NEW DELHI (IDN) – On February 6, protesters blocked roads at an estimated 10,000 spots across India as part of the ongoing movement against the new farm laws enacted by the national government last year. For over two months, the most populous democracy in the world has witnessed what is being called one of the biggest protests in human history.

Hundreds of thousands of farmers have been rallying against three new laws that have thrown open the agriculture sector to private players. Protesters feel the legislation will allow a corporate takeover of crop production and trading, which would eventually impact their earnings and land ownership.

The movement has overcome regional, religious, gender and ideological differences to build pressure. Leftist farm unions, religious organisations and traditional caste-based brotherhoods called khaps, which make pronouncements on social issues, are working in tandem through resolute sit-ins and an aggressive boycott of politicians.

India’s right-wing government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi of the Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP, pushed the laws through the parliament in September 2020, despite lacking a majority in the upper house and agriculture being in the jurisdiction of state governments. The protest is a response to the lack of respect for parliamentary democracy and federalism, but its main focus is the pervasive corporate influence on governance.

After limits on corporate contributions were removed and allowed to be made anonymously, 8.2 billion dollars was spent on Indian parliamentary elections in 2019, which exceeded how much was spent on the U.S. election in 2016 by 26 per cent. Most of this money came from corporations and the BJP was the primary recipient.

Farm crisis is the fuel

Farmers are a large electoral block in India, with half the population being engaged in agriculture. No political party can afford to offend them publicly even though policymakers have done little to increase farm incomes and address their indebtedness. Around 300,000 farmers died by suicide between 1995 and 2013, mostly due to financial stress. In 2019, another 10,281 farmers took their lives.

Indian farms are mostly family-owned, and the land is a source of subsistence for millions. Around 86 per cent of farmers, however, till less than five acres while the other 14 per cent, mostly upper castes, own over half of the country’s 388 million acres of arable land.

Farmers in a few north Indian states were able to consolidate their holdings through increased incomes with the introduction of irrigation, modern seeds, fertilisers, machines, market infrastructure and guaranteed price support from the government during the Green Revolution in the 1960s.

But rising input costs and climate crisis have adversely impacted the profits there as well. In Punjab, the most agriculturally-developed state, for instance, the input costs of electric motors, labour, fertiliser and fuel rose by 100 to 290 per cent from 2000 to 2013, but the support price of wheat and rice rose by only 122 to 137 per cent in the same period, according to a government report. Heavy use of chemicals, mono-cropping and farm mechanisation have damaged the soil, affecting productivity and forcing farmers into debt.

Strength and strategy

Punjab saw widespread protests as soon as the laws were enacted. Farmers occupied railway tracks and toll plazas on major roads besides corporate-owned thermal plants, gas stations and shopping malls. Scores of subscribers left Jio, the telecom service owned by the top Indian businessman perceived to be close to Prime Minister Modi.

Farm unions also held regular sit-ins in front of the houses of prominent political leaders forcing an important regional party to leave the national government alliance. Several state leaders of the ruling party resigned from their posts as well. Similar scenes played out in the neighbouring state of Haryana, where leaders were publicly shamed and the helicopter of the elected head of the government was prevented from landing for a public meeting after farmers dug up the helipad area.

In November, thousands of farmers drove their tractor trolleys towards the national capital as they played protest songs by celebrity singers. Stocked with rations, clothing, water and wood for months, they braved tear gas shells and water cannons used by the police along the way. Powerful tractors pushed heavy transport vehicles, concrete slabs and barbed wires that the administration had placed en route out of their way.

Open libraries and medical camps were set up and volunteers offered their skills, ranging from tailoring to tutoring children. Besides speeches by the farm leaders, cultural performances, film screenings and wrestling bouts became a regular feature. More farmers poured in with each passing day.

“These occupations are not just a reaction of wronged citizens who have set out to reform the Indian parliament or assert dissent. Rather, they form an important stage in a still-unfolding narrative of militant anti-capitalist struggle,” wrote Aditya Bahl, a doctoral scholar at the John Hopkins University who is archiving the peasants’ revolts that took place in Punjab in the 1960s and ’70s.

