Top 5 obscure light vintage novels! (Not sure if my previous ask got eaten, but also curious about this one specifically)
The strictest definition of what I consider "obscure light vintage novels" requires a book to meet a lot of criteria:
Published before 1960
Not recommended to me by anyone I know personally (including on tumblr)
Doesn't have a fancy Oxford-Classics-type edition with an introduction. (And none of the author's other books are well-known enough to have one)
Has a realistic setting
Ideally written by a woman or centered around a female main character
Which means that very few books fit this list. But of those few, here are my top five.
Desire by Una Silberrad: Flawed but fascinating Edwardian novel about an eccentric heiress who meets a soulful author and eventually winds up working for him when she loses her money and he inherits his father's pottery business. Fascinating characters, amazing romance, lots of interesting themes. I'm also going to count the author's other novels in this category, because she's come to epitomize "obscure light classic" for me. The Good Comrade is a much frothier novel with some great characters, and Curayl is highly flawed, but its silver-tongued hero lives rent-free in my head.
The Ark by Margot Benary-Isbert: I finished this book less than twenty-four hours ago (so I could include it on this list). It's a 1953 German novel set in 1947, about a refugee family building a home after the end of the war. It reads like, if you can believe it, a cozy post-apocalyptic novel. These people are living through some terrible things, but they make the best of things and manage to find joy. It's chock-full of fascinating details about life in post-war Germany, and reminds you that the people on that side of the war were human too, losing people and places they loved, and doing their best to live in terrible times. There are some superstitious elements later on that I wasn't crazy about, but otherwise I adored this story.
The Romance of a Shop by Amy Levy: Novel from the 1880s about four sisters who open a photography studio to support themselves after their father's death. Extremely underwritten (one of the girls meets an old flame and marries him between chapters), but a very easy, pleasant read with interesting historical details, and some nice sisterly relationships that remind me just a bit of Little Women meets Oscar Wilde.
The Heir of Redclyffe and Countess Kate by Charlotte Mary Yonge: Books by one of the bestselling authors of the Victorian age who's completely forgotten today. Both get too preachy at times, but make up for it by having amazing characters. The first one is a family saga about cousins caught up in an old feud, and the second is like if Anne Shirley suddenly found out she was a countess.
The Rosary by Florence Barclay: The bestselling novel of, like, 1920. It gets very melodramatic, but I was also surprised at how grounded and witty the characters were. I remember very little about it, but I have fond memories of the reading experience, and it earns a place on this list because when I want to find an "obscure vintage light novel", on some level I'm thinking I want to find a book like this.
I know you didn't ask, but I find myself wanting to list five novels that don't quite meet the strict criteria above, but are close enough that I want to highlight them.
The Dean's Watch and The Rosemary Tree by Elizabeth Goudge: Goudge isn't exactly obscure in this section of tumblr (which is why I heard of her in the first place), but she's obscure enough that a lot of her books are out-of-print or otherwise hard to get, and these two in particular are among the best books I've ever read.
The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery: Montgomery is extremely well-known, and this book has an ever-growing and very devoted cult following, so it's not exactly obscure, but it's much less well-known than most of her other books. A deep cut, if you will. It fits perfectly within the light vintage novel category, and has long been one of my favorite novels of all time.
Lady Audley's Secret by Mary Elizabeth Braddon: It's got an Oxford Classics (or similar imprint) edition, and is well-known as one of the very first sensation novels, but it's not exactly known among people who don't deep-dive into Victorian literature. I read this last month and loved it. It's a cozy sensation novel with an amazing main character, great atmosphere, and a plot that manages to grip you even while not much happens.
Mrs. Miniver by Jan Struther: It's not exactly obscure if it has a movie adaptation, but from what I know, the movie basically ignores the book, which isn't that well-known today. Charming slice-of-life from the very early days of WWII England.
Helen by Maria Edgeworth: Not exactly beloved, and Edgeworth isn't exactly obscure, but this is a lesser-known novel that fits well within this category. The first half had some moments that were so dull I considered not finishing, but the second half was gripping enough that I can mention it as a nice, obscure surprise of a book.
#answered asks#books#it turns out there were several books i wanted to feature in the second list#that weren't old enough to feature under my very generous definition of 'classic'#the kitchen madonna is from 1967#i was *sure* the letzenstein chronicles were a mid-century series that had gone out of print and was republished by bethlehem books#only to find that they were *first* published in 1997#i considered mentioning 'daddy-long-legs' and 'dear enemy' as charming obscure light vintage novels despite their severe ick factors#but it turns out that i couldn't forgive the eugenics or the grooming

marauders era characters and their favorite movies
if they lived in the muggle world circa 2024
remus: little miss sunshine brutal and disturbingly human, but intertwined with themes of love, family, support, and healing
james: talladega nights the theme of this movie is that friendship is magic. you know james was saying "if you're not first, you're last" for years after seeing this movie. also he tried to create a shake-and-bake thing with sirius
sirius: howl's moving castle "that howl is so fucking hot" "he literally just looks like you" "exactly" sirius sees himself as this main love interest (howl) and he sees remus as sophie, especially when she's an old woman that howl has to take care of. all he wants to do is take care of remus
peter: bridge to terabithia peter seems like the kind of person to find stories of tragical childhood friendships really compelling. he also loves josh hutcherson (who doesn't)
regulus: the secret life of walter mitty he relates to the main character - a man who is controlled and meticulous but longs to go on an adventure. he also wishes that sirius would pull him out of his monotonous life and into the unknowable but with complete acceptance of who he is.
lily: little women in the way that i feel like i've been shot every time i watch a movie involving complicated mother/daughter relationships, lily would be deeply compelled by stories about sisterhood. especially jo and amy who always feel second to each other
mary: princess mononoke she would relate to the main character and be very enthralled by ashitaka. definitely a comfort watch for her.
marlene: raising arizona or zoolander she loves absurdist comedies with lovable and endearing characters. she is also low-key attracted to nick cage when he was young, but don't tell anyone, it's a secret.
