books i read in 2019
this year i read a total of 109 books. i lost track of some things i read and didn’t list them on goodreads, so the actual total is probably higher than my official reading challenge number. i’ve added at least a couple i can distinctly remember reading as they were christmassy novellas.
this year i leaned more heavily into reading romance of all types. i’ve found it easier to read books with a guaranteed happily ever after this year, and i’ve not had much enjoyment in my other type of common read which is a murder mystery/thriller. as the year ended though i did find i was reading a wider variety of books, which possibly is because i now work for a library and i can’t seem to help myself from taking books home.
i’m hoping to continue reading a bigger variety of books in 2020, but i’m also happy to continue down my romance route. i’ve decided to set my challenge at 30 books this year to feel a bigger sense of achievement, as for the last two years i’ve set it at 1 and whilst this obviously softened the pressure on me to read quickly i’ve definitely felt it less of a ‘challenge’. i’m confident i’ll be able to get to 30 fairly quickly.
rereads are italicised, books i really enjoyed are bolded, and my standout read of the year is both.

Capsized: Blood in the Water Cast on Shark Week's First Movie
[...]
Capsized, based on actual events, recounts the ordeal of captain John Lippoth (Duhamel), his girlfriend, Meg Mooney (Rebekah Graf), and three other young sailors — tough Deborah Scaling (Beau Garrett), hard-drinking Mark Adams (Josh Close) and good-natured Brad Cavanaugh (Tyler Blackburn). In 1982, a billionaire hired the group to sail his 58-foot yacht Trashman down the East Coast to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Somewhere near North Carolina, a raging storm destroyed the vessel, leaving the quintet clinging to life in an 11-foot dinghy.
"They were lost at sea with no food, no water, in the blazing sun and then freezing at night," a tired and sore Duhamel explains during a much-needed break. For five excruciating days, until a Russian freighter came across the survivors, "they were barely hanging on," Duhamel continues.
Oh, and sharks were circling them too. But unlike popcorn movies such as Jaws and The Meg, Capsized doesn't "demonize" the creatures, insists Swartz: "One thing we've done really well over 30 years is celebrate sharks and try to get away from the perception of them as these mindless killing machines." Duhamel agrees. "Sharks are just doing their thing," he says. "It's not personal. It's like, 'You're there. I'm going to eat you.'"
And they did. Like Lippoth, Adams also tangled with one of the predators — and the film's violent dramatization freaked out the actor playing him. "That was scary, man," recalls Close, admitting the shoot has been draining. "They had a fake shark on my leg, and if you look down, it looks real. It's got its eyes shut and it's chomping into your leg. I'm holding my breath, then screaming."
Thank the stunt crew for that authenticity. In scuba gear beneath the surface, they would attach ropes to the actors and jerk them every which way, catching them off guard. "I tell the actor, 'OK, I'm going to pull you when you're there,' but then I pull a little bit earlier," reveals stunt coordinator Dickey Beer — who's worked with everyone from Harrison Ford to Angelina Jolie — with a smile. "You must have that surprised look on somebody's face."
In fact, the whole production looks convincing, from the attack scenes to the ominous image of shark fins slicing swiftly through the surface of the water. (Beer's stuntwoman daughter Amy wore model fins to double as a predator.) Even costars who didn't swim with the fishes got chills. "I feel like I'm able to separate reality from fantasy," says Blackburn. "But there are moments when you're like, 'Oh s--t!'"
Discovery is banking on viewers having that same breathless, edge-of-your-seat reaction to Capsized. "It has so many elements that resonate with our audience," says Swartz. "It's a true story of survival in shark-infested waters."
Capsized: Blood in the Water, Movie Premiere, Wednesday, July 31, 9/8c, Discovery

Title: Legends: Catori
Author: Maggie Adams
Series: Legends
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: June 2, 2018
Blurb: It’s hard to keep secrets in a small town…
It’s even harder to keep a secret that could expose not only your family, but an entire species. That’s what Frankie Cavanaugh must do. As the daughter of the leader of the Wisdom Council, it’s up to her to step into her father’s shoes until another leader is chosen.
It’s also up to her to continue her lineage within the species.
She wants to do neither. She considers the shifter gene a curse rather than a gift, robbing her of a normal life. Unfortunately, the Council doesn’t see it that way and is determined to wed her to their next leader – by force, if necessary.
Tanner Coalson is fresh out of college and ready to tackle whatever life has in store for him. First item on his to-do list is marrying the woman he has loved for years. He knows Frankie will baulk at the notion because she’s fifteen years older and was his childhood sitter. He’s no longer a young boy, but a man who is determined to win her heart, and he is prepared to do just that.
But convincing her they are destined to be together gets much harder when she is kidnapped by an old enemy. In order to survive, Frankie may have to reveal her secret, and Tanner may have to accept what seems impossible, or reject the love of his life.

