Narcissists and sucker punches
"Narcissists and sucker punches", a review of 'Best of Enemies', screened by the National Theatre Live in Johannesburg and Pretoria until 28 October 2023.
HEAD-to-head: Neo-Conservative William F. Buckley (David Harewood) and flamboyant liberal Gore Vidal (Zachary Quinto) in Best of Enemies, screened by the National Theatre Live, in Johannesburg and Pretoria this week. THE RUSH AND thrust of politics can date very easily. Particularly within the ambit of a staged play. In the hands of the makers of James Graham’s Best of Enemies, however, the…

Propaganda
Deborah Kerr (Bonjour Tristesse, An Affair to Remember, The King and I)— For several decades she held the record for most Oscar nominations without a win (6 in total), and she was a prolific leading lady throughout the 40s and 50s. She's best known today for the romance An Affair to Remember with Cary Grant, and as the governess in The King and I. Many people have this erroneous perception of her as extremely prim, proper, and virginal, but this could not be further from the truth. When she first came to Hollywood under MGM she was typecast into boring decorative roles, but broke sexual boundaries for herself and Hollywood generally in From Here to Eternity, when she made out (horizontally!) with Burt Lancaster (on top of him!) in the famous Beach Scene. She went on to play many sexually conflicted women, a character type that would define most of her post- Eternity work. She continued to break Hays Code boundaries with Tea and Sympathy, which addresses homosexuality/homophobia head-on, and even did a topless scene in The Gypsy Moths 1969!! One of the only classic stars to do so. She deserves a more nuanced and frankly a hotter legacy than she currently has!!!
Ethel Merman (Anything Goes, Call Me Madam)— Possessed of a bold, brash voice, and an even bolder and brasher presence, Ethel Merman might be more well known for her stage roles, but she made several movies, and was bold and brash in them as well. Also I think if I don't submit her, she's going to come back and haunt me.
This is round 1 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut]
Ethel Merman:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You've gotta love any woman who got typecast as lead-MILF
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Deborah Kerr:
Tumblr media
I think she was one of my first crushes before I realised I was bi in The King and I when I watched it as a kid honestly. The kissing scene in From Here to Eternity is iconic for a reason. Actually tried to learn the accents for the characters she was playing if they weren't English which is more than pretty much anyone else was doing then. Played very restrained characters who frequently seemed to be desperate not to be so restrained. Did horror movies without venturing into hagsploitation tropes. Gave Marni Nixon the credit she deserved for her share of the singing in The King and I.
Anne Larsen is a peak late 1950s bisexual with big MILF energy. Have you seen the behind the scenes pics of her wearing a suit?? Have you????? Vote Deb as Anne Larsen.
Nominated for an Oscar six (6) times and never won, but besides her having actual talent (hot), and besides her looking Like That (very hot, also beautiful), she was always playing women who are, like, crazy repressed. Which makes it fun and easy for me to read these characters as queer. Icon!!!! You know what's hot? Playing ambiguously gay in vintage Hollywood.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her face and talent and body, yes, ofc, duh. But also!!! Her HANDS!!!! I may be but a simple lesbian, but she is the best hactor (hand actor) that ever lived and that's HOT! For propriety's sake I feel I must redact a large portion of my commentary on this subject. Anyway. She's hot in her most famous roles (mentioned above), and also some of her sexiest hacting is on display in An Affair to Remember (her hand on the bannister when Cary Grant kisses her off-screen??? HELLO???), Tea and Sympathy (when she's trying to persuade Tom not to go out and she keeps flexing her hands like she wants to reach out to him but can't??? ALLY BEHAVIOR! WE STAN!), and The Innocents (which opens and closes with extended shots of her hands bc director Jack Clayton was also an ally and he did that for ME). Much of her appeal also lies in the fact that she often played deeply repressed characters and you know what's hot? When those uptight characters finally unravel. It's sexy. It's cathartic. It's erotic. Plus, she's beautiful to look at in both black & white and technicolor, and the more of her films you see, the more you can't help but fall in love!
Tumblr media
Literally is in thee most famously sexy scene of all time (or maybe just during the hays code era which is what we're talking about HELLO), which is the beach scene with Burt Lancaster in from here to eternity. To quote a tumblr post of a screen capture of a tweet of a video of joy behar on the view: "y'know, there used to be movies where they were kissing on the beach... From Here to Eternity. They're kissing-- Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr are Kissing on the Beach and then the WAVES crash!! You know exactly what they did!"
She might have a reputation of being chaste and virginal or whatever, but we all know it's the quiet ones who are certifiable FREAKS

