this ended up being something a lot longer than i meant to be and is less of a fav trope and more of an analysis of how i view them or whatever but like. here have it

theo learning how to cope with life outside of the dread doctors and being viewed as a monster for his actions (which,,, sorry theo ily and i will forever be a theo defender,,, but never an apologist bc wtf bro) and liam understanding him because of what he's done during his ied episodes and the repercussions

liam's reluctant to admit he feels that empathy for him at first because hey!! this guy kind of not only evil but also batshit fucking bonkers!! but he kinda realizes without empathy he loses an aspect of his humanity and when he accepts it he realizes theo was quite honestly just in an incredibly abusive situation and was just trying to survive and became a product of his enviornment (and considering one of the causes of ied is environmental factors i feel like it wouldn't be too far fetched to say liam understands that personally too)

and theos reluctant to admit that he. feels guilty for anything he did. because that means admitting that he did bad things. which when he tries to rationalize makes no sense because he has done bad things and has even enjoyed doing it because his brains a little fucked and he knows that because he's a monster. but being guilty means he's a failure to the dread doctors. and he's already rotten at the edges and the edges are starting to peel away to show a rotten core and that means he's a failure to the mccall pack because they're a bunch of saints (compared to him at least. and if not, well they're on a saints leash) and he's spent so long being anything but a failure because being a failure means being dead and he cannot shake that no matter how hard he tries until he realizes liam sometimes fails at keeping his anger in check but that doesn't make him a failure. and then without even realizing liam starts teaching theo that it's okay to slip up a few times because that's what makes people human and maybe theo doesn't have to be a monster

but when they both accept themselves and the other it leads to a relationship that no one else quite gets (sure, mason has been there for liam his entire life and i cannot stress how much i adore their friendship but sometimes understanding something because you've watched it happen is worlds away from actually experiencing it) at first but it's the sort of thing that just. fits. because they can both push each other to their limits without actually going over (eventually) but also pull each other back when they need a reminder of who they are (people. not monsters.)

This got long so TL;DR: Mikoto acts on autopilot ~%90 of the time, but I believe he planned (most of) his crimes. He has straightforward reasons that align with his actions, but appears purely unreasonable because of his mental state. Kotoko is very deliberate, but acts her most violent out of raw emotion. She appears calculating, but feels completely out-of-control despite her strong "heroic" front.

y'know it SEEMS cliche that John screams like a madman every time he fronts but gee horror tropes aside has Es considered that switching can HURT?? like a lot???? Like idk maybe feeling your body flood with adrenaline and being made to handle that shit the moment someone "pisses him off" is a little bit agonizing? Maybe having no idea what's going on until he can process the emotional flooding adds fear which really doesn't help???

Fuck mannnnn when you read between the lines, John and Mikoto are a REALLY good deconstruction.

... especially since he is contrasted mainly with Kotoko. I say this because I was just struck with an idea.

ESSAY TIME LITERALLY A WHOLE ESSAY CAME OF THIS RANDOM THOUGHT no sources tho pure opinion~

So KOTOKO, despite saving the girl being her primary objective, kicked her victim to death out of anger. At her core, despite all her ideals, she was not acting out of reason or necessity, however reasonable the actual action seems.

Given that prisoner pairs are meant to starkly contrast, that gives me my best reasoning as to why I defend Mikoto's innocent vote while also praying John DOESN'T disappear:

Despite how unreasonable and irrational John acts at first, there's a reason he reacts the way he does. And deep down, somewhere in his mind, MIKOTO knows the reason he did what he did. His motives are real, even if he doesn't remember carrying out such a "dream." This leads me to believe there were REALLY big reasons, and likely good reasons, for killing who he did.

A deliberate, maybe even carefully premeditated act would undeniably lead to the death sentence. His brain knows this even if Mikoto himself isn't consciously thinking of it. But a defense of randomly "losing control?" MAYBE he can keep surviving. Because all he was doing was surviving.

