fixating on one fairly irrelevant scene here, but I'm still fascinated by how at the burial scene tozer's whole thing is 'welp he's not getting any deader, let's dick around with the caulker's mate and the ship's boy even though they've just seen the lid of their buddy's coffin pop off like some kind of grisly jack-in-the-box, i'm definitely the big dog in this fun little group here, faffing around with the coffin means literally nothing because david young's already dead' and yet...he still takes the time to symbolically throw the first handful of rock dirt onto the coffin and doing the sign of the cross?? like he's being a very careless ass all the way through that scene, he says outright that david young's death rituals (ie fixing the coffin lid) do not matter, and yet he still participates in them. something about saying you don't care and then showing that you do. I am Entranced.

Still thinking about Fitzjames and Gore and envy today, and there's one incredibly simple wee throwaway line from the script that's driving me wild with all the heavy lifting it's doing -

"Fitzjames sees: One of Gore's cuffs is smudged with grease."

It's from the scene where Gore is making his report to Franklin on Erebus' bent rudder. We don't even really see it realised on screen but, by God, doesn't it just say so much?

On the one hand, it's clear that Fitzjames is envious of Gore.

In Fitzjames' mind, Gore is the very picture of Victorian manhood and nobility. He's everything that Fitzjames wishes he himself was, everything he feels he's only pretending and, often, feels he's failing to be. And Gore, seemingly, doesn't even have to try! So in a way it makes sense to me that Fitzjames might zero in on any perceived imperfection, even just as a comfort to himself.

But on the other hand, another far more charitable and, I think, more accurate reading of that wee line is essentially 'real recognising real'.

Fitzjames, whether he always realises it himself or not, is an excellent leader - particularly at an interpersonal level - and an eminently practical one too. He's all about getting shit done and he isn't afraid to get his hands dirty in the process. So it also makes sense to me that he would take notice of Gore having done the same - having cracked on and gotten done the job of checking Erebus 'at the knees', having gotten his own hands dirty.

I don't think I'm articulating any of this very well yet but all the layers of that relationship - loving and respecting a man as your friend, seeing yourself in him but also wanting to be him and being unspeakably envious of everything he is and everything he has, even while he loves and respects you back and looks up to you as his friend and superior officer...?

There's just so much there and every bit of it is delicious!

Anyway I might be reading too much into it but I can’t stop thinking about the bathroom signs in the airport flipping and I think Stephen is transgender (or Thomas, it’s…unclear who the .pk3 is supposed to portray as. Maybe that’s why it’s S+A) There’s something to be said for. Walking into a womens restroom covered in blood with an empty pill bottle and leaving a mens restroom with a full pill bottle. It’s already a queer story anyway so it’s not outside the realm of plausibility

When naming the members of the Théâtre des Vampires, Armand introduces Louis and Claudia to their “playwright in residence”, one Samuel Barclay (“Sam. Call me Sam.”). This is almost certainly a reference to Samuel Barclay Beckett, the famous modernist writer, theatre director and playwright. The style of theatre that Beckett was instrumental in creating, the so-called Theatre of the Absurd, with its focus on existentialism and tragicomic tones, shares some notable characteristics with the plays shown at the Théâtre des Vampires; Louis’ complaint that “They were weird! And always ended in death or some kind of cruel, barely motivated violence.” feels affectionately pointed. Beckett’s most famous work, Waiting for Godot, has also been confirmed by a reviewer to appear in the show (“Santiago fuming about the lack of action in a vampiric version of Waiting for Godot”). The choice of name and the inclusion of a play that was written during this period of Louis and Armand’s lives (“The Paris Albums, 1946-1949.”) but did not premiere until 1953, could suggest that Sam is meant to be the man himself. 

This is not the first time the show has played with the idea that a famous writer may have been a vampire, however, unlike Emily Dickinson, Beckett was alive and working in Paris until his death in 1989. Considering the ending of the show’s source material, it seems unlikely that Sam will live that long unless he independently parts ways with the Théâtre des Vampires. It is also notable that, if intended to be a cameo, Sam has been quite underplayed compared to historical figures like Jelly Roll Morton and Jean-Paul Sartre. Though the supposed playwright for the company, Sam is shown selling tickets for the performance and collecting laundry rather than, say, giving notes on that night’s performance. Sam is presented as apart from the other members of the coven; absent during their prank on Louis and Claudia, not joining in the ensuing greetings, and leaving during the introductions. This framing of the character suggests that he is therefore not intended to be the real Beckett. Perhaps then the name was chosen by Sam himself in an attempt to emulate a writer he admires. Perhaps it is meant to further emphasise the strangeness of the supposed playwright for the company having the least interaction with its members, while only being shown to perform menial tasks. Or perhaps this is simply a reference made by a team of writers with backgrounds in theatre.

the script differences in sonic games between the japanese and english releases are so fascinating btw like, bc the series has both a ton of influence from american culture and american developers while also being from and taking inspiration from japanese culture and japanese developers and one big way that shows up is that the games receive quite a lot of localisation- and that includes the scripts that were written in english and then localised to japan, bc again there have been sonic games being made in america and including american staff members as far back as literally sonic 2. like, for example, how sonic's rebellious free spirited personality is conveyed. in english scripts, sonic is more energetic, snarky, and hyper, while in japanese sonic's a lot more mellow and aloof in comparison. they’re both fundamentally the same character like they do the same things the plots are the same and have been since adventure but the way that characterisation is conveyed depends a lot on cultural ideas of coolness and stuff. that's genuinely really cool to see!

Hi there! I'm not sure if you've answered this before but out of curiosity what's your overall view of Succession season 4? I've been thinking about this a lot lately and while I enjoyed it while it aired I think I've come around to the idea that there are some issues (at least for me) with the pacing and with the season feeling less connected in some ways to the prior 3 seasons if that makes any sense. Relatedly, do you have a preference order for seasons? I've been showing it to a friend and I think there's something of a tone/shape/something difference between the earlier and later two seasons but I'm still thinking through that one.

Hey! That's a really interesting question. I do love s4, but it's definitely a season that I've re-watched less than the seasons that came before it? I think a lot of that is due to the bleakness of the ending (although, of course, it was always ultimately telegraphed as a tragedy), but I do think there are arguments to be made that it didn't necessarily keep its balance as well as the earlier seasons did.

Honestly, I think a huge part of that was that the show lost its centre of gravity when Logan died. That's not to say that I didn't think it was important that he did pass, or that the effect the loss of him had on not just his children, but everyone in his orbit, was the point - Shiv pretty much says that outright during the eulogy when she calls him her dear world of a father - but it absolutely shifts the dynamics of the show and I think filling that void with new characters (i.e. Matsson) doesn't entirely work in a final season when we know there's a finite time with characters we're more attached to.

I think you feel that in how much characters like Gerri, Marcia, Caroline and even existing antagonists like Sandy, Sandi and Laurence weren't so much in the backseat as they were the rearview for the season. It feels true to how the industry / the world works, but narratively it's unsatisfying and to see beloved and/or compelling characters fall away with little send-off is inevitably frustrating, even when it does make sense in the context of the story that's being told.

In that sense, I'd say that I loved the season overall, that I think it stuck the landing for the series, and that it absolutely had some of my favourite episodes of the entire show in it, but it's not my favourite of the show's run and I think the destabilising effect of it would've perhaps felt better served if it wasn't the final season of the show.

And as for ranking the seasons! That's so hard! But mmmmm, okay, I think I'd probably say:
