hihiii thank you for the ask!! this batch was kind of fun to do (warning this one might get long)

8. what is your self insert’s orientation?

Truth be told, Sol has a bit of a hard time with labels, or at least used to. It took them a good while to be comfortable in their identity, and a lot of the time they put off even thinking about it due to feeling like they already had so much on their plate LOL. For orientation, they’d never felt connected to any label like bisexual or pansexual and etc. They identified as different ones growing up but now as an adult, they don’t really care I guess you could say, and they’re much happier just calling themselves Queer. Sol likes who they like, no matter the gender and that’s just how it is :3. And they are also Ace, which took them way longer to figure out, but they feel really content in that aspect of their identity.

For gender identity which I felt is also important to mention.. If they were a char in the show I’d want their gender to be like part of this fun bit where it’s never confirmed or anything and so a lot of the other characters often have this moment where they wonder… is that a pretty guy or a handsome girl? Yk, being confusing for funnies, but they just “are”. Like they aren’t a gender, they’re just Sol LMFAOO. And in the non gag anime way, their gender identity is a little more complicated. To strangers and the public eye, they’re comfortable with being seen as a man , even tho though don’t feel like one or identify as one, at least not fully. It’ll always be confusing for them, maybe never fully clear, but as long as they’re happy and comfortable presenting in whatever way they want, the label doesn’t really matter to them in the long run.. so Non binary is what feels right for now. (Fun Sol fact.. they’ve also had top surgery!)

9. who are your self insert’s closest friends?

I lovee this question.. I’ve mentioned them before, but in Sols story their closest friends before they grow close with karamatsu and later the res of the matsunos, their closest friends are Beck and Mimi :D my friends ocs!

I had to draw them for this one bc I love them so much. Sol meets Mimi at their convenience store job almost immediately after moving to Japan, and spending almost every day together leads to them quickly clicking and becoming friends, soon beginning to hang out outside of work … and becoming even closer when Sol confides in Mimi about their whole situation with their new painful blue friend that starts slowly snowballing into something bigger…. It takes a little while longer for Sol to become friends with Beck, since Beck actually meets Mimi first through his new friend Jyushimatsu, who is also friends with Mimi! Along with Ichimatsu and Todomatsu :P my friend Otter only recently made Beck so there’s stuff we’re still figuring out story wise, but rest assured they all get into silly antics together and get to hear Sol ramble on and on while they yell at them to open their eyes and accept there’s something that changed and is definitely going on with them and their friend.. I have this really funny lore bit with Mimi and the three youngest matsus that want to post about sometime soon.. but we shall see

Last but not least, 15. how does your self insert play a role in the plot of the story? do they help directly defeat the villain, support the heroes, etc.?

Sol was never meant to play any sort of role in the story, and I’d still say that they barely add anything to canon at all.. but im not sure how to explain. Sol was always meant to be a background character, but like in a literal sense. Show wise. They weren’t supposed to have a name, or friends or a past, they were just supposed to exist in the background and appear every once in a while. Even after they arrived in Japan. That was until they met the sextuplets, and it’s like they were suddenly aware. Like those silly posts you see about people talking about when they gain consciousness LOL, but literally. They were sort of shoved into this whole new world with new BIG overwhelming feelings and memories, almost as if a life had materialized from thin air, and one that had not treated them kindly in the past.

They still don’t play any sort of role in the canon universe, but something definitely changed. A change that they were not ready for, but became grateful for.. in the long run.

What was hikaru's transition experience in the corps? How did they take his coming out (if that happened)? How easy was it for him to get care (you said shinobu did his top surgery)?

