The world of film festivals is brimming with events showcasing mainstream Hollywood flicks and prestigious award contenders. But for those seeking a taste of the unconventional, the weird, and the wonderfully audacious, the Oldenburg Film Festival stands out as a beacon of independent cinema. Oldenburg Film Festival A Festival Unlike Any Other Founded in 1994, the Oldenburg Film Festival has carved a unique niche for itself. Unlike its counterparts that settle into a predictable routine over time, Oldenburg retains its youthful rebellious spirit. It's a platform for celebrating the underdogs, the forgotten masters, and the bold new voices pushing the boundaries of independent filmmaking. As the festival gears up for its 31st edition in September 2024, let's delve into what makes this event so special. Key Dates and Location: Dates: September 11-15, 2024 Location: Oldenburg, Germany (a charming medieval town with a population of around 170,000) A Celebration of Indie Spirit: The Oldenburg Film Festival emerged in the heart of the 1990s indie film boom, inspired by the success of Sundance. Its inaugural lineup boasted iconic films like Spike Lee's "Crooklyn" and Peter Medak's "Romeo Is Bleeding," starring Gary Oldman. This dedication to showcasing independent cinema, irrespective of its categorization as art house or commercial, continues to be a core principle championed by the festival's founder, Torsten Neumann. Planning Your Oldenburg Film Festival Experience: Submission Fees: Feature film submissions cost €50 (around $54), while shorts submitted by the May 24th deadline cost €25 (approximately $27). Late submissions come with a higher fee. Travel: Oldenburg is conveniently located just a half-hour train ride away from Bremen. Major airports in Hamburg and Berlin also offer easy connections. Venue Highlights: The festival's centerpiece premieres, opening and closing ceremonies take place at the imposing 18th-century Oldenburg State Theatre, an architectural marvel in itself. Beyond Screenings: The Legendary Oldenburg Parties The Oldenburg Film Festival isn't just about screenings; it's about fostering a vibrant community. Every year, the festival throws legendary secret bashes in unique locations around the city. Past venues have included an old castle, an underground parking garage, and even an abandoned police station (which, according to Neumann, evoked the atmosphere of John Carpenter's "Assault on Precinct 13"). A Showcase for Global Indie Gems: Oldenburg audiences have a special appreciation for independent cinema from all corners of the globe. Recent award winners exemplify this global focus: 2023: "In the Blind Spot," a twisty documentary-style conspiracy thriller by Ayşe Polat (Turkey), won Best Film, later securing awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay at the German Film Awards. 2022: John Connors' Irish crime thriller "The Black Guelph" took home the top prize, later securing a U.S. release. 2020: Michael Maxxis' dark Canadian romance "Puppy Love," starring Paz de la Huerta and Hopper Penn, emerged as the winner. Oldenburg's Enduring Influence: The festival has a proven track record for recognizing and promoting talented filmmakers. Here are some notable examples: Deborah Kara Unger: The Canadian actress, known for her roles in "The Game," "Thirteen," and "Silent Hill," first visited Oldenburg in 2010. A chance encounter with Neumann blossomed into a long-term relationship, and Unger has become an integral part of the festival team. German Film Breakouts: The festival has a knack for identifying rising stars in German cinema. Jan-Ole Gerster's directorial debut, "A Coffee in Berlin," swept the 2012 awards, winning the German Independence Award, Audience Award, and Best Actor prize. It went on to dominate the German Film Awards the following year. Celebrating Cult Heroes: Oldenburg Film Festival doesn't shy away from honoring the underappreciated and forgotten. Their retrospectives and lifetime achievement awards have recognized the likes of directors Bruce Robinson ("Withnail and I"), Michael Wadleigh ("Woodstock, Wolfen"), and Ted Kotcheff ("Weekend at Bernie's," "First Blood").

Silent Hill: Revelation (2012)
Tumblr media
It's ok if you enjoy 2006's Silent Hill, but don’t tell me it’s a good movie. The plot makes no sense, the acting is lousy, and it’s obvious the main objective was to crowbar as many monsters and references to the game into a 2-hour running time... but it's a masterpiece compared to Silent Hill: Revelation.
Set 9 years (ish) after the first film, Sharon Da Silva (Adelaide Clemens) and her adoptive father Christopher (Sean Bean) are on the run from a cult obsessed with the town of Silent Hill. When her father is kidnapped by the Order of Valtiel (led by Carrie-Anne Moss as Claudia Wolf), Sharon and her new best friend, Vincent (Kit Harington), head for the creepy town to save him.
This film’s got nothing going on. That brief synopsis tells you everything you need to know about this story, save the ending. It’s as razor-thin as the knives held by those creepy, faceless nurses. Revelation has all of the problems of the first picture on top of its own bucket of issues. The twists in this story are so easy to predict, so obvious you’ll feel like a genius, proudly exclaiming out loud “that’s a bad guy!”, “that guy’s not as creepy as he looks!” and so on the instant someone walks on-screen. You'll only be surprised by how unconvincing the line deliveries are, and how nutty the plot gets.
Tumblr media
The picture begins on the wrong foot by attempting to be an actual sequel. While Silent Hill foreshadowed a part 2 with a would-be spooky ending, this picture has to jump through so many hoops to make it work it’s ridiculous. Apparently, the same town that housed Christabella and all of her followers also hosts another new cult whose objectives and beliefs are completely different from the other one - and they all escaped Alessa's wrath to go into the real world. Why didn’t anyone mention that Christabella and Deborah had another sister and a father stuck in an insane asylum? How did we miss the creepy carnival and mannequin factory? Why is Pyramid Head suddenly protecting people instead of killing them?
Tumblr media
In a good movie, characters’ actions follow a logical sequence. The consequences of those actions generate new situations for them to react to. There are hardly any characters in Silent Hill: Revelation; only excuses to have a body count. This film is not clever enough to have real scares or atmosphere. Out of desperation, writer/director Michael J. Bassett throws a bunch of gory deaths at the screen… too bad none are impressive. Not helping are the monsters in this follow-up, which are lame.
Silent Hill: Revelation is everything a bad horror movie can be and everything a bad video game-based movie can be at once. A deluge of references crammed throughout might distract the fans from the unholy performances and wretched story but only if all they want is to play "Silent Hill Bingo". As a horror movie, it fails to generate even a single scare or moment of tension. The characters are so stupid you feel like you’re watching someone move through a world where the biggest consequence is a “Game Over” screen. The only improvement over the 2006 film is the running time: about a half-hour shorter. When the end credits begin rolling, you’ll be screaming out loud “Was that it?!” Technically, it isn’t. Stick around for the very end of the credits.
Silent Hill: Revelation is the kind of film you want to look away from. Not because of the horrific sights - actually, the visuals are quite good - not because it reminds you of anything chilling, but because it generates such second-hand embarrassment for actors Carrie-Anne Moss, Sean Bean, and Malcolm McDowell that watching them becomes unbearable. (2D version on Blu-ray, October 21, 2016)