dorcas: arrival or parasite dorcas has unequivocally good movie tastes. she likes high concept stories with heavy thematic writing and devastating plots. she talks about them in detail for weeks afterward
pandora: midsommar and pan's labyrinth she loves movies with comically intense violence. she finds high control groups fascinating. she definitely loves pan's labyrinth because of the freaky monsters and the fact that it sounds like it could belong to her
xenophilius: the twilight saga he knows every detail and loves to examine the story from all sides. he and pandora bond over the fact that carlisle is a joseph smith archetype.
evan: deadpool evan sees deadpool as barty and loves the character because of it. he is also envious of the characters freedom to be himself
barty: the mummy he just thinks that everyone in this movie is really fucking hot
snape: pride and prejudice (2005) finds it super romantic and loves the way characters talk and deliver lines. he listens to the soundtrack as background music while he works.
frank longbottom: spiderman (no way home) no one was more excited than he was when the three spiderman characters interacted. he cried a lot when watching this movie
alice: narnia it was her sexual awakening ;)
narcissa: glass onion she loves a who-done-it story, she reads mystery novels all the time and she thought this one was the most exciting
bellatrix: barbarian or bones and all she watches bones and all like "when is it my turn to be happy?" and she watches barbarian like "what is it like to have a mother who loves you?" everyone thinks she's crazy
lucius: dune or the king he sees himself as the king. that scene where robert pattinson's character is slipping around in the mud and timmy's character is standing there unbothered - that's how lucius pictures himself and arthur weasley. he also thinks of his own family when he watches dune
also this came from a question that @wolfpadx asked in the discord and i just had to elaborate on my thoughts.

Cherry Magic / 30-sai made Doutei dato Mahoutsukai ni nareru rashii Episode 1
Overall Score so far: 8/10
Mainly because Kiyoshi Adachi knows he is in a BL, and is very aware of what might happen to him, and the short hand title is fucking hilarious. Cherry Magic. Cherri Maho. Man I love Japanese.
Also GOOD CROWS ABOVE THIS ANIME IS GENRE-SAVVY. It knows exactly what it's doing, and feels like it's going to deliver what it promises. A wholesome lovey dovey little story.
The whole 1st episode almost feels self contained in a way that will definitely let you know if this show is for you or not. Capybara pointed out that this seems to be a common recent trend with anime for their first episodes. We saw it in Dr. Elise, Frieren, and Dungeon Meshi kind of felt that way too.
My first impression that might not make sense to some people is that this is a toned down Doppo and Hifumi from Matenrou/Hypnosis Mic.
Also, WE'VE GOT TWO POWERHOUSE VOICE ACTORS HERE!!
Adachi is being voiced by the lovely deadpan of Kobayashi, Chiaki - His other roles I know being Langa from SK∞, Gabimaru!! (my beloved) from Jigokuraku/Hell's Paradise, and Mash!! from MASHLE, also this season! I haven't seen Vinland Saga yet, but other might know him as Askeladd! Kobayashi-san has a very particular voice that doesn't fluctuate much, but he knows when to show emotion that gives a good impact. Quote from Capybara - "They picked this guy for his dead pan, but can he emote? Oh, he's Langa from sk8, oh yeah, he can emote."
Kurosawa is voiced by Suzuki, Ryouta a super memorable voice! - Ryusui from Dr. Stone, Yuu ishikami from Kaguya Sama, BISCO!!! FROM SABIKU BISCO!!! That is some RANGE right there! Loud and Prideful, Quiet and Dark, and then a Screamy Boy. This is a younger VA who has had some great starting roles, and has already become a memorable and impactful voice, making this a very good match up!
Anyways, nerding out about voice actors aside, Episode 1 spoilers below!
At first it seems like we're going to get the standard tropes that come with the BL(Boys Love)/Yaoi Genre...
Adachi is ON HIS GUARD and KNOWS THE TROPES.
But the show immediately spins those very same tropes on their head! It's great!! It's been so long since I watched a BL, and despite knowing that the genre in manga form has mostly moved away from a lot of the dub-con tropes (unless you're looking for it of course), it's lovely to see something that actually feels like a proper and semi-realistic romance.
Kurosawa seems like a super sweet dude who's ALSO aware this is a BL, but also that gay guys don't just exist everywhere and that the chance of his crush returning his affection is low.
But. There is no way Adachi is straight. He's absolutely either bi, and/or gay + somewhere on the ace-spec (demi?) depending on how things play out from here.
I bet Adachi stumbled into reading a BL manga (or two or three or) at some point in his younger years, and it had more of an impact on his psyche than he remembers, lmao.
His fascination with knowing Kurosawa has a crush on him is adorable, and he's absolute confusion at stumbling across the other man's fantasies is hilarious.
The tension between them is beautiful when Adachi is pretending to sleep, and we all KNOW Kurosawa is thinking of his sleeping face and then playing it off as just grabbing his phone. I repeat, there is NO WAY Adachi is straight, lmao.
In response to this rhetorical question, No and Yes. If Adachi was the woman, saying yes would imply that she was aware she was being asked to have sex and giving consent (at least by Japanese standards I ASSUME? I've never been in this situation). And if Kurosawa was the woman, that is one very forward and direct lady who is absolutely Down To Fuck (Again, by Japanese standards afaik).
God, then they go out for yakiniku/Korean bbq the next day, and he finds himself enjoying the other man's company and wishing they could be friends, only to brush up again him and remember this man is in love with him. Adachi, you precious child, this is why you're so lovable. The immediate regret for taking the other man's feelings so lightly and not knowing what to do as he runs away is heart wrenching and OF COURSE THE EPISODE ENDS THERE.
It's a running theme that Adachi is worried about other's opinions and doesn't know how to rely on other, which tends to be a negative, but in this case, he's so conscientious of hurting Kurosawa by taking his feelings lightly. Even though he ends up hurting him anyways, I see this as a favorable take on the typical people-pleaser type character.
I'm not really looking to the implied trope of "Best Friend who also has a crush and claims to know him best" in the next episode, but since everything else has been subverted, I'm hoping that will get subverted too? Especially knowing that Best Friend-kun is in the secondary pairing from the PVs.