The Indian Supreme Court suspended the implementation of laws and formed a four-member expert committee on Jan. 13 to look into the issue. Farmers have, however, refused to meet the committee members, alleging that many of them have already written or spoken in favour of the laws.

The protests are not only targeting domestic companies and political figures. Farmers have also burnt effigies of Uncle Sam, the World Trade Organisation and IMF, signifying the influence of global trade over domestic agricultural policies. Developed countries have been pressuring India for last three decades to open up its agriculture sector to multinational players by slashing subsidies and reducing public procurement and distribution of food grains to the poor.

Protesters are also seeking a legal right to sell their produce at a guaranteed price. The Indian government usually declares a minimum support price on various crops based on the costs of their production, but only a fraction of the produce is procured at that rate. In the absence of government procurement facilities in their areas, most farmers have to settle for a lower price offered by private traders. A law would make it mandatory for private players to buy the produce at a declared price.

“If Indian farmers are able to get the law on guaranteed price passed through their current agitation, they will become a role model for farmers across the world living under heavy debts,” Sharma continued. “India should put its foot down at the WTO and create much-needed disruption in the world food trade policy for the benefit of the global agriculture sector.”

The movement grows

The BJP-led national government has faced numerous protests over the last six years of its rule..... The country has dropped 26 places in the Democracy Index’s global ranking since 2014 due to “erosion of civil liberties.”

This is the first time peasants have been galvanised in such large numbers against the government. The government has already held 11 rounds of negotiations with farmers’ representatives and offered to suspend the laws for one and a half years on Jan. 20. But farmers are not budging from their demand of the complete repeal of the laws and legal cover for the selling of their crops at a guaranteed price.

On January 26, which marks India’s Republic Day, 19 out of 28 states witnessed protests against the farm laws.

In Delhi, however, a plan to organise a farmers’ tractor march parallel to the official Republic Day function, went awry. A group of protesters clashed with police at multiple spots and stormed the iconic Red Fort, a traditional seat of power for the Mughals, where the colonial British and independent India’s prime ministers have also raised their flags.

The protesters unfurled banners of the farm unions and Sikhs – one of the minority religious groups and the most prominent face of the protests. Mainstream media and ruling party supporters used the opportunity to blame the movement for desecration and religious terrorism. Security forces charged sleeping farmers with batons at one location, filed cases against movement leaders, allowed opponents to pelt campaigners with stones, arrested journalists and shut down the Internet.

The attacks, therefore, ended up lifting the flagging morale of the farmers and helped the movement gain even more supporters, who shunned the government and media narrative. Massive community gatherings of khaps were organised at multiple places over the next few days, extending their support to the protests and issuing a boycott call for the BJP and its political allies.

Mending fault lines

The movement has also been able to overcome regional and gender divisions, and is trying to address caste divides.

The states of Haryana and Punjab are often at loggerheads on the issue of sharing of river waters. Haryana was carved out of Punjab on linguistic lines in 1966, but most of the rivers flow through the current Punjab state. Haryana has been seeking a greater amount of water for use by its farmers, while Punjab’s farmers oppose the demand, citing reduced water flow in the rivers over the years. The current protests have united farmers for a common cause, helping them understand each other even though opponents have made attempts revive the water issue.

Women have also been participating in the protests in large numbers. They are either occupying roads on Delhi’s borders or managing homes and farms in the absence of men, while taking part in protest marches in villages.

“Earlier, we were able to rally only 8,000-10,000 women for a protest. Today that number has swelled to 25,000-30,000, as they recognised the threats posed by the new laws to the livelihoods of their families,” said Harinder Bindu, who leads the women’s wing of the largest farm union in Punjab. “For many women, this is the first time they are participating in a protest, which is a big change because they were earlier confined to household work. Men are getting used to seeing women participate and recognising the value they bring to a movement.”

“When women members participate in sit-ins, men manage the house. I feel this movement will bring greater focus on women’s issues within the farming community – one of which is the need to support the widows of farmers who died by suicide due to financial constraints.”

