horns and tails (occasionally wings).They are typically shapeshifters, but they mostly come out looking similar to a monster. They have a magic called "Demonic Magic".

Roles of Angels:

Executioners: Executioners are angels versed in violence and death. They are often the ones who are more promptly in the fray of battle. They are often more closely related to Isaac as he makes their weapons. They are considered a big part of justice in Cartos.

Saviors: These are angels who take on roles like doctors and firefighters. They help and assist in dangerous, disastrous situations. They often are the ones who help in search parties and rescue missions.

Reapers: These are angels hand-picked by Pele to help her guide souls back to the afterlife. They often are the ones who find them and take them to her, but they cannot physically guide them to the afterlife like Pele can since they are not dead.

Guardians: These are considered as teachers and protectors of the Deities. While anyone can be one, most often, executioners can become Guardians. They are charged with looking over and teaching students and often are the right-hand people of the Deities.

Roles of Demons:

Gatekeeper: Gatekeepers protect a variety of things, more often than not, they protect the archives of certain Gods when they are not in presence. They also are the ones who guard the gates of Erebus and Cartos. There are quite a few who protect sacred or otherwise lands. They are trained to work with Guardians.

Judge: Judges are the ones in charge of passing judgment on people who break angel or demon law. They work closely with executioners and oftentimes, they are not as hands on, but they do make sure the executioner knows what the person did and their judgment should they not improve.

Warden: Wardens are in charge of protecting jails and prisons. They make sure everything is up to date and working with rehabilitating certain criminals. They are to make sure criminals and the like do not escape. They are trained with Executioners and Judges. They work closely with both.

Guide: Reapers most often collect souls, but Guides are the ones who lead them. Sometimes, reapers and guides work together to get a more resistant soul down to the afterlife. Guides often handle children and scared souls. They are often a lot less intimidating than Reapers.

Additional Facts:

An angel's wings are both their blessing and their weakness. An angel's wings are directly connected to their SOUL so injuring their wings does a number on an angel's health.

Demons can, albeit rarely, have wings, and, like angels, their wings are their greatest weakness and blessing. Since wings are connected to their SOUL so harming their wings takes a good chunk of health.

Angels and Demons have a special spell that occurs when their wings or horns and tails are out. (Since allowing them to be seen allows a pure flow of their divine and demonic magic.)

The amount of wings an angel has represents how powerful they are and how old they are.

Angels and Demons formed small communities and queens were appointed. However, one day, the kingdoms fell to war and the queens were never seen again.

Rogue Demons, Corrupted Angels, Angel Hunters, and Demon Slayers

What are Rogue Demons? These are demons that have gone “rogue”. They tend to kill people indiscriminately and never makes deals and steals SOULs that way. In demon law, this is forbidden and is punishable by death.

What are Corrupted Angels? These are angels that have been "corrupted". They are cunning, and manipulative, and can hide in plain sight. They tend to kill people indiscriminately and have the ability to make it seem as though the innocent people they have killed were deserving of it. In angel law, this is forbidden and is punishable by death.

What are Demon Slayers? Demon Slayers are commonly humans (but can be angels, other demons, monsters, etc.) who deal with rogue demons. They tend to either kill or incapacitate them long enough for judgment. They have to be authorized by others before they are able to. They are usually assigned to a specific rogue demon that matches their skills. Like, amateur Demon Slayers hunt small-time rogue demons. While expert Demon Slayers hunt rogue demons that are wanted and/or too dangerous to be hunted by others.

What are Angel Hunters? Angel Hunters are commonly humans (but can be other angels, demons, monsters, etc.) who deal with corrupt angels. They tend to either kill or incapacitate them long enough for judgment. However, they are incredibly rare as Corrupted Angels are very hard to spot. They have to be authorized by others before they are able to. However, they are very rare to be found and oftentimes, they go off of rumors and investigate the angel in question. Similar to Demon Slayers, they are required to kill or apprehend the Corrupt Angel for trial. Some amateur Angel Hunters hunt Corrupt Angels who are easy to spot. Expert Angel Hunters go deep into investigating the Corrupt Angel and make sure there aren't mass casualties when dealing with them.

