[ad_1] Andrea Demerais had two fans running in her Burnaby, B.C., apartment all summer. But she says it accomplished little beyond pushing hot air around her home."It was just sweltering," she said. "Even in the nighttime, you just couldn't get any relief from it."Demerais, 49, says the heat also exacerbated her chronic health conditions, including osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia and paresthesia.Andrea Demerais, a tenant and ACORN member from Burnaby, B.C., says extreme indoor heat in the summer exacerbates her osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia and paresthesia. (Submitted by Andrea Demerais)"It really affected my joints and made me really, really sensitive," she said. "They were popping and cracking and making noises all the time. It was very painful."While Demerais says she would be able to afford the additional $30-40 in electricity costs per month to run an air conditioner, she can't afford the upfront costs of buying a new unit."I only get like $1,500 a month from being on disability. My rent is $1,000. So it doesn't go very far," she said.Demerais was one of 445 tenants across Canada surveyed by the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), an organization of low- and moderate-income people. The survey asked renters to share their experiences with extreme indoor heat, including barriers they experience in securing adequate cooling.Anonymized raw survey data shared exclusively with CBC showed that tenants with access to AC reported adverse effects of extreme heat less often than those without. "The temperature gets upward around 30 C in here as opposed to 33 C just outside on my balcony," said Sandra McCrone, a 64-year-old tenant from South Calgary even with fans running and blackout curtains blocking out the sunlight during the day.ACORN's summary report, published Thursday, identified the most common barriers to having air conditioning: high costs, threats of eviction, and lease agreements that prohibit installing AC units.Eviction threatened The ACORN extreme heat survey builds on issues raised during CBC's Urban Heat Project this summer, where temperature and humidity trackers were installed in 50 homes in five cities across Canada. In half the households where CBC collected data, it showed people spent a majority of time above 26 C — the maximum indoor temperature widely considered safe by experts. With little to no central cooling, the apartments stayed hot through the night even as temperatures fell outside. Shelley Petit, an ACORN member and chair of the New Brunswick Coalition of Persons with Disabilities, says she has heard from tenants in New Brunswick social housing who have been evicted or threatened with eviction for installing air conditioners."We've seen people that have had medical prescription notes from their doctor stating, 'This person needs to keep the temperature of the environment cool because they have asthma, or they have a breathing problem, or they have a heart condition,'" she said. "How are you evicting people because they need an air conditioning unit for their health?"WATCH | N.B. disability advocate says people are choosing between rent and cooling: Long-term costs of extreme indoor heat will add up, says N.B. woman with disabilityFeatured VideoShelley Petit, an ACORN member and chair of the New Brunswick Coalition of Persons with Disabilities, says many people are being forced to choose between paying for food, rent, medications, and cooling down their homes. Petit says this will drive up long-term costs as more people are hospitalized because of extreme indoor heat.In a statement to CBC News, Housing New Brunswick confirmed that "tenants are not permitted to have window-mounted air conditioning units" as a result of a 2021 policy, to prevent damage to windows and accidents resulting from window AC units falling. However, Housing New Brunswick said that tenants are permitted portable floor units, and encouraged tenants with concerns about their living arrangements to contact the corporation. The issue isn't unique to New Brunswick: of the 445 tenants surveyed by ACORN, 27 people said they were threatened with eviction by their landlord if they didn't remove their air conditioner. Twenty-three people said their leases forbid them from having AC units.David Hutniak, CEO of LandlordBC, says that landlords who threaten to evict tenants over air conditioning are not representative of the industry, calling the practice 'irresponsible and reprehensible.' (Chris Corday/CBC)Tenants in B.C. have also told CBC News they've been threatened with eviction if they install air conditioning units. David Hutniak, CEO of LandlordBC, a landlord association with 3,300 members who collectively manage