delicate -- Hotch x Reader one-shot
Here’s that one-shot I’ve been holding for a while! Named her delicate after Taylor Swift’s song, purely because of the whole “dive bar on the east side/where you at?” imagery. I listened to the Spotify Singles (acoustic) version of the song while writing this, if you wanna listen while you read! Enjoy!! xx.
Summary: Hotch doesn’t go to bars very often. Until he meets you at one.
Warnings: age gap (reader is somewhere around 24-25), mentioning of being safe at a bar (so alluding to date rape drugs), harassment from one drunk dickhead

Hotch doesn’t go to bars.
When he’s not on a case, working on paperwork for a case, or caring for his son, he’s normally asleep.
Not at a bar.
But some nights, the memories are too much. Some nights, the cases take a toll on him — especially the children that never made it back home to their parents.
He doesn’t know why he’s in a bar. The only time he comes is when the team goes out and wants to drag him with. It’s normally Dave who manages to get him to agree to a beer or two.
But Aaron is alone this time.
You, on the other hand, know exactly why you’re in a bar.
You’re bored, you’ve just finished your masters degree, you need a drink and some time to yourself to people-watch.
It’s fun, really. Observing people while they’re drunk. You usually have one drink and switch over to water, wanting to remember the things you see while also staying safe.
But occasionally— or, well, more than occasionally by the sheer unfortunate fact of you being a woman alone in a bar, you get the typical man sliding into the seat next to you before he’s even all the way through his rehearsed, “Is this seat taken?”
You never answer. There is no point in trying because their ass already hits the chair before you can say, “Yes, it’s taken, by my foot, now move before I kick it up your ass.”
You never say that, not often. Sometimes the guys can be pretty big assholes, but the bartender, Vanessa, knows you well, so she usually threatens security before you get yourself in trouble.
Unfortunately, tonight looks like it’s going to be one of those nights.
The bar is packed for a reason you aren’t privy too until you see (and hear) the random band start a new song. Great. Performance.
Still, you snag the last seat at the bar, waving to the bartender when she sees you. You barely get the seat warm before she’s sliding your usual in front of you.
“It’s on the house tonight,” she yells.
“What?” You shake your head. “No the fuck it’s not.”
She leans closer so she doesn’t have to yell as loud. “You are my saving grace in this sea of assholes, so yes it is. We can fight about it later.”
“Fine,” you roll your eyes. You dip your hands underneath the bar to switch your diamond ring from your right to left hand.
Tonight, you’re married.
You got this ring when your last relationship ended so badly. It was a long time coming, and once you were finally able to see the other side, you went out and bought yourself an engagement ring. Just for you. A promise to yourself to start loving yourself harder, and going out with dickheads less.
So far, it’s been wonderful. You’re loving being alone. It was exhausting going on so many first dates, trying to love someone else instead of letting yourself heal.
It’s been two years of singleness for you now, and you’ve loved almost every day.
The “wedding” ring usually makes most of the guys turn the other way. A few that are oblivious will try talking to you, but once they glance at your hand, they excuse themselves.
It’s hysterical, if you’re honest.
But some, unfortunately, don’t give a damn.
Like the guy who has just squeezed his way into the seat next to you.
You roll your eyes and prepare yourself for the shallow conversations because, for some ungodly reason, the band decided now was a good time for a break.
“You come here often?”
Oh, for fuck’s sake. “Nope.”
“It’s a pretty good place,” the guy says, waving down the other bartender, his name is Nick. “You should come here more often.”
“Should I, now?”
“Yeah,” the guy grins. “You’ll see me.”
You roll your eyes so hard it nearly hurts.
“Wanna dance?”
“Not in the mood.”
“Can I buy you another drink?”
“No thanks.”
“Can I get you anything?”
“Why, do you work here?”
“Look, I’m just trying to be nice.” Ah, there it is. The “nice guy” line.
You turn your head, raising an eyebrow. “Good for you. I’m not interested.”
“Ooh,” he feigns hurt, holding an open hand to his chest. “Ouch.”
You shrug. “You’ll get over it.”
“Damn.”
“Mm.”
“You sure you don’t wanna dance?”
“I’m married,” you say easily, picking your glass up with your left hand to show off your ring. You don’t drink from your glass because you made the mistake of looking away for only a moment, so now you’re paranoid that he might’ve slipped something in it.
The guy looks around, then back to you. “I don’t see a husband.” Oh, he sounds so smug. Like he’s pulled one over on you. Moron.
“He’s on a work trip.”
“Well, he’s not here.”
“You don’t want to get on his bad side, dude.”
“Oh really? What’s he do for a living?”
“He works for the FBI.” The lie slips from your mouth before you can stop it, and you almost laugh.
It’s something you’ve pulled from the countless guys that have said they work for the FBI, but have no badge to show for it. It’s always cracked you up. You’re aware there’s an FBI office around here, but you doubt a greasy, blackout drunk works for them. Let alone more than five greasy, blackout drunks in one night.
“The FBI, huh?” The guy says, just taking it in stride. “What’s his name?”
Right as you’re about to make one up until Vanessa can get back over here to threaten security, two arms slip around your waist.
You’re ready to throw caution to the wind along with your fists, but the owner of the arms says, “Just go with it, I’m Aaron.”
You turn your head to see a very handsome older man peering down at you, a smile on his lips that you can’t help but mirror. Something about his face has your gut screaming that you can trust him, so you play along.
“Honey! I thought you were in Texas!” You throw your arms around his neck for good measure, and also for a moment to casually get a good whiff of his cologne. Goddamn. You’ll gladly be his fake-wife. Any day. Forever.
“I was,” Aaron says, squeezing you before letting you go. He moves to stand next to you, his arm around your waist in a protective manner. “We landed early, wanted to surprise you.” He kisses your knuckles to keep up the act, and then settles his eyes on the man who was bothering you.
“You must be the husband,” the guy mutters bitterly. “You really work for the FBI?”
Oh, fuck, you think. This guy just doesn’t give up. A few future scenarios flash before your eyes, but the one most alarming is a fight erupting, which isn’t all that far-fetched. You’d never be able to come back if you caused something like that.
But before you can stumble through some excuse, Aaron is pulling out a badge. An actual badge.
“Supervisory Special Agent Hotchner. I’m the unit chief of the BAU,” he says easily, holding his badge out for as long as it takes the guy to inspect it. You have no clue what BAU stands for, but you’re just thanking whatever Gods might be real that this is happening.
The idiot is scowling by the time Aaron puts his badge away. He leaves without a word.
Your jaw nearly drops as you watch the guy go, and literally leave the bar. You had hopes that he’d leave you alone, but leaving the bar entirely is even better.
Aaron’s arm slips from around your waist as he moves to take the now empty seat next to you. All the while you’re gawking at him like you’re in some fever dream.
When he catches your eyes, he says, “What?”
“Am I dreaming?” You blurt. “Do you really work for the FBI?”
He chuckles and pulls out his badge again, holding it out to you where you can read it. And sure as shit, he’s an actual FBI agent. What the fuck.