The Fae and Beast Tamers:

This is when the Fae started to make small appearances and made themselves known as the fifth race, so some history is unreliable as it has no real knowledge about them. However, they are often defined as what you'd consider fairies, mermaids, etc. There are Beast Tamers, too, but those are more of a sub-species of Humans, so I'll explain them here real quick.

Beast tamers are a human subspecies. Beast Tamers are usually genetically modified humans who are stronger than natural humans, monsters, etc. because their SOUL is a mix of Monster SOUL magic and human SOUL magic. They have physical characteristics that make them stand out more than humans, such as wings, fangs, claws, and unnatural strength. Beast Tamers with fangs can eat raw meat. Beast Tamers with wings can fly. Beast Tamers with claws can use them as they are made to be used. 

What are deities? How are they defined in this AU?

The deities are deities. They are powerful immortal beings. However, it is important to say that many of them were once just normal while others were born. They have a set few rules that a couple of them have broken before.

Who are the deities?

Life and Death Family: Iyla (Goddess of Life), Pele (Goddess of Death), Ila (Goddess of Souls), Issac (God of the Forge), and Faye (Pele’s Adoptive Daughter and the Goddess of Mercy)

Galaxy: Andromeda (Goddess of the Galaxy), Boronia (Goddess of the Deep Galaxy), and Browallia (Goddess of Young Galaxies)

War and Healing: Tyr (God of War and Justice) and Sarafina (Goddess of Peace and Healing)

Big Water Places Family: Bourne (God of the Ocean), Dydite (Goddess of the Rivers), Caysus (God of the Sea), and Onera (Goddess of the Sea).

Time Deities: Signe (God of the Past), Aeturnus (Deity of the Present), and Oriana (Goddess of the Future)

Order/Chaos: Myana (Goddess of Chaos) and Aona (Goddess of Order).

Secrets/Lies/Truth: Ethos (God of Secrets), Yros (God of Lies), and Kova (Goddess of Truth).

Elemental: Zitia (Goddess of Water), Alios (God of Fire), Iphine (Goddess of Earth), and Nohlios (God of Wind).

Seasonal: Kinera (Goddess of Winter), Fedmir (God of Autumn), Nylena (Goddess of Spring), and Azion (God of Summer).

Storms: Driris (Goddess of Winter/Ice Storms), Phias (Deity of Wind Storms), Alteus (God of Rain storms), and Dytrix (Goddess of Thunder/Lightning Storms).

Light, Dark, Sun, and Moon: Griella (Goddess of Dark), Kyana (Goddess of Light), Ynir (God of Night/Moon), and Lotar (God of Day/Sun)

Love and Hate: Davina (Goddess of Love), Keres (Goddess of Hate), Lev (God of Love), and Reinhardt (God of Hate)

Magic: Fleur (Goddess of Light Magic), Ione (Late Goddess of Dark Magic), Helvina (Goddess of Light Magic), and Bellona (Current Goddess of Dark Magic)

Potions and Magical Objects: Olearia (Goddess of Potions) and Wisteria (Goddess of Magical Objects)

Fate: Emersyn (Deity of Fate), Evangeline (Goddess of Fate), and Edmund (God of Fate)

Deep Sea and Sky: Archemoros (Elder God of the Deep Seas), Myrsky (Elder God of the Sky), Tynan (Younger God of the Deep Seas), and Neifion (Younger God of the Sky)

Animals: Nerine (Goddess of Animals)

Dreams and Miscellaneous: Joldewin (God of Sleep), Elio (God of Wishes and Dreams), Hellebore (God of Poison), Grimoire (God of Curses and Nightmares), Ilarion (God of Joy) and Cyfrin (God of Mischief and Daydreams)

"Evil": Adros (Evil: God of Revenge), Deirdre (Evil: Goddess of Misfortune), and Renen (Evil: Deity of Mountains)

Miscellaneous: Daella (Goddess of Resistance) and Izelia (Goddess of Forgiveness)

A bit of History on the AU:

