I got some book mail again ✨
I ordered two new books from Debbie Tung. The first one is "Book Love" and second one is "Everything is OK". I already have another graphic novel from her at home but never got the chance to read it. It’s definitely something different from the books I usually read. But the illustrations alone just said: Buy me!
I bet it’s gonna be so relatable ✨🌙

Happily Ever After & Everything In Between Review
Happily Ever After & Everything In Between by Debbie Tung is a collection of comic strips about married life.
⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 2.5 out of 5. Sneha Jaiswal (Twitter | Instagram) “OMG, look at us, we’re so in love, and so cute” – that seems to be the essential story of the comic book ‘Happily Ever After & Everything In Between’ by Debbie Tung. This collection of comic strips shares glimpses of the author’s married life as newlyweds, and unlike its title, the creator shares only selective sweet parts of her…

Everything is Ok by Debbie Tung

× It wasn’t for me
I didn’t hate it, but I can’t say I liked it.
Objectively, it’s an ok book. It’s about the author’s experience and struggle with mental illness. Some parts made me rather emotional, to the point of tears even, but overall, it was kind of… cliché?
I feel like I could’ve used a book like this when I was 15 and at the peak of my depression, but now? Meh.
There isn’t really a story, it’s more like… I’m not sure how to describe it, a moving text? Motivational speech? Reassurance? There’s just no structure.
The art was beautiful though, I’ll give it that. And I didn’t find anything toxic or something that would negatively affect mental health.
If you’re a teenager, give it a try. If you’re an adult? I’d skeep this one.
This was my first book by Debbie Tung and while I didn’t hate it, let’s just say I won’t be picking up another one.
Farewell for now ~

Thoughts:
I am now in a world with no more Queen’s Thief books to look forward to, but what a marvelous ride it was. This is now one of my favorite series, and I eagerly look forward to whatever Megan Whalen Turner does next.
Also, I didn’t mean to read two beauty and the beast retellings back-to-back, but it was fun to compare them. The highlight was T. Kingfisher’s Bryony and Roses, which was absolutely lovely.
Goodreads Goal: 210/400

Books, March - April 2023
Masters in This Hall - KJ Charles
Little Eyes - Samanta Schweblin, translated by Megan McDowell
Siren Queen - Nghi Vo
Everything is Okay - Debbie Tung [okay. so. this is, in the larger sense, a book about living with depression and anxiety, and there were absolutely multiple pages that I read and immediately said, “oh no, that’s too real,” (and then immediately photographed for future use), but in practice it’s as much or more a book about cognitive behavioral therapy, and while I don’t want to deny the utility of therapy exercises or the practice of learning to care for oneself, my god is it difficult to write about them without sounding eye-rollingly vapid]
She Who Became the Sun - Shelley Parker-Chan
The English Understand Wool - Helen DeWitt *
#books 2023#books practical and pleasurable#look friends! 50 percent more books than last time#...because two of these are novellas and one is a graphic novel

Having been transformed from almost confidence-free Molly Fox into the strikingly different ā yí (auntie) Huli (Fox) Mò lì (Molly) by The Temple, Auntie Huli wasn’t really sure what to do next.
Until that is she was able to convince her sister-in-law Debby (who had no idea who she was at first, but it worked out) to also go to The Temple, and from there, get her unruly daughter Jane, who was on the verge of dropping out of high school, to do the same so that she not only graduated but then set sail (well plane trip really) and become a student at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University on the island of Taiwan.

This gave ā yí Mò lì an idea for a place that could serve as a way station between people and The Temple.
As Molly Fox, the thought of asking for a bank loan would have been all but impossible, as her new self she walked right in, and much to her surprise was able to obtain one with ease.

Which before long led to the opening of the first Auntie Mò lì’s Restaurant and Social Club where “You can walk into Auntie Mò lì’s and know nothing about traditional Chinese customs, but you can’t leave that way.”

Soon not only had Auntie Mò lì’s increased the success rate of The Temple threefold, but had become a success in its own right so that a former simple shy hesitant Irish girl had become someone else altogether.

Almost, much to the chagrin of the inner Molly, a cult to some even!

So that a few years later Mò lì / Molly had to just sit in her well-appointed office at certain times (usually around Saint Patrick’s Day and Lunar New Year when she felt the strangest) and wonder what could possibly be next.

Hi everyone! My new book EVERYTHING IS OK is out today! 📚❤️ It’s a graphic memoir about my mental health journey. I worked on it since 2019 for almost 3 years. It’s very personal and a bit more emotional than my previous books. I hope you’ll enjoy reading it!
You can get a copy from bookstores or online retailers and there are also some links on my publisher’s website for places where you can order the book: https://publishing.andrewsmcmeel.com/book/everything-is-ok/
Thank you!
