"Pellinore hunts a strange unique creature, the Questing Beast, which his family is fated to pursue, though neither they nor anybody else will ever catch it." (Diesel / David S LaForce, "Arthurian Heroes" section of AD&D Deities & Demigods, TSR, 1980) The Beast Glatisant, the Questing Beast, is not given its own heading or stats in this volume, but the illustration matches some medieval accounts of a creature with stag's feet, a serpent's head, leopard's body, and lion's haunch and tail. So: hooved, long neck, spotted, yellow/orange/brown in color, with a darker bushier tail tip, all point to it being based on misunderstood descriptions of a giraffe.

Woe! Transgender samurai be upon ye!
-pulling my old OC out of the filing cabinet and giving him a shampoo- LOOK I HAVE A NEW CHILD!! :D
I've decided to rework an old story/universe from several years ago, so here we go again, from the top:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
暁の物語 Akatsuki no Monogatari
光 Hikari
Hikari, aka Shitaikou, is a young ronin, a master-less samurai, wandering around Edo-era Japan on a soul-searching journey.
He was raised as a girl named Sayoko (小夜子) by a samurai family, and taught swordsmanship and the arts like his brothers, although he was never destined to become a warrior. When the time came to find him a husband, he stole two swords, ran away and changed his name.
He now walks the roads of Japan on a quest to find [insert as-of-yet undefined quest here], and offers his assistance to villagers on the way. In doing so, he often runs into yokais and other paranormal occurences, to the point where in time he becomes an expert on the occult underworld of Japan and is often nicknamed the Demon Samurai.
Hikari is accompanied in his travels by Chihiro (千尋), a kitsune, and by Mochi (餅), a totally normal cat with the usual amount of tails and absolutely no supernatural powers, no siree. He is also regularly involved with an onnagata (a cross-dressing kabuki actor) and a yokai-hunting Buddhist monk, both of which I have yet to name (Mochi's name is also susceptible of being changed soon), and meets all kinds of strange people on his travels.
Hikari has a kind heart and a strong sense of honour. His driving force is his desire to help others; although he is very naive at first, and misguided altruism often gets him in trouble. As the story progresses, he will grow more mature and cynical, often preferring the company of yokais to that of humans, but trying to retain hope and faith in his fellow men.
(You can see older drawings of Hikari, including different outfits, here)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Akatsuki no Monogatari (the Tale of Dawn) takes place in the very beginning of the Edo era, in the transition years between the warring period of the Sengoku-Jidai and the two hundred years of peace under the Tokugawa shogunate. It is a story about change and beginnings, both of a person and of a country.
Some name lore under the cut!
The kanji Hikari 光 means "light". Hikari is a "public first name", sort of an official nickname. It was common practice in feudal Japan (at least among the samurai class) to go by a public name and keep your real name private. In Hikari's case, that is also because he often frequents yokais and magicians, who could use his true name against him.
His real name is Shitaikou 志泰光 . The kanjis composing it mean "aspire", "gentle" and "light". He chose it as a reminder to himself to strive for kindness and to make the world a better place.
("Hikari" is the last kanji composing this name. When used with other kanjis, it is pronouced "kou". Such is the messed-up way kanjis work. -frustrated weeb noises-)
Hikari doesn't have a last name; he gave up his family's name when he ran away and saw no use in taking a new one: as a ronin he is not tied to any family.
His birth name, Sayoko 小夜子 , is composed of the kanjis "small", "night" and "daughter". Hence the title, Akatsuki no Monogatari, the tale of dawn, or how the night turns into the light.
#formerly this universe was called hakatsuki no monogatari because i had somehow convinced myself that akatsuki starts with an h (??????????)#the as-of-yet undefined quest may be a quest for a gender-transing yokai or deity#i need to do more research into shinto and buddhist deities i'm sure there must be one that fit the bill#or i can just use inari. their gender is unclear and their messenger animal is a fox which is well-known for shapeshifting#anyway i need to draw the rest of the cast and find a name for the onnagata#spoiler she's hikari's gf and they're T4T <3#my ocs#hikari#akatsuki no monogatari#samurai#ronin#japan#edo#transgender#blorbo from my brain

