So after all 9 episodes and a couple of hours to dissect all the evidence, I believe that “Raising Dion” has a lot untapped potential beneath its glaring instability. Outside of it’s action scenes being semi-effective, the overall mystery elements being well-teased even if they aren’t executed well and it’s episodic structure fluctuating from average to pretty sound, it’s acting is impressive specifically from its main lead, it’s dramatic moments are really convincing, it’s direction, while conventional, does give the leeway for some neat ideas and it does touch up some challenging themes around being overbooked as a single mother, discipline and self-control. While it’s easy to dissect what the show gets right, it’s flaws however are just as noticeable. It’s special effects are dodgy, most of the characters even the leads don’t feel believable or fleshed out, the family drama mixing in with the superhero theatrics just didn’t have a concrete flow even with a consistent tone and it lacks heavily in originality, for this show isn’t subtle at all at trying to mask itself as Stranger Things 2.0, which in turn makes many of its memorable moments all too familiar. Seriously, I haven’t even watched every episode of every season of Stranger Things and even I KNOW it wants to be Stranger Things! I can definitely see how these problems could carry over into the second season and squander the shows content of quality but I can also see how their ideas can be improved or tweaked upon to make this show a potential Netflix staple for the new generation.
