#SwiftTok had a rough day. Early Thursday, after Universal Music Group and TikTok failed to reach an agreement on licensing music from UMG artists on the app, sounds from those artists—including Taylor Swift, Drake, and others—went silent.

“Some of my most viewed videos are ones talking about Taylor Swift that have Taylor Swift songs in the background,” says Savannah Delullo, a Wordle influencer on TikTok and a Swiftie. “So, them being muted is pretty sad, because we put in all of that work.”

Delullo notes that creators might switch over to alternative versions of the official songs or experiment with ways to avoid copyrighted music altogether, but still the mood on #SwiftTok is far from light.

“Half my drafts are muted now,” says Madeline Macrae, a Swift fan and TikTok creator. While initially frustrated by the change, Macrae thinks there might be positive impacts. Even though many ardent fans value the online community built through social media, some are also uncomfortable with the flattening of poetic songs into 60-second memes. “Songs that Swifties would usually gatekeep aren't going to be TikTok-ified now,” she says.

It’s not just Swifties who are missing music on TikTok. Multiple videos posted on Olivia Rodrigo’s official account, including one with over 50 million views, are now quiet. Similarly, TikToks with UMG licensed music posted by Billie Eilish to promote her album display the message “This sound isn’t available.”

During recent years, UMG and other labels have built marketing strategies around getting songs to go viral with the TikTok algorithm. Younger users see the platform as a great way to discover their next favorite song and build out cool playlists. If TikTok and UMG don’t reach a new deal soon, the prohibition could dramatically alter how artists tease new music and connect with fans through social media.

In an email to WIRED, Barney Hooper, a global head of music communications at TikTok, indicated that the change impacts only music from UMG and confirmed that videos with previously licensed music will stay muted until another deal is closed. Soon, TikTok might also take steps to remove songs in the Universal Music Publishing Group catalog, which would increase the number of impacted artists.

So, licensed music from UMG artists is gone from TikTok, for now, but it remains unclear what will happen to unofficial remixes and mashups as the catalog is wiped from the platform. Viral sounds on TikTok are sometimes warped versions of an original song, with vocals frequently sped up, and while some of those sounds remained on the platform Thursday, they may not for much longer.

A well-known musician for almost two decades, Swift has seen her popularity skyrocket in recent years. Her Eras Tour is so massive it has the power to impact local economies and her appearances at NFL games to watch her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, play have altered football viewership this season. Losing her music as well as tunes from Drake and others in UMG’s lineup could alter the fabric of TikTok itself.

Swift’s songs may no longer be all over the platform, but music remains core to the user experience of scrolling through TikTok. The cascade of snippets from huge artists disappearing could even usher in a new era on the For You Page feed. “I feel like a silver lining to this is that smaller or independent artists can have their chance to go viral,” says Macrae.

The benefits entailed in a membership at a student association

In 2016, student associations were repeatedly mentioned negatively in the news. In particular, the reputation of G.S.C. Vindicat, full the Groninger Studenten Corps Vindicat atque Polit, was harmed. At the beginning of the current academic year a news item was published about the so-called ‘banga list’. Due to these kinds of messages student associations have been given a bad image. But what exactly are the benefits of membership? Through this blog I would like to tell you something about the student life and all the benefits that it entails.

Student associations in a bad light A news-site in Groningen, called Sikkom, received an anonymous message containing a strange file with concerning content about 22 female members of G.S.C. Vindicat. The file, intended to spread among the male members of the association, consisted of photographs, phone numbers and student houses of the female members. All the girls were given a ranking from one to four stars. The list, which resembled a notorious ‘banga list’ was spread by strangers on the Internet.

The University of Groningen (RUG), Hanze University Groningen and student association Vindicat wrote in a message on their website that they distance themselves from the recent events at the student union. Internal measures were taken and the creators of the list were suspended.