Prologue Excerpt:
Talon Cavanaugh stood on the grassy knoll above the cemetery, watching the procession as it wound through the cracked tombstones to the final resting place of the Wisdom Council’s leader, Leonard Cavanaugh. He smiled in satisfaction as the urn was laid into the dirt pit next to where his human wife would someday reside. Soon, he thought, soon all would be in place and he could claim his birthright.
“Son, I know how much you loved your uncle. Are you sure you don’t want to go down and join in the ceremony?” his father asked.
Well, the man he had called ‘father’ for most of his life, inquired. It was only on his mother, Sylvia’s, death bed, that Talon had learned the truth. He was the son of Leonard Cavanaugh, the owl leader of the Wisdom Council, who had died never knowing he had fathered a son. Sylvia had wanted to ensure the bloodline stayed pure when it became apparent that the old fool was planning to wed that woman, Paige, an inferior human. Sylvia had slipped a potion into his wine as the family celebrated her engagement to the leader’s brother, Lester, Talon’s assumed father. Leonard Cavanaugh had mated with Sylvia that night, the potion making him hallucinate that he was with his beloved Paige. Sylvia’s plan worked, and she gave birth to Talon, who was a pureblood shifter, keeping the bloodline intact.
Glancing over his shoulder, Talon shook his head in the negative at Lester. He had no need to go down there. He was the true heir to the leadership position of the Council. He knew the death procedure - one year of grieving for the widow and the family. He looked to Frankie Cavanaugh. She was a beautiful woman, despite her human blood. Her red hair glowed like flames in the sunlight. She was appropriately dressed in black, her cultural brooch, made of gold and the feathers of her father, pinned to her breast. She was crying quietly into a handkerchief, hugging her mother, in solace. It was almost a pity she would have to die, but there could only be one true leader.
And that position would be filled by him.

NCR-SARE Honors Sustainability Heroes, NSAC Senior Strategic Advisor
Ferd Hoefner being honored as a NCR-SARE Hero, 2017.
We need a hero! You won’t catch the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition’s (NSAC) Senior Strategic Advisor Ferd Hoefner riding a tractor to victory the way Kevin Bacon did in Footloose, but you will find him working hard every day for America’s family farmers and food producers.
Ferd was recently awarded the North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research & Education (NCR-SARE) Hero award, and he accepted the prize at this week’s NCR-SARE Administrative Council meeting in St. Paul, Minnesota. Ferd was honored with two other friends of NSAC, Margaret Krome of Michael Fields Agricultural Institute and Deborah Cavanaugh-Gran, formerly of the Illinois Sustainable Agriculture Network, who also received the NCR-SARE award.
Coordinated by the NCR-SARE Alumni Organization, the NCR-SARE Hero Recognition honors individuals who 1) have provided service to NCR-SARE or national SARE, 2) have shown leadership in sustainable agriculture locally and regionally, and 3) have made lasting impacts on sustainability in the North Central Region.
Over the past four decades, Ferd has worked with dozens of organizations in the North Central Region and helped them to be better advocates for federal agriculture policy that is good for farmers, good for the land, and good for the public. Over 30 years ago, Ferd championed the legislation that led to the development SARE program (as well as the legislation that created its forerunner, the “LISA program”). Through the annual appropriations process, Ferd has worked tirelessly with NSAC members and allies to ensure that SARE has the funding it needs to continue supporting ground-breaking, farmer-led research projects across the country. Though Ferd’s accomplishments are truly too many to list, we at NSAC are thrilled to at least be able to celebrate this honor on our blog, as well as the lifetime of work that our personal hero has done in the name of sustainable agriculture.

Weekly Update - Monday, May 11, 2020
Strengthen - Support - Succeed
“Not everyone can be famous, but everyone can be great,
because greatness is determined by service.”
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Good Morning,
I hope that everyone celebrated a wonderful Mother’s Day yesterday. The weather was much warmer than Saturday. I was able to spend the day with my mom. We enjoyed a nice lunch and a walk. While it was not exactly like usual, it was great to spend time with her.
Exciting Opportunity
Two of our very talented Sheehan students are competing in Broadway Worlds High School Vocal Competition - Emma Connors and Terrence Bogan. Below are the links to vote for both of them. Please vote for them. After you vote, you will receive an email that tells you where you need to confirm your vote. This is the first round.

