In which St. Croix History reminds us of a Martian with a big butt; Penance’s escape is ambiguous; Avengers Academy Infinity Comic successfully reinvents Emplate; you should not learn to flirt from Vanilla Ice; Jubilee fires two fireworks blasts into the air whilst going aaahhh; and we go in through the ears.

Hofstra University
Tropical “Hygge”
In 1892, young Ariel “Della” Hottel from Virginia worked as a nanny in the former Danish West Indies (U.S. Virgin Islands). While living with American Consul William F. Moore and his family, Della wrote letters back home. This presentation describes Della’s experience as a female foreign worker on St. Croix in the years between the emancipation of its enslaved population and its post-colonial phase. Her perspective widens the niche of women employed in Caribbean colonial settings, an area of history long obscured by national narratives romanticizing the past.
Dr. Dean Guarnaschelli teaches German language and culture at Hofstra University and has almost 30 years of full-time teaching in the NYS public schools.
Wednesday, September 18, 1-2:25 p.m. Roosevelt Hall 203, South Campus
This event is FREE and open to the public. Advance registration is required. More info and to RSVP visit https://tinyurl.com/5etmspjv

1831 Saturday 24 September
8 3/4 2 5/..
Fahrenheit 63° now at 9 3/4 and very fine morning - breakfast at 10 10/.. - out at 11 - market day - nice little covered market for fruit vegetables butter and eggs and fish - then to the cathedral - lately done up and beautifully neat and clean - very fine uninterrupted view from the west door along the nave and choir, for the neat new stone gothic screen, taking in transept lantern tower (covered in on a level with the rest) and one archway of the nave, not surmounted by an organ - this on the left side the choir by the dean's especial orders contrary to the wishes of the majority of chapter and people - went to the top of the lantern tower from which (140 feet high and 50 broad) a good view of the town - saw neither the crypt nor sacristy nor chapter house walked all round the cathedral and then to the college - a good substantial comfortable rather than fine building, but very handsome chapel - east all the windows painted glass very well done by Evans of Shrewsbury - apply to him about window for St. James's church H-x [Halifax]? -
Then round outside the old town wall to the gate bottom of the high street, and to the gate at the top - White Hart decidedly the best Inn - very comfortable - off from Winchester or as there called Winton at 1 40/.. - Had ordered the horses for Romsey, but finding I could see St. Croix (St. Cross village and hospice of) a mile by going by Redbridge, went that way - handsome chapel at St. Cross, and good building round 3 sides of quadrangular court for 13 reduced gentlemen farmers or tradesmen in the gift of the master the Earl of Guildford - turn right (3 miles from Southampton) down to Redbridge - thence to Lyndhurst, and thence to Highcliff - very nice pretty down drive from W- [Winchester] to Redbridge and then very pretty drive thro' the new forest - good oak and beech timber to Lyndhurst and 2 or 3 miles on this side till we came to the heather and moor -
At Highcliffe (the first part of this last stage writing part of pencil copy of note to Lady Gordon) at 6 1/4 - Lady S de R [Stuart de Rothesay] and the girls at the door to receive me and as warmly glad to see me as Lady Ss [Stuart de Rothesay's] manner could permit - Lady S- de R- [Stuart de Rothesay] and Charlotte walked about with me till 6 50/.. - till dusky evening had shut out the magnificent view of sea and Isle of Wight - very agreeably surprised with the place - much better house than I expected, and everything very nice - dressed in 20 minutes - dinner at 7 1/2 - Lord Stuart gone to London to the house of Lords to pass, or throw out, or amend in committee the reform bill - immediately after dinner coffee - then soon after liqueur which nobody tasted - then tea, and Miss Hyriott and the girls went to bed -

Lady S [Stuart de Rothesay] and I tete a tete till twelve and a quarter talked over Vere cholera not in Italy I might have gone well enough for that but said that tho I put it upon this I saw there was a chance of Vs [Vere']s Hastings plan falling thro and so I went as my plans were only for amusement they would do quite as well another time Lady S de R [Stuart de Rothesay] thought V [Vere] was set against going to Italy but changed a little as the opportunity appeared escaping by my going to Spain I thought it difficult to find out V [Vere] reserved I always told her of this fancied she might have some especial reason against going Lady S de R [Stuart de Rothesay] did not know but on Mr Desbrows telling her she was going to be married she seemed rather confused Lady S de R [Stuart de Rothesay] said it was a Scotchman whose name she had never heard before but I pretended ignorance she told me too that Lady Buckinghamshire had been uneasy about Charles Stuart I merely said V [Vere] would certainly not give in to it and I said no more