about 175,000 rental units, says this practice is not representative of the broader sector."That kind of behavior is irresponsible and reprehensible," he said. "Any landlord who is professional and looking to have successful tenancies is going to have a conversation with their tenant about this, and will try to accommodate."Hutniak stressed, however, that tenants should have "constructive conversations" with their landlords before installing things like window AC units. Maria Rekrut, president of the Ontario Landlords Association, agrees."Open communication is the way to go with this," she said. "That's what I've been able to do for 23 years."Old buildings prone to lacking coolingBernadette Mamo, an ACORN member from Scarborough, Ont., was one of the participants in CBC's Urban Heat Project. Mamo, 64, has been living in her apartment with her 86-year-old mother since 1967, but says they can't install AC because the fuses in her aging unit will blow, causing her to lose power.Bernadette Mamo, left, and her 86-year-old mother, right, sit inside their Scarborough apartment during a heat wave in Toronto this September. (Farrah Merali/CBC News)"If you're buying that many fuses all the time, instead of $25 a month for electricity, you're paying a whole lot more," she said.As a result, Mamo and her mother endured the heat all summer, during which time CBC News recorded temperatures as high as 28 C — 31 C with humidity."I worry about [my mother] getting heat stroke, even though she's not outside, because it does [exacerbate] everything: your health, your breathing, trying to focus," she said.Hutniak says that adapting units like Mamo's will require coordination from landlords and governments."Cooling an old apartment building is not a simple matter of plugging in a portable air conditioner.… At the end of the day, the electrical capacity within those buildings is generally inadequate," he said.He adds that retrofitting aging buildings would also incur high costs that he says many landlords cannot afford on their own.Nichola Taylor, a leader with New Brunswick ACORN, says she'd like to see maximum heat laws in the summer to protect low- and middle-income people who are vulnerable to extreme indoor heat. (Submitted by ACORN Canada)Tenants want maximum heat lawsTo combat the effects of extreme indoor heat, ACORN is among those calling for provincial or municipal laws that would mandate maximum temperatures in apartments during the summer."In winter, there's bylaws across Canada in cities that the landlord can't let the temperature of the building get too cold," said Nichola Taylor, one of the leaders of New Brunswick ACORN. "We want to see the same thing implemented for summer for the extreme heat."Some municipalities, including Hamilton, Ont., and a suburb of Victoria, are considering bylaws requiring landlords ensure rental units don't exceed 26 C.Hutniak says he isn't opposed to the idea, but expresses that the lack of consultation with landlords from some municipalities is "disappointing.""We're all concerned about heat. It's a real issue. Absolutely," he said."We want to find solutions, but there has to be a recognition of the challenges, the costs and the balance in all of this."But Taylor stresses that many fellow tenants remain vulnerable to the heat today."Low- to moderate-income people simply cannot afford what we're living through at the moment, let alone [with] the landlords adding extra fees just because an air conditioning unit has been included," she said."It's just not right that people should have to go through that kind of discomfort."WATCH | CBC News tracks temperature and humidity inside Canadian homes: We installed sensors inside 50 homes without AC. Most levels were unsafe.Featured VideoIn a year of deadly heat waves, CBC News installed sensors to measure the heat and humidity inside 50 homes with little to no air conditioning over the summer to find out how hot they would get and explored the consequences of extreme indoor temperatures. Caught up with Blades in the Dark recently on twitch.tv/warpedlamp and it’s so freaking cool and the whole dark crime aesthetic is right up my edgy alley. The latest episode’s downtimes were both endearing and hysterical so I had to draw little snippets of them! What a crazy lovable gang they are.

Manchester United fail to win despite Martial's first goal in 10 months... 먹튀검증

Manchester United did not win even though Anthony Martial scored in the English Premier League (EPL) for the first time in about 10 months.
Manchester United drew 1-1 with Everton in the 7th round of the 2021-2022 English Premier League (EPL) held at Old Trafford, Manchester, England on the 2nd (Korean time). Martial and Andros Townsend scored one goal each.