You look up as he pulls his badge away. “Did you hear me tell the guy my husband worked for the FBI?”
Aaron shakes his head. “That was pure luck. By the way,” he holds his hand out to you. “I’m Aaron.”
“Y/N,” you shake his hand, smiling at the fact that Aaron wanted to go through the official pleasantries and that you got to feel how soft his hand is again. “Thank you for that. I thought he’d never leave.”
“No worries. And it’s best he did, I really didn’t feel like arresting anyone tonight.”
“Arresting him? For what?”
“Well for starters, harassment. But since that usually doesn’t hold up very well, I’d have to say it was for his cocaine addiction.”
Your eyes widen. “He was doing coke?”
“Well, not out in the open, of course, but there were traces of it on his nose and his eyes had that look to them. Addicts are easy to spot when you run into them enough.”
Who the hell is this guy?
“Oh, and forgive me, what’s your husband’s name?” Aaron gestures down at your left hand. “I might know him, but I can’t say that I recognize you.”
“Oh,” you move the ring back to your right hand, much to Aaron’s surprise. “I’m not married. I only put it on the left hand to try to avoid assholes like that.”
“I see,” Aaron nods, and if you’re not mistaken, he almost looks pleased.
Vanessa returns to get Aaron’s drink, and then gives you a look.
You want to scream, yes, I’m well aware he is dangerously attractive and that he’s talking to me but don’t you dare say a word to embarrass me.
Instead, you say, “Can you make me another?”
She nods in understanding and pours out your drink, setting off to make a second after sliding Aaron his beer.
“So,” you turn your body and prop your head in your palm. “What’s got an FBI agent in a bar on a Tuesday night?”
He takes a long swig of his beer before answering. “What’s the real story behind that ring on your hand?”
“Answer for an answer,” you sing, smiling at Vanessa when she brings you your drink. She leaves without a word, raising her eyebrows at you.
“The cases can be rough,” Aaron says vaguely, bringing your attention back to him. “You?”
“Got it as a promise to myself to never date another prick ever again,” you chuckle, gazing down at the ring. “It’s worked its magic, so far.”
“So far?”
“I’m talking to you, aren’t I?”
He smiles through his next swig of beer.
+++
It becomes a routine, you and Aaron sharing a drink at the bar.
To your surprise, he has the same views as you about alcohol. It’s fun to have one drink, but getting wasted and blacking out isn’t.
It’s refreshing, if you’re honest. Everyone your age wants to get absolutely shitfaced every time they go out, and that’s just never been for you.
It helps that Aaron is older. Well— You’re not sure if it helps or not. Because he is significantly older, the farthest you two have gone is sharing a drink at the bar. He usually leaves first, needing to get home to his son, to do more case work, or there was one time when he actually got a call about a case mid-drink. He was gone for two weeks after that.
But he always comes back, and he always finds you here, at this bar.
You mostly come every night to keep Vanessa company for an hour or two. To give yourself a break from the chaos of reality and to give her a familiar face in the sea of drunken customers.
Every night that Aaron isn’t here, Vanessa asks you where he is. Like you would know (you only do if he tells you of a possible up and coming case). Like you have his number (you don’t). Like you care (you don’t want to admit that you do).
“No Daddy tonight?” Vanessa teases, sliding you your drink.
“If you don’t stop calling him Daddy, I swear to God.”
“Oh, don’t swear to Him. He doesn’t need to get involved.”
You send a glare her way, but you’re holding back a laugh.
“Is he still on a case?” She asks, trying to be serious again.
You shrug. “Who knows. They can last pretty long. He was gone two weeks for the last one.”
“Keeping track, are we?” She raises an eyebrow.
“Shut up.”
“I’m just saying, you two are killing me here, sharing drinks and not saying how you feel. It’s torture to watch you every week, you know.”
“He’s like...twenty years older than me. Or something.”
“And?” She scoffs. “Age is but a number. You’re an adult. He’s an adult. It’s fine.”
You shrug. “He probably just sees me as a friend. He would’ve given me his number or something by now, right?”
“I dunno, men are weird. But he’s older, he’s probably scared to make a move, scared he’ll make you uncomfortable.”
You shrug again. You appreciate her trying to show you the possibilities, the logical reasons for why the two of you haven’t gone any further from the bar, but you aren’t sure what to believe. Plus, it’s been a week since you’ve seen him. The last time you two shared a drink, he didn’t say anything about a case.
So, he’s either on a case again, or has stopped coming.
The latter thought has you debating getting shitfaced wasted for the first time in years. Being blackout drunk would probably hurt you less than if it’s true that he’s just suddenly ditched you.
But what stops you is when Vanessa runs back over, eyes wide. “Just spotted your hottie.”
Oh, now he’s my hottie? “What?” You inwardly scold yourself for sounding a little too giddy at the prospect of him being here.
But if he’s here, why isn’t he sitting next to you?
Vanessa answers that one for you. “At a table in the back. He’s with friends I think.”
Friends? Never mind then on sharing a drink with him. “Oh, cool.”
Vanessa looks like she wants to say something, but is called away to another customer.
You don’t want to butt in with Aaron’s time with friends, so you stay at the bar, facing forward, nursing your one drink. Your mind conjures a plan in two seconds flat: finish your drink, head out for the night and discreetly look in Aaron’s direction, hopefully catch his eye, but if not, just go home and...shower and go to sleep.
Because if he wants to see you, he will. If he doesn’t, then he won’t.
Good plan.
Or at least, it is, until Aaron is sliding up beside you.
Your heart launches itself into your throat. You don’t say anything because you have no idea what to say. You were too busy assuming he’d rather be with his friends (which is...fine because it’s not like the two of you are...dating) to notice him walking up.
He says something for you, though. “Hey.”
Well, he might as well have stayed silent. What are you supposed to do with that?
“Hey,” you return casually, then offer a small smile. “Thought you’d be gone longer.” You operate on the assumption that he was on a case.
And he was. “This one actually worked in our favor.” He leans his elbows onto the bar, and naturally your eyes follow the movement. He’s not in a stuffy suit like the last few times, but he’s still in a dress shirt, with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows.
Arms. You’re a complete sucker for arms, and he’s practically teasing you like this.
“That’s good,” you comment, taking a sip from your drink. “Here to celebrate?”
“Yeah, we are.”
Nick brings Aaron his beer, thankfully, because you know Vanessa would’ve made some not-so-vague comment about Aaron being up here -- and maybe let an “accidental” Daddy comment slip.
To your surprise, Aaron sits down.
Your eyebrows furrow. “I thought you’re here with friends?”
Aaron looks over his shoulder and shrugs. “Just my team, yeah. I imagine they’re tired of me, though.”
You doubt that’s the case, but you know that if you say that, he’ll just brush it off.
“Not even gonna introduce me?” You tease instead, but you honestly want to smack yourself. You need to get a better hold on your word vomit. Inviting yourself is insanely rude.
Aaron’s eyebrows raise slightly, clearly not expecting you to say that — or to even want to be introduced to his team. “They’re a lot,” he says. “They’ll make a big deal out of this.”