I love videos essays bc it’s like. huh I had feelings on that but thank you for putting it into deeper words and coherent feelings
#I always felt kinda. hesitant about the emperor as a player#I knew the twist but the greater impact of that twist#the pressuring to take the tadpole and the like didn’t sit well with me#but it’s like. listening to the video essay and thinking back on the game#and it’s like. yeah the emperor is……yeah#the player character is just a chess piece. the means to an end. a toy to manipulate#to see whatever the ambition is to the end#another thing I do love a good fantasy setting that has deities within it that are just as much god as they are reflections upon humanity#from the good to the terrible#it tickles my fancy#I also love the subtle narrative going on w selûne#she didn’t save shadowheart from shar. she didn’t save kethric from shar#she’s as much about shuffling mortals around like a chess board as her sister#yes it’s true that shadowheart came out of her quest as a stronger person. but was the suffering worth it?#was the suffering of her daughter Aylin worth it? what did it serve?#I like. thinking about fictional deities#it feels very pillars of eternity which I utterly adore the deities in that setting#god what a baller pantheon pillars of eternity has#owen talks

wish i knew the forgotten realms lore better...how am i meant to make my little ocs in this state of ignorance
#i'm so interested in how people relate to the gods in this world which is sort of hard to glean from the wiki#thinking abt those notes in the ilmater temple - 'even bhaal has things to teach us 😔🙏' otoh but the absolute cult is 'heresy'#like who decides that? what does heresy /mean/ in this polytheistic setup where each god's cult seems to p much do their own thing#& it seems like even among the good-aligned gods ppl tend to pick one to hitch their wagon to in a pretty committed way#what does polytheism mean to the average joe in this world#i need to know#i need to make a little guy about it#wrapped up shadowheart's quest and....idk man!#just going off the lore as presented in bg3 so far it's set up distrust for deities pretty much across the board#like babe is your new cult better? bc they've got angel imagery? i guess so#the whole problem of evil thing - the dead three shar et al being so extant & active in the world makes the (apparently?) more distant#benevolence of good gods pretty limp by comparison#so much of what draws lay people to them seems to be protection from the very real material threat posed by the evil ones?#& at least SH is in a better place to choose than say. the goblins#vast swathes of people just born under a bad sign in this world#i heard somewhere that if you don't get a god to claim your soul for their afterlife it just kind of withers away in limbo for eternity?#kinda fucked up#some protection racket shit dude#being a mortal in FR like you're just a little guy in a precarious cosmological situation aren't u#to be clear none of this is a criticism i think it's very fun & chewy#rife with cosmic horror potential#bg3#bg3 spoilers#edit: i mean it's a little bit of a criticism in that i don't think the game sells SH's conversion super well#if the intention is just to be like. yay white-hat god good ^_^#but i don't hate the worldbuilding implications if we take the iffiness as read

Kind of cliche but ive always found the Final Moments from majoras mask in clock town really striking . From the combination of how young i was when i first experienced it, to seeing how all the townspeople face death in their own different ways, to the music and the atmosphere. Though, apart from that it'd definitely be pretty much most cutscenes in spirit tracks between link and zelda. They're all too good imo, their dynamic is so fun, plus their relationship is really fleshed out, and the animation is honestly really cute..
ahhh i totally know what u mean !! most of majora’s mask actually took me totally by surprise so the first time i was in clock town for that final hour it was offputting in a way that draws me in Every Time. i am also diehard spirit tracks defender so i totally get it . spirit tracks save me
#if i had to choose a moment from mm Personally it is even more cliche but the quest to get the lover’s mask . oh my god#it was so tedious . and at the end of it i was kindof desperate for another quest that would take up All 3 Days like that#otherwise ummmm ^.^ i went into the final fight with majora with the fierce deity mask and i must say .#it makes the fight Truly trivial but it felt SO GOOD . IT WAS SO COOL#and then spirit tracks .. hmm#either the scene in the tower where zelda is getting up in link’s face (FUNNY ! CUTE !)#orrrr the cutscene Just after the final fight . smth abt it sticks out to me#frogasks#m

Father of Time Chapter 48: Labryn and Holo
It was still early morning, mere moments before dawn, when four deities appeared on the platform by the Ocean Temple in Akkala. An early morning priest froze in shock, then hurried out the temple and up the hill into town. Nocturne gave him little notice; they would not be here long enough to worry about the mortals noticing a gathering. He glanced around, taking in the sight of his Brother's home not shrouded in rain and mist and pushed aside the pang of sadness that plucked at him when he thought of how much Link would enjoy seeing it; summer in Akkala was a much different experience than autumn. He could think of that later though. For now, there was a duty to uphold.
It was not long before Oceanis vaulted out of the salty water before the others, already sweeping Hebra up in an enthusiastic hug. "Sister! You are looking much better! Thank you for hurrying, all of you!" He gasped when he saw Satori and quickly let go of the goddess to wrap his arms around the glowing, blue neck. "Satori, my Brother! Nocturne mentioned he saw you! I am so glad you could come!"
And then he moved on to Aevum, picking her up and spinning her around with enthusiastic glee despite her loud protestations. When she stopped his time and squeezed out of his embrace, he laughed as he shook the effect off and turned towards Nocturne. The embrace between the two was less cheerful, more reserved, and held a feeling of sorrow for the one missing, but Oceanis smiled all the same.
Ooooohhhh POV switch! Bet you weren't expecting that! I'm still a little behind on my writing but managing to keep up this four day schedule! Even if it's more of an afternoon release than a midnight one. Still not too bad!
And my birthday is TWO DAYS AWAY! More FoT content coming out then! I'm really excited about Link and the Deity, not gonna lie.