In Punjab, less than four per cent of private farmland belongs to Dalits, the lowest caste in the traditional social hierarchy of India, even though they constitute 32 per cent of the state’s population. They often earn their livelihoods through farm work or daily wage labour. Even though Dalits have a legal right to till village common land, attempts to assert that right often lead to violent clashes with upper-caste landlords who want to keep it for themselves. Dalits are waging similar battles across India. Researchers recorded 31 land conflicts involving 92,000 Dalits in 2019. A few of the farmers’ unions have supported and raised funds for Dalit agitations in the past.

The movement is gradually encompassing other rural issues beyond the farm laws. In the state of Maharashtra, for instance, thousands of tribal people travelled to the capital Mumbai on Jan. 23 to extend support to the farmers. They also asserted their own long pending demand for land titles under the Forest Rights Act, which recognises traditional rights of scheduled tribes and other forest dwellers on the use of land and other forest resources.

Again this bill will not give any benefit to the farmers as they do not have any storage facilities available but the bigger players and institutions can store unlimited storage which can led to the artificial price fluctuation, and less money will be offered to the farmers during harvesting because they will show that the we do not require any produce and will offer the least possible amount to the farmers.

The demands of protesting farmers are listed below:-

Ø  Farmers are demanding to strengthen the MSP and make it a legal right for the farmers because now as well the farmers can’t get the full profit from the MSP because the government does not offer that for almost 20 + crops. Once MSP is a legal , it will become a right of the farmer.

Ø  The reforms of APMC;s are needed not the removal of it and middlemen will stay as it support the employment and help farmers in storage.

Ø  Farmers want government to invest in agriculture sector instead of allowing or permitting the private institutions to intervene.

Current Situation:- Farmers from more than 20 states are participating in this agitation The government ignored them when they were protesting in their respective states, so now the farmers are sitting on the borders of New Delhi, Centre of India. It is already been 110 days they are now sitting over there and more than 280 farmers died (some by natural deaths and other by suicide).

Government Response :- There were 11 meetings been done between the 32 Farmer Union Leaders(those who are representing the farmers) and Agriculture Minister (BJP Party) Narendra Singh Tomar but no results as government is not ready to repeal the laws and meet the demands of the farmers. Now from past 2 months there is no meeting. The meetings were also done by the party due to the pressure from opposition and the world.

Heavy deployment of military and police is done on the borders of Delhi to stop farmers to enter in the capital. Tear gas and “Lathi charge” (Beating with a stick ) has been done by the government to clear the protest sight but the resistance of the farmers is constant.

There are rallies in support of farmers in every corner of the World (Canada, America, Italy, Germany, Sweden, UK and many more). Instead of listening to the farmers, there is Human rights violation going on, the government forcefully tried to remove the farmers from the protest site and put the charges on them.

Media Coverage:- Only few Indian Channels (NDTV, SchoopWhoop Unscripted and other small media houses) are covering otherwise the National Media of India is completely sold out and just speak in favor of government or the  corporate.  Because this is the largest protest in the history, the BBC news , Vox.Com and many international media houses give coverage to the news. Moreover, farmer also launched their own small magazine and news paper name “Trolley Times” to keep people inform about the plans of corporate as media was white washing it.

The parliament of the UK held a debate in the UK parliament for the discussion of three farm laws due to the constant solidarity of people of UK and members of parliament. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also showed solidarity with Indian farmers by defending their right to protest. The other famous personalities who supported Indian farmers worldwide includes the big names like pop-star Rihana, she tweeted for Indian farmers and showed concern for them, Greta Thunberg, Meena Harris also stands with farmers, Rupi Kaur Amanda Cerny, Lilly Singh, nav, Jameela Jamil, Jay Sean, Hassan Min haj , Susan Sarandon , Trevor Noah and many other names.

Farmers are still protesting and saying that they will protest till these farm bill are not repealed because not just their livelihood depends on agriculture but there entire existence depends on their lands . Indian farmers are connected with their lands which they will lose within next few years if these bills get passed.