I WANT TO BINGE THIS. THIS IS GOING TO BE SO DAMN CUTE.
The HypMic Reference:
Adachi is a Toned Down Doppo, who is an over worked businessman at a black company who might as well be Canadian for how often he says sorry, but goes into Berserker mode and absolutely destroys his opponents when pushed too far or his partners are hurt, and is Hifumi's emotion support human.
Kurosawa is a super Toned Down Hifumi, who is the #1 host at a club in Shinjuku and has a split personality of the perfect princely boyfriend, and a charai/flashy and "it'll be fine lol" personality, who is basically a housewife for Doppo and is also Doppo's emotional support human.
There aren't THAT many connection points between the two, but still, I like the comparison, aha.
Anyways, My Hopes For This Anime, having NOT read the manga and not wanting spoilers, are that these two get together by half way through the season and then we get the "newly dating" stages of their relationship, and various mishaps that only serve to strengthen their relationship. They seem like a very good couple and it would be a waste for them to not get together.
If they don't get together until episode 12, I will be so blue balled that I will have to drop it if only to get the circulation in my brain back.
Hype for more!
ep2 ep3 ep4 ep5 ep6 <- these will eventually become links

On the surface, “A Man for All Seasons” is one of those stuffy British costume dramas from the 1960s, but I have such a soft spot for it. I first watched it when I got obsessed with the English Reformation when I was taking AP Euro. My first viewing happened to coincide with a prolonged, public saga my family was embroiled in with our Archdiocese at the time, so Thomas More being held up as an ultimate example of integrity in the Catholic Church was oddly reassuring. The irony also isn’t lost on me that the Church screwed over my family while the movie is about a man standing up for it. NB: For what it’s worth, the way the Church’s fucked over my family during this time was NOT, for a change, related to child sexual abuse.
I claimed to love the movie after my first watch. That was a huge fucking lie. There were a couple good parts but I found it stodgy and pretentious. Despite that judgment, the dialogue contained several nuggets that really resonated with me during that year from hell when we going up against the Church. It’s these jewels (as well as my since-continued fascination with the English Reformation) that motivated me watch it again and again over the next couple of years whenever it was on TCM.
In a script (and play) of absolute gems, the most famous line is probably More’s response to Rich’s perjured allegation against him: “It profits a man nothing to give his soul for the whole world. But for Wales?” That’s the line i really responded to after my first viewing. My family were being victimized by people flooding the Archdiocese with cash and the Archdiocese was doing their bidding for that money. For the Arch, my family was Wales.
However, I now find myself find myself drawn to More’s hypothetical defense of the Devil after his son-in-law suggests that every law should be cast aside to go after him. More vigorously responds (I’m leaving some stuff out here):
And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned 'round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country is planted thick with laws…Man's laws, not God's! And if you cut them down…do you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I'd give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety's sake!
I was teen during those years and I was angry and wanted vengeance on the assholes who hurt my family. 15+ years later, I recognize the nuances of the entire situation; the person I initially perceived as the principal villain was just as much a victim himself (he was eventually punished with his own form of exile) while the main perpetrators, who I only learned about much later, have gone unaccountable with some going on to even greater and undeserved success. But More's defense of the Devil resonates with me because it tells us so much about the law and its purpose. Not to sound naive and like Pollyanna, if you cast it aside for even an instant, how can you trust that it won't be discarded when you truly need it. That's how it felt during that year when these people in power at the Archdiocese were discarding long-standing policy when it came to my family's situation. While they may not have been violating the law (may not- I wasn't privy to my parents' legal counsel), I can't help but laugh whenever that Archdiocese (or the Church in general) whines about legal judgment being served against them in any of the child sexual abuse cases. How can they lay down the laws and then expect them to be there for them when it's convenient. More's retort about selling your soul for so little ties in so nicely here. I didn't expect to go on and on about this. I just happened to put on the movie the in the background while I worked and wanted to say I don't think it gets the credit it deserves. However, I also understand the stuffy costume drama critiques bc they are definitely valid. I love the movie but that is still true. Paul Scofield's performance as More is such a grounded portrayal of integrity and principle. It seems like it should be impossible to embody that kind of ethic without grandstanding or pomposity but it's such a masterful turn and should be studied. Leo McKern is also fantastic and turns out such a droll, bitchy performance as an unapologetic henchman of Henry VIII. He's a delight every time he's on screen.

Big question I have: who are your top 10 favourite Awakening characters from the First Generation and why?
This one will be fun :D also same disclaimer I always say: these aren’t in any particular order except for number one, because he really is number one.
That’s pretty much how all my lists go, lol.
Priam. This man is perfect and wonderful in so many ways; before I played Awakening, I watched all the confessions of the male characters, saw him, and went “THAT ONE. HE’S THE ONE .” He left me smitten even before I knew anything about him, like him being Ike’s descendent, and I’ve always been drawn more towards the “Avatarsexuals”. The game always tries to play him off as annoying, but he’s just incredibly passionate about gaining strength. He’s actually pretty passionate about everything he does, especially when he confesses that he’s fallen in love with you. His confession portrait has to be one of the most romantic in the game:
Priam is a hulking beast of a warrior but here, he’s kneeling down in front of you, having taken his gloves off so he can hold your hand in his (no one else does this by the way) while he gazes adoringly into your eyes. Combine that with how powerful and handsome he is, he’s my ultimate husband choice in Awakening. The only downside is how far in the game he is before you can recruit him (Chapter 25) but he’s worth it.
2. Aversa. I like a lot of SpotPass characters, and I like Aversa for her extra lore. Most people hate the SpotPass characters for turning the villains “good”, but I think it’s neat that the bad guys help defeat the TRUE villain pulling the strings (and it’s not like bad guys like Validar became good). Aside from that, Aversa is actually a sweetheart who struggles with making friends because she feels like she doesn’t deserve it (in her supports with M!Robin at least). It definitely makes her one of the more interesting female Awakening characters.