This is a great question! Unfortunately Hikaru being trans is one of the most historically inaccurate parts of his story, if not medically, then definitely socially. I use a lot more modern methods and language because I wanted Hikaru to be trans similarly to how I am. It’s my canon-accurate Achilles Heel 😭

Don’t get me wrong, trans people definitely existed back in the Taisho period!! We’ve always been here, but back then we were recorded a little differently, generally regarded as “women in men’s clothing”, et cetera. I will never deny their existence, and Hikaru being modern with his gender expression isn’t meant as erasure or denial to them, but as an expression of myself via a fictional character. Their existence is real, and valid, and they are no less trans than Hikaru- at the end of the day, he’s my silly little self insert, and I wanted to write his experiences based off of mine. If the focus of Hikaru’s story was his gender journey, I would put more emphasis on the time period and the difficulties surrounding being trans in the Taisho period, but the themes surrounding Blazing Heart’s Rhapsody are acceptance and solace found within family, and love in spite of war. This isn’t a story about trans people- Hikaru just happens to be trans ☺️

Hikaru realized he was a boy very very young, (probably around 6 or 7) and his father, Hiroki, encouraged him to live in whatever fashion made him feel most comfortable. Because Hikaru grew up in the woods with only his father and little brothers, he was never really socialized as a woman or a man- he was just Hikaru, the oldest Eritora child. He likely hit puberty while living on his own in the Sumitomo Forest, but didn’t experience dysphoria until he was found by the Kochos when he was 16. When he was brought into the Corps, Hikaru experienced gender norms full-force for the first time. It wasn’t really that they didn’t support Hikaru being trans, it was more that he didn’t fit. He was Different, and that made him Othered. For the first time, Hikaru was struggling with where he belonged, and that was when he started to really learn the societal importance placed on gender roles. Additionally, Hikaru is neurodivergent, so these norms never made much sense to him logically in the first place. So while he never really had to come out, he did have to fit in, which was difficult for him to navigate. He talked to Shinobu, who in all her medical expertise, gave him the best advice she could. She was the one who helped him hormonally transition, (if she can inject herself with 700x the lethal dose of wisteria without fucking poisoning herself, she can probably make Hikaru’s testosterone. She’s iconic like that I think.) and ultimately it was Shinobu who helped Hikaru figure out where he stood in terms of gender identity. Hikaru is a self-made man in every sense of the phrase, but he couldn’t have done it without the help of those around him.

As for top surgery, I don’t really have a canon-friendly justification for that. Shinobu’s not a plastic surgeon, she’s probably done minor surgeries before, but never anything to the level of gender-affirming surgery. I feel like she’d DIY that shit tbh. She could pull it off. I’d let her do my top surgery. Shinobu says trans rights 🗣️

I think the biggest thing that pushed me out of radfem identity (which looking back is a good thing, 5 years on T and 2.5 years post top op, planning for bottom op soon) is the fact that they don’t seem to care I was SAed by a woman. No radfem has ever been sympathetic to my story of being saed to be “turned back into a lesbian” by someone who was drunk on radfem rhetoric and wanted to “save me from becoming a man” when I was questioning my gender. Radfem a don’t want to allow or acknowledge my AMAB friends who have both been SAed, one also by a cis woman who bragged about it because the definition of rape was forced penile in vaginal penetration. No radfem has ever given us sympathy, no radfem has treated us with compassion or given us resources, so why the fuck should we listen to you? Why the fuck should you believe that you’re against SA when I’ve had radfems tell me I am lying about my experiences and refused to acknowledge them? Why should we believe you’re really fighting for all people you see as woman (afab people) when you don’t talk about the disproportionately higher rates of sexual assault against trans men than cis women? TLDR on our HRT journey (nearly 4 years now), very glad that we may be ending the chapter of our body’s life similar to how Phase 1 Arcee felt about her body lmao and moving on to feeling more euphoric with our organic frame (it is what is, we love it even though even our oldest headmate/our body desires metal, guess making shapes EVA foam will help compensate someday on occasions that would feel safe to do so):