I believe that when one protects themselves, they protect others as well. Perhaps I am biased, but no, abusive people should not go unaddressed and uninterrupted. It's very very very implied that John and Mikoto went after people he felt endangered by. I went over this in my first "Double" analysis, but TL;DR I think the red herring John gave (which is funny cuz that phrase comes from tactics to throw DOGS off their trail) goes SO much farther thematically than I've seen talk about.

John has reasons that he does what he does, as does Mikoto. Systems are wired for survival. The lucky ones do well in academics and even many job environments because they are ALWAYS processing what to do next. Burnout is SEVERE because the brain is basically always "on alert," even when we're checked out. I can find clinically documented sources for this claim and I will if I make a video or something about this, but yeah it sure is an EXPERIENCE when it all comes crashing down. Trying to end a cycle.

As for Kotoko? She is literally portrayed to have a one-track mind. Her ideals and justice. But ironically? She killed out of raw anger and emotion, which is what the wolf at the end of Deep Cover represents. Despite having a very "normal" life overall, SHE is the one who truly loses all control of herself. SHE beats up the people who annoy her. Because it's grating, as she said in Deep Cover, to face the ugliness of humanity and NOT be able to escape your brain's response to it. SHE cannot "disappear" and forget her rage at injustice like Mikoto can. She is at the mercy of this uncontrolled rage and the resulting violence she allows herself to perpetrate. Repeating a cycle.

it's so brilliant. It's SO brilliant. They are the same. They couldn't be more different. Neither is a hero nor a monster. But they are heroes in SOMEONE'S, or arguably MANY people's eyes. And yet in both 009 and 010's cases, when we see their truest and most raw colors, we question EVERYTHING we assumed before.

Mikoto is not telling the whole truth when he says he doesn't get angry or remember anything. John straight-up lied to cover Mikoto's motives for doing so, and possibly out of his own genuine confusion. He is acting on instinct drilled in by traumatic events that the brain is using as reference; however, with how DID works, John is not going to know that. It's not his "job," the protection role he plays in the system , to know that. Yet there are reasons all the same. His BIG reason, which he calls out to Mikoto in "Double," over and over, was to SAVE Mikoto. Meanwhile, Mikoto is afraid of his actions, but presumably carried them out in order to stay alive. Whatever his "dream," he still wishes he could be seen as a good man despite what he presumably felt he had to do to survive. DID is the "sink or swim" disorder; it's literally about saving yourself and being protected from the emotions that come with it. Whether or not his reasons truly make sense is yet to be seen, but either way, Mikoto feels he cannot trust himself. He is cut off from emotions that would make him believe his reasons were "bad enough" to ACTUALLY warrant murder. That is why he split; to forget how bad it truly got. He has NO idea how protected he truly is.

Y'know, now that I'm looking closely at the 8s and 10s (excluding that 5 outlier), I feel like F is the jealous type,, correct me if I'm wrong tho 😭💀 (the anon that asked if F is usually the jealous type)

I gotta be honest with you. F was never the jealous type - And when you two were together they trusted you 100%, still, they always checked whether you were ok with people around you, approaching you or anything like that. Not hesitating to defend you or fight somebody off if necessary, and damn, that didn't happen just once but several times. Once they got a pretty bad souvenir from this, but they would do it again, and again and again. Oh how their parents hated it when they heard once more that their golden child got in trouble because of you.

Regarding their role: They had eyes only for you since day one. Like, no matter who it was, pretty, famous or naked in front of them, they did not care and made sure the person knew asap - in fact these weren't their proudest moments as they could get pretty... rude and hurtful to put it mild.

..but now, you're not together anymore and they have a hard time wrapping their head around this - around the fact that you might want to be with someone else. So when they see you with somebody new, in any kind of romantic interaction, it hurts, because to them this feels like maybe they were never special - they were never enough. That you don't miss them, don't think about them anymore like they do about you. They know their jealousy doesn't make sense - because it was them who broke up with you, it was them who broke your heart, who hurt you, who left you behind without answers, with nothing but a cheap, oh so cheap lie. They know these thoughts are egoistic but they cannot stop them. These thoughts gnaw at them, like so hard, they begin to doubt everything, even your shared past. So here they are now, comparing themselves to the new person in your life. And now they fear that maybe you are happy they did break up, that you're happy to be rid of them, are happy to be free. They know these thoughts are not the most logical and they would deserve any hate you feel for them, but they desperately hope they are wrong as their thoughts revolve around any negative possibility and any destructive scenario - like a black hole sucking them in.