“Long ago, Four Races ruled over the Earth. Humans, Monsters, Angels, and Demons. The Four Races lived in peace working together to keep order. Angels and Demons helped guide the monsters and humans. The Four Races worshipped two Gods. A woman named [redacted] and a man named [redacted]. The Goddess would bless the good deeds of the beings who worshipped her. Her gift was a fertile harvest and blessed the hunts. She was Life. She would gift the life of all the living beings. The God would shield the Races from the War of other Gods. His gifts were a bountiful amount of wealth and ore being easily found. He was Death. He leads the past beings to a peaceful afterlife… If they deserved it. One day, a selfish, greedy Human had slaughtered the Goddess and gained her abilities… But instead of being kind and benevolent, they were cruel and harsh. They would let families die of starvation and watch as families suffered. The God, enraged by the actions of this human, declared war on them. The Four Races joined his side in a war that lasted years… Unfortunately, the God had fallen and no one was able to take his place. The world fell into disarray. The Four Races continued to fight the remaining Deity until the Demons were sentenced away. The Angels were the only Celestial Beings remaining to protect the Humans and the Monsters. Unfortunately, the Angels began to dwindle and fade. The Deity was cruel. They killed, they cursed, and they were unmerciful. The Monsters and the Humans cried for another Deity. Someone, anyone to SAVE them… Thus a miracle birth of twins had fallen onto them. It was as if the Goddess blessed them with a chance of Life. The Deity that had taken her place was enraged. "This is impossible!” They cried. “I am Life!” They were ready to tear the world apart to kill these two young twins. The Twins were taken by the community with their family. The Angel had blessed these half-monster children with Angelic Powers... Unaware they were already blessed. As the two grew, one would gain the ambition to take down the Deity as the Deity once did with the Goddess. The Younger Twin had convinced her twin to allow her to try.The Older Twin agreed as she prayed for her sister’s safety to the deceased Goddess and God. The Younger Twin was gravely injured as she faced the Deity, but emerged victoriously! She was given the privilege of being the new Life Goddess. The Older Twin was going to accept that she would die sooner than her twin, but then, she was given the privilege of being the new Death God. The Twins ruled together and had brought peace back to the Four Races as the Angels began to reappear as well as the Demons, but the story of their triumph and the existence of Demons and Angels would fade into obscurity. This tale is but a fairy tale to tell children when they sleep… No one but the remaining people of their time, recalls the truth of this tale.“

Some Cultural stuff to be known:

Angels have a “fledgling ceremony”. It’s basically when a fledgling (or fledglings) gets their wings. Anyone is really invited to see it, but you're definitely going to see Deities, Angels, and others. (Angels celebrate the fledglings with a short, or long depending on the fledglings, ceremony before a party. This usually includes freshly made food depending on the fledgling. They have a form of bird (chicken, turkey, etc.) or just meat of the choosing of the fledgling, or they don’t have meat at all. Deities and adults get drinks of wine or alcohol. Children get a choice of a child-safe drink (water, milk, etc.)

There is also the “Wings Ceremony”. This ceremony is to celebrate an adult angel getting another set of wings. (The limit is tending to be 4 pairs of wings. Very rarely do they get to five or six pair of wings.) They have any form of food the angel wants, but traditionally it’s either streak, ham, turkey, or chicken. Wings Ceremonies are basically like birthdays. However, angels do celebrate the day they got their wings as an anniversary and birthdays if they remember them.

The next is the “Role Ceremony”. This is basically when they decide their roles. There is always a huge feast full of meat, drinks, and vegetables. The Deities and their people usually come to see what they decide their role is..not that they have to choose one..some angels just choose to not pick a role and take on a job like a musician, chef, etc.

There are “Tamer Ceremonies”. When an angel, human, demon, etc. shows signs of being a tamer and tame their first creature. Their parents celebrate it.

A constant in all these ceremonies is… Angel Food cake or white cake of any kind.

Currently working on something to do with yokai and urban legends, but also working on learning Japanese.

Harlow Shigihara (the girl) first gets a taste of the paranormal after she moves to Japan to help a distant cousin and one night she accidentally takes the wrong train and ends up at Kisaragi Station.

Norogumi Okushiro (the boy) is a part of a thing similar to the Demon Slayer Corp of well, Demon Slayer but it also has elements of other stuff since not everyone can see the paranormal. He was on the same train as Harlow to see if things were running normally and when he saw her, he knew things weren't good.