We talked a little of old Lady Ss [Stuart] teazing herself about money matters and then of embassy expenses the maitre d hotels book came to more than the salary talked a little too of the estate here and late exchanges of land and of Lady Gordon I feared she had not done right in giving up going the journey might have been expensive but had she staid long enough she might have saved by it more than she will do now - said perhaps we might travel together next spring Lady S [Stuart de Rothesay] merely replied she thought the recollection that her mother was eighty would keep her at home - Lady S de R [Stuart de Rothesay] had before casually said perhaps they (the Stuarts) might travel of which I had seemed to take no notice shall I by any chance be with them ever again? spoke of their getting the embassy to Paris again and see that it would not be refused -
Came to my room at 12 1/4 - till 1 35/.. had Cameron and wrote all the above of today - very fine day - Fahrenheit 65°. now at 1 35/.. tonight - the wind whistles - but that it must perpetually do here, the house so exposed -

Continuing into our fifth day of pride, I’ve got some more black lgbtq+ reps for you! Happy pride month!
1. Rashad Taylor: Taylor is a political consultant and former politician from Atlanta, Georgia. A Democrat, he served from 2009 to 2013 in the Georgia House of Representatives, representing the City of Atlanta from the 55th House District. He was first elected in November 2008, at 27 years old, making him the youngest serving member of the General Assembly. After re-election in 2010, he was elected Vice Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth highest ranking leadership position in the House. At 31, Taylor was the youngest member of the General Assembly leadership, House or Senate, Democrat or Republican. Taylor was the first openly gay male to serve in the Georgia General Assembly and was only the second openly gay African American male state legislator in the United States.
2. Althea Garrison: Garrison is an independent American politician from Boston, Massachusetts, who served on the Boston City Council as an at-large councilor. The fact that Garrison had been formerly known as a male was not widely publicized until shortly after she was elected to the legislature. When the Boston Herald asked whether she was a man, Garrison denied it and ended the conversation when asked about her past, including her name change.
3. Clifford Ian Simpson “Kevin Abstract”: Abstract is an American rapper, singer-songwriter, and director, and is a founding member of Brockhampton. Abstract released his debut album, MTV1987, in 2014, and received attention from a number of major music blogs and magazine publications. Abstract came out as gay in 2016 and is very open about the matter on his records, saying he'll rap about being gay as long as he can imagine a fan in need of a voice.
4. Audre Lorde: Lorde was an American writer, feminist, womanist, librarian, and civil rights activist. She was a self-described “black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet,” who dedicated both her life and her creative talent to confronting and addressing injustices of racism, sexism, classism, heterosexism, and homophobia. As a poet, she is best known for technical mastery and emotional expression, as well as her poems that express anger and outrage at civil and social injustices she observed throughout her life. Her poems and prose largely deal with issues related to civil rights, feminism, lesbianism, illness and disability, and the exploration of black female identity. Lorde and her life partner, black feminist Dr. Gloria I. Joseph, resided together on Joseph's native land of St. Croix. Together they founded several organizations such as the Che Lumumba School for Truth, Women's Coalition of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, Sisterhood in Support of Sisters in South Africa, and Doc Loc Apiary.
5. Alain LeRoy Locke: Locke was an American writer, philosopher, educator, and patron of the arts. Distinguished as the first African-American Rhodes Scholar in 1907, Locke was the philosophical architect —the acknowledged "Dean"— of the Harlem Renaissance. As a result, popular listings of influential African Americans have repeatedly included him. On March 19, 1968, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. proclaimed: "We're going to let our children know that the only philosophers that lived were not Plato and Aristotle, but W. E. B. Du Bois and Alain Locke came through the universe." Locke was homosexual, and may have encouraged and supported other gay African-Americans who were part of the Harlem Renaissance.

Teen Heroes by Appearances
Just for fun, I wondered who were the most frequently used Teen Heroes, and decided to share my data in list form.