I have a question and lmk if its out of line or if you dont wanna answer it thats fine, but basically im a professional artist in the field of fine arts, and as such i have over time learned what makes art "good". I can like or not like it, but usually, im at least able to come up with a defendable opinion on why it is contextually bad art or good art, or rather, whether or not a given artist is 'good' at what they do. With poetry tho, while i (like everyone i think) journal recreationally, i really have trouble identifying whether either my own poems or other peoples are good. Like. This came to mind esp after your rupi kaur post, bc ur right, i dont like her, but i cannot for the life of me articulatw WHY i think its bad. Anyway tldr i guess how can you tell? What are some markers of good vs bad poetry ? (Especially technically speaking) i think these 2 things are similar bc with art too a lot of ppl will be like "ohhh its all relative" but like there are actual markers ofskill and well executed intent, and for fine arts i tend to know them (stuff like influence/filiation, taking into acct the viewers experience, intentionality of creative choices.....) but with poetry as a field i just like. This is a very complicated debate that has been ongoing since the birth of art and literature. I think it can be difficult for some people to allow that a piece of art (in this case, this includes poetry) can be technically well-crafted while not effecting them emotionally, and that a piece of art can effect them emotionally while being not technically well-crafted. A words app poem that you see which is filled with typos and accidental grammatical errors but which touches on a topic deeply important to you can make you cry while still needing work in its technical aspects, and that doesn't make it either good or bad as an objective work of art. Likewise, there are plenty of poems I've read which were deftly crafted by talented poets but were ultimately forgettable to me because they did not strike an emotional chord. Their lack of emotional resonance also does not make them good or bad. I think that because art has such a capacity for emotional resonance, it's easy to accept that as the most important criteria for what makes art "good," but I personally don't think that's fair. But to me, good poetry is honest--not autobiographical, but written with intent, some understanding of wordcraft as a medium, and meant to evoke a genuine understanding within the reader. Rupi Kaur is sort of a punching bag at this point, often from people who don't actually write poetry which I'll admit I find frustrating, because most criticism of her works is shallow and dependent on the idea that a poem must make you feel something to be good. That isn't a good basis for art criticism, because what makes you feel something is never guaranteed to make anyone else feel. But to me, what makes Kaur's poetry "bad" (not my preferred term, I'd describe it more as shallow or juvenile) is the lack of honesty. Her work is purposefully scrubbed of any distinction so it can be as widely applicable as possible, and in doing so, her poems become no more genuine or meaningful than the mass-printed fortunes in fortune cookies. And, worst of all, there is no technicality behind her wordcraft to make up for the lack of thematic complexity. Both style and substance are rendered as plain and inoffensive as possible. When an artist creates something, they are putting something of themselves into their work, so the art becomes a contract between the artist and audience. The artist is trusting the audience to genuinely engage with their work, and the audience is trusting that the artist has shared something genuine. Good or bad comes later; that it is something the artist created themselves with intent is the first step. But when art is made only with mass consumption in mind, it becomes stripped down to only the bare ingredients of art; it is art on paper, by definition, but it is not art by intent. It's a tree with no limbs, no leaves, no creatures making a home in it. It's not much better than a telephone pole.