But that's all for now. There's a few other things, like Harlow has a really hard time with kanji and the like since she's mostly lived in the U.S, but that's the main jist of it. Updates will probably be slow going.

Buffy ‘97 #1 - Jeremy Lambert, Marianna Ignazzi & Qistina Khalidah

In this special celebratory issue, Buffy Summers and Willow Rosenberg find themselves trapped... in a '90s teen magazine! But obviously it's not just any old magazine-this one's part of a demon's diabolical plan to feed on teenage insecurities. Meanwhile, in true '90s makeover montage-style, Spike gives Giles a hand with a fresh new look to impress a very special someone! Sooo. LET'S BEGIN!

What ARE Demon Slayers? Demon Slayers are commonly humans (but can be angels, other demons, monsters, etc.) who deal with rogue demons. They tend to either kill or incapacitate them long enough for judgment.

What are rogue demons? These are demons that have gone "rogue". They tend to kill people indiscriminately and never makes deals and steals SOULs that way. In demon law, this is forbidden and is punishable by death.

Demon Law? Demons, like angels, are citizens of Ebott and other areas. While demons are much more lenient on their rules and regulations, they do still have laws and abide by the laws of their chosen home.

Can demons eat human/monster/angel food? Depends on the demon, but most older demons are unable to, so they feast on the SOULs of the already lost or in a contract for sustenance. Some older demons are able to eat monster food as it is the product of a SOUL, but they have to eat a lot of it.

Why do Demon Slayers hunt demons? They have to be authorized by others before they are able to. They are usually assigned to a specific rogue demon that matches their skills. Like, amateur Demon Slayers hunt small time rogue demons. While expert Demon Slayers (such as Arden) hunt rogue demons that are wanted and/or too dangerous to be hunted by others.

Are demons just humanoid? No! Demons can take on many forms. Sometimes they can take on the form of a monster, a human, etc. It's up to the demon and they can change their appearances, like angels, but are much easier caught by others by their magic.

Unpacking the Mother of Skeletons

So I was just talking to some friends about this page and those references, and my psychology degree-possessing butt started explaining the wire mommy reference, which led me to researching the other references, and now I’m going to unpack them here for your benefit.

Before I do this, let me be clear that I am not agreeing with Grant Morrison or his portrayal of Talia nor am I agreeing with this use of these cultural, religious and social sciencey references.  Just trying to break down what he’s getting at here. 

Ahem.

So the context is this:  Morrison’s Talia is 1. On a rampage of destruction because Bruce won’t date her and 2. Rejecting Heretic’s desire for her love and approval.  Noteworthy: Heretic is Damian’s clone, so he is her genetic son.

Okay, here we go... in order, except for Kali which is last because boy is that a reference to unpack.

Tiamat: Okay so Tiamat is a goddess, in this case the ancient Mesopotamian goddess of creation, the mother of gods and monsters.  She gives birth to the gods, but her husband realizes they want to depose him, so he wars against their children and their children destroy him, and then Tiamat wages war on their children.  She is ultimately killed but not before creating the dragons who have poison in their veins instead of blood... but anyway I’m pretty sure the point he’s getting at is that her progeny rebels against her and she in turn wages war on them.  This may also link back to the final bits of Batman Inc where Ra’s is set to unleash Damian’s clones - Talia’s unnatural children.  Dragons with poison instead of blood, metaphorically.

Medusa: This is a stupid reference because the actual myth (at least the ones I’ve personally encountered) is that Medusa was r_ped in the temple of Athena.  And Athena decided to act like a Greek God does, blaming the victim and cursing her to become a monster.  Not super relevant except that Morrison has previously referenced this as the story of a beautiful woman who became a monster after her love was rejected - no idea where he got that from, but I think that’s fairly self-explanatory in the context of a Talia who has gone warpath because Bruce won’t date her.

The Wire Mommy: So I’m pretty sure this is a reference to the Harry Harlow rhesus monkey studies in the 1930s.  So basically this was a study conducted in, I believe, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where Harlow got some babby rhesus monkeys and removed them from their mothers and placed them in one of two primary environments:

An inanimate substitute mother made of wire holds food and a similar substitute made of terry cloth is without food.