“This?” You question, gesturing shortly between the two of you. “What is this?”
“What do you want it to be?” He asks carefully, averting his eyes shyly.
“Well,” you exhale dramatically, swirling your drink. “I think when you’ve shared a drink with a woman more than...twenty times, it should at least be considered dating.” You cut your eyes in his direction, your chest swelling as you see a grin breaking out on his face.
“I think I’m a bad date,” he says, confusing you. He chuckles, adding, “You don’t even have my number!”
“I’ll get it at the end of tonight,” you say, touching his arm gently for reassurance. “Come on, I think the back of my head is burning from how hard they’re staring.”
He looks through the corner of his eyes and sighs. “I’m sorry in advance for them.”
“No need to apologize,” you shrug. “Friends can be the worst. Vanessa has already started asking questions about you.” You nod toward the bartender that is feigning interest in clearing a space behind the bar.
“I figured,” Aaron murmurs. “Okay.” He slides off the stool, grabbing his beer in one hand, and holding his other one out to you.
Your heart jumps harshly when you take his hand. It’s warm and soft and secure, everything you want and need. You grab your drink in your free hand, giving Aaron’s hand a reassuring squeeze.
As soon as you and Aaron approach the table, the older gentleman is punching the one with tattoos. “Pay up.”
Aaron witnesses the cash exchange and stares at them tiredly. “Seriously, guys?”
Meanwhile, you’re holding back a giggle.
“Well, hello,” the woman with the colorful fashion sense says. “Introduce us!”
Aaron looks ready to pretend like he doesn’t know any of them, so you step up and say, “He told me you guys would be like this.”
That gets him laughing, and he finally says, “Y/N, this is Penelope, Emily, JJ, Spencer, Derek, and Dave.” Each person nods, waves, or smiles when their name is called.
“I’ll try to remember,” you joke. “But no promises.”
You squeeze Aaron’s hand in yours, trying to get him to loosen up. He does, barely, so when he tugs on your hand, silently asking you to step closer to him so his arm can fit around your waist, you oblige.
“What was the bet about?” You ask, nodding toward the men who exchanged cash a bit ago. It was Dave and Derek if you’re remembering names correctly.
“Rossi thought Hotch was going to bring you back over here, but I didn’t agree,” Derek says, nudging Dave’s arm. “I didn’t think you’d go for him.”
“Well, that’d be embarrassing if I went for someone else, considering we’re dating,” you chuckle, leaning your head back to look up at Aaron.
“Dating? So it’s official?” Emily asks, looking a little more excited than you thought any of them would.
“I think it was official the first time we met,” you snicker. “He pretended to be my husband so some dickhead would leave me alone.”
Aaron’s arm tightens around your waist at the memory.
“Okay,” Penelope grabs her drink, then moves over next to you, linking your arm with hers. “Hotch, we’re stealing her. We need details.”
Aaron doesn’t look like he wants to let go at all, but you press a kiss to his cheek. “Told you it’d be fine,” you whisper to him.
He surprises you by pressing a kiss on your lips. Midway through, your brain reminds you that this is technically your first kiss with him. And it’s in front of his friends. Swoon.
After so many dates with guys who were ashamed to be showing any sort of affection toward a woman, it’s nice to find a man who doesn’t care who sees his affection.
What can you say? After dating so many boys, it’s nice to finally find a man.

Discord pt 103
[Date: 25/03, 12:17 AM GMT - 25/03, 3:41 AM GMT]
[CW for drug mention, descriptions of violence, torture mention, suffocation mention]
[Page appears in chat and begins a game of “Smile Charades” by telling the server to draw their attention to their Spotify playlist called “The Court?”, which consists of the following songs: “Break My Mind” by Dagames, “I’m the Bad Guy” by Caleb Hyles, “Echo” by Crusher-P, “Break the Rules” by Charlie XCX, “Discord” by The Living Tombstone, “The Fine Print” by The Stupendium, “I Can’t Decide” by Scissor Sisters, “Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing” by Set it Off, “Entropy” by Awkward Marina, “Happy Pills” by Weathers, “The Pitiful Children” by Eric William Morris, and “Monster” by KIRA. The server then proceeds to guess what Page could be trying to imply by this choice of songs. The following conversation ensures:]
Tumblr media
jayyyyyyyy: “oh, happy pills is such a good song! kinda makes me sad in a way tho, ykno? its so upbeat but its basically about taking drugs so youre not truly yourself, ykno?”
Page 👑: “....
:)”
Jack the Observer 👁: “:)”
jayyyyyyyy: “huh, kinda makes me wonder if those plants are the result of drugs? or maybe theyre not, i might be looking at this the wrong way,”
Page 👑: “....”
jayyyyyyyy: “ah, either way its fine! just me wondering out loud, ykno? :]”
Page 👑: “:)”
Tumblr media
jayyyyyyyy: “wow, what a unique and interesting message! thank you for the playlist, page, its really eye opening and neat to listen to :]”
Page 👑: “:)”
jayyyyyyyy: “wow, what a fun song about partying and breaking the rules! ,i sure hope, none of ,the court does that!, :]”
Page 👑: “:)”
jayyyyyyyy: “ooo i cant decide is a good one, a classic, especially for those in uh. *looks at writing smudged on wrist* ...the my little pony fandom...”
Page 👑: “....”
jayyyyyyyy: “its so cool! love how the singer has conflicting feelings about their attachment to the one theyre torturing, how they ultimately have to decide whether they want to be good and spare their life, or if they want to continue with the torture”
Page 👑: “:)”
[After a few minutes, the server wonders why Page is being so quiet and only responding in “:)”]
Tumblr media
jayyyyyyyy: “nono, its okay, its like a yes or no thing
quiet for no, a smile for yes
is that right, page?”
Page 👑: “:)”
jayyyyyyyy: “pog! alright”
jayyyyyyyy: “okay, so still gotta find what youre picking up from this
are you not a big fan of concerts either?”
Page 👑: “....”
jayyyyyyyy: “oh, you like em?”
Tumblr media
Page 👑: “:)
....”
jayyyyyyyy: “okay, you do like concerts! something else too tho”
[After a few minutes of conversation among the server members asking Page whether he liked concerts, or if being with the Court was like being in a concert, or if he wanted to continue the conversation in the direction of the topic of concerts, or if he wanted to talk about other topics, all of which were met with a resounding silence from Page-]
Tumblr media
[jayyyyyyyy: “music?”]
Page 👑: “:)”
Tumblr media
donti (e) (child): “music! alright
want to narrow the topic some more, page?”
Page 👑: “:)”
donti (e) (child): “so im assuming this is about your playlist?”
Page 👑: “:)”
Tumblr media
donti (e) (child): “do you want us to focus on... lyrics?”
Page 👑: “:)”
Tumblr media
donti (e) (child): “so like the tone?”
jayyyyyyyy: “well i think we already get the vibe, ykno”
donti (e) (child): “or the feel of all the songs together?”
