Stelena shippers claim that Damon saved Caroline from a werewolf bite and was acting more selfless for Elena's forgiveness and to look good in front of her and that if she stopped caring about him he wouldn't care about her family and friends.

Damon did save Caroline from a werewolf bite. Tyler was going for her, and he pulled a Rose. I won't ignore the fact that while he did save Caroline from Tyler, Elena was at the center of his choice to rescue her in the first place as everyone forgot all about them in their desire to protect Elena. And at the same time, I won't ignore the fact that it didn't take long for Caroline to talk him into rescuing Tyler. Despite getting bit and nearly dying from it, Damon never sought revenge, never got even. He took it because he chose it. He could've easily let Caroline take the bite, but he put her life above his. He doesn't care about Caroline because of Elena. He cares about her because of Liz.

I wouldn't say that Damon was acting more selfless for Elena's forgiveness and to look good in front of her. Quite the opposite. He doesn't like Elena seeing the good in him all that often because he risks disappointing her as a result, and that's not his style. Damon shows her who he is at any given moment because he's a vampire and has been living as one for 145 years. If Damon wanted to impress Elena, she wouldn't be blind to the fact that he gave Rose a dream when she died, or blind to the fact that he apologized to Jeremy after Anna did. Damon would make sure Elena knew of these things if it was all about looking good. Damon would rather Elena accept him for who he is - as he is. If fans truly believe Damon acting a dick was meant to impress Elena, there's something wrong with them, and he acts a dick on a regular.

Damon would never stop caring about Elena's friends and family if she stopped caring about him. She told him to his face that he lost her forever, and it didn't phase him. It didn't stop him from being who he is. Damon is quite capable of caring outside of Elena. Most of his friendships are actually built that way. He just doesn't trust people as he trusts her. Doesn't connect with them as he does her. I know some fans don't get it, but she's a human doppelganger of the very woman that defined him as a vampire. She is the voice of his humanity, but that doesn't mean he's not capable of caring outside of her. He's just more vulnerable in her absence. It's easy for someone like Damon to slip back into old habits. As they say, old habits die hard.

I don't mean to cause a moment here, but I'd like to point out to the anon that Lindsay Ellis at no point said that twilight was good ("I am not saying that that Twilight deserves to be re-evaluated because it was secretly good the whole time"—Ellis) src: x. She just made a point that the book wasn't "that bad" to warrant the vitriol that it and fans received for the unforgivable crime of reading escapist fantasy. And more importantly, that Stephenie Meyer, of which her video talking about this was about, didn't warrant being treated like the antichrist for writing a bad book.

Does this mean it's above criticism? No! There is so much problematic stuff in Twilight. Meyer wrote worrisome stuff. But the criticism of "it's problematic" has been done to death, and at this point, is just an excuse to hate on women who like it. Ellis also made the point that you can criticise a bad book without being malicious about it, to the author and the fans. Which people didn't get the memo for, apparently. No one comes for people who like Bond or the Fast and Furious movies and gets out unscathed. I don't see the screenwriters of those films receiving hate mail at the rate Meyer was.

Look for Twilight memes and you'll find fans ripping the book to shreds. The name Renesmee, the stuff with Jacob, how annoying Edward is, etc. Hell, you've got fans rewriting the final book and naming blogs 'fucksmeyer' because they grew up and realised the problematic things for themselves. But they're also unapologetic of their love for it because they had to take that stance after at least a decade of being told they're stupid for liking it. No one is pretending Twilight is a good book. I'm over my Twilight hating era. People are allowed to like bad stuff.

Ok. Honestly I don’t care nearly enough about Twilight to get into any kind of serious discourse about the books or the people who like them because I don’t care, this all started simply because initiumseries was watching the movies for a laugh and messaged me about it and I wanted to see if something that happened in the movie was happened in the book so I looked it up realized I found Edward exponentially more annoying as an adult because he spends so much time verbalizing how much he hates himself and it’s tiring, posted that in good fun because it’s hilarious how much he whines then got an ask about how people should just embrace liking terrible content *like* twilight and then it got to this. I’m really not about to discuss whether or not people who liked twilight were persecuted for their reading choices and what that means because it frankly doesn’t really mean that much to me particularly since my stance on this blog about anything from delena to 365 days to twilight is that people like what they like it doesn’t matter to me so this is all to say this discourse is happening between anons through me, I’m not a part of it. I only contributed to the response that twilight is racist because that aspect of the series isn’t spoken about as much as the other problematic elements of the series

Rey and Alina. I have never watched SW or SaB but I have not heard good things about it and I am not here for woke rectification. You know what, Twilight was boring and had the problematique, but you know what? It was sincere to the very end. It was sincere trash. You know what I appreciate? Sincerity

Especially since Western fandom is being a whole bitch with their puritan standards and "XYZ IS BAD AND YOU'RE PROMOTING ABUSE AS A SHIPPER". This gets a bit annoying in danmei fandom circles where the black and white thinking brings about some cold ass takes about my faves (which is a story for another time, I'm digressing)

And speaking of danmei, come on. My ships are perfect for each other because other pairings would end in disaster and one murder attempt, plus there are various shades of problematic that I really can't dunk on belward shippers anymore (in fact if I had written twilight I'd have given Bella more character and made her commit a warcrime or two, just for development hghdhsjdj)

(the fantasy concept of that vampire/human romance was something I could get behind as a kid, which was why I defiantly shipped stelena and delena after reading the TVD books)

Am I gonna re-read the twilight saga? I don't think so, it was ultimately so and so and the romance wasn't really well written enough to catch my fancy (I liked clace better and those two spent 2.5 books thinking they're siblings and STILL having sexual tension pfft, I read only specifically curated trash).