The two teams, who were tied with 13 points, rose to 14 points side by side, beating Manchester City, Chelsea, and Brighton & Hove Albion (13 points), which have not played the 7th round yet, to rise to second and third place in the league. Manchester United are second in goal difference, three goals ahead, and Everton are third.
Home team Manchester United came out with a 4-2-3-1 formation. Edinson Cavani was placed at the top, while Martial, Bruno Fernandes and Mason Greenwood applied in the second line. Fred and Scott McTominay worked together in midfield. Luke Shaw, Victor Lindelof, Rafael Varane and Aaron Wansaka formed the back, while David De Gea held the goal.
Everton were in a 4-4-1-1 formation. He put Salomon Rondon at the forefront and Demerai Gray backed up. Anthony Gordon, Alan, Abdulaye Doukure and Townsend formed the midfield. The backs were Luca Digne, Michael Keane, Yeri Mina and Ben Godfrey, and the goalkeepers were Jordan Pickford.
At the beginning of the game, Manchester United maintained close to 70% of the game and seized a good opportunity first. In the 5th minute of the first half, Cavani took the ball with his back to the goal and passed it on to Wansaka, who joined the attack. Wanwansaka, who beat Dinho with his skill, entered the penalty box and posted a sharp cross, and Martial from the opposite post made a header. However, it did not go to the goal due to the wrong direction setting.
After 10 minutes of the first half, the away team Everton also started a counterattack. In the 15th minute of the first half, he got a chance for a free kick near the right touchline. Keane beat Shaw's check and headered Townsend's left-footed free kick, but the ball went over the side of the post.
In the 20th minute of the first half, Cavani's positioning was brilliant. Fred received the ball from a wide open position to the left and threw a cross into the penalty box. Cavani, who was standing near Keane, instantly caught the point of the fall and fell behind Keane. He managed to hit the head precisely without any checks, but the Pickford keeper threw himself away and kicked it off.
In the middle of the first half, Everton continued to threaten Manchester United's goal. In the 30th minute of the first half, Gordon, who received a pass from Digne, broke through the left and sent a ground cross to the door. Townsend rushed to the doorstep, but the Shaw stopped him. Two minutes later, Fernandes' forward pass was blocked by Dinho by throwing himself. After winning the ball, Gray used his speed to dribble past the two defenders and even attempted a mid-range shot. It was a shot on target, but De Gea struck it.
Manchester United took the lead in the 42nd minute. Fernandes, who received the ball to avoid Townsend's pressure, gave a through pass to Martial, who ran into the empty space to the left of the penalty box. Martial's precise shot flew past the two Everton defenders and over the head of the Pickford keeper into the net.
In the 12th minute of the second half, United made the first substitution. Instead of Cavani and Martial, Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho were added.
In the 20th minute of the second half Everton scored an equalizer with a quick counterattack. After United's corner kick, Gray fought off a fight with Fred and carried the ball forward. Doucure, who followed, received Gray's pass and passed it to Townsend, who infiltrated the other side, and Townsend aimed at the left corner of the post to finish.
Manchester United, who allowed the equalizer in the 25th minute of the second half, replaced Fred and replaced Paul Pogba. Two minutes later, Everton responded by dropping Gordon and replacing Tom Davis.
In the 29th minute of the second half, Sancho and Ronaldo, who were replaced, worked together. Ronaldo, who drove up the ball from the left side of the stadium, handed the ball to Sancho and entered the penalty box. Sancho, who caught the attention of the opposing defense, gave the ball back to Ronaldo, and Ronaldo opened it with a left-footed shot. The shot passed the front of the goal and went off to the other side.
Everton shook the net in the 39th minute of the second half, but the goal was soon canceled. Mina received Davis' ground pass and pushed it into the goal. However, as a result of video analysis (VAR), Mina's position was confirmed to be offside, and the judgment was corrected.