Okay so, four days in on finasteride with estradiol (having given finasteride enough time to bond with our body tissue, takes four to five days) after switching out of spironolactone with estradiol (which we were on four almost four years) and personally;

finasteride is fucking fantastic so far:

- feel much more cogent/less brain fog (we’re told this is due to being more hydrated)

- it’s easier to plan doing things and then to do them

- body feels less unhinged/off-kilter

- sensation actually feels better/more intense, it’s easier to appreciate and immerse in touch and thus we don’t crave intimate relief as often, all of which has helped with our health a lot

Hopefully whatever “masculinizing” traits might resurface due to finasteride interfering with dihydrotestosterone instead of testosterone like spiro does won‘t be a bother, but from what we’ve seen/read/heard from folks a lot of people’s experience of it is okay. Finasteride is apparently recommended for folks who tend to get/are sensitive to side effects from medications (we definitely are).

For us personally, pre-HRT testosterone was no fun, it left us rather angsty and having difficulty with feeling a sense of composure, apart from the dysphoria, so spiro with estradiol was a remarkable improvement in all regards. Just with various psychological experiences piling up in the last three years on top of stuff from the rest of our life, spiro no longer felt tenable, so we had to switch to something else, and weren’t willing to take gender stuff by needle for personal reasons. Interestingly; a trans man we used to work with said that estrogen before HRT also left him feeling off-kilter in the head, and that taking HRT helped clear things up. This is just an experience some gender expansive folks have we suppose. :3

So yeah, here’s to the future! Whatever happens to our psyche for other reasons aside, we’ll probably be writing and doing art more consistently. We have some more thoughts about spiro and Arcee in regards to canon below:

To some degree though (this is going to be a very unhinged artist take, but more than anything it’s us processing what we went through), we’re glad we did spiro because of the effects it had we wanted that will carry over, and also because it did give our non-Arcee headmates and bodily experience personal insight into how much of a pain the aft sensory side effects and brain fog especially from something that was supposed to give euphoria is.

Given- we knew what many of the side effects could be going in, our gender affirmation providers did their best to inform us and we are deeply appreciative of how they’ve helped out all these years including by being supportive of our xenogender stuff and plurality when we finally felt comfortable talking about it. And, we know that having contracted the original strain of Covid in early 2020 could have left us with long covid which also can cause brain issues, and then there’s all the additional baggage of our psyche from how our brain is wired and living in the world, which we’ve done our best to compensate for with other medications, learning wisdom techniques from dialectical behavioral therapy and philosophy and various orgs and studies and contacts and experiences in life, seeing a therapist as needed, and so on.

So, it’s not as if it was just spiro, just as for IDW1 Arcee, it wasn’t just her surgery; it was also everything else going on in her life that was so hard, and she eventually found a way to reconstruct her life and be happy, just as we continue to attempt to do, appreciating happiness when it does come our way. This is all to say that there’s always hope; even if spiro had been the only thing in the world at the time, we would have clawed onwards, we wouldn’t be as happy but we would still try, for all the love we are lucky to have and make.

Some trans Max hcs because I have soiled my brain

Max has a severe phobia of needles, so obviously Laura, a literal to-be vet, does his t-shots for him and it’s so very... “Quit squirming, Max”  “I’m sorry can you just get it over with?” “I can’t get it over with if you don’t sit still” “Well I’m sorry b- OW! A little warning next time?”

If Laura isn’t available during their weeks at camp (i.e. she’s busy doing her job or something) Max gets Dylan to do them for him which is...just has nightmarish

Dylan repeatedly counts down but always does it at a random number so Max never knows when it’s coming, but Dylan isn’t as worried about precision as Laura so he doesn’t worry as much about Max squirming

Max got top surgery as a 18th birthday gift; his parents, Laura, and her parents all chipped in for the costs. He was very excited for the first summer with his scars as well, like insanely

One of the campers obviously asked about said scars but before he could reply, Dylan jumped in with some fake as hell story about Max fighting off a bear with his bare hands