Page 👑: “:)....”
Tumblr media
donti (e) (child): “is there a common thread were supposed to be seeing?
Page 👑: “:)
[After some deliberation, it turned out that the common thread wasn’t about the laurels or drugs, but was about specific songs.]
Tumblr media
jayyyyyyyy: “alright! so youre focusing on uhhh
break my mind
im the bad guy
echo
discord 50/50
wolf in sheeps clothing
entropy 50/50
happy pills 50/50
and monster”
Page 👑: “:)”
Tumblr media
[jayyyyyyyy: “does "im the bad guy" apply to crown here?”]
Page 👑: “:)....”
jayyyyyyyy: “aight
is crown one of the common demoninators here?”
Page 👑: “:)....”
jayyyyyyyy: “aight
uhhh
im the bad guy is about.. fuck, i half remember half dont
if i remember correctly, the villain is explaining that whatever evils theyve faced before, shes much more powerful than them, and doesnt need their assistance because shes fine on her own
but
im guessing page is more focusing on. Uh”
Page 👑: “:)”
Tumblr media
jayyyyyyyy: “oh! okay
okay, i got it
hm.. echo is about.. well, its kinda hard to say
let me look at the lyrics again
actually, this song is a perfect way to sum up the courts situation
"the echo in the mirror"
like.. youre fighting yourself? youre trapped in yourself, fighting yourself to be free”
Page 👑: “:)”
jayyyyyyyy: “pog! alright
so uhh
so far we have uhh
being stuck and fighting yourself is something im seeing rn
and the other one.. i think its better if i dont say it
am i right on the fighting yourself theme tho?”
Page 👑: “:)”
Tumblr media
Ethza: “someone that's not crown??
"someone else"”
Page 👑: “:)”
Ethza: “OKAY
didnt expect that
so who
not crown
themselves?”
Page 👑: “:).....”
Ethza: “hm
eachother?”
donti (e) (child): “are,,, are the people who wear the crowns... pulling at the strings of their body??”
Tumblr media
Page 👑: “....”
Ethza: “Hm”
jayyyyyyyy: “okay so
im assuming its crown and the court?”
Ethza: “but its not crown
its someone else”
Page 👑: “:)”
jayyyyyyyy: “hmm”
Ethza: “that was my first guess
so
someone else”
Tumblr media
jayyyyyyyy: “okay! okay
and probably obvious but youre being controlled by your court version?”
Ethza: “but something else is controlling you”
Page 👑: “:)”
Ethza: “is it your court self?
the laurels?
something else?
feel free to respond to those separately”
jayyyyyyyy: “what, pray tell, the fuck are the laurels”
Page 👑: “:)”
Tumblr media
[Ethza: “the laurels?”]
Page 👑: “....”
[Ethza: “something else?”]
Page 👑: “....:)”
Tumblr media
jayyyyyyyy: “alright
hmmmm okay so
court selves are controlling the og selves, and crown is manipulating the court”
Ethza: “the court selves....aren't what they seem?”
Page 👑: “:)”
Ethza: “i was really hoping that wouldn't be right”
jayyyyyyyy: “well i dont think the court selves are evil”
Ethza: “i don't know if we'd call them good”
Tumblr media
jayyyyyyyy: “theyre being manipulated, ykno? and theyre.. kinda stuck in an unwinable situation
well yea but like
either they let their alternate selves be free and they literally suffocate, or they let themselves be free and their alternate selves suffocate
and a while, youd want fresh air, no matter how good of a person you are”
[Ethza: “i don't know if we'd call them good”]
Page 👑: “:)”
jayyyyyyyy: “alright so theyre not good
obv im still suspicious that a lot of it is bc of circumstances but still evil”
Ethza: “...hey page”
Page 👑: “:)”
Ethza: “are they something we know?”
Tumblr media
Page 👑: “....:)”
Tumblr media
jayyyyyyyy: “i really cant think of anything else tho

introducing benji !!
Tumblr media
[ FROY GUTIERREZ // 20 // CIS MALE // HE/HIM // MUSE J ] can you believe BENJAMIN ‘BENJI’ VALENCIANO is apart of the stellar world tour? the industry has dubbed him THE CHARLATAN and he has quite the reputation. sources say he is [ ENGAGING ] and [ ASSERTIVE ], but can also be [ VINDICTIVE ] and [ QUICK-TEMPERED ]. however, he is best described by the song [ SUPER RICH KIDS ] by [ FRANK OCEAN ]. i can’t to see what the stellar world tour has in store for him.
bio & pinterest
hi hi !! i'm sure you guys will recognize this as a reoccuring theme sooner rather than later, but i have absolutely no idea what i'm doing at any given moment, so i'm just gonna dive into a quick introduction to benji and hope for the best ! if you are interested in some slightly more organized thoughts i would recommend taking a look at his bio ( which i just fixed the link for because i'm dumb and it was broken this whole time haha, so let me know if there are any problems! ) & i hope you guys enjoy :)
okay so benjamin is born in greenwich, connnecticut, a town famous almost exclusively for housing some of the wealthiest families in america and not much else. his moms are both lawyers, cutthroat defense attorneys that pay for the family's summers in europe and vacation homes down south with somebody's elses blood money. he's an only child, and their scrutiny is merciless as it curates an envy for the anonymity of the shadows. their expectations pile too high in his throat, and he fears the day he chokes and lets them down, for it is inevietable. but he knows they'll do anything to get him across that finish line, walking across the stage at a prestigous law school he couldn’t care less about, which in an odd way is more terryifying than it is comforting.
music is not something that even crosses his mind until much later in life. it was never an option, still isn't, so he decides early that it is not worth the energy of entertaining, even as he finds peace only when the music is loud enough to drown out everything else. he is desperate to mold himself into somebody worth his mothers' undying affections, not just charades and party tricks. but they are patient with him nonetheless, smiles tight and forgiving through it all, and his stomach turns more often than not with the way pity flashes in a matching set of cool eyes, lightning-quick.
benji is created in just sixteen hours and thirty-seven minutes, an accident. it's a textbook definition of overnight fame, a shoddy youtube video gaining far more traction than it was ever meant to. he's nineteen and only in his second semester at college, and music was never the plan, but neither was law school, really. it's a headache, dizzying to imagine taking a life where he steps outside of his family's hold, and he is forced to make a real decision for the first time in his life. so he does.
in the same breath that he signs a contract with the label, they are prying his music from his fingers, the lyrics of missing a life that was never his to begin with are lifted away and delivered to somebody that looks more the part of soft and remoreseful. ( cue lincoln entering stage left, hello bb ) rather, he’s fitted with quick and aggressive lines, still technically his words but molded in a way that don’t fit right in his mouth. they tell him it fits his image better, and doesn’t he want to be famous? the worst part is that it works, his fans eat it up, and demand more, more, more. anger thrums beneath his skin, obvious even as he shoves it down like always, but any pr agent could spot it from a mile away, and they tell him to use that instead. he is familiar with the use of disguises, years of sneaking around in his own home make excellent practice, but it leaves a bad taste in his mouth all the same. nobody has ever allowed him the vice of anger before, though. he knows a lifeline when he sees one, and he runs with it. benji realizes all too late that this is not the freedom he thought he would be granted, realizes he should have known better, that he let himself get passed over from his mothers’ iron grasp to the label’s. he decides he prefers the way disappointing others lasts longer and feels better than chasing approval, and lets this time be different.