Now, for this list I’m basically going to cut anyone in Spider-Man’s “Class” or “Age Category” because other wise the list would be dominated by his cast and that’s more work than I care to bother with.
I’m also going to split things up between X-Men and other Marvel characters, because X-Men teens are notorious for being shoved into background shots and not really having stories of their own (among other oddities with Comicivin’es system of ‘by appearance’ listing).
I’ll do an overall section, then one for the 5 rough “Classes” that have been gathered over time. Generally, this focuses on one class a decade until the 2000s (IE: New Mutants, Generation X, and New X-Men are all classes that help define other heroes). After that, things break down as the Sliding Timescale Marvel uses expands.
But, for ease:
Generation 1: New Mutants and related. Generation 2: Generation X and most New Warriors Generation 3: New X-Men: Academy X, Runaways, Young Avengers, etc. Generation 4: Kamala Khan and her friends.
Generation 5 is Katie Power, Molly Hayes, and Bloodstone, but there aren’t quite enough of them that have regular appearances to really make a solid top 10. But don’t worry. They do show up.
Anyway, here we go!
Generation 1 top 10 X-Heroes
1. Cannonball 2. Sunspot 3. Warpath 4. Madrox 5. Rictor 6. Strong Guy 7. Cypher 8. X-Man 9. Empath
There are other “heroes” in this age group, but they are REALLY obscure and this is already a deep dive. A lot of them are in the top 10, which given how old they are, makes sense.
Generation 1 Top 10 X-Heroines
1. Kitty Pryde 2. Magik 3. Rachel Grey 4.Wolfsbane 5. Moonstar 6. Magma 7. Outlaw 8. Lifeguard 9. Venus Dee Milo 10. U-Go Girl
Kitty is super used and a mainstay X-Woman for years. Magik is has been a background character almost as long as she has been a regular hero. Main New mutants are to be expected, as are main X-Statix members (that has had a LOT of reprints). Outlaw is a Deadpool character.
I can’t explain Lifeguard. And, really, no one should.
Generation 1 Top 10 Marvel Heroes
1. Nova (Richard Rider) 2. Cloak 3. Speedball
Not many non-X teens in this generation. These are the oldest members of the New Warriors, at least in terms of publication. Most are more contemporary with the Gen-X than the New Mutants as near as I can tell.
Generation 1 Top 10 Marvel Heroines
1. Dagger 2. Talisman 3. Smasher (Kane) Same as the previous verse. Smasher is a newer creation, but she is Cannonball’s wife...
Generation 2 top 10 X-Heroes
1. Chamber 2. Skin 3. Wild child 4. Synch 5. Thunderbird (Shaara) 6. Maggot 7. Bedlam 8. Emplate 9. Mondo 10. Vivisector
Most of Gen-X is in the top three. Wild Child is Wolverine’s supporting cast of a sort. Hell, Gen-X even got Mondo in this. Man, Generation 2 does not have much to offer if Mondo and Shaara can get into the top 10.
Generation 2 Top 10 X-Heroines
1. Jubilee 2. Boom-Boom 3. Monet st. Croix 4. Husk 5. Hollow 6. Dead Girl There are others, but they have tens of appearances at best near as I can tell. Generation X and X-Statix. Not much else to go on.
Generation 2 Top 10 Marvel Heroes
1. Darkhawk 2. Night Thrasher 3. Phil Ulrich 4. Manifold 5. 3-D Man II/Triathalon 6. Sleepwalker 7. Slapstick 8. Stonewall 9. Rocket Racer 10. Prodigy (Slingers)
Just enough better-known teen heroes to fill this out.
Generation 2 Top 10 Marvel Heroines
1. Squirrel Girl 2. Shuri 3. Firebird 4. Elsa Bloodstone 5. Turbo 6. Silhouette 7. Jolt 8. Synapse 9. Mattie Franklin 10. Ultragirl
Man, a lot of these characters have been screwed over in later years.
Generation 3 top 10 X-Heroes
1. Rockslide 2. Anole 3. Hellion 4. Quinten Quire 5. Elixer 6. Prodigy 7. Glob Herman 8. Match 9. Gentle 10. Beak
It tickles me endlessly that Quire still deosn’t have as many appearances as the top 3 of the New X-Men. More stories, but not as many appearances.