3. Vaike. WHEN, IS??? WHEN ARE WE GETTING TEACH??? Here’s hoping he’s not a demote when we get him… he’s a cool dude and his support with Sully is actually pretty touching, they were made for each other.
4. Frederick. I think Frederick (along with Dedue) is actually one of the nicer vassal characters in Fire Emblem, because Jakob can kind of be an asshole sometimes and Hubert is… Hubert. He’s diligent, cares about others, and holds the Shepherds together.
5. Gregor. The dude is SO overlooked as “haha funny Russian man” despite the fact that he’s powerful as fuck and even could have been a Khan of Regna Ferox if he wanted to. And RESOURCEFUL, the fact that he knew how to do Cordelia’s makeup is impressive. Plus I think he’s the best dad for Severa (I actually headcanon that Severa is bilingual in Gregor’s homeland tongue and it comes out when she’s pissed off at something or someone). Great dude and I’m glad he got added to FEH.
6. Gangrel. I said it. He works great as an antagonist and he’s a fun ally with a fascinating backstory (he kind of reminds me of Askeladd from Vinland Saga). It’s actually really sad to me that he dies a horrible death if he doesn’t support with F!Robin, I’d have liked for him to have loved to do SOMETHING.
7. Kellam. NO END. I’VE HEARD NO END TO THE INVISIBILITY JOKES. I GET IT. I will ALWAYS acknowledge my boy. He’s such a sweetheart and I adore his support with Olivia. He better get a prf when he gets added to FEH or I will riot.
8. Panne. She turns into a bunny. I like her.
But also she has a great backstory.
9. Virion. Ok yes he’s silly and goofy and flirts with anything that looks remotely female and walks on two legs. But if you read his Support with F!Robin (definitely one of the most sincere supports of the game in my opinion), he’s actually a very noble and caring guy. Especially during one of the DLCs where he sells an heirloom dagger for an old couple who was sick, and refuses to be acknowledged in any way or form for doing so. He’s got a great heart.
10. Mustafa. Does this count? Probably not but I wanna give him a shoutout anyways. I’m mad that HE wasn’t a SpotPass character, as cool as Walhart was, I would have preferred Mustafa. At least he got added to FEH, I’ll take what I can get.
Special additional shoutouts to Olivia, Sully, Lon’qu, and Yen’fey, they’re also really cool. I do like the other characters (especially Maribelle’s support where she knows how to talk like a sailor) but I’d prioritize these guys on the list.

Hi....If you don't mind, can I ask, what are your top 10 (or top 7) favorite media (can be books/ manga/ anime/movies/tv series)? Why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before......Thanks....
no need to apologize! this is a great question, thank you for asking! i think i'll go with anime just 'cause it's easiest (i have a MAL and rank every series i watch from 1-10). i originally had movies in here but i think i'm gonna cut them out and just keep it to series and ovas. and "why do you love them" is an AWESOME question I never get! i don't know if i'll be able to explain myself well, but I'll try!
fullmetal alchemist ('03). why? this was pretty much my gateway anime. it's been over 10 years I believe since I've last seen any of it, so it's entirely possible that my opinion has since changed. but i definitely have nostalgia goggles on for it, and i know it is actually good, too haha
2. natsume yuujinchou (specifically seasons 6, 5, 4, and 3). why? some seasons of natsume i have rated higher than others, apparently. natsume is a special show. due to the nature of how long it is, there is the drawback that sometimes it feels like it repeats itself and tells similar stories. but even then it is just such a good story of found family and finding love after a life of strife, and it's just. very good. (i do think it should end soon though before it feels like it's just recycling old stories)
3. made in abyss. why? season 1 still stands out to me above the movie and 2. it was such a special experience. the art, the animation, the background art, the music, it all comes together to create such a fascinating world. the weak point would definitely be its characters, but even then everything else comes together so well that it doesn't really matter. it has one of the best first episodes of any anime (when the sun came up over orth and the music cued in I knew I was hooked) and I also adore season 1's ending; if the show never got a continuation, it could have ended right there and I would have been content (not a lot of other anime can say the same about their endings!).
4. steins; gate. why? it's also been a very long time since i've seen this one, so possible my opinion has changed. still, I remember being super interested after the first episode, and the following 12 that people tend to critique as being "slow" or a "slog" never really felt that way for me. there was always something fun and interesting going on. i compare this one with link click a lot, just because people tend to go the magica route and i firmly believe steins;gate is the better time travel show (though lc isn't over yet so maybe an unfair comparison. still it'd take a LOT for lc to reach anywhere near the heights of steins;gate to me). when okabe goes back over and over to try and save mayuri, i just remember being absolutely floored. really good stuff.
5. vinald saga. why? it's just such a well constructed story. and the author's comments about not wanting a world with war is so interesting, given how violent the first season is. it's really interesting to watch thorfinn grow and change (and i never understood the hate that he was too violent or annoying or a brat? he's just a kid who's lost everything, cut him some slack jeez). i love the last shot of season 1, corny as it is-- all the memories reflected on the dropping knife was great. and askeladd was one of the best villains i've ever seen. he's not even ~morally grey~ or anything; he's pretty strongly in the wrong, but his thinking and motivations and everything are so interesting and compelling. i don't think it's perfect; there are flaws for sure (i wasn't the biggest fan of how in s2 canute just. decides to turn his ships back after a small conversation with thorfinn lol) but it is very good.
6. this boy cuaght a merman. why? ok this one objectively does not deserve a 10. it's a 30minute ova about a boy falling in love with a merman. that's it. it's not incredible or amazing or ground breaking. buuuuuut it's my favorite soubi yamamoto ova and i adore soubi yamamoto and so she's getting a place on this list. she is responsible for animating, storyboarding, backgrounds, directing, etc etc everything in here, it's incredible (and she was only like 25, or something when she did it. fucking bananas). i love her please go check out her works (besides crystallization)
7. noragami. why? ok again probably not objectively THAT good, but this is one of the first anime that got me to read the manga, and here I am some 10 years later (ok a little less than 10 years because I didn't start reading the manga the year it started publishing, I think). noragami's MANGA is incredible and amazing and wonderful. but I do believe (much against the popular opinion amongst noragami manga readers) that the anime is also amazing, and YES that includes season 1. the crew behind it really loved the manga I feel (at least the director did, and there's proof for that) and adapted it faithfully and well. noragami is a story of found family and of turning your life and fate around, and it's very good.
