Some Godwyn sketches that were living in my head rent free after reading a lore theory on reddit. It theorized that Godwyn was ascending to godhood by becoming a true dragon, in alignment with the myth of the koi fish swimming up stream until it became a dragon.

So I played around with that design as if it were a phase shift in his boss fight, with his weird oyster face opening up and revealing his true form, a rancid deathblight dragon.

Also playing around that the oyster face isn't Godwyns real face, but rather just like a real oyster, with Godwyns head is being reformed within it much like like what happens in real oysters when they make pearls (instead of calcium it's deathblight, and the "outside particle" is Godwyns corpse being covered and changed to create the Prince of Death.) (This is also like... visually could be compared to Griffith being rebirthed through the red behelit into Femto, since I know Miyazaki loves that Berserk stuff)

crack idea, the hornsent grandam places a curse upon marika and all born from her, we see such curse take effect in miquella and malenia, the omen twins mohg and morgott. curses in elden ring are usually made by people who have been wronged in one way or the other.

so my crack theory is this, what if godwyn had already been infected with the death blight long before his 'death' (in quote because he dies in soul but not body) at the hands of the black knifes? one thing to note is that we never really see any shot of him from the waist down (correct me if i'm wrong). the only shots i've seen of godwyn are these two-

me pointing out the obvious but see how we can't really make our his legs etc. we see this again after rogier is infected with the death blight, he's covered from the waist down and is dying (a slow death)-

rogier states that due to his affliction he is unable to fight i.e his fighting days are behind him. piggybacking off this, i think it can be used as argument as to why godwyn didn't bother fighting against his assassins -

you've got a legendary figure his defeating and befriending of the ancient dragons is one that is well known, not only that but being the son of godfrey i guess it is to be expected that he's a skilled enough fighter. alas, he still falls to the black knife assassins.

the issue with this though is that it seems death blight is a thing that spawned from godwyn's corpse after his incomplete death so....yeah.

I literally just had a whole post typed out about stormveil like "oh yeah idk what its actually getting destroyed by, i assumed deathblight but idk what godwyn 2 is doing there or if he even has it blah blah blah" but no that is definitely deathblight. Ive seen Rogier's blood stain, that was legit deathblight. But Fromsoft has proven that they do have mercy on us, for not actually putting anything in stormveil that could give you deathblight 🙏 amen

Literally using a piece of Messmer to create a more perfected version -- an ideal version of him, devoid of serpents, devoid of the red hair. Devoid of shadow, with gold in its place...

Godwyn was not her fistborn. Just a substitute. A replacement. A vision of what Messmer should have been. Radiant, and golden.

That's how you end up, when seduced by Those Who Live in Death. When grace is sullied, it rots people from the inside.

and it takes me back to godwyn producing flames that resemble a sullied grace. a decaying, pale gold, sullied with shadows.

and how it rots one from inside, causing the deathblight as we see rogier struggling. and yes, as darian says, it's also because

Their mere existence sullies the guidance of gold.

and the lack of guidance of gold will break people.

but it does rot from inside, this is exactly what happens when you're exposed to the prince of death's flames. it burns one from inside and it purges with putrid thorns.

and it's inevitable to meet death. in the embrace of the prince of death's flames.

or does it not sound very familiar?

when grace is sullied, it rots people from inside. and those stripped from the grace of gold, shall all meet death.

and all of them meet death in the embrace of flames.