Generation 3 Top 10 X-Heroines
1. X-23 2. Pixie 3. Armor 4. Hope Summers 5. Surge 6. Dust 7. Mercury 8. Blindfold 9. Bling! 10. Trance
X-23 and Pixie being on top is pretty obvious. One got a mini and is constantly in the background, and X-23 is the Harley Quinn of Marvel Comics. If I didn’t include Hope in this generation (She is hard to pin down), the #10 spot would go to Loa.
Generation 3 Top 10 Marvel Heroes
1. Wiccan 2. Alex Power 3. Amadeus Cho 4. Noh-Var 5. Hulkling 6. Thunderstrike (Eric) 7. Eli Bradley 8. Rage 9. Chase Stein 10. Reptil
Generation 3 is probably my favorite Generation. So this list tickles me. Wiccan gets the most appearacnes for many reasons. Eli Bradley ranks where his replacement doesn’t. Reptil is in the top 10 (#11 is Victor Macha). Jut, a lot of amusement for me.
Generation 3 Top 10 Marvel Heroines
1. Kate Bishop 2. Julie Power 3. Nico Minoru 4. Quake 5. Spider-Girl (Corazon) 6. White TIger (Ava Ayal) 7. Karolina Dean 8. America Chavez 9. Hazmat 10. Finesse
More amusement. Kate gets the top spot from all the solo stuff she’s been doing. Julie is the ‘oldest’ character, and Nico is the most popular Runaway. That she outdid quake surprises me. Hazmat made it into the top 10, as did Finesse.
Generation 4 top 10 X-Heroes
1. Genesis 2. Broo 3. Kid Gladiator 4. Goldballs 5. Jimmy Hudson 6. Eye-Boy 7. Squid Boy 8. Zero 9. Leech 10. Artie Maddicks
As I’ve said, differentiating between the generation of Nico Minoru and the generation of Kamala Khan is REALLY hard. Zero might be in Generation 3, but so little thought was put into defining the new Generation on the X0-Men side of things, the intermix regularly. It’s just a mess.
Generation 4 Top 10 X-Heroines
1. Oya 2. Transonic 3. Sprite 4. Negasonic Teenage Warhead II 5. Amko Kobayashi 6. Nature Girl 7. Aero I I’m sure there’s more to fill out this generation, but after I hit “The third eldes Guthrie child who was depowered and never spoken of again” I figured it was time to stop.
And now for the overall numbers!
Top 10 X-Heroes
1. Cannonball 2. Sunspot 3. Warpath 4. Rockslide 5. Jamie Madrox 6. Anole 7. Warlock 8. Rictor 9. Hellion 10. Strong Guy
An interesting mix, really. Rockslide hasn’t had many stories, but he is very easy to work into the background. So is Anole.
Top 10 Marvel Heroes 1. Franklin Richards 2. Nova (Richard Rider) 3. Cloak 4. Miles Morales 5. Wiccan 6. Alex Power 7. Amadeus Cho 8. Noh-Varr 9. Nova (Sam Alexander) 10. Hulkling
Franklin has grown up a bunch since the 1960s, despite his own attempts to keep everyone he knows young. Miles is the newest character in the roster, with but has earned his high placement.
Top 10 X-Heroines
1. Kitty Pryde 2. Magik 3. Jubilee 4. Rachel Grey 5. Wolfsbane 6. Moonstar 7. X-23 8. Boom-Boom 9. Pixie 10. Siryn
Again, remember, Kitty Pride is the same age as the ‘average’ New Mutant (who themselves ranged in age from 14 to 17), and easily got to the top. Despite being dead for so long, Magik also got a lot of appearances in. X-23 is one of only 2 characters (the other being pixie) to break into the top 10 from post-2000. Monet just falls in at 11.
Top 10 Marvel Heroines
1. Dagger 2. Cassie Lang/Stinger/Stature 3. Valeria Richards 4. Kate Bishop 5. Kamala Khan 6. Katie Power 7. Squirrel Girl 8. Molly Hayes 9. Nico Minoru 10. Quake
An interesting assemblage. Cassie is the ‘oldest’ character, but she has only been a hero for a short period of time. Kate has had a few solos to her name, Kamala is a blockbuster. Squirrel Girl is a meme gag, and Quake got on TV early.