[ H E A D C A N O N S ]
( i know this is all dramatic backstory so far lmao, let me introduce you to who this dumb asshole really is )
more than anything else, benji is all bark with no bite. he’ll curse you out for accidentally waking him up at 7:30 instead of 8:00, and hold the grudge for hours with icy stares and glorified pouting, like he’s got a personal vendetta for making himself miserable. he’s often a bit standoffish, distant in the apathetic way that you could cry on his shoulder for hours and still not hear a word out of him, look over and he’ll offer a placating grin and a shrug. he tells the truth to a fault, blunt and unforgiving and too impatient to waste time playing games with lies and faux-affection. even with all his own bouts of irritability, the kid is an absolute idiot when it comes to reading people and understanding social cues and he’s often left blind-sided when people are pissed at him without explicitly spelling it out. still, he doesn’t hold any actual distaste for anybody on the tour, floating between groups based on whoever’s personality suits him better that day, unless they are the ones to escalate the matter, in which case, good luck charlie. forgive-and-forget isn’t really in his vocabulary. once he makes a decision, it’s near impossible to get him to change his mind.
when he wants to be, or if you’ve entertained his interests in one way or another, he warms up and and indulges you with his internal monologue ( your chances are better if there’s a camera around, he doesn’t often bother wasting the energy otherwise, but still ) actually, it is not as hard as it sounds to gain his favor. crack a dumb joke about pr or offer him half a snickers bar and you’ve already got a foot in the door, baby. he reveals his friendship in odd ways — sarcastic comments and random compliments, nonchalant and declared like fact rather than opinion.
the real shortcut into his brain is alcohol. flash forward to like 11pm on any given day and the asshole is chugging fireball like it’s the first sip of water he’s had after years of dehydration, suddenly all bright grins and loud laughs, eager to collect drinking buddies like playing cards. it’s a harsh juxtaposition, from brooding and fabricated to giggling and tipsy, and his tolerance isn’t nearly as high as he likes to pretend it is, so he’s drunk off his ass and acting a fool more often than not. he’ll trade secrets easily, charming and tongue loose in a way that it never is when he’s sober. ( don’t even get me started with the amount of people he hooks up with, oh boy ) drunk benji’s a real headache for the crew, considering he’s not of drinking age yet in america and he’s got a rigid mask to maintain in order to keep up his charades and remain relevant. he refuses to be ashamed of it, though, and he’s adamant to make things difficult for them, relishing instead in impulsive decisions he never got the chance to make for most of his life. long story short, in a pinch, buy him a handle and he’ll probably like you.
when i say benji will try anything once, i mean it seriously, offer him literally anything and odds are that he’ll say yes. it’s kind of ridiculous. his self-destructive streak is always up for a good time, wink wink ( this doesn’t just mean drugs or anything, like dare him to eat an entire jar of nutella in under 10 minutes? where’s the spoon )
unfortunately he’s a stereotypical rich kid through and through, and he’s got the nicotine addiction to show for it. he won’t even smoke cigarettes out of the principle of the thing ( unless he’s blackout drunk, in which case, oh boy, watch your pockets ) but he’s got at least two juuls on him at any given moment. nobody knows how he manages it, but he’s got an extensive supply of the mango flavored pods even though they’re banned, because they’re the only ones he’ll use. he’s got lots of connections, and the fact that he uses them for this pretty much sums up his entire personality.
you would think that benji, with his reformed rich kid attitude and all his burning anger and sarcastic eye-rolling, would only drink expensive coffee, black and strong, right? no. he’ll walk up to any barista, pissed just to be awake before noon and gaze as hard and cold as hell itself frozen over, and order himself a frozen caramel frappuccino with extra whipped cream and extra caramel drizzle on top, deadpan and monotone. to add insult to injury, he’ll chase it by shotgunning a can of redbull, living off of unhealthy amounts of caffeine to have enough energy to deal with the others at all times. it’s ridiculous.
he’s grudgingly okay with the fact that his social media accounts have been sacrificed for his image, wiped clean and shaped into the public figure he is today. however, he guards his spotify account with his life, keeping it private and refusing to monitor this aspect of his life. his music taste is everything to him, and while he’s willing to plaster songs he’s never listened to all over his instagram story, his spotify is an extension of him, and he fights like a dog to keep it that way.
last but not least, benji’s fashion is atrocious. really, for the greater good nobody should let him dress himself, ever, and they usually don’t. he’s got quite the bad reputation amongst the stylists, infamous for scowling at the high-fashion look they want to stuff him in, refusing to hear reason to the fact that he has to wear makeup to the red carpet. whenever he knows beyond a doubt that no cameras will be waved in front of his eyes, he practically lives in sweats like it’s his religion, paired with genuinely whichever shirt he first lays eyes on. ( listen, he grew up filthy rich and just bought his first pair of sweatpants when he went to college, let him indulge bb ) some members will swear up and down to the fact that they saw him walk around in mysteriously stained sweatpants and a stolen back-up dancer’s skin tight, hot pink mesh crop top for a full hour into rehearsal before he woke up enough to realize his mistake. he’ll bite your head off for even bringing it up, but glance down and double-check what he’s wearing just in case.
oh wait also he’s dyslexic. words blur together in a way that makes writing lyrics a bitch, and just one song take him weeks to finish. it makes the sting of having them ripped away even worse. ( also i get to spell things wrong in the group chat and it’s in character lmao )

Album: Glory
Release Date: August 26, 2016
Another album cover, another Britney face shot. Aptly titled since it’s a close return to her former glory, at least musically and lyrically. It had been 5 years since her last top ten hit and a chart topping album (Femme Fatale for both). This album didn’t accomplish either, but everyone liked the sound much better!
She also met her current super hot young boyfriend on the set of one of the music videos off this album. Go look at his Instagram, I’ll wait. Rawr.
This is the third potential contender for Britney’s Holy Trinity.
Time for Britney to serve us greatness again!
Tumblr media
Pretty Girls | 5 /10
*sigh* I don't hate this song, but it's not good. My boyfriend, however, LOVES this song. Mr. Rock Music Only would not stop singing it when it first came out. He called it a perfect bubblegum pop song so I'll just agree with him on this.
Also, this one wasn’t on Glory, thank god, but it was released during this era.
Tom's Diner | 8 /10
Fun fact: Britney never finished recording this cover with Giorgio Moroder. He gave interviews noting that she was probably busy. Let me show you what she was actually doing.
Tumblr media
Yes, she was in Hawaii on vacation, far from the studio.
Another fun fact: She recently revealed that she forgot she covered it and she actually texted her manager saying this would be a fun song to cover.
Also not on this album but from this era.