When playing for the West Indies, the dynamics seem to change drastically.In all T20 cricket, Hetmyer strikes at 130.95, whereas Pooran’s strike rate is just a tick over 142. When turning out for the West Indies, those numbers dwindle to 116.91 and 124.07, respectively. The average also takes a dive, with Hetmyer averaging 19.96 (as opposed to 25.15) and Pooran averaging 22.64 (as opposed to 24.39).Moreover, Hetmyer and Pooran don’t possess a skill-set similar to that of Babar Azam or Virat Kohli. The West Indies duo are more likely to be classified as butchers of the cricket ball rather than surgeons, meaning that picking the gaps and knocking the ball around isn’t their forte.Unsurprisingly, they rely on a lot of boundaries and with those not very common in the middle phases, they get stuck at the crease. The numbers drive home that school of thought too. While Hetmyer has a boundary percentage of 53.43 in T20Is, Pooran's corresponding tally stands at 64.03.Hetmyer has crossed 25 only 7 times out of 30. In the rest of his innings, he strikes at 101.2. When he gets past the 10-run barrier but fails to breach the 25-run mark, he strikes at 104.92 – something that puts immense pressure on the others to increase the tempo. The statistics paint a similar picture for Pooran. While he has gotten past 25 on 9 occasions, he has also failed to inject impetus at the outset. If he is dismissed in the 10-25 range, his strike rate is 105.75, whereas if he is dismissed below 25, the tally drops to 100.35.That, coupled with the fact that these two West Indies batters rarely make their starts count, puts enormous run-scoring burden on players such as Pollard and Russell.

POINTS TABLE | FIXTURES Speaking to ANI, a DC source said that Pant has been constantly working on his injury with the physio and is now fit to go. A final call is expected before the toss on Tuesday if DC will allow him to play or give him a game more before he returns to the field. “He has been working closely with the physio and trainer and has completed sessions without any trouble and is fit. A final call is expected to be taken before toss but Pant is likely to play against Punjab,” the source said. Speaking ahead of the game against Rajasthan Royals on October 14, skipper Shreyas Iyer had spoken about missing Pant’s presence in the XI.

“We have got nice back-ups who can come and perform. We are definitely missing him as a wicketkeeping all-rounder. We have other players as well who can be equally good and they can perform for the team anytime,” Iyer had said. Interestingly, Pant was also seen undergoing a fitness test before the game at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. A Delhi Capitals’ source had confirmed on October 13 that Pant had suffered a tear after it was initially thought to be just a hamstring pull. “He has a Grade 1 tear and it is not just a hamstring pull as was believed to be. He is under observation and we are hoping he gets fit quickly,” the source had said. Pant had on October 9 limped his way to complete the catch off Varun Aaron’s bat as Delhi celebrated an emphatic win over Rajasthan at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Before that, he was seen struggling while reaching the wickets to take the throws from the fielders. Delhi Test ends in a draw, India clinch series against Lanka

While the win in Nagpur ensured a 1-0 series win for India, it will certainly be a moral victory for a beleaguered Sri Lankan team, which also had to endure physical discomfort due to pollution in the national capital.

Sri Lanka were never going to chase 410 but did well enough to bat as many as 103 overs in the second innings, finishing at 299 for five. The captains decided to shake hands after the end of seven mandatory overs.

En route his third Test hundred, De Silva battled severe muscle stiffness before retiring hurt on 119, but he instilled the self-belief in debutant Roshen Silva (74 not out) and the maverick Niroshan Dickwella (44 not out), who displayed enormous determination while playing out the final session of the match.

This is the first time in six Tests this year that the Islanders managed to stretch Virat Kohli's men to the last session of a match, deservingly earning a favourable result after all the mauling in the past few months.

During the first session, Jadeja endured mixed luck with a couple of no-balls. The first one accounted for Angelo Mathews (1), with the umpires missing it altogether, while the second was a brilliant delivery to clean up Chandimal but the umpires were more cautious and promptly called him for overstepping.

First-innings centurion Mathews was dismissed when he edged one off Jadeja to the slips. But the left-arm spinner was lucky as he was not called for a no-ball even as replays showed that no part of his foot was behind the popping crease.

However, Jadeja was not so lucky when he bowled a classic left-armer's delivery that had Chandimal beaten all ends up. This time umpire Joel Wilson checked for the no-ball and the Sri Lanka captain got a reprieve.

It was a day when the Feroz Shah Kotla was bathed in bright sunshine, cutting through the haze that had forced the visiting players to don anti-pollution masks till yesterday.