An inanimate substitute mother made of terry cloth holds food and a similar wire mother does not have food.

Okay so the findings of this study were basically that the baby monkeys didn’t like the wire mother.  In the case where the food was with the wire mother, they would go over and eat and then dash it over to the terry cloth mother and cling to that one.  

What I gather from this, especially in the context of the above where Heretic is looking to Talia to love and nurture him, is that she’s saying that, despite having given him life and physically supported him (in other words, having the metaphorical food), she has no warmth or love for him.  She is made of wire and without comfort or softness.

The Red Queen: I’m not superfamiliar with the Alice books beyond Wonderland so I did look this up on Wikipedia as well.  Therein lies this quote from Carroll:

The Red Queen I pictured as a Fury, but of another type; her passion must be cold and calm - she must be formal and strict, yet not unkindly; pedantic to the 10th degree, the concentrated essence of all governesses

So, again, a comparison between Talia and a cold, dispassionate anger/hatred, and a female/maternal figure without warmth.

Mother of Skeletons doesn’t seem to be a specific reference - if you’ve got one, feel free to drop that on me, too, but I couldn’t find anything.  I’m guessing it’s another way of reiterating this point that she is a destructive maternal figure who devours or destroys her unworthy children.

And finally...

Kali: Kali is a major Hindu deity, the wife of Shiva, and one of the more famous Hindu gods.  Please note I am not Hindu, I’m not going to front as some kind of expert and if you know better than me, feel free to correct me.  Anyway, Kali has many aspects, some of which are extraordinarily destructive and some of which are less so.  To find out which one he’s specifically referencing all we need to do is look at the art, though:

Kali’s most common pose in paintings is in her most fearsome guise as the slayer of demons, where she stands or dances with one foot on a collapsed Shiva and holds a severed head. She wears a skirt of severed human arms, a necklace of decapitated heads, and earrings of dead children, and she often has a terrifying expression with a lolling tongue which drips blood. --Ancient History Encyclopedia

So okay looking at Wikipedia because I’m lazy... some relevant references, and you’ll see how the other names she gives for herself back this up:

Rāmprasād comments in many of his other songs that Kāli is indifferent to his wellbeing, causes him to suffer, brings his worldly desires to nothing and his worldly goods to ruin. He also states that she does not behave like a mother should and that she ignores his pleas:

Can mercy be found in the heart of her who was born of the stone? [a reference to Kali as the daughter of Himalaya] Were she not merciless, would she kick the breast of her lord? Men call you merciful, but there is no trace of mercy in you, Mother. You have cut off the heads of the children of others, and these you wear as a garland around your neck. It matters not how much I call you "Mother, Mother." You hear me, but you will not listen.

To be a child of Kāli, Rāmprasād asserts, is to be denied of earthly delights and pleasures. Kāli is said to refrain from giving that which is expected.

So, a mother who, having been born of stone herself, lacks mercy and warmth.  Given Morrison’s take on Talia’s background and her relationship to Ra’s... self-explanatory pretentious reference.  But that’s not all:

Vamakali is usually worshipped by non-householders. The pose shows the conclusion of an episode in which Kali was rampaging out of control after destroying many demons. Shiva, fearing that Kali would not stop until she destroyed the world, could only think of one way to pacify her. He lay down on the battlefield so that she would have to step on him. Seeing her consort under her foot, Kali realized that she had gone too far, and calmed down.

Okay this is super relevant because one thing that people often miss about Morrison’s Talia is that her acts of destruction are ultimately meant to get Bruce’s attention.  She undertakes this villainous rampage because he only pays attention to villains: she doesn’t even think it’s interesting, she mocks her own plans and calls them stupid.  She says she’s doing this because Bruce prefers things black and white and over the top.  

And in the end, she shows up in the Batcave, declares that they’re going to fight to the death, and then has a passionate kissing session with him...

...seriously, everyone remembers the kiss but no one talks about how Bruce is still into it.  

But anyway, so they make out, and she poisons him...