Invitation | 7 /10
I don't know if this made the *best* album opener, but I really enjoy it regardless. That falsetto - yes ma'am! And the lyrics are so subtly sexy: Yes or no, but no maybes / Not gonna beg so don't make me 🎶 ...  I'm wet.
Tumblr media
Do You Wanna Come Over? | 6 /10
Even though I don't really like it, I have to admit it's catchy and, considering the Spotify numbers, the GP probably would've pushed this up the charts if it had been released as a proper single + video.
Tumblr media
Make Me | 5 /10
I go back and forth on this song. When I haven't listened to it in a while, I'm convinced it's perfect, but a few more listens convinces me it's not. It definitely sets the mood for the album and what she was trying to achieve, but 1) G-Eazy does absolutely nothing for this song and didn't need to be there and 2) It's really hard to understand what she's singing. If you're going to release a single to the GP, a damn lead single, maybe make it a song that's easy for them to understand and sing along to.
Tumblr media
Private Show | 5.5 /10
This had to grow on me. The chipmunk voice is a little grating. But it's fun! I love the way she says "work it, work it, boy watch me work it!"
Man On The Moon | 6 /10
Oooh, more bubblegum pop. I can't decide if I think this song is good or just corny af. Lyrics are pretty solid.
Just Luv Me | 7.5 /10
Should've been a single. Maybe not lead, but it's a better r&b-styled effort than Make Me is. Her voice sounds better on this one as well.
Clumsy | 5 /10
Oops! Ok, talk about basic club music lmao. But I LOVE how catchy it is! Probably shouldn't have been a teaser single, though ... it's not that strong of a song.
Tumblr media
Slumber Party | 8 /10
THIS would've been better as the lead single than Make Me. But I also believe it’s a terrible second single. Also also this did not need a remix with Tinashe. Better promo would've propelled this further up the charts imo because that video is muy caliente. I love her deeper/half moaning vocals.
Peep the video to see her lick milk up in front of her man. Rawr.
Just Like Me | 6.5 /10
The lyrics aren't very convincing to me, but the slowed down chorus gives the song a little more depth. It's also sort of forgettable, though.
Love Me Down | 9 /10
One of the best tracks on the album tbh. The way she sings lo-lo-lo-lo-love me is instantly iconic and classic Brit. The half spoken/half sung nature is fucking flawless, too.
Hard To Forget Ya | 2 /10
It's not hard to forget this fucking song, though. The chorus sinks what could be a masterpiece. The verses are excellent!
What You Need | 7.5/10
In spite of my better senses, I do like this song. I'll always maintain that her voice is too thin to pull off what could be a masterpiece of a fucking song, but that doesn't stop it from being pretty damn good. The way she plays with the words when she sings is unmatched.
Better | 6.5 /10
It's good! But it sounds too much like Justin Bieber-style and not Britney Spears, the legend-style. You could put anyone on this song (JB, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, especially Selena Gomez) and it would work.
Change Your Mind | 10 /10
This is the best song on the album, bar none. Should've been a standard edition song AND a single. This is the lead single Britney needed. It capitalizes on some of the trends currently out there, but with a twist. A Britney twist.
Liar | 7 /10
This is probably the most radio friendly song on the album. I think the GP would've eaten it up, albeit it would've enjoyed a very temporary existence. But Spotify numbers don't lie ...
If I'm Dancing | 9 /10
I wish she would make a whole album of songs like this. It feels so transcendental and exotic, a sound Britney hasn't really explored before. I don't really know wtf the lyrics mean, but I'm still here for it.
Coupure Electrique | 8 /10
I was slightly disappointed when she announced there was a track called Blackout and then it turned out to be this. Don't get me wrong, it's a great song, but the French is ... nonsensical.
Mood Ring | 9 /10
If she wanted a moody first single, move this up to the standard edition and release it. The production, lyrics, everything about it puts Make Me to shame.
Slumber Party (ft. Tinashe) | 7 /10
Even though the song is essentially the same, I'm dropping a star from the original because Tinashe brought nothing to it. They need to stop trying to make Tinashe happen.
L E A K E D  V I D E O
There have (so far) been no leaked songs from this era, but it had its own controversy in the form of a music video. Britney teased a video for the lead single Make Me, which is entirely different from the one we actually got. There’s a whole convoluted story behind that. Anyhoo, I’ll let you decide if it’s good or not (spoiler alert: it’s not), but this shit riled up the fandom.

God, G-Eazy makes me want to gag.

PREMIERE + Q&A: Spirit Animal Releases “Karma” in Anticipation of Debut Album
Tumblr media
Spirit Animal isn’t your typical rock band. They don’t care about genres, labels, or boundaries, and their eclectic style has brought us yet another upbeat tune that we’re digging entitled “Karma.” It’s the type of song meant to be listened to at full volume, so you can hear every bit of the drums and bass, topped off with lead singer Steve Cooper’s powerful vocals. The track is the second single to be released from the band’s upcoming debut album Born Yesterday.
Cooper, along with guitarist Cal Stamp, drummer Ronen Evron, and bassist Paul Michel approach their music from any and every direction. The band draws inspiration everywhere from the Arctic Monkeys to Kendrick Lamar, and the result is a pleasantly dynamic, rhythmic, and at times even funky, rock sound. Their unique sound has unique origins, with Paul’s history in the D.C. hardcore scene, Ronen’s past studying at Berklee College of Music, and Steve’s early love for rap music.
Spirit Animal’s strategy when it comes to making music is that there is no strategy. They have no set process for making music, and the product is music that has such an effortless feel to it and you can basically hear how much fun they’re having. Though that effortless, fun sound will probably have you wanting to join in singing at the top of your lungs, their music is also incredibly reflective and intended to ignite your thoughts.
The band quickly gained attention after its first hit “The Black Jack White” which racked up over a million hits on Spotify and 2016’s “Regular World,” which reached 3 million hits. Fast forward to 2018 after tirelessly touring and working on music, Spirit Animal is finally giving us a full-length debut, which is music to our ears.
You can listen to Spirit Animal’s latest release “Karma” below:
youtube
We also got the scoop from Spirit Animal frontman Steve Cooper about what inspired the song, which artists he’s been loving, and more. Just keep reading to find out.
OTW: Your upcoming Atlantic Records debut, Born Yesterday, was largely written and recorded in the band’s backyard of Brooklyn.  How does the city landscape influence your creative process?
Steve: I wouldn't say that the urban terrain has much impact on us -- we're actually pretty outdoorsy -- but the people certainly do. One thing that has always unified us has been the desire to make music that can "touch all types." In New York, when you're in headphones cranking your demos or whatever you're working on, and you're jammed between 500 subway riders from every edge of the Earth, it's inspiring to picture them listening, too. What would they think? How would they react? Is there a way you can make this music more them and more you? There's always been a built-in creative challenge associated with this city, but it's not only because there are so many artists here. It's because there are so many people here.
OTW: What made you decide to announce your debut album with the song “Karma”?