When I judge a poem as good or bad, I look first for complexity, either in narrative or structure. This doesn't mean a poem must be a long-winded sonnet to be good; some of my favorite poems are haikus, and in fact haiku is my favorite poetic form. This is because often I find haikus carry multiple meanings, the poet packing in as much story as they can in such small luggage. Most of all, I just wish would-be critics would use their words; "Rupi Kaur's poetry is bad because it's boring" is not good criticism. Your definition of boring is not someone else's. "Rupi Kaur's poetry is rendered shallow and meaningless by the attention-consumption economy it was bred in and has no intelligent wordplay or articulation to constitute a poem that is at least engaging for the mind to read" is a bit more comprehensive.

hello this has been in my ask for a while to the point that i had to dig back through my blog to find the post in question! but i have since tagged it so i can find it again~ i have not actually played the game and probably won't be able to for a while, so i'm gonna just answer the ones i can with the info i have! <3

Where can your Tav be recruited? Are they first encountered on the Nautiloid, or in the Nautiloid crash region? Or are they not recruitable until a later act?

i think of Pyre as a fairly early to grab optional companion, and he can only be recruited if you side with/protect the tiefling refugees. i think he might be a contact of Zevlor's that he tells you to seek out for help. an old brother-in-arms~ you will probably find him Chilling and Surrounded By Corpses while casually cleaning his sword.

Do the other companions have special comments or reactions upon recruiting your Tav?

Wyll for sure makes a comment about Pyre being "one hell of a tiefling" (haha) just based on size alone. "So they were definitely exaggerating about his size... but not by much." He's probably heard stories here and there from folks around the camp that know him/know of him. might even have a fun little kind-of-awed war story or two he's been told that are definitely a bit overblown after so long. Astarion just calls him something like a Wall Of Meat and sounds Vaguely Hungry about that. Karlach wants to see if she can goad him into a sparring match~ Shadowheart, ofc, senses Selunite magic and is not pleased...

Does your Tav have any comments or advice when you recruit other companions?

Pyre is going to be polite and not just look straight at Astarion like "You know that's a vampire, right?" but he will probably say something along the lines of "Make sure you keep an eye on the pale one." Definitely has heard glowing reviews about Wyll and Karlach, but probably has some comments on their being... a bit green, but well-meaning and skilled nonetheless. He is polite about Shadowheart too, because he's not the most devout of paladins and is more focused on his vow rather than outright worship, but he's a very Cautious Type, so he's the sort to go down the line and give a Pros/Cons list lmao. "Idk she might betray you, she might not tho you decide" cryptic and not too helpful but he never said he was. He also has a plan prepared on how to kill literally anyone he meets if he thinks they're a threat in any way, and if he likes you enough, he might share <3

What sort of general actions raise or lower their approval?Are there any instances where your Tav can permanently leave the party, depending on player character actions?

Lumping these ones together because HOO BOY YEAH Pyre does not fuck around with certain things. His vow means he cannot sit by and just watch certain things go down. Obviously you won't even meet him if you side against the tieflings, so any sort of behavior that puts them in danger? You are suddenly hearing boss battle music. definitely gonna get some disapproval points for keeping that tome of Thay or giving it to anyone but him so he can destroy it, but he might still stick around, just side-eye you intensely. he doesn't really approve of most types of necromancy, but he's surprisingly civil with Withers. Basically any sort of treating people like chattel or tokens to be bartered, especially children or those who can't otherwise defend themselves gets HEAVY disapproval and to a certain extent straight-up Aggro~

Do they have any secrets that can be revealed? What are the prerequisites for this secret coming to light?

OH BOY SEVERAL. the one he's most careful about? that fact that he is not even a tiefling. he's a cambion. that one is more likely to come out than the rest of it, which is that he's half-succubus specifically. dealing with Raphael, he'd probably make himself pretty scarce, while also warning the player not to trust him. the whole House of Hope situation will have him tense and quierter than usual. He is staring daggers at Raphael the entire time, daring him to say something (which I'm sure he would eventually, if you continuousy involve Pyre in quests with Raphael) and i feel like Pyre's origins would come out specifically upon dealing with either Haarlep or Mizora.

What do they say when the Player Character asks them to stay in camp? How about when the Player Character asks them to come adventuring again?