Board of Education Meeting Updates
Tonight, there is an Operations Committee meeting at 6:30 p.m. As always, we will review the monthly cafeteria and financial reports for the district. I would like to extend my appreciation and gratitude to all of our dedicated food services staff. As I recently reported, we are now serving over 2000 meals each day of distribution. Needless to say, the need continues to grow, and the hard work and commitment of this staff is vital.
Reopening and Other COVID-19 Related Items
As you are aware, the State of Connecticut plans to reopen certain elements of our state on May 20, 2020. As we prepare for that day in the district, we will keep everyone posted. I know several staff members have reached out about getting back into their classrooms or offices. Principals are developing plans that will be finalized this week to address that topic as well as many more that are part of the annual school closeout. There is a lot to be considered and certainly we understand the complexity. Administrators will message these plans the week of May 18, 2020 to staff and families.
Part of our planning is all of the year end events. We kindly ask for your patience as we generate plans and have them approved by the local Health Department officials. We need to ensure we are not only meeting the needs of students, families, and staff, but also being mindful of the public health considerations. Again, as plans are approved and finalized, they will be communicated to everyone.
The fall reopening planning has begun, but it is at its very early stages. As you can imagine, we need much more information from the state and local officials before any plans will be finalized and shared. I do not imagine a plan will be in place until mid-summer at the earliest. There are too many variables and unknowns at this point. We do not know how the state virus data will be impacted by the initial reopening plans for May 20, 2020. Based on this initial reopening data, I am led to believe that we will have additional guidance on or around June 20, 2020.
With that said, we do have our teams in place, and we will be expanding to include membership from all unions in the coming weeks. Again, this is another marathon not a sprint. I know we are all seeking answers; however, we want to ensure that we do our due diligence in our planning.

I went looking for some news regarding Tyler Blackburn’s upcoming shark movie. Found an article on a Dutch website (the director of the movie, Roel Reine, is Dutch). The official Shark Week TV schedule hasn’t been released yet, but according to the website the movie Capsized: Blood in the Water will air on Friday, August 2 at 11.30pm on the Discovery Channel.
🦈 Capsized: Blood in the Water 🦈
Friday, August 2, 11:30 PM | Discovery Channel
In 1982, Brad Cavanaugh (Tyler Blackburn) and his girlfriend Deborah Kiley (Rebekah Graf) decide to go on a sailing trip from Maine to Florida with three friends.
Along the way they are hit by a huge storm that eventually makes the boat capsize. With difficulty, the five manage to climb into the lifeboat, but they end up without food and water. To make matters worse, the boat is surrounded by a pack of hungry sharks!
The moving and true story is re-enacted in the drama Capsized: Blood in the Water in which actors Josh Duhamel, Tyler Blackburn, Rebekah Graf, Beau Garett (Louise) and Josh Close (Loudon Wainwright) play the unfortunate drowning people. Five men in a small boat, bobbing for days on the wide ocean among the sharks, a terrifying adventure that unfortunately not everyone survived…