...then declares she’s doing all this as a gift to him, expresses frustration that he doesn’t understand, and demands that he beg her for help.

Here’s my point:  she’s not actually trying to kill him or take the world down.  She’s trying to force Bruce to submit to her, at which point she would feel satisfied and come back back from the edge.  As evidenced by her earlier panels expressing her frustration that he won’t stop or admit defeat.

In fact, a great deal of what she does in Batman Inc. seems to be done to elicit a specific response from Bruce - for example, she has a hit put on Damian, but it’s really just to mess with Bruce’s head, it’s not really meant to result in Damian actually dying.  I would say this comes back to this idea that the opposite of love is apathy not hate - love and hate are both intertwined and Morrison’s Talia both hates and loves him, or rather loves him until she hates him and hates him until she loves him.

This reminds me, one day I should write a thing about how Morrison’s Bruce/Talia story is basically a tragic romance and Talia is the actual love interest of his run... or should I because I don’t really want to be the person who writes longass meta about runs and interpretations that I actually hate.

Después, le inyectaron una serie de líquidos que la habían dejado inconsciente pero sintiendo cada uno de los cortes que le habían aplicado a diversas zonas de su cuerpo.

No soportaba más cortes, ni inyecciones. La que una vez fue la lisa piel de su cuerpo no era más que un mapa de los horrores a los que había sido sometida sin su consentimiento. ¿Y todo para qué?

—I… am —respondió, con la voz acartonada.Apenas si recordaba su propio timbre de voz. 

Los últimos días lo único que había hecho era gritar. Gritar de dolor. Gritar de agonía. Gritar de desesperación. Esperaba una muerte que nunca llegaba. 

—But I have a question for you —tosió, una sola vez, desquebrajándose la garganta en el proceso—. Why come to me? You know where she is. Why not simply take her yourself?

 Aunque no podía verlo, supo que su captor estaba esbozando una media sonrisa. Una sonrisa arrogante, soberbia y estúpida. La clase de sonrisa con la que ella soñaba partirle la cara.

—You are the best, the Council’s elite… why do you need me?

Collins salió de entre las sombras. Una vez había sido uno de los tres agentes de operaciones especiales del consejo. Una vez había dedicado toda su vida, junto a Weatherby y Smith, a limpiar todo aquello que el Consejo les ordenase. Una vez había sido leal a una causa que hacía tiempo parecía haberse esfumado.

—I don’t need you, Harlow —respondió, acercándose con las manos en los bolsillos—. You need me. You are nothing without your mojo, remember? A witch without her powers is just… completely useless.

—You stole them from me —le escupió ella, cerrando ambas manos en puños. Los grilletes estaban tan apretados que ese gesto sólo hizo que el metal se hundiese aún más en su piel. Pero no le importó.

—Details —replicó él, encogiéndose de hombros.

—You are working with demons —arqueó ambas cejas, lanzando una mirada al demonio justo detrás de él—. What would your beloved Council say about that?

Collins tomó una gran bocanada de aire, decepcionado.

—So you are not ready to make a deal.

Volteándose, le hizo un gesto al demonio, quien llevaba un largo cuchillo de carnicero en la mano. Harlow apenas tuvo una milésima de segundo para apreciar el brillo del filo antes de que éste se hundiera en su carne. El grito que salió de su garganta recorrió toda la mazmorra, colándose entre las grietas de piedra, adentrándose en los pasillos más profundos, en un intento por llegar a algún sitio donde ponerse estuviera a salvo. A pesar del dolor y de la pérdida de sangre, se mantuvo lúcida. Lo suficiente como para murmurar unas palabras que bien podrían haber sido de súplica o una maldición entre dientes. El demonio arrancó el filo de su cuerpo y un borbotón de sangre manó de entre sus resecos labios. No había tocado ningún órgano demasiado importante. Así lo dictaminaba Collins; no les servía de nada si perforaban un pulmón, el hígado o el mismo corazón. Muerta era completamente inútil. Quiso moverse, utilizar la última gota de magia que aún quedaba en sus venas. Percibía que Collins estaba distraído, alejado entre las sombras mientras el demonio se hacía cargo de ella. Era su oportunidad.