People really test my limits. I can be nice but I draw the line when it comes to people I love (idc that they don't know me ) I will still defend them. How you going to hate on someone and yet have a black screen as your pfp? Numbers as your user name and no posts or followers? Make it make sense. People who are solo stans or who only like 2-3 members of the group really piss me off. It is more than okay to have a bias and to talk about them, but when see people comment "I don't really like this member that much but this member is hot" Yeah no we not doing that. i also don't think this is something new to say but following your previous reblog (that tik tok) makes me think of the shit halsey does sometimes and how the majority of their fan base immediately goes 'yikes' and i think it's also how certain artists have portrayed themselves and how certain artists have created their personas/stage character. i'm taking halsey as an example cause they're the other artist i know very well but like, ever since the beginning ashley showed themselves as this open minded and very very opinionated person who has always used their persona (halsey) as an excuse to be even more vocal about things that mattered to them (i'm exclusively talking about this character that's created bc halsey's background is light years away from being the same as taylor's) and on the contrary taylor has (insert every reason here i know why she did but i also don't care) created this america's sweetheart image, the perfect white girl, the girl who does no harm and even if she fucks up "her intentions were good!!" (giving no space to actually question that aka the entire lover era with the yntc mv and the me! comment in miss americana?) and that's why people cannot even think about calling taylor out (i think this matty case is the exception since a LOT of fans did) and it's just like... taylor you're one smart motherfucker bro, it's genius but also quite fucked up but so genius. bc even tho she tried to miley cyrus her way out of the "naive/nice girl" thing she will always be that. anyway, i hope i don't get cancelled and maybe i'm wrong? but i needed to talk about this with someone, bye ily <3

100% agreed with everything you said. I know the biggest backlash Halsey got (in my memory) was when she used to go around kissing fans (I'm sure you remember, lol.) I remember Tumblr especially went after them hard because one of the fans they kissed was a minor at the time - which was deserved! (There were Halsey fans making excuses for her, but I recall them being in the minority.) But like, once Halsey started gaining more fame and realizing the connection she had with her fans and her power in that connection, she stopped doing things like that. She apologized, said she didn't know the fan was a minor, and hasn't kissed any fans since. The other kinds of backlash Halsey gets aren't really the same, but when she does something wrong, she tends to own up to it. And it's always Halsey, not Halsey's team.

Whereas with Taylor... anytime there's even the smallest bit of backlash against her, her team (be it online Swifties or her actual PR team) rush to defend her, talk about her intentions, and really make it seem like she's perfect and innocent and incapable of making mistakes. I'll honestly never get over how many Swifties were foaming at the mouth trying to defend her when the Private Jet Usage thing was going around. The backlash from that died down pretty quickly and most Swifties I saw weren't willing to even say that she was doing something wrong.

She's really done something smart - horrifying, but smart - in terms of walking this line of America's Sweetheart Girl-Next-Door and Very Savvy Rich White Woman. I do think we might finally be hitting a point where people won't be able to forgive her, though.

Matty Healy is not interested in cultivating a positive public image of himself. He frankly seems to thrive off and enjoy controversy. It's a lot harder for people to maintain that Perfect Image of Taylor when she's so intimately associating with someone who handles his own fame and image the opposite way.

Maybe she truly believes she's untouchable at this point and just doesn't care. Maybe she thinks the power of her own image will be enough to override his. Maybe she doesn't think any backlash against her is ever deserved, after all the (undeserved) hate she got pre-Reputation, so she's ignoring this and writing it off as just more mindless hating. I have no idea where her head is at, and I don't think anyone else really does, either.

If nothing else, it'll be interesting moving forward, seeing where this goes. I don't think I've ever seen a celebrity match with such opposite perspectives and methods of maintaining their public images. I'm curious to see if (1) they even stay together that long (this kind of reeks of a rebound to me) and (2) if the disgust/outrage will persist if they do stay together.

I really feel for the BIPOC fans who have been hurt by all of this, though. One thing Megha (hi @tolerateit <3) mentioned a day or two ago really hit me - for so many Swifties, it's not even really just about Taylor, but about the community they've built and the friends they've made by being fans of hers. Knowing Taylor is dating someone like Matty is bad enough - seeing white Swifties make excuses for her and ostracize BIPOC fans for speaking up is a level of gross and sad that I don't really have words for. That's the part of this that really sucks the most.
