21 cases of Covid-19 subvariant JN. 1 detected in India, authorities on high alert
With the fresh cases of coronavirus subvariant JN.1 emerging in India, Indian authorities have been on high alert. The subvariant JN. 1 is being investigated by the scientific community as the authorities work on curbing its spread already. As per NITI Aayog member (health) Dr V K Paul, as of now, 21 cases of COVID-19 JN.1 sub-variant have been detected in the country. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is focused on the genome sequencing of the variant.
Out of the 21 cases, 19 cases have been detected in Goa while Kerala and Maharashtra have recorded one each.
First found in late 2023, the JN.1 (BA.2.86.1.1) variant of COVID-19 is a descendant of the BA.2.86 lineage (Pirola) of SARS-CoV-2. The BA.2.86 lineage (Pirola) first emerged in August 2023 and showed more than 30 mutations in the spike (5) protein unlike the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron XBB lineages. The mutations make the variant highly risky with a high potential for immune evasion.
The JN.1 subvariant has been classified as a variant of interest by the World Health Organization.
Head of Pulmonary Medicine at Safdarjung Hospital, Dr. Rohit Kumar said, “COVID is an RNA virus that changes its form from time to time, and new variants of it emerge. And now a new variant has emerged, which has been named JN.1. However, not a single case has come to light in the capital, Delhi yet.”
"We are on alert, keeping an eye on the Corona cases. Testing of patients is also being done, and the patients who are coming positive are also being sent for genome sequencing. So that new variants can also be detected, but till now no case of new variants has been reported in Delhi," Dr Kumar said.
"If there is a sore throat, cough, cold, chest pain, or difficulty breathing, consult the doctor immediately. Especially those already suffering from respiratory diseases and asthma patients need to take special care. The doctor mentioned that during this season, individuals with serious diseases should be more careful, as those dying due to Covid often have pre-existing serious conditions such as heart disease and diabetes," he added.

COVID INDIA EMERGENCY
So my blog is now flood with posts about covid India mostly just posts spreading awareness with donation links and articles that tell you exactly where we stand as a country that has a population that’s decreasing by the hundreds DAILY.
I think I’ll only be reblogging posts about the current crisis at hand for a while.....I don’t have much to say other than that this country is dying, the major cities and industrial/economic hubs of India are affected the worse, and the ruling party is doing next to nothing to curb the situation. I’ve tried to donate as much as I can and now I will try and pester my parents who have better resources to do the same, anything at all will go a long way to save the lives of people the govt has forsaken entirely. We are for the most part helpless and on our own. The youth’s effort to stabilize resources and distribute it to people in need is as far as we can claim that any substantial steps have been taken to control and cushion the pandemic and the govt has played NO PART IN THIS EFFORT AT ALL.
Please if you can DONATE/ REBLOG/ SIGNAL BOOST please do;

Jakarta Indonesia is the MOST environmentally vulnerable city in the world - climate change, pollution, heatwaves, earthquakes, flooding.
https://weather.com/en-IN/india/videos/video/asia-hosts-99-of-the-worlds-100-most-environmentally-vulnerable-cities
Jakarta is the “worst-performing city in the ranking”, followed by India’s Delhi – each of which houses more than 10 million people – in a study of the world’s 576 largest cities conducted by United Kingdom-based business risk consultancy Verisk Maplecroft.