However, it did not stop there. There was a lot of commotion in media and the student associations had their compatriots angered. Heated discussions on the Internet, on television and within the student life itself followed. In less than a month a second incident took place at Vindicat which was not very fortunate for them. An apprentice member of G.S.C. Vindicat had been addressed so roughly during the hazing that he was hospitalized with head injuries. There are similar reports about hazing in Amsterdam, by the Amsterdamsch Studenten Corps (ASC).

Many people got a negative image of the associations. Hazing was not / is not humane. Why would you want to throw your life away with a membership? In popular view, there are only disadvantages.

I understand their thoughts. Negative news spreads quickly and a negative image or negative reputation is the result. I don’t agree at all with what happened during the hazing, but there certainly is another side to the story. The image the media creates of the student life is negative and the positive side of this life is not named in the articles.

My experience with student life I am going to take you on a journey through my experiences as a student. Through this blog, I would like to point out all the benefits that are entailed in a membership. The student life consists of more than drinking beer in the clubhouse in the hours that you don’t study. Not everything is about the hazing and tasks for freshman students. You learn a lot within the four walls of a clubhouse. You make new social contacts with whom you will enjoy the rest of your life and norms and values are important. The benefits of student life and student associations should be mentioned more.

When I was 17 years old, I made the first contact with student life. While I was doing intermediate vocational education, my friends from high school started their studies at colleges or universities. Because of this I was regularly found in the infamous student cities of the Netherlands. I went to parties, took my first steps in student houses and became acquainted with all the odd manners of student culture. I thought it was all really weird, but I think this was mainly because I was not part of it at that time. I liked to have a beer with them or to go to a party in the clubhouse, but to be a member of an association? No, that was not for me. No way.

I was really looking forward to start at the University of Applied Science and was actually truly curious about student life. I assumed that it was not for me. But when the summer approached I became more curious. Leiden, a real student city. Should I be a member of a student association? What are the activities for students in Leiden anyway? And are the associations also approachable for students from the University of Applied Science? There was only one way to find out. I had to experience the orientation week for new students in Leiden, the EL CID. A week in which you get to know the city and the college or university but where you also become acquainted with student life and all the associations that Leiden has to offer. As I travelled to Leiden, my only thoughts were that students were strange. And how did they all manage to study and be a member of a student association? I was dying to find out.

I've had a great week and I fell in love with the city and student life. How could people not love this life? Such nice people, amazing parties and activities for all kinds of people with different personalities. Students associations, sports clubs and even a club where they play board games.

I didn’t become a member of a student association that week. At that moment I thought I couldn’t combine a busy membership with my study. However, I have signed up to be a member of a student orchestra called S.M.G. Sempre Crescendo, the oldest subdivision of L.S.V. Minerva, full the Leidse Studenten Vereniging 'Minerva'. An orchestra where the members rehearse with a beer next to their music stand and the weekly get-togethers last until the early morning hours. There are unwritten rules, the so-called ‘mores’. You quickly manage to remember those during your membership. At the beginning, I thought all the rules were quite crazy, but as we speak I am completely entangled in the strange subculture.

I still enjoy the rehearsals every week with great pleasure, also the subsequent get-together. I’m even often found at the clubhouse on other days during the week as well and I’ve joined several committees. I have also lived in a student house, with roommates who are members at the other major student associations of Leiden, which makes me visit the other student associations regularly. There are a lot of things outsiders don’t know about the student life and that’s why I also think that the positive side of a membership needs to be highlighted.

The wrong impression Not only the previously mentioned news reports have drawn a false picture of what happens in the lives of students. Also in the television series ‘Feuten’ is greatly exaggerated. Many students were not pleased with the production of the series produced by the youth broadcasting BNN. The scene from the film ‘Soldaat van Oranje’ is also cited during a discussion.

All very entertaining, but the 'regular Dutchman' now thinks we're a bunch of disordered people without decency and respect for each other during hazing and other activities with freshman students. We students are more than that. The positive side of student life should be highlighted more and this blog will hopefully give more information about what is really going on in the life of an active member of a student association and what benefits the membership entails.