Max didn’t even argue, just flatly agreed that’s what happened thinking the kids wouldn’t believe it until a few days later when he discovers a lot of the little kids believed it and started asking him about the fight and asking if he could beat Jacob in a fight too if he was strong enough to fight a bear

You can pry childhood friends/high school sweethearts Laura/Max from my cold dead hands so...Laura’s known him since long before his transition. She was a little confused and caught off guard when he came out, but they’ve always been there for each other so what else was she supposed to do? She goes super research mode and reads everything she can online from like medical and psychology articles to real life posts and blogs and books and stuff about trans people because she wants to be there for Max and understand what he’s dealing with and who he is as much as she can

She texts Max in the middle of the night asking about things he hasn’t even considered yet or about famous people he hasn’t heard of

She’s a little much when it comes to these things and her support and it throws Max off sometimes just how much she can be, but it means a lot to him that she cares this much and it gives him a really sturdy support system and someone to help him figure things out alongside him

It was definitely Laura’s idea to set up that first appointment for top surgery for his bday and even if she personally may not be loaded with cash, she wanted to chip in whatever she could into paying for it all

Laura probably also helped him pick a name, lotta baby name websites or pointing out names in movies or shows

Max was more or less a joke-y suggestion, but Max himself was also pretty confident Maximus from Gladiator was based on a real roman general and thought it was badass and cool

They had a whole discussion similar to the columbus one at the start of the game about Laura trying to explain that Maximus wasn’t a real person but Max swearing he was

Today, after many years of self-discovery and embarking on the journey of transition I’ll finally be getting top surgery. All things considered, its kind of scary, nerve racking, but also very exciting and something I’ve been working towards for a couple years now. A lot of people have offered a lot of support and I couldn’t be more grateful. It’s been an interesting few years, but I’m happy that I will be getting one step closer to being me. It’s a good kind of feeling overall, but I wanted to give a thanks to everyone who’s gotten me this far.

@enambris​ for always being a pillar of support whenever I’m uncertain about something or need advice or guidance. I can depend on you for that with ease and have always been someone I can depend on for anything. The years we’ve known each other have been long and arduous at times but were made all the easier knowing I had you at my side to get through them. You’re basically a sister at this point, and I adore you. Our FC was one of the first places I came out to, and everyone was so great about using new pronouns and my new name.

@glowinggunmetal - for also being helpful and cheering me on behind the scenes. I always appreciate chatting with you when I get the chance and despite some ups and downs, you’ve always been a great friend. Our writing is always interesting and dynamic, full of many layers, and loaded with development. I also think you’re just a cool person in general and I’m glad to know you.

@lavender-hemlock - for being such a kind and gentle presence in my life. You always take time to check on me, shoot me some music, or somehow, whenever I’m feeling uncertain about myself or other people, you always sweep in and make me feel better. Like you sense it or something. You’re someone who keeps me calm, grounded, and even and I can’t thank you enough for that. I never have to question where I stand with you, and you make sure I always feel welcome even though you’ve got a lot on your plate. Certainly one of my besties. I can’t wait to start writing again when you kick your college’s ass, and get your degree.

@waywardmarmot - I adore you and the RP shenanigans we get up to. Talking to you is always nice and I like the good nights and good mornings you go out of your way to give to me. I’ve yet to regret a single night of staying up super late just so we can write with our incredibly opposite sleep schedules. I can talk about whatever and not feel judged, and all the people you’ve introduced me to have also been equally supportive.

@luck-and-larceny​ - Yes! You come and go a lot! Yet, I adore all the times you stop in to check on me, educate me, or talk to me/introduce me to something new. It makes all our interactions feel all the more special. We met under some odd circumstances, yet I’m glad I walked away from those things with a new friend who’s kind, considerate, and clever. You’ve helped me through some very low moments, and also some shaky ones, and even now you’ve been thoughtful about my surgery. Words can’t express how nice you are and I love the chances I get to write with you.