Ok. Here we are. The last film I watched in June. So, I got to 23 films for my 30 Days 30 Films movie challenge that, again, I just wanted to do for fun and decided on very spontaneously. I've posted something for all 23 films, by the way, so go ahead and check out what else I watched :) The Game (1997) is so absorbing. Suspense is high throughout most of the film. The clown puppet thing is FUCKING CREEPY. Another David Fincher movie that did not disappoint. Whenever I see something that says CRS I'm going to think of this film. #TheGame #30Days30Films #CriterionCollection #TheCriterionCollection #MichaelDouglas #DavidFincher #Movie #Film #moviechallenge #filmbuff #CRS #SeanPenn #DeborahKaraUnger #JamesRebhorn #CarrollBaker #PeterDonat https://www.instagram.com/p/Bz1macmlLC1/?igshid=1h8qqqpr58wp

The movie for me. Does not live up to the game at all. But on its own. It's still a watchable movie. It was good, could have been better. Maybe they will reboot it. And do it some justice!. 💀🤘#silenthillmovie#silenthill#silenthillnurse#videogamemovie#horrormovie#horrorcollection#horrorporn#dvdcollection#dvdporn#konami#playstation#seanbean#laurieholden#deborahkaraunger#kimcoates#tanyaallen#alicekrige#dvdmovies#moviecollection#samuelhadida https://www.instagram.com/_dredd_1138/p/BrBisn8A3Ja/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=o5q9vxfk0oyk

Silent Hill (2006)
Tumblr media
I’d describe Silent Hill as dangerous for your taste. Hear me out. It’s got many creepy scenes, the music is fantastic, the monsters look awesome. That’s all terrific, but the video game-based picture gets increasingly ineffective the longer you watch it. By the end, it’s disintegrated into a creamy-colored, unappetizing mess but the promise it showed early on it compels you to forgive its flaws. You'll convince yourself that this is a good movie. It isn’t.
Rose (Radha Mitchell) is driving her adoptive daughter Sharon (Jodelle Ferland) to the mysterious ghost town of Silent Hill - the subject of her persisting nightmares - hoping the trip will give them the answers they seek. Unfortunately, when Rose and Sharon arrive, they are quickly separated. Accompanied by motorcycle police officer Cybil Bennett (Laurie Holden), Rose must find her daughter and uncover the mystery of Silent Hill.
The initial setup and look of the movie are dynamite. With eerie music, disturbing monsters aplenty, Silent Hill drips with mood and atmosphere. The film is set up like a horror survival video game (appropriate considering the source material), with the protagonist finding herself in a location she can't escape, hopelessly outmatched by creatures, and running around trying to piece together what's happening. It’s genuinely frightening.
When the picture focuses on the mystery to be solved, it’s a mess. If anything, the story plays out too similarly to a video game. People pick up clues and know exactly what to do with them, characters make lightning-quick decisions about where to go next, they don’t stop to ask questions but still find all the right answers. No one explains anything while legions of creatures appear briefly enough for fans to go "I know those!" Sure they look good, but what does it all mean? You have no idea - until a giant exposition dump tells you everything you need to know in a grainy, “spooky” flashback. Detective work? What detective work?
In the end, I’m not convinced the film makes a whole lot of sense. Some of the revelations about Sharon raise serious questions about the point of this ordeal - if there even was one. I'm not saying you have to dislike the film but consider the following: If the forces behind the madness of Silent Hill want what they say they want at the end… why are they even after Sharon? Shouldn’t they be helping her instead of trying to rip her to shreds? What have the people living inside of Silent Hill been eating in the decades they’ve been trapped there? Why does everyone speak in needlessly cryptic patterns in some scenes but leave clues (such as missing room numbers) for people to easily find? What does the big sequence at the end mean when you consider the film’s “cautionary message”? I could go on, but we’d be dealing in spoiler territory. Bottom line is, this movie’s script and story weren't sufficiently polished.
Silent Hill is a leaky horror film. Answers to the questions you’re asking don’t make the film more interesting, if anything it makes it more confusing. There are many successful elements… but so what when the story is incoherent? Silent Hill is not a good movie, but it makes you think it is. Don’t be fooled.