William Cavanaugh III
Connect: Bill Cavanaugh III, a New Orleans native, is a man that resonated strongly with me as a lecturer in our Honors course and whom I eagerly anticipate interviewing with for deeper innovator analysis. I felt confident about my choice upon meeting him, when he introduced himself individually to each one of us in the class with a brisk handshake.
I find it appropriate that Bill Cavanaugh was the designated lecturer of the “Motivation” week of the course in that he is an ideal role model for it; he even had a slide on his Powerpoint with it as the title. It must feel flattering to be considered a “maverick” such as Bill in one’s particular field, having the reputation of being “never satisfied” or as he worded it, “a pain in the ass.” These persistent, risk-taking qualities are arguably part of the collective goal of taking an Honors course such as this one or for wanting to be recognized for achieving success in general.
“One thing we’ve found is that children who have more of a growth mind-set tend to be grittier,“ Deborah Perkins-Gough quotes in her 2013 Significance of grit PDF in agreement with Carol Dweck. I believe Bill is about as gritty as it gets when it comes to his persistence in the workforce, as he recalls consistently having challenged the regulated “status quo mindset” he encountered from workplace to workplace, or “This is the way we’ve always done it,” as he puts it. This, to me, is the “Don’t fix what isn’t broken,” mindset I see in my peers and co-workers so often and the antithesis of the work ethic I myself put forth effort to embody.
As the synopsis of Greg Satell’s 2016 Dare to be Crap PDF articulates, “Truly great performers never stop exposing their own crappiness. That’s how they become so much better than everybody else.” I’m sure Bill himself resonates with such a down-to-earth way of explaining the importance of persistence after his long and prosperous career at companies such as Arkansas Power & Light, Louisiana Power & Light, and Mississippi Power & Light.
A quote that I particularly enjoyed from Slotnik & Schulten’s Sowing failure, reaping success PDF is, “Everyone grapples with failure, even (or maybe especially) tremendously successful people,” (2012). I think this wording is delightful and symbiotically representative of the relationship Mr. Cavanaugh shares with the construct of failure. He views the prospect of failure not as an obstacle, but as an opportunity, which I believe is an essential virtue of a truly effective innovative leader, or as Bill says, “critical...absolutely no substitute for it.” In a way, the idea of using failure as a motivation source can further be delved upon in Gerber’s 2011 Innovation self-efficacy PDF in saying, “Innovation self-efficacy is our belief in our ability to take part in these types of actions. Innovation self-efficacy and innovative action are mutually reinforcing.”
I found it endearing that Bill had a favorite quote of his own, that interestingly to me, he noted was first uttered by George Bernard Shaw in 1949 and then again in an eerily similar way (coincidentally, perhaps?) by John F. Kennedy twenty years later in the prime year of 1969 and that is, “You see things and you say ‘why?;’ But I dream things that never were and I say, ‘why not?’
Apply: I was particularly interested in choosing him as our class group’s interviewee in that his career closely resembles the beginning of my own significant other’s in the Navy, with the prospect of submarine travels and nuclear power studies. Although he never made it knots under the sea and instead took off his Naval career with aircraft careers (to appease the generation before him of grandfathers who served on similar warships), my boyfriend is still in fact studying in the nuclear power program, or “Nuke school,” as he calls it, and for that his family and I are very proud.
A “lesson for future” that Bill stated outright is that the “nation should never rely on one fuel source; it not a good idea.” This made me consider ideas that are, of course, a topic of awareness and movement in our generation such as the environment and alternative energy sources, but I believe it impacted me in a more significant way than from other speeches I had heard before. The beginning of a movement does only take one person (and that person is me), to begin thinking about what alternative energy sources I can use and how I can make it leave a lasting impression on my community.
Another lesson I learned vicariously through Bill is that of learning from others mistakes, as Bill did as a repercussion of the accident at Three Mile Island. I think it is really important for generations to learn from the ones that came before them, and for present generations to keep in mind that the “children are our future” and we pose the model of behavior and basis of ethics for the next to come.
Bill’s workplace culture change ideology with emphasis on ‘People, Performance and Excellence’ through communication and the sharing of best practices and experience which fosters a professional environment conducive for innovation is an deal blueprint for the raising of the standards of excellence in any industry. I believe this shines through his quote, “When are we gonna stop changing? Never.”
Question:
1. I am very interested in knowing more about what life was like in the submarines. Could you further elaborate?
2. It seems you have continued your career after bouts of “retirement” recurrently. What projects in academia are you currently working on?
3. What advice would you give to an aspiring Sailor in “Nuke” A-School, and how would it compare to advice you would give to a citizen student attending public school studying nuclear engineering?