Steve: We can't pretend it was planned in advance, but it does make a lot of sense in terms of how it was written, the cover art concept (an avatar whose components are assembling from every direction), and our general approach to genre and style. We flew from New York to L.A. to write this song. The producer, Ryan Petersen, traveled from Nashville having just moved away from L.A. The other co-writer, Nolan Sipe, drove up from San Diego day-of. We used Tenacious D's rehearsal space and borrowed gear. We then took the tune back to NY for post-production, did a good amount of long-distance idea swapping between the three cities, and actually wound up having to go down to Nashville to cut alternate lyrics (they didn't end up getting used). These days, it's not uncommon to cobble together old parts or to combine the home and pro studio pieces. But I think it's fair to say that this song has the most airline rewards points to redeem.
OTW: How do you feel Born Yesterday differs your earlier work?
Steve: We talk a lot about how we've changed each other and taken on each other's writing and stylistic tendencies. Inherent in this growth is a sonic cohesiveness, almost like a Venn diagram that slowly becomes a single oval. In our earlier work, there were both elements that we knew we wanted to move away from -- things we sometimes saw as crutches that we knew we could do very well (funk riffs, for instance) -- and elements that we knew could be potential strengths that we were rejecting or needing to find a way to incorporate more (pop/rap influences). A combination of time, which you can't rush, and a newfound creative license that came from working with more people, helped us shape what we now refer to as "the album we always wanted to make."
OTW: You guys have a big summer tour coming up, what’s the craziest experience you’ve had as a band on the road?
Steve: Since I'm writing this while hungry, I'm gonna go with The Great Burger Survival of 2016. We made the mistake of touring the upper midwest in the dead of winter (PRO TIP: don't) and road conditions had been horrible the whole trip. We made the requisite post-show McDonald's run despite the Minnesota snow and ordered our standard faves. For Cal, that's a cheeseburger meal. We divvied up the goods and got to noshing as Ronen, the warrior that he is, took the wheel instead of eating. Not 90 seconds later we boarded the highway on-ramp at a very reasonable speed, but even responsible Ronen was no match for the black ice. We skidded off the ramp, did a 240 across four lanes of traffic (Tony Hawk would have been proud) and slammed into the cement barrier, front-first. Stunned, we looked around the van to see what had happened. French fries were EVERYWHERE, sweet and sour smeared on my seat handle. I looked behind me to Cal, who was alone on the back bench. He raised his arm up, triumphant as Lady Liberty herself, gripping a fully intact burger. "Are you ok?," I asked. "My burger is," he said, and gave me a bite.
OTW: Who are some of your Ones to Watch artists?
Steve: This might seem like the easiest question, but since we're obsessed with new music, it's absolutely not. How about 25 "ones"?!
Husky Loops, Amber Mark, Sarah Reeves, Vicktor Taiwò, Octavian, Kim Petras, NVDES, Injury Reserve, Valee, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Lanks, Numb.er, Daniel Avery, Sarah Blasko, Olden Yolk, Ghost Bones, Moaning, SAINt JHN, Haley Heynderickx, Ross From Friends, ISLAND, Kadhja Bonet, Courtney Marie Andrews, Palace Winter, Saltwater Sun

Conversation
Magdalena Bay /r/Popheads Discord AMA [16/08/2019] Transcript
Q : Did you get your name from this iconic bop? [Sandra : Maria Magdalena]
MB : hahah no, Matt stole it from a literal person named Magdalena Bay // (they called her maggy bay)
Q : whats your biggest influence that sounds nothing like your own music
MB : we love PC Music even though we don't really sound like it
Q : out of everything you’ve made, what song is your all-time fave/which one are you the most proud of?
MB : We think Set Me Off is super underrated, but usually our fave is whatever the newest thing we write is
Q : Did Matt take up that offer at the DMV?
MB : hahaha NO
Q : whats the song you guys most had trouble with?
MB : hmmm probably move slow, we re-did the melody and production a few times before we settled on the disco vibes
Q : What made you guys decide to go for shorter song lengths, or was it somethjng that just happened naturally?
MB : We got tired of waiting so long to release official singles, wanted to do low-pressure quick songs that we could get out to our fans sooner!
Q : So like, where’s Voc pop on Spotify?
MB : hahah does anyone actually like that song?! It was the first pop thing we ever made and it was more of a learning experience for us than an actual song to us
Q : are you planning to tour europe anytime soon?
MB : we'd love to tour just need the right opportunity
Q : what's both of your favourite songs right now? also have you heard any of Caroline Polachek's music
MB : Actually one of our favorite songs right now is Door! Another is Ever Again (Robyn)
Q : one more: do you have any plans for an album in the future? Or are you just going with the flow
MB : yes we have album plans! Maybe next year
Q : Did you have a specific inspiration for Neon's music video, or was it just the whole vaporwave aesthetic in general?
MB : that video we actually didn't do ourselves, we found that archival footage of the couple and had that intro sequence sone but we sent it to our talented friend Matt Lewis who added the whole vaporwave element, we really weren't too aware of that whole world at the time! But it really worked well with Neon
Q : do you like the band Superorganism?
MB : haven't really listened to Superorganism, we'll check them out!
Q : Only thing I don’t like is the redbone cover to be honest with you and I’ve gone through your YouTube and soundcloud
MB : lol we respect that
Q : I really like your Redbone cover! What other songs would you like to cover?
MB : we always struggle to think of covers, was thinking of sourcing suggestions on Instagram so maybe we'll do that soon
Q : What is thr most difficult song of the creative process for you guys, is it, say, the lyrics, the melody, the mixing?
MB : probably lyrics, it's not that it's HARD but I get very particular about it and sometimes a little slow haha - Mica
Q : i just have to say, i think i've streamed your one song Only If You Want It a million times. it's such a bop and i think it's a great song to introduce people to your work. what was your inspiration for that song and the retro style music video?
MB : yes we think OIYWI really encapsulates what we're aiming to do musically, really glad you like it! Spice Girls, specifically Say You'll Be There, was a huge inspo. We really love that video but didn't have a plan for it AT ALL when we filmed all that footage of me with our vhs cam hahah so it was a mess but then we figured out the word art aesthetic and the bugs and it all came together
Q : How does it feel to be the highlight of my terrible day? Because once I saw the tweet I felt quite a bit better, plus my magbae playlist keeps me calm
MB : Thank you!! We made that cover ourselves so means a lot, and there's a little nod to each mini song in it which is fun
Q : have you ever covered songs that you decided against releasing?
MB : yes lol how did you know?? we did really weird attempts at promiscuous girl and rod stewart's if you think i'm sexy that will never see the light of day
Q : https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/264810236500639745/609503125677670418/magdalenabay.gif
MB : love the gif!!
Q : if a blackpink stan is called a blink is a magdalena bay stan called a mabay
MB : we think magbae is a good stan name
Q : what is the best/worst thing you've guys have encountered so far in the music industry??
MB : best/worst thing we've encountered in the music industry: one of the best things is finding our stuff being posted on r/popheads, we used to have to do it ourselves hahah, worst thing is dealing with shady industry people
Q : Any plans for shows in the Los Angeles area by the end of the year?