In the second half, Everton wasted time by dropping Gray and adding Louis Dovin. The match ended 1-1 with no further goals scored.

HONOLULU | Hurricane dumps rain on Hawaii, 5 rescued from flooded home

HONOLULU | Hurricane dumps rain on Hawaii, 5 rescued from flooded home
HONOLULU — Sirens wailed while workers piled sandbags in front of hotels and police blared warnings to tourists to leave the world-famous Waikiki Beach as Hurricane Lane barreled north after dumping nearly 2 feet (61 centimeters) of rain on Hawaii’s mostly rural Big Island.
Emergency crews rescued five California tourists from a home they were renting in Hilo after a nearby gulch overflowed and it flooded Thursday.
Suzanne Demerais said a tiny waterfall and small stream flowed near the home when she first arrived with four of her friends from the Los Angeles area. But the stream turned into a torrent and the river rose rapidly over 24 hours.
Hawaii County firefighters, who were in touch with the home’s owner, decided to evacuate the group before the water rose further.
They floated the five out on their backs, Demerais said.
“It was quite an experience because we weren’t planning to have a hurricane during our vacation time,” Demerais said.
Hurricane Lane, whose center was still offshore, lashed the Big Island with more than 30 inches (76 centimeters) of rain in about 24 hours. It had maximum sustained winds near 120 mph (193 kph), making it a Category 3 hurricane. A wind gust of 67 mph (107 kph) was recorded at Kohala Ranch on the northern side of the Big Island.
Forecasters said the center of the storm will move close to or over parts of Hawaii’s main islands late Friday, bringing dangerous surf of 20 feet (6 meters).
About 200 miles (320 kilometers) north of Hilo, on the state’s most populated island of Oahu, employees of the Sheraton Waikiki resort filled sandbags to protect the oceanfront hotel from surging surf.
Stores along Waikiki’s glitzy Kalakaua Avenue stacked sandbags along the bottom of their glass windows to prepare for heavy rain and flash flooding.
Police on loudspeakers told surfers and swimmers to get out of the water, saying the beach would be closed until further notice.
The Marriott Resort Waikiki Beach in Honolulu designated a ballroom on the third floor as a shelter for guests and began removing lounge chairs from around the pool and bar area.
At the Hilton Hawaiian Village, guest Elisabeth Brinson said hotel staff left a notice that the rooms will still have water and phone service, and a backup generator would power one elevator per building in the event of a power outage.
Brinson, a native of the United Kingdom now living in Denver, said many shops were closed, and those still open were frantic with people buying food, beer and water to take back to their rooms.
“We knew it was coming, so I tried to just cram as much as I could into the last few days in anticipation so we could cross things off of our list,” said Brinson, who is used to hurricanes after living in Florida.
Lane was not projected to make a direct hit on the islands, but officials warned that even a lesser blow could do significant harm.
Some areas could see up to 30 inches (about 80 centimeters) of rain.
United Airlines canceled its Friday flights to and from Maui. The airline added two additional flights from Honolulu to San Francisco on Thursday to help transport people off the islands.
Hawaiian Airlines canceled all Friday flights by its commuter carrier, Ohana by Hawaiian.
Hawaii’s biggest hotels are confident they can keep their guests safe as long as they stay inside, said Mufi Hannemann, CEO of Hawaii Tourism and Lodging Association.
“The only concern is those that venture outside of the properties, that would like to hike on a day like this or who would like to still go into the ocean and see what it’s like to take a swim or surf in these kind of waters,” Hannemann said.
Honolulu shopping malls and office buildings closed early on Thursday and planned to shut their doors Friday.
Shelters were open throughout the islands, with 350 people staying in them in Oahu. Aid agencies were also working to help Hawaii’s sizable homeless population, many of whom live near beaches and streams that could flood.
Because there’s not enough shelter space statewide, Hawaii Emergency Management Agency Administrator Tom Travis urged people who were not in flood zones to stay home.