SARE ROUNDUP: NEWS ON SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE RESEARCH AND EDUCATION
Editor’s Note: This is the latest in a series of periodic blog posts on the happenings in each of the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) regions, focusing on project solicitations and grant award announcements.
The Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program funds farmer-driven research and education through competitive grants. SARE is the only competitive research grant program offered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) that focuses solely on sustainable agriculture, and has been supporting research in this field for nearly 30 years.
SARE is administered through four regional councils of producers, researchers, educators, and government representatives. These regions are the North Central, Northeast, Southern, and Western regional councils. These regional councils are responsible for setting SARE policies and the grant making process. Because each of the SARE councils houses their program information, requests for proposals, and other important information separately, NSAC provides a periodic aggregation of data from across the regions – the “SARE Roundup”.
Each one of SARE’s four regional offices administers three primary grant programs: Research and Education, Professional Development, and Producer Grants. Some regions also offer additional grants for community innovation, graduate student research, agricultural professionals conducting on-farm research, and region-specific initiatives. Read on for details about what is going on in your SARE region!
National SARE News
National SARE in partnership with NCAT/ATTRA will be hosting the “Our Farms, Our Future” conference April 3-5 2018 at the Hyatt Regency at the Arch Downtown in St. Louis, Missouri. This conference will focus on the progress and future of sustainability in agriculture and bring together farmers, ranchers, agricultural professionals, agribusiness, students, researchers, scientists, agency representatives, and nonprofit leaders from around the country. Highlights of the conference will include keynote speakers, panel sessions, farm tours, exhibits, breakout sessions, and a pre-conference session for military veterans.
North Central SARE
North Central SARE recently recognized its 2017 NCR-SARE Heroes. The NCR-SARE administrative council created the NCR-SARE Hero Recognition in 2012 to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to NCR-SARE and/or National SARE.
This year’s NCR-SARE Heroes are Deborah Cavanaugh-Grant, Margaret Krome, and NSAC’s own Ferd Hoefner. Congratulations to the 2017 NCR-SARE Heroes!
Nominations for the NCR-SARE Hero Award may be submitted by anyone. An official nomination form is available here.
Northeast SARE
NE-SARE has announced a call for proposals for the 2018 Partnership Grant program, the Farmer grant program, and the Graduate Student grant program.
The Partnership Grant Program is reserved for agricultural service providers like non-profits, consultants, state departments of agriculture, and can be used to fund on-farm demonstrations, research, marketing and other projects with farmers as cooperators. Projects are capped at $15,000. The deadline for 2018 Partnership Grants is October 17, 2017. Application materials will be released midsummer.
The 2018 Farmer Grant Program funds projects by commercial producers who want to test innovative ideas in field trials, on-farm demonstrations, or market initiatives; a technical advisor must also be involved. The deadline for 2018 Farmer Grants is November 28, 2017. Application materials will be released midsummer.
The deadline for 2018 Graduate Student Grants will be May, 2018 with awards announced in August.
Southern SARE
SARE recently released a video on how a farmer used a SARE grant to expand the market for organic ginger. Woody Crenshaw, owner of Riverstone Organic Farm in Floyd, Virginia, received a two-year SARE Producer Grant to build covered and heated raised beds in order to grow ginger in the Southwest Virginia mountains. His project documents the profitability of growing ginger through the whole production process.
The National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT) and the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) will be hosting the first statewide sustainable agriculture conference for Hispanic farmers and ranchers. The Hispanic farming community, the agriculture industry, advocates for sustainability and agribusinesses will all come together to participate in workshops, networking, and learning opportunities. The Hispanic Texas Farmers and Ranchers Conference will be held September 14-15, 2017 at the Casa de Palmas Hotel in McAllen, Texas.
With the help of a Southern Sustainable Agriculture Research & Education (SSARE) Professional Development Grant, the Southern Sustainable Agriculture Working Group (SSAWG) has developed several webinars to help farmers track financial data, analyze data and make sound business decisions to increase their profitability. These webinars are part of SWAWG’s larger educational effort “Growing Farm Profits” program. Farmers and ranchers can use these webinars as helpful business decision-making tools.
NCAT’s Arkansas office’s “Armed to Farm” program is training hundreds of U.S. veterans in sustainable farming skills and farm management. The successful program has begun to spread to other areas across the country, helping veterans gain the necessary skills and expertise to begin careers in sustainable farming.
Southern SARE will also be participating in the North American Fruit and Nut Growers Conference at the University of Georgia from Sunday, August 13 through Wednesday, August 16, 2017.
Western SARE
W-SARE has announced a call for proposals for the 2018 Professional Development grant program, the Farmer/Rancher grant program, and the Professional + Producer grant program.
The Professional Development grant program focuses on training agricultural professionals to help them spread knowledge about sustainable agriculture concepts and practices. PDP Grants are limited to $75,000 and can run up to three years. The deadline for 2018 Professional Development grants is November 1, 2017.
W-SARE’s Farmer/Rancher grants are awarded to agricultural producers with support and guidance from a technical advisor. Individual farmers or ranchers may apply for up to $20,000, and a group of three or more individuals may apply for up to $25,000. Grants last for one to three years and typically go towards on-farm experiments to improve operations and the environment as well as marketing and organic production. The deadline for 2018 Farmer/Rancher Grants is December 6, 2017.
Professional + Producer Development grants are similar in to the Farmer/Rancher Grants with a few key differences. Instead of a producer serving as the project coordinator, an agricultural professional coordinates the project. A farmer or rancher serves as the project advisor. Applicants can seek up to $50,000 and must have at least five producers involved. The deadline for 2018 Professional + Producer Grants is December 6, 2017.
In Oklahoma, Oklahoma State Cooperative Extension Service will be co-hosting one of four Summer Crops Conferences across the state. Speakers will include Oklahoma State cropping specialists and agronomists focusing on a wide range of crops. The Central Oklahoma Seminar will be held in El Reno, Oklahoma.