Indonesia’s financial hub and most densely-populated city scored particularly bad in terms of air pollution, earthquakes and flooding. The report noted that Bandung and Surabaya were also among the world’s top 10 most environmentally vulnerable cities. “With rising emissions driving weather-related risk and populations growing in many cities across the developing world, the risks to citizens, real assets and commercial operations are only going to rise,” wrote Verisk Maplecroft head of environment and climate change Will Nichols of the report published on Wednesday. A case in point, flooding in Jakarta in 2020 forced more than 34,000 residents to leave their homes and, according to Indonesian Entrepreneurs Association (Hippi) chair Sarman Simanjorang, cost an estimated Rp 1 trillion (US$70.05 million) in economic losses as stores were closed and supply chains disrupted. Acting Jakarta Environment Agency head Syarifudin said traffic congestion and air and water pollution were common in large cities worldwide. The Jakarta administration has implemented measures to curb these problems, but cooperation with neighboring regions remains important, he added. “Controlling water pollution in rivers, for example, requires the Depok, Bekasi, Bogor [West Java] and Tangerang [Banten] administrations to curb water pollution in their respective areas because our rivers are connected,” he said on Sunday. Jakarta’s environmental risk is so dire that Indonesian President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo admitted in 2019 that it was one of the main reasons the government wanted to move the country’s capital to East Kalimantan. “We need to stop overwhelming Jakarta with overpopulation, traffic congestion and water and air pollution. We have to tackle these problems,” Jokowi said at a press conference at Merdeka Palace on Aug. 26, 2019. Greenpeace Southeast Asia climate and energy campaigner Tata Mustasya said on Saturday that the government’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions was key to mitigating Jakarta’s environmental and climate risks. Indonesia, as per its commitment to the landmark Paris Agreement, has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 29 percent relative to a business-as-usual scenario by 2030, but many researchers are skeptical as to the country’s chances of success, mainly due to its growing use of fossil fuels. In March, the Environment and Forestry Ministry announced that the government was planning to set a net-zero emissions target for 2070. “Indonesia’s commitment toward net zero emissions is, so far, set for 2070, which would be too late, because climate change would devastate people’s livelihoods by then, especially those living in vulnerable areas like Jakarta,” he told The Jakarta Post via phone call. Meanwhile, Rujak Center for Urban Studies executive director Elisa Sutanudjaja urged the Jakarta administration to tighten regulations related to the city’s transportation industry to curb air pollution. The city’s policy, as embodied by the Jakarta Cleaner Air program, assumes that motorized vehicles contribute the largest share to Jakarta’s air pollution at 46 percent. Thus, Jakarta has launched several programs to curb transportation pollution, such as by expanding public transportation and implementing no-emission zones. “For regional administrations, the easiest and fastest mitigation solution is intervening in the transportation and mobility sector,” she said. Notably, environmental groups, such as the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), have challenged the city’s assumptions with maps showing that most pollution comes from coal-fired power plants in the neighboring provinces of Banten and West Java. Huge Policy Change of Vaccine Administration in India??
Triggered by the highly inflaming second wave of Covid-19 virus infection spread, India has announced huge change in their policy of administering Covid 19 Vaccines by permitting individual state authorities to directly buy vaccines from various manufacturing companies and thereby cutting the free-vaccine policy. India who are the second largest population on the planet, is currently undergoing heavy spread (circa 400,000 reported infections per day with around 4,000 casualties per day) of the deadly virus and the government is forced to implement strict measures in order to control it.
Major cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Cochin, Lucknow, Ajmer, Ranchi have already declared full or partial lockdowns in order to curb the spread. The test positivity of some the areas are as high as 50%. A Local news channel from the southern city, Cochin has quoted the District administration head as “strict measures are taken for the safety and security of the people. From 3rd May 2021 onwards strict restrictions, almost equivalent to lockdown has been declared. Heavy infected areas are classified as containment zones and are under complete lock down. Some area’s situation is alarming as the test positivity is more than 50%. However, the vaccine shortage is one of the hurdles and we have urged the central government to provide more dosages. Meantime, the state government has decided to use the Russian made Sputnik also in addition to the Indian made Astra Zenecca and Covaxine.”
Meanwhile, huge campaigns were going on in the Social media against the exporting of Indian made vaccines and the Central Government decision to use other vaccines and to import more variants is to be read along with it.
What Next for Countries without vaccine production centers??
It is evident that the countries who doesn’t produce vaccine has to wait a bit more. Being the major vaccine producers in the world, India’s decision to temporarily stop the export of vaccine will definitely affect these countries including Kenya. However, it is time to think about the alternatives.