hey y'all, since it's spotify wrapped season, can i beg a moment of your time? no, im not about to get on a soapbox about spotify. spotify sucks but that's not what i want to talk about.
did you know that most recording artists in the united states don't have the legal right to organize a union? some musicians are unionized as part of SAG-AFTRA or the American Federation of Musicians (for instrumental musicians), but lyricists and composers are classified as "independent contractors." This decision was handed down by the national labor relations board in 1984 and has not been overturned.
this means that musicians cannot organize or negotiate for better deals from, for instance, spotify, without the threat of being sued due to antitrust laws. musicians who are not represented by a major label or who are not part of a large musical organization such as an orchestra have very little bargaining power. source
fixing this situation will take a lot of work -- there's not a single easy solution. but in an era where we're seeing union growth and historic labor wins, i think now is the time to dream big. musicians need to organize ourselves on the ground to create collective power. we also need wider political interest and momentum around the necessity of musicians' rights.
this isn't time for you to say "yea im never gonna pay full price for music, sorry" or "musicians just have to accept that the market's saturated and devalued." this is time for us to try to envision a music industry where artists can be compensated for their creative labor and music can still remain accessible and easy to discover. changing the labor situation in the united states is just one piece of changing a global music industry, but it could have a big impact on the future.
if you're in the united states, there are two active efforts that you can ask your representatives to support -- one congressional bill introduced by Deborah Ross, and a resolution introduced by Rashida Tlaib.
H.R. 5576 - Protect Working Musicians Act of 2023 - sponsored by Artist Rights Alliance
H.Con.Res. 102 - Resolution for a new Streaming Royalty - sponsored by United Musicians and Allied Workers
i know there is so much to organize around right now. but if you're in the united states and have predominantly used spotify this year, or posted about spotify wrapped, please take a moment to send a message to your representatives about these bills. all you need to do is fill in your info, the letters are already written for you.
and please share this widely. thank you!!

The Jane Doe had an ectopic pregnancy rupture after an anti-abortion pregnancy center told her she had a normal pregnancy
Emily Doe, whose fetus had lungs that wouldn’t develop and had no kidneys. The pregnancy had the potential to endanger her health…but it wasn’t endangering it yet. So she had to flee Missouri for an abortion.
Victoria Doe from Louisiana, who had to go to Oregon
Ashley Brandt

Reverend and Doctor Love Holt

Brooke High
Ashley from Mississippi, who was raped and forced to give birth to her rapist's baby. She's 13.

When we do win back our right to bodily autonomy, forced birthers will forget these people. Some have absolutely no idea who these people are. But when you tell them you hope what they force on others gets forced on them, they gasp and say you're evil. Because they recognize that what they force on others is wrong, and they think they deserve better than their victims.
If you think the "abortion debate" is merely a difference of opinion, you haven't been paying attention.

"Deborah, mon cher?", Alastor called out to me in the night outside my bedroom door, knocking lightly. "Ally?", I replied. "I... um... need some... comfort. May I come in?", he asked in a thin, shaken voice. "Sure, come in", I replied softly. Alastor, entering the room, approached me, while I stood in front of him. He rested his head on my shoulder and sighed. "It's heartbreaking how I, a merciless super demon, can miss you if I don't see or hear you even for two stupid seconds". While his head rested on my shoulder, he tangled my curls with his long fingers. "How I've missed your smell", he said, pinching my neck with his nose. "I missed you, but I thought you wanted space, I know you hate contact", "but not yours, my love, I wish you could be my shadow. Please, don't leave me tonight. Would you sleep with me?", he asked with an almost broken voice, I could tell he was suffering and trying so hard to not appear so vulnerable in front of me. His hands went down to mine, he brushed and caressed my fingers and intertwined them, holding them. I could hear him crying? "Alastor?", I asked in a very low and tender voice, but worried. No answer, but his body was having regular spasms with his moans and growls. "Alastor, what's wrong? You know you can talk to me!", I tried to reassure him and to let go of his hand to caress his back, to comfort him, but his hand squeezed mine tightly, blocking me. "Don't. You. Dare. To. Leave. Me". He moved his head away from my shoulder, his gaze reached mine, his eyes were ruby, shining like two gems and moist. The radio demon was actually crying for some strange and unknown reason. He rested his forehead against mine. "Deborah", he repeated and repeated, my name hanging from his lips like a prayer, and the more he repeated it, the more he slowed down. His hands reached my waist, which he began to squeeze very very tightly, but he kept his gaze on mine. "Do you want... me to hug you?", I asked, trying to understand what his intentions were. "Yes", he replied, very warmly. "I will only do it if you tell me what's wrong". On his face an expression of suffering and pity towards himself. "Today I realized a theory of mine. I thought my bouts of bad mood and depression were due to my lack of killing, my not doing podcasts anymore, my diet. I've tried everything, really everything, but I realized that my thoughts are consumed by you. I crave your company, your presence, your touch. Touch me. Oh, please, touch me", "are you... sure? Can I really?", "yes, I'm specifically asking you". I took a deep breath and reached out to his face, I reached out to his cheek and caressed him lovingly. Alastor would never find out and know that I had been in love with him from the first moment I saw him. His eyes closed slightly and purring moans came from his chest. Alastor, suddenly, hugged me tightly from the back, holding me ever closer to him impossibly. "You consume me, you are my condemnation, my infernal loop", he said in a firm and pained voice, "but only here, in your arms, I find peace from my torment". Alastor took me like a bride and carried me to the bed in his room, covered us both with the blanket and hugged me. In the meantime, he filled my forehead and cheeks with kisses. "I will make you mine, Deborah, so that I can have you by my side FOR ETERNITY", he whispers softly in my ear, kissing my neck.