And gosh there’s been so many more who are just accepting and helpful, and while I wish I could name them all, it’d be an even longer list and we’d be here all day. You’ve all been the battery that keeps me going, and let me tell you, there were days I definitely needed it. So thank you, I love you all, and I will be back at some point when I’m not super drugged up and all that jazz.

How do you think a yautja would think of a trans s/o?

I think it depends on the Yautja, though I don't believe any of them would have anything negative to say. I personally believe gender isn't really a thing for them like it is for us. I think there are many trans Yautja! [Though they may have a different word and definition for it, being that they are a completely different race.]

Some may be highly curious and interested, like Mohtiat or Gaacheeirp would be- loads of questions and fascinated with you. They strive for the gain of knowledge, after all. Would be highly confused if you were nervous about telling them.

To them, this is an amazing occasion, something to be celebrated.

"Why are you nervous, little one?"

You would explain that back on your planet, there were lots of people who hated the trans community.

And they will scoff and huff; oomans can be amazing, but they can also be so utterly stupid.

"Why do they care? It is not their flesh, it is not their business?"

"Tell that to them," you would say.

They will respect your boundaries to a T, but expect a lot of questions and compliments- the more you speak of your experiences, the more proud of you they become.

You are one of the strongest, incredible humans they know.

They would 100% take you out to shop for fabrics and clothing that make you feel more like you, don't worry about the price, just pick up whatever catches your eye and its yours.

Like Me'Ki-Ta or Thaidta, some would immediately accept this without any curiousity at all. You are a human, and chances are you're their human, you make your own reality and they respect that beyond words.

They will memorize everything one of your needs and cater to them without you even knowing.

Your binder breaks or tears in battle? no worries, they have a backup ready. You run out of perscribed hormones? they have the best in the market already on hand.

They are your shoulder to cry on and the extra ears to listen to your troubles. Ultimate validator, will assure you in every instance of doubt that you are who you feel, who you say you are.

Does certain makeup/clothing make you happy? You have an entire room dedicated to that alone. Only the best for their human.

Then there is Ta'thiir and Thakou. AGRESSIVELY supportive. You want top/bottom surgery? you have an appointment with the galaxy's best surgeon the very next day. Did they threaten the entire staff to put you at the top of the list? Yes, but they'll refuse to admit it if you asked.

Will find out what compliments you like the most and write it down, memorize it, and call you those constantly, if they hear your deadname hit the air they'll destroy the lungs that birthed it.

Are you feelings dysphoric? They will do anything and everything to comfort you. Whether thats lying down and cuddling you and purring up a storm, or suiting you up in battle armor to go hunt down some unlucky beast- they've got you covered.

All Yautja have something in common- should anyone misgender you, call you names or be transphobic on any level towards you, your respective Yautja will see to it that they never speak again. Or walk. Or blink.

after coming out he immediately drops your dead name and uses your preferred pronouns on the spot. he cares a lot and wants you to know that he supports you endlessly

if somebody says something rude to you armin will try to passive aggressively educate them because that’s his boyfriend they’re disrespecting 🤬

if you’re post op and are comfortable with being shirtless around him, armin might offer to paint on your chest and scars. it’s a huge part of his love language and he wants to show you that your body is beautiful no matter what it’s been through. flowers, landscapes, constellations... anything that he thinks is beautiful

with that being said his favorite flowers are cornflowers so expect a lot of those being painted on your skin

don’t even worry about anyone purposely misgendering you or saying something disrespectful, jean will literally beat them up no hesitation

he’s not very good at comforting someone but he sure does try. awkward pats on the backs calling you handsome and reaffirming your gender identity will probably be the method

seems like the kind of person to not give a shit what your gender is. if he likes you and you like him, why should it matter? he doesn’t mind at all is what I’m basically saying

however don’t let that fool you. he’s very gentle and never pushes your boundaries. he’s also going to throw major hands with anyone who’s being transphobic 🙄

while he does seem to give off the attitude that he doesn’t care about anything he does care immensely about you and your mental health. he’s open 24/7 if you ever want to vent to him, he’ll listen with no complaints and be very thoughtful.