8. she and her cat: everything flows. why? this one is only 4 episodes, 8 minutes each. it tells a story of a 20-something (actually she's still in college iirc) who lives on her own with her cat, and is trying to be an adult. but it's told from the cat's perspective. it's so sweet; the cat comments on how she "grooms herself" (brushes her hair, puts on her interview clothes) and "looks pretty" and things and it is just so great. i love the line (not a direct quote) "she opens that heavy door again today and heads out. on the other side of that door is a somewhat unforgiving, somewhat cruel world. but she's doing her best to learn to love that world. and i love her for that." just....so good (also the show made me cry)
9. yuru camp. why? second iyashikei on this list! SOL/iyashikei is actually my favorite genre of anime, generally speaking, but it can be hard to do it well. yuru camp ABSOLUTELY does it well. i read a commentary once ages ago, about how one of the great things about yuru camp is that the girls are allowed to just... be girls, and it always stuck with me. there's no fanservice, and these girls really feel like real characters who exist. there was another commentary (maybe same one?) about how rin is this introverted, more lonesome character, but she enjoys the solitude. but what's cool about yuru camp is she is never forced to change or become more extroverted; her friends accept her for who she is, nadeshiko will invite her out but not push her, and then sometimes she does go out! and she changes and becomes a bit more social, but never gives up solo camping. AND the more extroverted, outgoing character INSTEAD comes to embrace solo camping! what a cool idea, executed amazingly! so the characters are a strong point here, but the banter and camping is a lot of fun too. i still haven't watched the movie, but i'll get there eventually!
10. odd taxi. why? this one is 100% on the writing. it is so clever and quick-witted, it's a ton of fun to watch. i've never watched any other anime like it. the mystery/thriller aspects are a lot of fun too, and i remember reading reddit threads and theories on this one as it was airing. what was so cool is that they plant subtle hints that you can ABSOLUTELY catch if you have sharp eyes (i likely wouldn't have if it weren't for reading others' theories) and you can know things before characters do. lot of fun.
--
wow this was so much fun to write up! thank you so much for the question!

how do you think the events of chot affected Anna later on in life?
Although I think she was severly ooc in all the saga but well
**SPOILER WARNING!!**
Well, there's how **I** think it should have gone/should go and then there's what it implied in the coda and epilogue.
The coda and epilogue really imply heavily that Anna was relatively fine for the rest of her life and I think that's a load of bullshit.
SO. I shall tell you the proper course of events.
Let's start with the fact that she was there for her baby brother's armed kidnapping and subsequent rescue. She saw her estranged aunt carve a rune on her three-year-old brother and was the person who jumped in at the last moment to save him from irreperable harm from a finished rune.
Then there's her not-so-strange-but-still-kind-weird evolving relationship with Ari. She's 19. Relationships are chaotic. Especially when your family is also going through a lot and your sort-of-ex-girlfriend shows up at your door saying she can't go back home. And then your own parents basically immediately fold her into the family.
But, the big one you probably specifically meant for me to address: her brother died.
Anna had to watch her brother die in her arms despite trying over and over again to save him with what resources she had at hand. And she couldn't even find solace in her family because she's trapped in London away from her parents--the people she probably wanted to be with more than anything. Anna acts tough, but we know she deeply cares about her family and she has always been protective of Christopher.
That has to mess you up. Yet the only canonical aftermath we see of Anna's grief is her crying at night and Ari hearing it and trying to help. Can we take a moment to consider how she had to have felt when she finally did see her parents? Having to face them when she knows that Christopher died in her arms and she couldn't save him? No matter how much she logically knows she isn't at fault, she probably felt some level of guilt and pain about it.
Then there's the hypothetical funeral we didn't get. It can't be easy to hear your mother scream in that kind of pain when the pyre is lit. Or to watch your dad, who you've also looked up to your whole life, repress his own grief out of pure concern and love for you, your brother, and your mother, knowing full well that he is grieving too.
And at that point, Christopher's absence has to be felt hard by her. She spent, what, 16 years of her life as Christopher's big sister? She had to have been so used to the smell of burnt clothing and random chemicals. Used to hearing a million facts about things she hasn't a clue about. Used to hearing a random explosion every now and again. But now everything smells unburnt and everything is silent.
I don't think Anna would just pick up and travel halfway around the world less than a year later and leave her parents. I completely understand her wanting to visit India with Ari and appreciate her own family heritage, too, but I think Ari would have understood Anna wanting to stay a little longer to make sure they would be all right.
Later on in her life, I definitely think there are some things she smells or hears that instantly trigger a wave of sadness because it reminds her of Christopher. "He would have loved this," kind of emotion. The rapid advancement of technology during what should have been his whole lifetime? Christopher would have been fascinated with all of it.
She, like I imagine Cecily, too, develops an almost trigger-like response at seeing throwing knives. I don't think either of them ever touch a throwing knife again. Which probably proves difficult for Anna given she is a Shadowhunter and has to cross paths with other Shadowhunters who use throwing knives. She just can't see them without being reminded of seeing her brother die with a throwing knife in his shoulder.
One thing I am grateful for is the establishment of various kinds of afterlives in the Shadow World. I am glad that eventually she does get to see her brother again. I imagine Christopher is so happy to see her. (Not to mention how their parents probably felt seeing him again. I won't get into that. It makes me cry, for real.)
So, yeah. I think the pain eases with time, as it does with most things, but she never, ever forgets about him and probably finds herself talking aloud to nobody pretending she's talking to him.
NOW I REALLY AM CRYING. I LOVE THIS BOY SO MUCH AND I HATE WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM GOD DAMN IT.