Random headcanons on the Weston boys
Okay since Weston anime is out, I’ll be sharing some headcanons I’ve collected during 10+ years of being obsessed with this saga and its characters.
I’ve been so invested into these headcanons that I consider them to be canon at this point. Anyway please don’t be mad if they don’t match your personal headcanon, it’s still my own interpretation and silly ideas about characters that don’t belong to me so anyone can disagree.
First I’m gonna write down the ones that involve more than one character, then I’ll be more specific and list them by character.
Brace yourselves for a pile of totally self-indulging blabbering.
Lawrence and Edgar are canonically childhood friends (Yana confirmed it), I like to think they grew up together thanks to their mothers being best friends with each other.
While Lawrence and Edgar already knew each other since birth, they met Herman and Gregory during their first year at Weston.
Because of the rivalry, friendship between students from different dorms has always been rather frowned upon, so the boys decided to put all their efforts in becoming the best students of their respective dorm to one day become Prefects and be free to meet and be friends without being judged by other students.
To freely chat and keep in contact prior to becoming P4, they secretly exchanged letters hidden among the library’s textbooks.
While we know Lawrence has 7 sisters, Edgar and Herman don’t have any sibling, while Gregory has an older brother. He’s doesn’t talk about him often as they’re not very close and don’t get along well.
Gregory met Cheslock while he was at his 3rd year (Cheslock is one year younger). They often spent their free time in their dorm’s common room, Cheslock would practice violin and Gregory would silently sit near him while drawing. One day he made a portrait of Cheslock and left it near him as a gift with the encouraging inscription “Keep playing”. The next day Cheslock asked him if he had any request for him on what to play, and that’s how they started talking to each other.
Headcanons by single character
Edgar:
His zodiacal sign is sagittarius
He has a sweet tooth and would live on sweet food alone
His maternal grandmother is french
His noble title comes from his mother, who is a Viscountess and older sister to Viscount of Druitt
He’s either pan or gay
Lawrence:
His zodiacal sign is capricorn
He’s ambidextrous (he usually writes with his right hand but is more comfortable doing other activities with his left one)
His sisters’ names are: Isabel (6 years older than him), Deborah (4 years older than him), Madelyn (2 years older than him), Adela (the only one to have a canonical name, 5 years younger than him), Rebecca (the one who has a crush on Edgar, 7 years younger than him), Rosalind and Amelia (identical twins, 9 years younger than him)
His father is a banker
Pretty sure he’s either ace or gay
Herman:
His zodiacal sign is libra (though I feel like aries might suit him better)
He took after his mother the most
He’s notoriously good at many sports, but he’s not very good at dancing (he’s not graceful enough for that kind of activity)
He’s good at cooking
He’s either a straight ally or a disaster bi
Gregory:
His zodiacal sign is cancer (mayhap also aquarius could suit him tho)
He used to wear charcoal and inks as make-up in his early years at Weston
His father is a politician
He’s kind of a picky eater and doesn’t like meat and seafood
He’s 100000% ace-spec
Cheslock:
His zodiacal sign is scorpio
His iconic “scar” is actually make-up, though beneath it he does have a smaller scar on his left eyelid, which is the result of a quarrel with his sister when they were kids
His father is a surgeon
His full name is Victor Theodore, which he hates
Pretty sure he’s bi
I might add more in the future, though I don’t have many headcanons for other characters but who knows.
Also I’m up for asks to chit chat about what I’ve shared, or for other headcanons o/

