She'd used to wonder what was up there, in the stars, and dreamt of him, a boy, his smile a constellation she had charted.

But that had been before the nightmares came. Before the waiting rooms, before the headlights always racing closer.

Except, sometimes, she could have sworn he'd joined her there. An older face, his smile a little forced. But in her dreams, he might have held her hand. And then she'd scream herself awake, and spend the night with scribbled calculations.

She's certain that the readings aren't right. They've been a little too convenient since-- she isn't sure, but she first noticed several days before New York.

And something's pulling at the corners of her dreams. It's not the chemo or the car crash anymore. It's angry, but a little bit familiar.

It feels like someone's there, like someone's almost mirroring her breathing.

Except she's still alone. And her computer's on, her coffee's gotten cold, and she's got red ink smudged against her cheek.

“Oh, that’s a big tree,” Margaret observes, coming up so quick behind Buck he nearly scrambles out of his skin. She laughs it off. “The living room is already full. Where’s it going to go?”  Eddie smiles. “Bend over and I’ll show you,” he says, rubbing Buck’s shoulder when he inevitably bursts into a coughing fit at hide a bark of laughter.  She frowns. “Excuse me?”  “I didn’t say anything,” he replies, shrugs, and turns to face Buck. “I think if we go in through the backdoor, it’d be easier. We don’t have to move the table or take any photos off the wall.”  Buck, red-faced from holding back his laughter, nods. “Perfect idea, sweetheart.”

I feel very lucky to have this week off. It’s a waning Moon, which is a good time to rest and recuperate. I hope my US followers can manage this, especially since now “tis the season” for relentless media pressure to consume beyond our means. And the pressure to enjoy this family time together, sort of like the last movement of Shostakovich’s 5th symphony - “your business is rejoicing, your business is rejoicing.”