Get to know you tag game
tagged by @xamaxenta (<3<3<3)
Three Ships: MAS (should've seen that one coming), hannigram is a classic, and puzzleshipping (no one is allowed to judge me on this)
First ship: inuyasha and kagome (when I realized what shipping was, if we're going first ever time I wanted two characters together it was definitely Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask)
Last Song: Daftendirekt by Daft Punk, hardcore daft punk fan over here though my favorite song from them is either Harder Better Faster Stronger or Human After All
Last Movie: happy feet 2, specifically and only for the Bridge of Light sequence and the ending sequence that starts with eric's opera number and ends with under pressure (under pressure just sounds so damn good with a hundred vocals okay)
Currently Reading: Indifferent Stars Above (The Harrowing Saga of the Donner Party) and fanfiction. I have a morbid fascination with stories of humans against the elements that they have no business surviving, shipwrecks, duty, loyalty, and romance. There's a reoccurring theme in my written works thanks to this.
Currently Watching: steadily making my way through Major Crimes (sequel series to The Closer) and I'm debating picking up Boardwalk Empire or Succession after that. Or I might rewatch Hannibal again.
Currently Consuming: water. been up since 5am and I don't usually eat breakfast until 7 or 8.
Currently Craving: something savory

Ten books to know me
Tagged by @notallsandmen — so excited to do my first one of these kinds of posts: thanks for the tag!
Rules: 10 (non-ancient) books for people to get to know you better, or that you just really like.
So the big question is how the hell do I narrow this list down to 10?? I consider this my list as of this moment and not the definitive list of all time...as I'll likely think of at least 5 books I should have put on this list as soon as I hit publish. The Secret Garden by Francis Hodgson Burnett with illustrations by Tasha Tudor The illustrations on this book are important: they really captivated me when I first read this in elementary school, and this quickly became my first favorite novel. I'd check it out and read it again and again. I also loved her other books, but this one will always be my favorite. Tasha Tudor's work was really influential on me wanting to go into design/illustration. Probably also why I love reading classic literature.
Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien The first fantasy series I really got into and it's still the bar I measure everything else up against. His world-building is amazing, and I love how it's really an exercise in recreating an Epic Saga like the stories of Norse mythology. (which I was also really into: that and Greek myth) I've read it over 6 times and am long over due to watch the EE movies again sometime soon.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by JK Rowling Look, at the time we didn't know she'd become what's she's become. Anyways, I was really bored during a holiday at my grandparents' house, and picked up my little sister's copy. It then became a special bonding book series as I made it my mission to get my kid brother to learn how to read and to also like it. Probably my first real fandom after LotR, and definitely my gateway into fanfiction. Also, surprisingly, my gateway into Agatha Christie and other mystery novels.
Persuasion by Jane Austen I discovered Jane Austen at the end of middle school, and while some of her books were a bit hard at that age to keep track of (I had to make a chart of characters for Emma), she quickly became a favorite author. This is my all-time favorite: as much as I love Pride and Prejudice, the storyline really spoke to my notions of romance at the time. And unlike Jane Eyre, it still holds up for me on a reread. Also, Austen's characterizations can just be really funny.
My Ántonia by Willa Cather Czech pioneers in Nebraska, companionate love vs passionate love...This book had a profound impact on how I approached finding love in my life, as well as giving me some empathy for the immigrants in my own family's past.
Die Verwandlung by Franz Kafka One of the first books I was able to read in German, and still one of my favorites. (Although Tintenherz by Cornelia Funke or a translation of James and the Giant Peach rank up there for favorite) I hate bugs, but I also just really love the line "Er fühlt sich wohl." Because it feels like it encompasses so much more than the English translation of "he felt good/well."
Bleak House by Charles Dickens Dude, Dickens may be wordy, but his characters are hilarious! This and The Cricket on the Hearth are my fav books by him.
Visitation by Jennifer Erpenbeck What if the places we live in have feelings and memory? What have they experienced over the centuries? What have they seen? A fascinating look at one location's experience in Germany.
The Rose Code by Kate Quinn The way Quinn describes her heroine decrypting Nazi code made me feel like my own brain was solving it. Also a fairly accurate description of how my own brain feels when it solves a particularly nasty design problem. Plus a mystery!
How Long Til Black Future Month by NK Jemisin but also her Broken Earth trilogy Dude, I'll read anything Jeminson writes. I found her through both LeVar Burton Reads and also my brother recommending Broken Earth (geology! speculative fiction!), and this short story collection has a little bit of everything for everyone. Some of the stories in this collection just linger in the back of my brain. Also some of the first fan art I've ever drawn. (unless you count drawing Disney characters as a kid)
Honorable mention: just adding that reading The Sandman has basically made Neil Gaiman shoot to the top of the list of my favorite authors. I'm still working through his works, so don't have a favorite yet to share.
I think everyone I follow has already done this prompt, so it's hard to tag someone. If you're reading this and want to participate, consider this your tag! (but tag me back so I can see all your book recs!)

This is the second story of a saga! You might not get it if you haven't read the first one.
<< Previous story - Next story >>
The years following the Second Wizarding War were ones of quiet renewal. Everyone, from the owner of the smallest shop in Diagon Alley to the British Minister for Magic, worked to rebuild a harmonious, peaceful Wizarding Community, a world where the deeds of Lord Voldemort would forever be remembered as a warning, never as an inspiration. Everywhere, on every street, in every home, office and classroom, there was an air of gentle, comforting serenity. Everywhere except in Severus Snape's office, in the dungeon of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There was plenty of silence within those four walls, but the Defence Against the Dark Arts professor quickly learned, at his own expense, to distinguish that quiet atmosphere from the peace that pervaded the rest of the castle. That apparent calm concealed something else entirely.
In the seven years leading up to Voldemort's defeat, Omegas had become so accustomed to surviving as a nomad that she seemed to have completely forgotten how to live in a civilised society. With almost a year to go before Hogwarts reopened, Severus initially tried to persuade her to leave the school.
"Why?" she asked, bending over a cauldron containing a milky liquid that Severus didn't bother to identify.
"Generally, professors don't stay at Hogwarts when there are no classes."