The benefits of a membership at a student association Being a member of a student association involves more than living in a student house, drinking lots and lots of beers and wearing a nice suit or dress during daily activities. There are many benefits to mention.

First of all, it’s much fun to join an association. You should be able to relax when you’re not studying and the associations provide that opportunity. Convivial evenings at the club, many activities and trips in which you can participate and there are almost always events to go to. Your social life unfolds in full speed!

You get to know new people very quickly and your network will be expanded significantly in a short time. Increasing your network can be very beneficial for the rest of your life - and it also brings you lifelong friendships. Especially if you are new to a city, it is not only nice to make friends quickly or even find a room with the help of your connections but also after finishing your study a large network is convenient. For example in finding a job.

During a job interview, your membership can also work to your advantage. More and more companies are looking at how much experience you have gained during your studies with extracurricular activities instead of only looking at your study program. The fact that you can combine your study with a membership and extracurricular activities says a lot about your personality and motivation. According to research by TNS NIPO on behalf of the Volkskrant, over two thirds of the most influential people in the Netherlands have been members of a student association.

Secondly, you can develop tremendously. You can join committees within the association and, for example, organize parties, manage the bar, write for the almanac or even provide some more politically oriented activities. If you are really ambitious, then perhaps a place within the board could be something for you. You can develop skills that you would not normally think of, you expand knowledge and gain new experiences which helps you to unfold and enriches your career.

Several studies show that members of student associations or students who have lived in student houses often achieve better academic results than non-members. The people around them will always stimulate them to study properly. The students study together, they encourage each others and good results will be rewarded at the student associations, for example by offering you to join committees.

It is also remarkable that many associations engage in a collaboration with the municipality. For instance, A.L.S.V. Quintus from Leiden organizes an annual event called ‘The Museum Night’ and is engaged in developing a plan to solve the bicycle and litter problem which the city is facing at the moment. There is regular consultation between associations and municipalities in all major student cities and this brings advantages to both parties.

What is also important to point out, is that not all members are preppy and typical frats. There are lots of student associations in the Netherlands, in all kinds of forms, which you can join. In Leiden alone there are more than 20 different associations. Take a look at the associations which you are interested in and don’t be afraid of hazing or tough first year. Remember that you are not alone. Lots of new students are all sitting in the same boat. Hold on a bit longer. It's all worth it. The benefits are for the rest of your life. All benefits I’ve just mentioned. Keep that in mind.

Basically, when you join a student association, your student life will be an experience you will never forget, accompanied with a lot of benefits in the future. 

Your college years are the best time of your life. It is therefore important that you fully enjoy it. Be aware of all the parodies that have been made about the student life and just laugh at it. When you’re a member of a student association, you know better. It is quite okay to laugh, which I would certainly recommend. De voordelen die een lidmaatschap bij een studentenvereniging met zich meebrengt

In 2016 kwamen studentenverenigingen regelmatig negatief in het nieuws. Met name de reputatie van G.S.C. Vindicat, voluit Groninger Studenten Corps Vindicat atque Polit, werd geschaad. Aan het begin van het huidige collegejaar verscheen er een bericht in de media over een zogeheten ‘bangalijst’. Door dit soort berichten hebben studentenverenigingen een slecht imago gekregen. Maar wat zijn nu eigenlijk de voordelen van een lidmaatschap? Ik wil jullie meenemen in het studentenleven en al het moois dat het met zich meebrengt.

Studentenverenigingen in een kwaad daglicht Het Groningse stadsblog Sikkom kreeg een anoniem bericht met daarin een bestand met informatie over 22 vrouwelijke leden. Het boekwerkje, bedoeld om onder de mannelijke leden van de vereniging te verspreiden, bestaat uit foto’s, telefoonnummers en studentenhuizen van de 22 studentes. Alle meisjes kregen een ranking variërend van één tot vier sterren. De lijst, die veel wegheeft van een zogenoemde en beruchte bangalijst (banga is straattaal voor slet), is door onbekenden op internet gezet.

De Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (RUG), de Hanzehogeschool Groningen en studentenvereniging Vindicat namen afstand van de recente gebeurtenissen bij de studentenvereniging, schreven zij in een bericht op hun website. Maatregelen werden genomen en de makers van de lijst werden geschorst. Hier hield het echter niet mee op. Er was veel ophef in het land en de studentenverenigingen hadden hun landgenoten in het harnas gejaagd. Hevige discussies op het internet, op televisie en binnen in het studentenleven zelf volgden, maar bleef het niet bij. Nog geen maand later volgde het tweede incident waarmee Vindicat zichzelf niet in een goed daglicht plaatste. Een aspirant-lid van de Groningse studentenvereniging Vindicat werd tijdens de kennismakingstijd zo hardhandig aangepakt dat hij met hoofdletsel werd opgenomen in het ziekenhuis. Ook bij het Amsterdamsch Studenten Corps (ASC) ging het mis tijdens de ontgroeningen.

Onbegrip De Nederlandse bevolking keerde zich echter tegen het studentenleven en veel mensen begrepen niet waarom je in godsnaam lid zou willen worden van zo’n club. Veel mensen kregen door de nieuwsberichten een negatief beeld van de verenigingen. Ontgroeningen waren volgens hen niet menselijk en je gooit je leven weg met een lidmaatschap. Er zaten alleen maar nadelen aan en waarom zou je je laten kleineren om bij een bepaalde groep te willen horen?

Dit zijn natuurlijk helemaal geen rare gedachten. Negatief nieuws verspreid zich snel en een negatief beeld of negatieve reputatie is hier het resultaat van. Ik praat zeker niet goed wat er gebeurd is tijdens de ontgroeningen aan het begin van dit collegejaar, maar er zit zeker een andere kant aan het verhaal. Het beeld wat de media schept van het studentenleven is negatief en de positieve zijde van dit leven wordt niet benoemd in de artikelen.

Mijn ervaring met het studentenleven Ik ga jullie meenemen in mijn reis door het studentenleven en wil door middel van dit blog jullie wijzen op de voordelen die een lidmaatschap met zich meebrengt. Het leven van een student bestaat namelijk uit veel meer dan bier drinken op de sociëteit in de uren dat je niet aan je studie zit. Niet alles draait om ontgroeningen, taken voor eerstejaars leden en het voor schut zetten van jongerejaars. Je leert ontzettend veel binnen de vier muren van een vereniging, maakt nieuwe sociale contacten waar je nog je hele leven plezier van hebt en normen en waarden staan hoog in het vaandel. De voordelen van het studentenleven en de studentenverenigingen moeten ook maar eens genoemd worden.

Toen ik 17 jaar oud was, kwam ik voor het eerst in aanraking met het studentenleven. Ik zat dan weliswaar op het mbo, maar mijn vrienden en vriendinnen van de middelbare school begonnen destijds allemaal netjes en zoals het hoort met hun studie op hogescholen of universiteiten. Hierdoor was ik regelmatig te vinden in de bekende studentensteden van westen van Nederland.

Ik ging mee naar feestjes, zette mijn eerste stapjes in studentenhuizen en maakte kennis met alle vreemde regels binnen de studentencultuur. Ik wist niet wat me overkwam. Het was een gekke wereld waar je echt je plek in moet vinden voordat je je echt thuis voelt. Ik vond het allemaal maar raar, maar dat kwam denk ik vooral doordat ik er niet middenin zat. Ik vond het leuk om een biertje mee te drinken of om een dansje te wagen op de sociëteit tijdens een open feest, maar lid worden van een vereniging? Nee, ik zag mezelf niet wekelijks staan op een borrel. Echt niet.