Molly and Nico are the odd ones, mostly because of their order. Molly does not have as many stories as Nico does, but because she was tied into a few X-Men stories, she got lumped in with their international reprints that Comicvine keeps track of. Otherwise, I doubt she’d be in the top 10.
Meaning Anya Corazon would likely have the #10 spot.
But, this is just of going off the Comicvine numbers. If someone wants to run more accurate numbers...
Good luck!

Towards A Better X-Men
Generation X v1 is problematic. I love it, deeply. I still think the book is great. I would suggest it to anyone who is interested in X-Men. But Scott Lobdell’s M, specifically Claudette St. Croix, was a horrible sort of depiction of autistic people. It’s tough when a characterization in comics ages this poorly, especially for a character so unique and so full of possibility. The media has been terrible about depictions of autistic women and this particular mismanagement has never been rectified. Despite their older sister retaining her powers through M-Day the St. Croix Twins, Claudette and Nicole, have not been seen since Generation X v1 #58. That, itself, would be poor, but Claudette isn’t alone in being lost like this. It’s worth asking for more from the X-Men Franchise when it comes to representing autism.
From the relatively humble beginnings of Phalanx Covenant, which was not a very good crossover, a few moments were etched indelibly into my eyes. Never will I ever forget Blink’s sacrifice or the Phalanx spires of techno-organic flesh covered in soundless screaming human faces. I had read some of adjectiveless, X-Force, and Excalibur at the time and when a new book that had Jubilee AND a character named Everett in it came out? It was over for me. I couldn’t be torn away from the page. In Generation X’s introduction M was the powerhouse. Gifted with The Package (Super-Strength, Super-Speed, Invulnerability, and Flight) and a Telepath to boot she was the haughty and superior Veronica Lodge to Paige Guthrie’s Kentucky Betty Cooper. It would turn out that M was secretly the twins Claudette and Nicole St. Croix impersonating their older sister and that their occasional bouts of catatonic stupors were the result of Claudette’s autism.
My little sister was born in 1994, the same year Generation X debut, and she is autistic. But far from the stupor and idiot savantism demonstrated from Lobdell’s depiction of Claudette’s personality my sister Madisson provided me first-hand experience with the reality of an autistic child with pervasive developmental delay. In caring for my little sister I have learned a great deal and now that we are adults she never stops teaching me. I have had the fortune to meet more than a few members of the autistic community. If I could, please allow me to communicate one specific flaw with Generation X:
It is not okay to depict the autistic as wordless cyphers with magical abilities and no personality. Ever.
People with autism are People first and foremost. Sadly Generation X v1 at no point put in the time or effort into making Claudette a person. Where Nicole was the girl we saw as M for years, the one who got development and speaking lines, Claudette was a mystery and not a character. I cannot excuse that. It’s a damning mark against the book and hopefully one that people will only have dimmer views on in the future. With any luck someone who cares may bring these characters back into the fold but they haven’t been seen in years and there is precedence that they never will again.
Laura Dean is an Alpha Flight character who was autistic and also a twin. Her backstory involves her parents being mutantphobes and trying to abort Laura’s twin sister. That sister fled as a foetus into Liveworld where it would grow to become Goblyn, a blue skinned creature with sharp fangs and teeth. In their original incarnation they could swap places when Laura was endangered, but that was changed as Laura grew in her ability to control her portals to other worlds. We haven’t seen this character since 1994, or so says the Marvel Wikia. Not being on the autism spectrum myself I cannot speak to the original depiction being well handled or not, I would guess not, but either way the character is certainly unseen in just a little under 25 years. The similarities between Laura Dean and Claudette are stark. Both mutant twins of African descent, both pairs only allow limited expression of each member in their initial outing. Both have their problem of cohabitating with their sibling’s body resolved before vanishing from continuity.
There was no effort put into Claudette. Monet St. Croix is the Black Female X-Man with the second most appearances in the 616. That the St. Croix Twins have been missing for this long is curious to say the least. But then we don’t see much of Emma’s sisters either. But I, at least, ask that Marvel do better. Part of what makes the X-Men Franchise is that it embraces and espouses diversity. We need stories about autistic mutants. It doesn’t have to be any more complicated than that. Writing those stories ensures that mutants represent all minorities, as they should. Generation X Volume 1 suffers greatly in retrospect for not taking the opportunity to do something meaningful with the characters it had.