"Why?" she repeated, now adding what looked very much like human hair to the mixture.
"Because professors have no reason to stay at Hogwarts when there are no classes," he explained.
He was careful not to let his tone suggest how stupid he thought it was to underline that obviousness, for she had picked up a small silver dagger and was now staring at him with a frown, her head tilted slightly to one side.
"Where do they go?" she asked, without the slightest hint of irony.
Severus looked around in confusion. "Home," he said simply.
Omegas stopped looking at him, turned and stuck the tip of the dagger into one of her fingertips before dipping the bleeding finger into the whitish fluid. "I don't have one," she observed.
He approached the cauldron and watched in fascination as a dark red spiral formed in the milky-white mixture. "I do."
She raised her head again and looked at him with a pair of half-closed violet eyes, still holding the silver dagger in one hand. "Are you asking me to come to your house?"
It was only then that Severus realised that he had just proposed to a woman he had known for only a few months, with whom he had a relationship that had yet to be given a title or precise definition, armed with a knife and engaged in something decidedly shady, that they should live together. He swallowed and continued to stare at her without saying a word until he was distracted by something even more bizarre than the situation he had found himself in: the contents of the cauldron had begun to scream. Omegas turned sharply, pulled out her finger and stared at the now pale pink liquid. She put the dagger down and reached out to him.
"Lend me your wand?" she asked, raising her voice to be heard over the screams.
He pulled it from under his cloak and handed it to her.
"What the hell is that?"
"Silencio," she cast, pointing the wand at the cauldron.
The screams stopped. She waved it again and the cauldron and all the ingredients around it disappeared. She slung her bag over her shoulder, gave him one of her indecipherable smiles and handed the wand back to him.
"Fine by me," she said. She walked past him to the office door. "Shall we go?"
Severus was not prepared for her to accept immediately. He had suspected that Omegas would enter his home sooner or later, but he hadn't expected it to happen so abruptly, without warning, from one day to the next. His apartment in Spinner's End had been unoccupied for months, and even in its better days it couldn't be described as a welcoming place. It was small, dark, the neighbourhood wasn't exactly respectable, and since he'd last seen it, at least a couple of spider colonies seemed to have decided to take up residence among the many bookshelves that filled his living room. As they crossed the threshold, Severus glanced at Omegas, and a vivid memory of the last time he had seen her in a house resurfaced in his mind. It had been with Jay in a flat on the fifth floor of a bright building in a quiet street on the outskirts of Liverpool. He had seen her sitting on a soft couch, surrounded by white walls and large windows, high ceilings and immaculate floors. He watched from a distance as she took the first step into the dark room. Omegas placed her velvet bag on the only armchair in the middle of the living room and walked slowly towards the walls covered with dusty bookshelves. She stretched out one arm and ran her fingers along the spines of all the books on the shelves. Then she stopped and stared motionless at the top corner of one shelf. A moment later, her hand darted quickly to a nearby spider web and caught what, from its size, would have been more accurately described as a tarantula than a mere spider. She walked over to her bag, pulled out a glass jar, and a moment later she was removing all eight legs of the large spider, one by one, and placing them in the jar. Job done, she looked at the result of her work with some satisfaction, placed the jar back in her bag, turned to Severus and gave him one of her most genuine smiles.
"I like this place," she declared.
From the scene he had just witnessed, Severus might have been disgusted and vaguely intimidated if he hadn't been so busy being happy.

my verse characters’ reading preferences
this post specifically contains the characters time-period adequate and about the ones that hold a preference and favoritism towards literary works
AJAX CREED;
Ajax finds his literary taste relying on the gothic genre. Specifically, on the horror fiction ❝ Frankenstein❞ by Mary Shelley;
in which its dissecting of the relationship of creator-creation thematic, the timeless need/ambition of men to defy nature’s limits and the series of consequences of it, and most importantly: the concept and definition of being perceived as a monster; mesmerized Ajax from the start. It made him quite reflective as he mostly perceived himself to be a creature, a product of someone else’s whims and ideals.
ASTORIA SINCLAIR;
Astoria's favorite book is ❝Wuthering Heights❞ by Charlotte Brontë, she finds rather interesting the extensive detailing of a tale of love, revenge, resentment, and how all these subjects can be entangled and consequential to each other.
She also secretly relates with the main character's ambition, feeling somehow relivied of understanding that one can actually be driven to achieve their goals through negative emotions, like grudge and jealousy. But also understands it as a reminder of how low someone can fall from letting themselves be consumed by them.
JUNE HARRIS;
June’s favorite author is Jane Austen, enjoying the narrative of romance and discussions centered around girlhood, her favorite book by her being ❝Emma❞.
However, her favorite book of all time is ❝Howl’s Moving Castle❞ by Diana Wynne Jones , in which she is fascinated by the fantasy elements surrounding a colorful journey of discovery of identity and the touching power of love.
LILIANA GONZALEZ;
Liliana’s taste in books relies in the murder mysteries and detective crime fiction of Agatha Christie, not having a favorite in particular. Lili likes to analyze the narrative and characters’ motivations, trying to guess the plot before the book ends.
NORAH PARKER;
Norah’s favorite saga is ❝The Hunger Games❞ by Suzanne Collins. As one of the first books she read, Norah holds I affection for it and also is a big fan of the universe, having amazing memories from her early teens of going to the theaters with Amelie to watch the movies as soon as they were released.
The two girls cried a lot when Finnick died and Norah couldn’t shut up about for years, always ranting about it to Paul as she convinced him to read the books.
She is also a big fan of Marvel Comics, her favorite ones being the X-MEN and The Fantastic Four, and she also jokes about Spiderman being her favorite superhero because they share a last name.

I don't know how I didn't mention the Old Guard comics tbcfh, especially since I think I only watched the movie because of you. I completely understand not liking the art style (I didn't either) but they are honestly really good- (personally, I didn't like the movie at first (I hate movies in general and I think that's why) but then I read the comics and I was like "this is great actually this is perfect." And now I like the movie).
Image also did The Walking Dead Comics, I haven't read them and I don't watch the show but just generally that's a big name for them.