MB : re LA shows: we're working on it! probably yes
Q : Oh shoot i just thought of a very very improtany question i must know - Simply : Cats or Dogs
MB : DOGS
much later // we like cats too just dogs more :/
Q : Did you start making music for the fun of it, or did you actually have asperations to be famous?
MB : we started making music back in high school in a rock band and it just evolved from there. I (mica) never thought I would really do this until i had to graduate college and was like wait!!! I don't want a real job!! // Matt always knew he wanted to work in music
Q : magdalena bay, how would you guys describe your songwriting process?
MB : it's pretty different for each song, only thing that stays the same is that we write lyrics after melody, not all writers do that! but a song can start with a beat or chords or sometimes melody, from either of us!
Q : ooh I actually have one more question! what song of yours has the most meaning to you? whether it’s bc of the inspiration behind it or something else
MB : probably some of the unreleased stuff, but you'll hear it soon! a song called airplane is prob the most personal to me (mica)
Q : what artist(s) would you collab with, if you could pick any?
MB : soo many but Rina Sawayama is near the top of our list
Q : If you could travel back in time and impart one piece of advise to your early teenage selves, what would it be?
MB : START MAKING POP SOONER
Q : So do you sit down for hours and work on thinking of melodies or do they come to you randomly and you're like "whelp, time to record"
MB : both definitely happen, iphone voice memos are key
Q : Actually I do have a question, if y'all had a bigger budget, what would you be doing differently?
MB : blackpink-level music videos
Q : Favorite video games?
MB : We've just started playing video games and love zelda twilight princess but we're dumb and bad at it and are always stuck lol
Q : there are several users here in popheads who are trying to get into the music industry, if you have one tip you can give them, what would it be?
MB : try to do everything you can yourself- from music production to videos to graphics you will learn a lot and be less reliant on other people!! and you'll save money haha
Q : If yall dont thats chill but if yoy do whats your fav song from blackpink
MB : we like the one that goes dudududu
Q : Were you ever worried about a song with hashtag as a title/lyric? Or were you just that damn confident?
MB : yes we were worried lol
Q : would you play Minecraft
MB : don't know anything about it but matt's little sister plays it so sure
Q : we spoke about artists you'd like to work with so...what producers do you get inspiration from / would like to work with?
MB : definitely ag cook, Sophie, grimes, toro, also get a lot of influence from the classics like max martin, quincy jones, pharell
Q : What's one thing people might be surprised to learn about the both of you, respectively?
MB : Maybe that we started music playing in a progressive rock band (the opposite of pop) also matt is an amazing chef and mica is argentinian??

MB : BLACKOUT we listen to it every day
Q : is there any of your progressive rock stuff on the internet 🧐
Also: (you may have answered this already, skip if you have lol) why did you guys make such a genre switch?

Top 7 of 2017
This year has been a year of "dry" music listening for me. Even though I finally got Spotify this year and started listening to their song suggestions... I've still found myself most comfortable listening to funk, pop, acoustic groove stuff at the end of the day!
So without further ado, here is my Top 7 of 2017 (decided to lower it from 10... Because who listens to WHOLE albums that much anymore?)
7. Scary Pockets - Scary Pockets
Tumblr media
This great little funk cover band BARELY made it into my top 7 narrowly beating out Foo Fighters and Calvin Harris’ 2017 albums!  Re-imagined funk covers of modern hits like: “I Feel It Coming”. “Paris”, “Shape of You”, and much more make this worth checking out!  There are some hits and misses here, but I’m sure there will be something everyone can enjoy.
6. Jamiroquai - Automaton
Tumblr media
After 7 years in the shadows, the super funk and acid jazz band has re-surfaced with an album of futuristic proportions!  It took me a while to get into this album, but in the end, I really started to get captured by songs like: “Cloud 9″, “Superfresh”, “Summer Girl” and yes even the minor key (with key change) title track, “Automaton”.  Enjoy the sound of funk for the future!
5. Ed Sheeran - Divide (Deluxe)
Tumblr media
The most famous singer-songwriter on the planet has created another best-selling album this year.  Although I didn’t enjoy the majority of the songs like “Galway Girl”, but I still really liked a lot of it!  I believe “Shape of You” was most played song of the year and its pop sensibilities deserved that award.  Great songs include: “Castle on the Hill”, “What Do I Know”, “Dive”, and John Mayer guest-starring track, “How Would You Feel (Paean)”
4. U2 - Songs of Experience (Deluxe Edition)
Tumblr media
How does the “Best Band on the Planet” follow up the album they made every iTunes user download their last album whether they wanted to or not?  They put out an album that tries to further evolve and modernize their (already) eclectic sound.  After being ABSOLUTELY ROCKED at their Joshua Tree album, it was quite refreshing to listen to this (whole) album on long commutes.  Songs on repeat: “Lights of Home - St. Peter’s String Version)”, “The Blackout”, “You’re The Best Thing About Me”, “Get Out of Your Own Way”.
3. Dave Barnes - Who Knew Vol. 1 EP
Tumblr media
This EP that only recently released could not have come at a BETTER time.  I needed some new music and Dave Barnes (ALMOST) always delivers!  So glad he has returned to his funky, groovy, Motown-ish roots!  If you dig my taste in music, you GOT to get DB’s latest album!   I will probably evangelize his album whenever I can, and I even incepted my son, who now REALLY digs the first song on this ep album!  Go check out “Runs in the Family”!
2.  B. Reith - Heart On My Sleeve (Acoustic EP)
Tumblr media
If you like acoustic pop of any nature, you GOTTA listen to B. Reith (now known as Brian Reith).  Sorry there is no Spotify link, you can only listen to his music via iTunes or Apple Music.  This is one of the best acoustic guitar groovy music arrangement of songs I’ve heard in a while, so do yourself a favor and GET THIS EP ALBUM!  There‘s a reason it‘s #2 on my list!!!
Songs of the moment: “Roll With The Punches”, “Can‘t Stop Loving You”
1. John Mayer - The Search for Everything
Tumblr media
Last but not least, the return of the master, the originator, the douche. the self-centered, ok... you get the picture.  John Mayer has been SUPER polarizing as a person, but man... this man is a musical GENIUS!  If you don’t believe me, listen to each song and tell me I’m crazy!  This album has so much groove you will find yourself tapping along, wanted to sing with JM, “I still keep your shampoo in my shower, in case your want to wash your hair.  And I know that you probably found yourself some more somewhere, but I do not really care, cause as long as it is there... I still feel like your man...” #absoluteGOLD
Anyways, do yourself a favor, BUY YOURSELF THIS ALBUM or stream it on Spotify!  I GUARANTEE you will NOT be disappointed.
Standout Songs: SFLYM, In the Blood, Moving On and Getting Over, Rosie, Helpless, Changing... pretty much EVERY song on the record! ;)  Even the “Theme from ‘The Search for Everything’” is my alarm clock ringtone to wake up!
Happy New Year and May God bless you all!