Op ontdekkingstocht tijdens de introductieweek Uiteindelijk ben ik toch gaan studeren in Leiden. Communicatie aan de hogeschool, dat werd hem! Ik had er heel veel zin in en was ook eigenlijk wel benieuwd naar het studentenleven. Ik ging er eigenlijk vanuit dat het niets voor mij was. Toen werd het zomer en de kriebels kwamen langzaam in mijn buik. Leiden, een echte studentenstad. Moest ik hier niet iets mee doen? Wat was er überhaupt allemaal te beleven? En is dat ook wel leuk als je een hbo-studie doet of is het studentenleven echt iets voor universitaire studenten? Er was maar één manier om dit te ontdekken en dat was het meemaken van de introductieweek voor nieuwe studenten in Leiden, de EL CID. Een week waarin je de stad en de hogeschool of universiteit leert kennen, maar waarin je ook kennismaakt met het studentenleven en alle verenigingen die Leiden te bieden heeft. Voordat ik met mijn koffer naar Leiden afreisde had ik ook veel vooroordelen. Studenten waren maar vreemd en dat studentenleven kostte toch ontzettend veel tijd? Hoe deed iedereen dat toch?

Ik heb een geweldige week gehad en ik werd verliefd op de stad en het studentenleven. Hoe kon je hier nou niet van houden? Allemaal leuke mensen, leuke feestjes en activiteiten en eigenlijk voor ieder wat wils. Gezelligheidsverenigingen, sportverenigingen en zelfs een vereniging waar ze bordspellen spelen. Ik ben die week trouwens niet lid geworden van een gezelligheidsvereniging. Ik vond het toch wat vreemd en ik durfde het niet te combineren met mijn studie. Echter, ik werd wel lid bij een studentenorkest genaamd S.M.G. Sempre Crescendo, de oudste subvereniging van L.S.V. Minerva, voluit De Leidse Studenten Vereniging ‘Minerva’. Een orkest waar men repeteert met een biertje in de hand en waarbij de borrels tot in de vroege uurtjes doorgaan. Er gelden ongeschreven regels, de mores, en hier houd je je ook aan. Je maakt snel genoeg kennis hiermee. Best wel gek, dacht ik aan het begin, maar ondertussen ben ik helemaal verstrengeld in het vreemde gezelschap.

Ik ga nog iedere week met veel plezier naar de repetitie met aansluitende borrel en ben ook vaak op andere dagen doordeweeks te vinden op de sociëteit van Minerva. Daarnaast woon ik in een studentenhuis met huisgenootjes die lid zijn bij de andere grote verenigingen van Leiden. Zo kom ik met regelmaat op de andere sociëteiten en krijg ik van alles een beetje mee. Vandaar dat ik ook vind dat men de positieve kant moet leren kennen van het lidmaatschap.

Een verkeerd beeld Niet alleen de eerder genoemde nieuwsberichten hebben een verkeerd beeld geschept van wat er allemaal gebeurd in het leven van studenten. Ook in de televisieserie Feuten wordt enorm overdreven. Veel studenten waren het ook niet eens met hoe BNN de productie van de serie heeft aangepakt. Ook de scene uit de film Soldaat van Oranje wordt nog wel eens aangehaald tijdens een discussie.

Allemaal heel vermakelijk, maar de ‘normale Nederlander’ denkt nu wel dat we een stelletje ongeregeld zijn zonder fatsoen en respect dat elkaar maar een beetje kapot maakt tijdens de ontgroening. Wij studenten zijn meer dan dat. De positieve kant van het studentenleven moet weer aan het licht komen en deze blog geeft hopelijk meer informatie over hoe het er nu echt aan toe gaat in het leven van een actief lid en welke voordelen het met zich mee brengt om lid te zijn van een studentenvereniging.

De voordelen van een lidmaatschap Lid zijn bij een studentenvereniging of wonen in een studentenhuis is meer dan bier drinken en het dragen van een pak of een net jurkje. Er zijn veel voordelen te noemen.