Con la escasa magia que palpitaba en su interior, creó una bola de fuego que derritió los grilletes que la sujetaban a la mesa. El demonio alzó el cuchillo, con intenciones de clavárselo en el cuello pero ya era demasiado tarde: con la mano libre, acababa de crear una segunda bola de fuego con la que le derritió el rostro. Mientras este gritaba y Collins se volteaba, alarmado, ella había creado una ráfaga de fuego que se lo llevó por delante. Atravesó la pared de piedra y ella no se quedó a comprobar si estaba muerto.

Una vez se deshizo de sus grilletes, echó a correr tan rápido como sus maltrechas piernas se lo permitieron. Los pasillos se le antojaron todos iguales, con escasa iluminación y una especie de líquido baboso rezumando de las paredes. Un par de licántropos surgieron en una bifurcación pero Harlow les escupió una lengua de fuego que los redujo a cenizas. Debía salir de ahí.Debía correr más deprisa.Una escalera se materializó a pocos metros y no dudó en saltar los escalones de dos en dos, a la espera de salir al aire fresco de la noche. Una puerta la estaba esperando al otro lado. Oía ruido a su espalda pero no se detuvo a identificar de qué se trataba. Cuando alcanzó el pomo, la brisa del alba le dio la bienvenida.

Emergió de lo que parecían unas minas abandonadas enterradas en el mismo suelo y siguió corriendo, adentrándose en el bosque. Los insectos se retorcían por todas partes, acompañándola en su escapada. Un pájaro pasó zumbando por encima de su cabeza y deseó convertirse en uno. Extender sus alas, alzar el vuelo y volver a casa. Sin embargo, Collins le había arrebatado eso. Le había arrebatado gran parte de sus poderes y, sin ellos, sólo le quedaba soñar.

Sus pies descalzos derraparon cuando un gigantesco licántropo negro azabache saltó delante de ella, impidiéndole el paso. La bestia adoptó una postura de ataque, lanzándole un rugido que provocó que le temblasen las piernas. No podía acobardarse ahora. Mejor morir desgarrada que volver a esa mazmorra, pensó para sí.

—You broke my heart, Harlow —dijo Collins, saliendo de detrás del licántropo. La mitad de su rostro estaba deformado, fruto de la ráfaga de fuego pero no parecía importarle—. You really broke my heart. I thought you wanted to make a deal. I thought you really believed in me and my view of a free world. A world without those stupid bitches who think they are special. A world without slayers or hunters. And now you are trying to escape? —negó con la cabeza, abatido—. You really broke my heart.

Harlow no estaba segura de si le quedaría magia suficiente en las venas para freírlos a ambos pero al menos, quiso intentarlo. Sin embargo, el licántropo fue más rápido: el zarpazo la golpeó con tanta fuerza que apenas tuvo tiempo de contener la respiración.Los insectos se retorcían por todas partes, acompañándola mientras era arrastrada de nuevo hacia su cautiverio. 

Un pájaro pasó zumbando por encima de su cabeza y, con el rostro marcado por la sangre, deseó convertirse en uno.

Here I am, spent weeks trying, uh, t-to get a single scrap of information about our mysterious demon collectors and no one bothers to tell me that Buffy's dating one of them?! Who else knows?! Xander: No one. No one else knows this. Anya, and that's it! Willow: And Spike. Giles: Spike?! Spike knew? Xander: Only the basic stuff. You know, that Riley is a commando and Professor Walsh is in charge. Giles: Professor Walsh!? That fishwife!? Willow: You know, she's actually not that bad once you get to-- (sees Giles' look) So, th-the demon is probably a little late. W-we'll just, you know-- Giles: Oh, forget it. Go on. You two clear off. I'll just stay a little longer just in case.

WILLOW: We were acting out a geometry problem, 'cause I read this really neat article that said kids learn math better if you, you stimulate their, uh, visual learning pattern. You know, using the right side of the brain instead of just the left? Stuff like that. BUFFY: Uh-huh. WILLOW: So we made a triangle with our bodies, and that's when I called Xander obtuse, and he got really grumpy, and then Dawn said we were "acute" triangle, and, well, hilarity ensued.
