What's your opinion on Daroline? I wish they'd have focused more on the similarities between them. SEers parallel them pushing the framed photo down in 6x6 and 6x7 as them being insecure of SE even though that was a group picture. I also saw a gifset paralleling Stefan telling Caroline that Damon was gone and not coming back to him saying that about Stefan in 3x1 to Elena.

Damon and Caroline have a lot in common, but their past muddied the waters. Caroline and Matt are those two characters that needed to continue hating Damon because if they didn't, then no one would. That's me being honest. I debate fans all the time about Damon's character journey because he wasn't redeemed in TVD, he was resurrected - there's a difference. That's why redemption is heavily discussed in season 8. "But I don't need some spirit journey with a bunch of strangers to convince me that my redemption is within reach. I just need the people I love." Damon's redemption was meant for his human life.

Caroline was always contradictory. Silas' third sacrifice is perfect example. Caroline could kill a witch to save Bonnie, but she couldn't kill Tom to save Stefan. Caroline became a Delena stan in season 6 because she saw who Elena was without Damon. As I often say, Elena erased herself when she erased Damon. The point of Damon reminding her of moments they shared was to remind Elena of who she was when she was with him.

It made sense to me that Liz's death would bring Damon and Caroline closer... mainly because Liz was the entire reason Damon began to care about Caroline in the first place.

Caroline basically had to be written opposite Damon in 2x1. So you get Liz...

I partially agree with Candice on season 4. It's great that she has the balls to say that he’s an asshole, that she has every right to say that he’s an asshole, that he deserves to be called an asshole. However, it's best she say that to Damon's face rather than to Elena... otherwise it serves no purpose other than to hurt her best friend rather than hurt the person she truly wants to hurt. That's why I view Caroline as a victim and Bonnie as a survivor. She's basically allowing Damon to destroy her friendship with Elena. To the extent that Elena is kicking Caroline out of the Salvatore house on girls night. Caroline is taking her anger out on the wrong person.

I love that final link because it's true. That's why I continue to debate Damon "cheating" on Elena. He never did. Elena quite literally gave him permission to carry on with other women while she was in her sleep spell. Elena not only knows Damon well enough to know, she feels safe enough in their love to know that he won't fall in love with another. She knows that Damon's heart will always belong to her.

Hi Rachel! I'd love to hear which ships you were most surprised to like or dislike - ie ships that you EXPECTED to like or dislike based on all you'd seen and heard beforehand but ended up feeling the opposite about. For example, as a Bangel fan and someone who generally prefers Stefan's general type of character to Damon's, I expected to love Stelena and dislike Delena, but much to my surprise I shipped Delena and really didn't like Stefan or Stelena much at all. And based on gifsets and discourse I thought I'd love Piper/Leo, but when I actually watched Charmed I'm like, "how is it possible that Leo is in every episode yet given no personality, interests, quirks etc and why is he okay with the perpetually dour, infectiously miserable, NEVER satisfied and increasingly mean Piper sniping at him, insulting him, nagging and complaining in every single scene?!" Finally, I thought I'd love Barchie but really disliked them and fell weirdly in love with Varchie instead! I'd love to hear yours!!

Similarly to you, I expected to like Stelena but found the ship fairly dull. I didn't hate it by any means, but I found the Delena dynamic much more interesting.

I also did not expect to fall in love with Klaroline, but it became my main TVDVerse ship.

why do you think the writers chose to make the steroline proposal so similar to the stelena one?

If I were a Steroline shipper, I would say that the purpose is to show that SE was a long-ago fantasy but SC is what's real and immediate and in front of him and that's what the parallels are meant to indicate. The "healthy" Steroline equivalent of Delena's "We're messy and we're complicated but we're real".

As a Stelena shipper, and taking in the fact that season 8 has a lot of loaded Stelena moments (not even accounting for season 7)

In season 8 Stefan could’ve spoken about how he told Caroline at the festival that things would be OK again, that they’ll make it through, he chose to speak about Elena

Caroline is the one who brings them up

Bonnie tells him to find hope,

the first thing we see him do is write in his diary to Elena:

The show even continues the narrative of Stefan being unable to leave town because Elena keeps him in MF:

which is a pattern Katherine brought up in season 5:

In 3x04 Klaus returns with him to Mystic Falls because Stefan couldn’t adequately lie to Rebekah about maybe loving someone else the way he loved Elena.

In 3x21, 3x22 he says he’ll leave town if she chooses Damon but she chooses him instead and more than that becomes a vampire so he stays.

Even Cade who is manipulated by Katherine, the way Katherine tortures Stefan has nothing to do with Caroline directly, she’s a casualty of her plan yes, but her plan is focused on making Stefan destroy his relationship with Elena once and for all, to poison their relationship:

When I spoke to the anon about 8x05 and the kitchen scene, there was something about it that felt off to me that I couldn’t articulate until now. Making breakfast and getting coffee/tea whatever in the morning with your partner is innocuous enough, thousands of couples do that all the time, but within the context of other scenes in the season it feels as if Stefan is trying to recreate the Stelena fantasy life with Caroline in an effort to do what Elena told him to do in 6x22: be happy.

When push comes to shove, Elena is still the person Stefan draws hope, strength and inspiration from as seen in 8x01 and in 8x05 and there’s just something mechanical about his life with Caroline.

Something I miss about Tumblr when TVD was airing was how many Delena shippers actively posted analyses, gifsets, etc. There are still some that create gifsets, but not many. And there's barely anyone that posts analyses of them now. Many Delena shippers left Tumblr after 3x22, 6x22, and 8x16. Judging Delena shippers was rampant on this platform so the people that used to post either post other fandoms now, migrated to Twitter or left the TVD fandom completely. I didn't have Tumblr for the most part at the time it was airing, but I was often reading well-written posts on Delena. As toxic as it was from anti shippers, it was a more enjoyable fandom experience. Because Delena got endgame and people are more toxic and hypocritical than they were back then against Delena and their shippers I don't see text posts about them much on Tumblr. Even the Delena shippers I interacted with back then were more pleasant than the ones now because the ones now have been brainwashed into being overly critical of Damon and barely critical of Stefan so as not to get on the bad side of anti shippers that may follow them. I wish I didn't get rid of Tumblr so soon and stayed on the fandom when it was airing so I could enjoy reading more about Delena and interacting with fellow shippers as I miss how those interactions were. Now a lot of the text posts are anti Delena, Elena, and Damon salt posts or unrelated posts.

I'm huge on analysis, parallels, themes, overlays, and gif posts. Most of my posts focus on the actual writing. While Stefan and Elena parallel each other a great deal, not all of those parallels are positive ones. Denial is something she and Stefan have in common. She could've spent 145 years denying she fell in love with Damon just as Stefan spent 145 years denying he fell in love with Katherine. She would've remained with Stefan for those 145 years, but she would've been miserable her entire existence because Stefan isn't the brother she wants. That's why they had to make her a vampire. They forced Elena to face her fear for the sake of living true to herself. She's not meant to repeat Stefan's history. Delena has an insane number of parallels.
