Delhi Gets Its Fourth Woman CM - Rekha Gupta
Delhi has a new Chief Minister, and it’s none other than Rekha Gupta, a seasoned politician with years of administrative experience. On Wednesday evening, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced her appointment, making her the fourth woman to hold the top post in Delhi.
A Grand Celebration
As soon as the news broke, a wave of celebrations erupted at her residence in Shalimar Bagh. Supporters gathered in large numbers, chanting slogans and beating drums. Her husband, businessman Manish Gupta, expressed his excitement and pledged full support for his wife. Meanwhile, her mother-in-law, Meera Gupta, distributed sweets and stated confidently that Rekha Gupta would accomplish what the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) could not.
Political Journey and Experience
Rekha Gupta’s political career spans decades. She began as a student leader at Daulat Ram College in 1993, becoming the general secretary of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) in 1995 and its president in 1996. Her affiliation with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), laid the foundation for her political career.
In 2002, Rekha Gupta joined the BJP and steadily climbed the ranks. She served as the secretary of the BJP’s youth wing in Delhi and later as its national secretary. She has also held positions such as general secretary of the BJP Mahila Morcha, national vice-chairperson of BJP Mahila Morcha, and a member of the BJP National Executive.
Electoral Success and Challenges
Gupta’s political journey has had its highs and lows. She first entered electoral politics in 2007, winning the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections from North Pitampura. She served in key positions within the MCD, including vice-chairperson of the standing committee and chairperson of the education department in the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC).
However, her attempts to enter the Delhi Assembly were initially unsuccessful. She lost twice to AAP’s Bandana Kumari in 2015 and 2020 but significantly reduced the margin the second time. In 2022, she won the MCD elections again and was BJP’s candidate for mayor but lost to AAP’s Shelly Oberoi. Finally, in the 2025 elections, she defeated Bandana Kumari by a massive margin of 29,595 votes, securing her place as Delhi’s CM.
Personal Life and Vision for Delhi
Born in Haryana’s Jind district, Rekha Gupta moved to Delhi as a child. She holds degrees in commerce, management, and law. She is a mother of two—her daughter is studying in Australia, and her son is pursuing engineering in Tamil Nadu.
Supporters and colleagues describe her as a bold and experienced leader who understands Delhi’s challenges. As she takes office, all eyes are on her to see how she leads the capital city to new heights.

[ad_1] GG News Bureau New Delhi, 16 Jan: As the nomination process for the upcoming Delhi Assembly Elections is underway, BJP candidate from New Delhi, Parvesh Sahib Verma, has attracted significant attention following the disclosure of a massive surge in his assets. According to the affidavit filed by Verma, his assets have risen by over Rs 100 crore in the past five years, a figure that has raised eyebrows among political observers. The affidavit, available with the Election Commission, shows that Verma’s total assets increased from Rs 15.52 crore in 2019 to Rs 115.62 crore in 2025. Notably, his movable assets, which stood at Rs 3.2 crore in 2019, have now grown to Rs 96.50 crore, reflecting a substantial increase during the five-year period. The New Delhi constituency, one of the most high-profile in the capital, is witnessing a triangular contest this time. In the fray are Verma of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Arvind Kejriwal, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo and former Chief Minister of Delhi, and Sandeep Dikshit from Congress, the son of former Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit. It is a significant race as both Verma and Dikshit are scions of former Delhi Chief Ministers, with Verma being the son of Sahib Singh Verma, a former BJP leader and Chief Minister of Delhi. Meanwhile, Parvesh Verma’s campaign has been marred by controversy. On Wednesday, the Delhi Police registered an FIR against Verma for allegedly violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). The FIR was filed after an incident in which Verma reportedly distributed shoes to sanitation workers in the Valmiki colony in the Mandir Marg Police Station area, an act that was seen as a violation of MCC guidelines. The Election Commission had intervened, prompting the Mandir Marg SHO to lodge the FIR. Verma, however, defended his actions, claiming he only honored sanitation workers by placing shoes on their feet at a temple and did not distribute any footwear. Verma formally filed his nomination for the New Delhi seat on Wednesday, following prayers at the Gauri Shankar temple in Chandni Chowk and the Valmiki temple. He will now face the formidable challenge posed by AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal, who has been the Chief Minister of Delhi for two consecutive terms, and Congress’s Sandeep Dikshit in the February 5 elections.