The National Weather Service downgraded the Big Island to a tropical storm warning, meaning it expects sustained winds of 39 mph (62 kph) to 73 mph (117 kph) on the island instead of stronger hurricane force winds.
But a hurricane warning remains in effect for Oahu and Maui County.
The central Pacific gets fewer hurricanes than other regions, with about only four or five named storms a year. Hawaii rarely gets hit.
The last major storm to hit was Iniki in 1992. Others have come close in recent years.
Because people in Hawaii are confined to the islands, they have to make sure they have enough supplies to outlast power outages and other potential emergencies.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency moved several barges packed with food, water, generators and other supplies into the region ahead of Hurricane Hector, which skirted past the islands more than a week ago, FEMA Administrator Brock Long said. ___ Associated Press writers Brian Skoloff and Caleb Jones in Honolulu, Mark Thiessen and Dan Joling in Anchorage, Alaska, Seth Borenstein in Washington and Annika Wolters in Phoenix contributed to this report.

Hiiii ;w; May I ask? ൠ - random headcanon for WhatWeDeserve!Graves, and ♦ - quirks/hobbies headcanon for the Credence of the same verse
Of course!
(Want to ask your own? Go here!)
ൠ - random headcanon for WhatWeDeserve!Graves
Graves played Quidditch in Ilvermorny, but wasn’t very good at it. For his first two years, he was a backup Chaser and only got a chance to play in his third year when Samuel Pratt came down with the stomach flu. Both in the game and during practice, he had the same problem: target fixation. At some point, he would lose track of the Beaters and get clobbered with a Bludger.
(Interestingly enough, the Wampus captain at the time, a dour-mouthed senior named Maria Demerais, used to tell her teammates “You don’t get to make mistakes” whenever they gave her excuses. Wonder where Graves got that phrase from?)
He stopped playing his fifth year; his grades had dropped and he was far enough behind in Potions that he couldn’t spare the practice time. He still likes to fly, though not in New York. You really have to be top-notch with your Disillusionment Charms to fly in New York City without being noticed and the last thing Graves wants is the New York Wailer publishing a screaming headline about the Director’s violations of the International Statute of Security.
He keeps his broom at the Graves family’s ancestral manor at the base of Samuel’s Point. He’ll go out there sometimes, though not as often as he’d like and take the broom out over the mountains and the forests. He goes high enough that the air starts to thin and you can see for miles and sits and waits as the sky goes dark and the stars come out.
♦ - quirks/hobbies headcanon for the Credence of the same verse
Credence has always liked to walk. As a child under Mary Lou’s control, it was one of his few moments of freedom. Well, relative freedom. As long as he handed out all of the leaflets, was back by dinner, didn’t lose anything or dirty any of his clothes, spoke to no one and stayed out of Chinatown, he could go where he liked.
As an adult, he can lose himself in a city. He doesn’t even need a disillusionment charm. He keeps his eyes down and moves with the crowd. He buys things for Modesty sometimes; small trinkets at flea markets, sweets from candy shops with glittering displays that she could eat and discard the wrappers of when Ma wasn’t looking. He buys books sometimes too, though he never keeps them after he finishes them.
(Rilke’s New Poems is the sole exception. He read the “The Panther” and it shook him to his core. He wanted to burn the book, get rid of the sudden claustrophobia and despair that came over him, but he couldn’t. The book sits in his coat pocket. He hasn’t opened it since.)
The first time Bartholomew found out, the man tossed aside and shrugged. “Do what you like as long as you kill when I ask. We’re forsworn, lad. You can’t get any more damned.”
It is Bartholomew’s response to many things— from books to pork buns to the time he caught Credence’s gaze tracking a beautiful man with sepia skin and a laugh that fizzed like champagne across Locust Street in Philadelphia.
“You can’t get any more damned, lad.”