Ten eerste is het natuurlijk heel leuk om lid te zijn bij een studentenvereniging. Je moet kunnen ontspannen buiten de collegebanken om. Gezellige avonden op de sociëteit, veel activiteiten en reizen waar je deel aan kunt nemen en er zijn vrijwel altijd evenementen. Je sociale leven ontplooit zich in sneltreinvaart!

Je leert heel snel nieuwe mensen kennen waardoor je netwerk in korte tijd flink uitgebreid wordt. Het vergroten van je netwerk kan zijn vruchten afwerpen in je verdere leven, maar je houdt er ook levenslange vriendschappen aan over. Zeker als je nieuw bent in een stad is het fijn dat je vrienden maakt of dat je sneller een kamer kan vinden door je connecties, maar ook straks wanneer je aan het werk gaat is een groot netwerk handig. Bijvoorbeeld bij het vinden van een baan.

Tijdens een sollicitatiegesprek kan je lidmaatschap ook in je voordeel werken. Steeds meer bedrijven kijken ook naar hoeveel ervaring jij tijdens je studie hebt opgedaan met nevenactiviteiten. Dat je je studie kunt combineren met een vereniging zegt namelijk ook veel over je persoonlijkheid en je motivatie. Ruim tweederde van invloedrijk Nederland is lid geweest van het corps of een andere studentenvereniging. Nog steeds, zo blijkt uit onderzoek van TNS NIPO in opdracht van de Volkskrant.  

Ten tweede kun je jezelf enorm ontwikkelen. Je kunt binnen de vereniging in commissies gaan en bijvoorbeeld feesten organiseren, de bar beheren, schrijven voor de Almanak of zelfs wat meer politiekgerichte activiteiten verzorgen. Mocht je echt ambitieus zijn en iets willen betekenen voor de vereniging, dan is wellicht een plekje binnen het bestuur wel iets voor jou. Je kunt vaardigheden ontwikkelen waar je normaal niet aan zou denken, je kennis uitbreiden en nieuwe ervaringen opdoen waarmee je jezelf ontplooit en je carrière verrijkt.

Uit verschillende onderzoeken blijkt ook dat leden van studentenverenigingen of studenten die wonen in een studentenhuis vaak betere studieresultaten halen dan niet-leden. Verenigingen of huisgenoten stimuleren je studie vaak juist. Samen studeren, elkaar als huis- of clubgenoten aanmoedigen om goed te presteren of op de vereniging beloond worden als je goede resultaten haalt.

Ook werken veel verenigingen samen met de gemeente. Zo organiseert A.L.S.V. Quintus uit Leiden de Museumnacht in Leiden en werkt de vereniging samen met de gemeente aan een oplossing voor het fietsenprobleem en zwerfafval. Er is met regelmaat overleg tussen verenigingen en gemeenten in alle grote studentensteden en dit brengt voor beide partijen voordelen met zich mee.

Wat ook belangrijk is om te benoemen, is dat niet alle studentenverenigingen bestaan uit ballen of kakkers. Er zijn ontzettend veel verenigingen in Nederland waar je terecht kunt. Er is eigenlijk voor iedereen wat. Alleen in Leiden zijn er al ruim 20 verschillende verenigingen waar je je bij kunt aansluiten. Ga kijken bij de vereniging waar jij interesse in hebt en je merkt snel genoeg of er een klik is. Wees niet bang voor een ontgroening of een zwaar eerste jaar. Uiteindelijk valt het allemaal wel mee en vergeet niet dat je niet alleen bent. Samen met jouw jaargenoten of lichtingsgenoten sleep je je er wel doorheen. Even doorbijten. Het is het allemaal waard. Je hebt je hele leven er nog profijt van. Kijk maar naar alle voordelen die ik zojuist genoemd heb.

Kortom, als je lid wordt, is je studententijd sowieso een ervaring die je nooit meer vergeet. Natuurlijk kun je alle parodieën ook met een korreltje zout nemen als je zelf weet dat het er in het echte studentenleven toch net even iets anders aan toe gaat.