In the beginning of 2017, the talented Mumbai pacer, who had begun to impress with his pace and control in the city’s maidans while playing for Parsee Gymkhana in local cricket, went through tremendous personal strife. “In January, I suffered ankle posterior impingement, which required a surgery, and hamstring tear one after other. The injuries were going to keep me out the game for about a year. In March, I learnt that mother was suffering from (ovarian) cancer,” Deshpande told TOI from Dubai on Wednesday.

At a stage in his career where his sole focus had to be on cricket, Deshpande did well to cope with the massive personal blow, which ultimately saw his mother succumb to the deadly disease last year. “Her whole treatment period was tough, because it’s not just the cancer patient, but his/her family members too who too suffer, seeing the patient in so much pain. However, my father was a pillar of support for me at that time. Since I was injured in 2017, that one-and a-half-year period was very tough for me as I was not playing cricket, and my mom was suffering from cancer. Through that year, I just kept my hope, and focused on getting better with my rehab and fitness,” recalled the 25-year-old. On Wednesday night, Deshpande, bowling yorkers consistently, gave away just eight, when the Royals needed 22 off the final over, with Rahul Tewatia and Shreyas Gopal at the crease. After the game, his Capitals’ teammate and South African pace ace Kagiso Rabada praised the youngster’s ability to fire in yorkers at will in practice, and even called him a “future India prospect.” “I felt really good after making my team win and bowling in a crunch situation. It was something which I did not expect in my first game. I was just focusing on my death bowling whenever I was practicing, and just tried to execute what I had practiced. I was not trying anything new, as it was ‘game time’ and current situation. I’m now looking forward to do much better in the next game,” said Deshpande. Interestingly, the IPL hasn’t been amongst Deshpande’s top priorities. The talented pacer wants to play for India in Test cricket. A couple of years back, he was asked by Kings XI Punjab to appear for a trial at Mohali, but he stunningly, he preferred to skip what some would term as the ‘chance of a lifetime,’ deciding instead to turn out for his club Parsee Gymkhana in a Purshottam Shield second round match against CCI scheduled at the same time at Parsee Gymkhana. Last year, a big furore took place in Mumbai cricket when Deshpande was dropped from the Mumbai team for the Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy. After much hue and cry, he was eventually included in the squad, and proved his worth with some good spells.

DUBAI: Veteran pacer Ishant Sharma was on Monday ruled out of the Indian Premier League with a rib-cage injury, his team Delhi Capitals said. Ishant is the second Delhi Capitals player to be ruled out after leg-spinner Amit Mishra, whose campaign ended due to a ring finger fracture sustained during one of the earlier matches. The 32-year-old Test specialist had featured in only one of the seven games that Delhi Capitals have played so far, finishing his four overs wicketless for 26 runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Abu Dhabi.

“Fast bowler Ishant Sharma experienced an acute episode of left rib cage pain while bowling at a team training session on October 7, 2020 in Dubai,” Delhi Capitals said in a statement. “Subsequent investigations revealed that he sustained a left internal oblique muscle tear. This injury will unfortunately rule him out of the remainder of the IPL.” Ishant has played 97 Tests, 80 ODIs and 14 T20Is for India. But his participation in the Test series in Australia later this year will now depend on how his rehabilitation programme goes. While Delhi Capitals is all set to seek a replacement with two senior bowlers ruled out of the remainder of the IPL, Ishant’s absence wouldn’t hurt them as much as Mishra’s, simply because of the wrist spinner’s role on the bigger UAE grounds. Delhi Capitals had tried all their pacers and Harshal Patel seemed to have fit the bill as far as head coach Ricky Ponting is concerned. In case, Delhi Capitals replace Ishant with a pacer, they have Pradeep Sangwan among net bowlers, who can directly integrate with the team. DC could also look for a second Indian wicketkeeper in case Rishabh Pant’s hamstring injury break takes more than a week. With Shimron Hetmyer being dropped at the expense of a wicketkeeper Carey, Delhi Capitals can check with Rajasthan Royals if they have any plans to release one of their keeper Anuj Rawat as a part of mid-season transfer. The Royals already have three keepers playing in their XI — Jos Buttler, Sanju Samson and Robin Uthappa.