#i say deity bcs the traveller twins and scaramouche/wanderer also have these type of constellations - ie people ie themselves#like. say what you like but the constellation matching the other gods/vessels/etc does mean she has some for of deity/god connection#im being vague bcs if shes not the /archon/ archon she is a least a minor deity. or like. the way scara was built to house a gnosis (iirc?)#she's conenected to celestia and the archons anyway. in short.#is what i mean#ily furina#this is from the 4.2 stream btw lmao it's her story quest icon#step right up! || 🪄.txt

Magical herbs in myths, and of course, therefore, in fantasy.
Long have there been stories of mystical flowers that imbue you with properties of: strength, cunning, wisdom, immortality or...bringing you back from the brink of death or just even from death itself, so long as you haven't been dead for too long.
Always those pesky terms and condition, eh?
This is the story of the Sanjivani Booti (or the Sanjivani flower). A magical flower that can save you from illness, injury, and of course, death!
We begin in the Ramayama (or Rama's Journey/The Journey of Rama). When Lakshmana is wounded by Ravana's son and nearly killed, Hanuman seeks sagely advice on what to do. The king of the varnas (monkey people) and monkey god himself is tasked with an adventure himself:
He must venture through what we know as the Himalayas to Mount Meru (think of this as the South Asian Mt. Olympus for those unaware of the mythology and need an easy comp).
There he will find the magical Sanjivani booti (flower) with which Lakshmana can be saved.
However, his quest would not be easy, and upon coming to the valley of flowers and the appropriate mountain area, he couldn't identify the flower in need.
So... he did what any badass god of strength and cunning would do. He LIFTED the whole mountain and yeeted off with it.
Interestingly, the mountain he yoted/yote? Off with left a scar and...the assumed mountain range from the stories in real life..bears a curiously similar scar ;)
Dronagiri Parvat - Uttarakhand India.
With his out of the box thinking, Hanuman was able to get back in time with the flower to save Lakshmana.
You don't just get magical flowers growing in your back yard.
You gotta quest for 'em in your epics, gorsh darnit!

Hey friends I have a few asks I haven't gotten back to and I'm sorry for that. Thanks so much for all the nice things ;~;
I just wanna announce any requests you send me may still get done during my downtime, I just won't respond to the ask. I'll still tag requests as such and tag the account who requested. I need to hoard my asks or I will forget. I'll probably respond to request asks after they're in queue if its before I'm officially back to making content regularly :3
i'm currently making gifs when I have time because I just want to and miss it and my PC is one of the last things to get packed. I also have a lot of backlog rn and want to play more TP and WW but cannot allow myself until I'm through the backlog. I'm not trying too hard to fill queues for extended periods, just miss my stupid lil hobby and am getting to it when I can.
My move date is May 30th so sometime in June I'll probably be back to normal activity!
#actually have a few requests i need to work on for this blog but some are quicker for me to make than others based on the games#i need to do master quest as well still which I haven't started yet#well i mean since like 2011 on 3ds or whatever it may have been#totk has been my relax game so i'm still actively playing a bit of it which is why you see the gifs randomly#bless totk and being able to play as the fierce deity fr its everything to me#like had a bad day at work gonna to pick some flowers in totk >:( u kno

I don't think I there has ever been anything more confusing to me than being both a noob Critical Role fan and a noob Forgotten Realms fan and trying to disentangle their respective "Shadowfell" s 🥴💫
#I got to that quest in bg3 with the shadar-kai and was like 'huh they seem cool I'll look them up'#and then saw they were in service to 'the raven queen' and I was like hmm sounds familiar#so I went to to the shadowfell page and saw their list of deities#and I also saw vecna there???? who I could have sworn is at the end of CR campaign 1??#and that the raven queen is actually just a sad crazy woman who failed to achieve godhood and not the matron of death and ravens#so now I'm just like??? confused?? is it supposed to be the same shadowfell or??#bc I know exandria and toril are different settings and different histories#and now I'm wondering are goddesses like Shar in Exandria? and what about Exandrian drow? how can their be drow if there is no Lolth?#and unsurprisingly every online source is super unhelpful rip#if anyone is a veteran CR fan who could clarify I'd appreciate it lol#bc my head hurts lol#marie speaks