he’s surprisingly accommodating for you. obviously being levi’s anything is a difficult task since he’s so closed off to people in general but if he really trusts you then you’ve definitely earned it and you two are inseparable

his love language is using lots of positive affirmations and validating words like “handsome”

Hange

we already know that hange is going to be over enthusiastic about you and your transition, especially if you decide to medically transition. they’re gonna want to know everything about it and always tag along to your bloodwork tests

they’re also hands down the best shopping buddy, they’ll always offer to take you to whatever store you want and buy you whatever clothes you want

if somebody were to say something rude about you or them hange wouldn’t even bother trying to explain they’d just go straight to yelling profanities because “you can’t help stupid” 🙄

if / when you get top surgery they’ll be babying you through the entire recovery process; making sure you took your meds, making sure you have enough blankets, making sure you’re never hungry or thirsty. it’s adorable but can get just a little obnoxious after a bit LMAO

if you aren’t publicly out and don’t want other people to know quite yet, rest assured that it’s completely safe with hange. they may be a loudmouth but they know that this is a level of trust that can never be betrayed. they refer to it as “confidential”

we have another himbo here that doesn’t know much about it but he sure does try his best to learn everything he should know so that he doesn’t accidentally say something insensitive

eventually he becomes well versed in vocabulary and quickly realizes that, yes, he is in fact gay for being attracted to you

he asks a lot of questions but stammers and stutters and apologizes as he expresses them. a lot of his questions are asking for clarification on things or specifics for how he can best accommodate your preferences. what’s okay to say in public? how do you prefer to be addressed? he sweats bullets honestly

he’s the most willing to go to pride events because we already know he’s a flaming homosexual and is willing to be loud about it, you’re his boyfriend and he’s gonna be proud of it

he’s gonna validate you with small mocking compliments like “ugh, stop being so damn handsome, I can’t even look at you!”

Bertholdt

when you came out to him he could tell that you were visibly nervous, so he immediately pointed out that it’s absurd to think he would be uncomfortable with it. he’s supportive all the way with whatever you decide to do and will be there for guidance if you ever need it.

he always offers you his clothes because naturally they’re probably very baggy compared to your normal size so a lot of your closet is just sweaters that you’re borrowing from him but he doesn’t mind because he thinks you look adorable in them 💗

I think he’s sort of touchy but it’s not something you see from him much in public, only in private. every day he would ask what you’re okay with, especially if you’re particularly dysphoric. he also checks in through the day to see if anything has changed

if you’re post op and comfortable with being shirtless he would like to gently trace your scars and tell you affirming things about how your body is beautiful, your scars don’t define you if you don’t want them to, etc

he’s very gentle and considerate and will never press you for details that you aren’t comfortable sharing or push any boundaries whatsoever

she acts like she doesn’t care very much but in fact she’s very grateful that you had enough trust in her for you to feel safe coming out to her. she doesn’t think a lot of people trust her but once you told her this fact she felt.... appreciated

she already knows a bit about gender stuff (porco is a trans guy too, so she had to deal with him when he was going through his transition as well) so you can take it easy and not have to worry about explaining things to her very often

she always reminds you to take your hormones or any medication you need, she’s very thoughtful and probably remembers your schedule better than you do LMAO you better take care of yourself or she’s coming for you

she says a lot of things like “handsome” and “my boyfriend” completely on purpose because that little flush on your face you get when she does is always worth seeing

if you’re okay with it, she’s very physically affectionate and will gently touch your chest or kiss your scars, just making sure that you know you’re appreciated in her eyes no matter what anyone else thinks about you.