You know what's slightly annoying about the whole Deborah situation though? While its good (in a sense) to hear that so many other people had issues with her (because now I know for sure that the issue wasn't with me), why am I the only one who actually stuck her neck out to write a review to warn people?
Same with Ally from Another Spin. She got dragged by ex-employees on Facebook for her neglect of her animals, but no one other than me gave Another Spin a bad review to warn people who aren't on FB.
Reviews are going to have a larger and longer presence than FB complaints, and these assholes would either reform their bad behavior or go out of business much faster if people weren't so afraid to leave them. It's not "being the better person" to let such blatant mistreatment go when it enables bad barn owners to do the same thing to other people.

Fascinating flora, special edition.
White Sage
I am still doing a regular post about sage in general, but as a conservationist and student of ethnobotany, I wanted to address the conservation status and history of salvia apiana in particular.
White sage is endemic to Southern California and parts of Northern Baja, and is a valuable medicinal and cultural resource to indigenous populations who were forcibly relocated to these areas. Today, the majority of white sage is cultivated by indigenous Americans on protected land.
Smudging refers to a variety ceremonies that involve the burning of sacred herbs. The British, Spanish, and French colonizers started to relocate indigenous people, to wash away their culture, take their children, and erase their languages. Smudging is an English word that was used to generalize and belittle a widely held set of spiritual practices, and has now been reclaimed by many indigenous communities.
The use of this plant by non native people, and the misappropriation of the word ‘smudging’ came much later, around the time the first legal protections were established to protect the remaining people and culture. “In the 1960s, the hippie movement co-opted the use of white sage and evolved into the New Age Movement.” (Ramirez, Rose & Small, Deborah)
The popularity of white sage has only gotten higher, and with a boom in demand, illegal harvesting of the plant has become all to common a practice. “With very few commercial growers of white sage (Salvia apiana), the vast majority of products are wild-harvested.” (Ramirez & Small)
“What I learned when I was in California and visited the Etiwanda Preserve was that it is the epicenter of the current commercial harvest.” (Leopold, Susan).
“What is important to stress is that this underground sage mafia is not ethical or sustainable wildcrafting as it is portrayed in hipster IG accounts and stores! The scale of white sage commercial trade on the Internet and demand in China is alarming” (Leopold).
“I was invited by the owner of a white sage company to meet at the Etiwanda Preserve in March of 2019; he wanted to show his sustainable harvesting methods. I quickly pulled out my phone to show him that it was against the law to do so, and that recent arrests had been made. He carried on as if that was not the case” (Leopold).
The current elemental status of white sage is G4, which means ‘apparently secure.’ This rating has not been reviewed since June nineteenth, 2002. The lack of updated information on the plants range and occurrences have kept it off multiple endangered species lists.
The article referencing a book by Ramirez and Small, published in spring of 2020, evaluate that 50% of white sage has been eradicated due to urbanization.
I am not native, I can’t speak for any native people. All of what I have stated here is a summary or quotation of the words of indigenous activists, ethnobotanists, and conservationists. My hope here is to give a factual overview of the situation and provide direction to people more knowledgeable than myself.

Tumblr media
In the closing months of World War II, American bombs rained down on Nazi Germany and its territories, including Austria.
As glass shattered around them in Vienna, an ordinary-looking horse named Nero and his stable mates, the dancing white Lipizzaner stallions of the famed Spanish Riding School, quiver and shake in fear. But they do not panic. Somehow, they sense the school's director, dedicated horseman Alois Podhajsky, will do everything he can to keep them safe.
Yet Alois can't do it alone. And in the chaotic last days of the war, as their fate becomes more uncertain than ever, Nero will play a key role in helping Alois appeal for aid from an unlikely ally -- America.
But time is running out. It will take a daring band of American soldiers -- along with horse lovers from opposing sides -- to pull off a secret mission to save the Lipizzaners from certain destruction. United by their love of horses, these unsung heroes risked their lives to preserve the majesty of this rare breed for generations to come.
Join the ride as critically acclaimed author Deborah Hopkinson brings to life the exhilarating true story of Operation Cowboy and the miraculous survival of the Spanish Riding School. Featuring rare family photos and told for the first time for young readers, They Saved the Stallions is bound to please every history fan and horse lover.