The Paper Girls comics are also very good, the show doesn't really follow them? Which isn't surprising but don't be surprised. (like the scene with Mac and her brother in the car from the show? I would die for that scene, but it doesn't exist in any way shape or form in the comics)
And Saga is definitely a different Genre, It's one of the most popular like ever (to the point my shitty bookstore sells the individual issues when they come out, which it never does, and even the workers were like "we sell these?") But that's more of a general "this is a good comic" rec then a "I think you specifically would enjoy this" rec so I understand.
And I also completely understand falling out of love with comics a little. Hopefully these help. I also constantly am like "maybe I don't like comics anymore. Maybe I'm done." And then I go feral for black canary and I'm like "...nevermind."
nonny! so sorry i meant to respond to this yesterday and then ended up crashing when i got home from work and have been busy w work again today.
(decided to put the rest under the cut bc i got a bit rambly as i tend to do lmao)
its not so much "falling out of love" with comics as it is "getting distracted by life/other things" i think i enjoy media like one might enjoy some really cool rocks and make a rock collection, i can sometimes forget some of my cool rocks in my collection when presented with a New Shiny Cool rock (is this a good metaphor? idk)
also omg i was the reason u watched the old guard? im so honored 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 ngl i do wish i could read the comics just for more content & also because they do genuinely seem GOOD i just. cant get past the art for some reason i cannot explain it i just. dont vibe with it. (maybe i could give tales through time a try bc im pretty sure that had a different art style??)
i did not entirely realize there were walking dead comics, but then again i barely got thru like 1 episode of walking dead when i tried, i remember noping out of trying the show after a graphic horse death?? i think? it's definitely not my speed, ngl i think zombie media kinda freaks me out a bit in general, though its more i think bc of my fear of being Chased/Hunted ? who knows lmao maybe its not that deep
also!! during my lunch break today i read the first comic in the new bop run and i am SO intrigued by it. as soon as sin was mentioned i was FULLY invested. i am SO curious why the amazons have her i need to know more! i know some hardcore comic fans can be touchy about bop lineup not including some of the core members but i think its always fun to mix it up a little plus this particular run doesnt seem to be erasing or dismissing dinah & babs' relationship which to me is the main thing (love dinahbabs, platonically & romantically) plus i just starting reading the 2000 batgirl run with cassandra cain so its fun seeing her in it, harley's always a hoot and i love her and dinah's general dynamic throughout comics (was it in the injustice world where that panel comes from of dinah & harley talking about motherhood??) and while im not super familar with big barda and i have never heard of zealot before im excited to learn more about them! also i loved the dinahollie interaction at the beginning <33 (i am a dinah multishipper first and foremost btw) and im fascinated by this particular bit with dinah's list of, badass heroes she knows but ruled out of recruiting for whatever reasons
the first side is Barbara, Vixen, Grace Choi, Huntress, Shiva, Selina, Talia, Cheshire. shiva through cheshire being extra scribbled out is so funny to me. other side is a little harder for me to figure out, theres Onyx(i think, had to google if there was even a dc character named onyx, which turns out there is!), almost positive the next one is Katana, and then possibly Manhunter? (kate spencer), Zatanna (which man. that would of been SO cool. i love zatanna. and black canary & zatanna bloodspell was SO good love their dynamic), the next one i got nothing for, all thats visible is "Black" with the other word hidden by dinah's hand, there are a lot of potentials though it kinda maybe looks like the second word starts with an A so after a brief google search maybe black alice??? is she even in the current dc universe? and then finally there's Fire/Ice, which, love that they are a unit not to be separated! i dont know a Whole lot about that duo but from what i do know i think they should be in lesbians with each other. i cannot wait for the next addition, thank you again for putting me on this run!
i think after i finish the 2000 batgirl run i will give injustice a try, and ive also discovered some other bop runs / one offs that im not entirely sure if i've read before that i may have to try out at some point bc i love women. im also sooo tempted to bring my physical comic collection back from my parents house when i go there this weekend and lowkey tempted to reread bombshells ajdslkjga. theres so many comics i would like to read why must there be adult responsibilities such as work.
anyways hope you're having a good day/past few days!! it was a delight seeing another message from you in my inbox!! 💖💖
#comics anon#abby replies#undescribed#like i also wanna read some more ww stuff and maybe find some donna troy stuff and maybe checkout the newest ww (yara?)#i kinda miss supergirl too tbh so im kinda like hmmmmmmmmmm#also god i wish there was more zatanna content. i love her#ajklsdg sorry for the absolute RAMBLES btw i hope you enjoy my mildly incoherent thoughts#anon

I think. I think I understand the appeal of Twilight.
(This is just my personal take, after finally watching the movies for the first time this year.)
Did I particularly *like* the films? No. Do I somehow find myself drawn to watching analyses, reading fic, scrolling fanart and memes, and looking up a million character headcanons? Somehow, YES!!
And I believe all of this has made me understand why people are so captivated by the franchise (even if they don’t necessarily “like” it):
it’s the allure of wasted potential.
It’s the fact that we all realize how much MORE these movies (and even books) could have been. All the backstories and dynamics that *could* have been explored, but weren’t. A whole family of fascinating side characters mostly ignored for the sake of one bland romance.
And hey, even said romance could’ve been really cool if it wasn’t so absolutely lacking in development/dealing with lazy characterization (and also if there hadn’t been such a power imbalance between the love interests-give Edward and Jacob less dickish behavior and make Bella less passive, and there you go, most major problems solved right there).
Plus, the fact that we’re given tiny tastes of genuinely intriguing lore before swinging back to bad dialogue and staring contests is simply frustrating.
And don’t even get me started on the ‘have your cake and eat it too’ ending.
This could’ve been a saga for the ages if done properly (not saying it WASN’T-it’s definitely notable, if not necessarily good), and it’s kinda sad to think about the potential that we didn’t get to see.
Oh well I guess-thanks to the dedicated fandom we still get some pretty great stuff ❤️!
(Also ngl the whole storyline is all just genuinely kinda funny if you think about it )
