✨Review✨ The Butterfly Bruises by Palmer Smith First of all I want to thank the author @spdevsmithwriter wholeheartedly for sending me a copy of her book. I don’t normally read poetry but I was pleasantly surprised by how she serves little slices of her memories in a way that you can experience them so vividly, so I’ve been reading them slowly between chapters of other books and really enjoying the peace and calm they convey. I particularly enjoyed the short stories at the end (I’m more used to short stories 😅) for they seem to be written with such care and emotion. Raw and interesting. All of them. Georgia Richter lives with her family in an apartment above their funeral home. Her dad handles the bodies while her mother tends to grieving families. Georgia and her twin brother, Peter, have grown up with the understanding that one day they will inherit the family business. But while Peter is fascinated by the hands-on learning their father provides, Georgia has no interest in running the funeral home her grandfather built. When Georgia’s grandmother dies, she discovers her ability to wake the ghosts of the recently deceased. The grief she feels in losing her grandmother is intense, and coupled with her strange new-found talent, Georgia’s anxiety begins to spiral. Her fear of dying becomes all-consuming. When her brother and close friend appear to dismiss and even mock her grief, Georgia copes by spending more and more time alone. The death of a classmate and the awkward friendship she forms with his ghost further intensify Georgia’s anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and isolation. Funeral Girl is categorized as YA, but I felt it read like an adult novel - just with teen protagonists. Even though Georgia has supernatural powers, the book is more contemporary fiction than fantasy. I was impressed by Ohland’s true-to-life depiction of OCD (although Georgia’s illness is never labeled as such) - not just the paralyzing effect it has on the individual, but also the impact of mental illness on family and friends. Despite themes of grief and anxiety, Funeral Girl doesn’t feel heavy. There’s also the loyalty and trust of family and friendship. Q: What was the last signed book you ordered or had signed in person?. 💎 On Friday, February 17, I went to Books of Wonder for the Revelle by Lyssa Mia Smith launch event! She was in conversation with Lauren Blackwood, Rochelle Hassan, and Meg Long. This event was so good, I loved the conversation and learning more about Revelle. ✨ Since the book is set in the 1920s, of course I had to dress the part for this event too! Any excuse to wear my flapper dress, and I received a lot of compliments on it. It was a fun event and I'm really glad I was able to go. 💃 If you haven't noticed yet, I'm a big fan of Moulin Rouge - Revelle is Moulin Rouge inspired but with MAGIC, lots of magic! And lots of family love for Luxe Revelle - I loved the relationship Luxe has throughout the story with her cousins - it was so heartwarming. There are a few different magical families on Charmant, the island just a ferry ride from New York - and some of the powers include being able to charm and make the customers desires (seemingly) come true, time-travel, healing, mind-reading, and making food or drink the best you've ever had. But of course, all this magic comes with a cost to the user. First line of the original draft VS the first line in the final edits. Original first line: The camera pans over the estate. Final first line: Thunder crackled in the distance as the trees whipped back and forth, dancing to a secret rhythm only they could hear. Though the idea behind the first chapter, the book itself, remained the same, this weird little novel changed a lot witthh time, experience, and effort. It wouldn't be where it is now without that first, simple line, though.
