Willow matters. She matters! I love her so much, because she’s the glue that holds all of the hexsquad together. She is the one shared connection! She is everyone's first friend! She’s so hard on herself but in the end she will always matter to them!

Willow is Luz’s first friend. They hit it off as soon as they met in that clearing, and Willow was Luz’s contact with all the other witches her age—especially Gus and Amity! Not only that, Willow turned the little seed in Luz’s pocket into a huge, beautiful plant. She showed Luz how magic was inside of nature in the Boiling Isles, setting her on the path to discover glyphs!

Willow was Amity’s first friend. They were best friends. Breaking up hurts Amity, and it hurts Willow. Amity changes her ways because she never wanted to be a bully in the first place. She always just wanted to be Willow’s friend. And, years after their friendship ends, Willow is Amity’s link to Luz. Luz, who helps Amity change and befriend Willow again.

Willow was Gus’ first friend. When they first met, Gus thought people only liked him for his skill in illusions. But Willow was there when he had the least control of his magic, and she kept being there. She showed Gus he mattered to someone. She gave him his confidence.

Willow was Hunter’s first friend. Before her, he had Belos abusing him, Eda and King making fun of him, none of the coven heads respecting him, Amity fighting against him. Even his team-up with Luz was reluctant. But Willow wanted him from the start. She saw a star flyer, she trusted him, she depended on him. She showed Hunter that he could find a place outside the Emperor’s coven!

Willow feels like she has to be strong to mean something. But she means so much and it’s never because she’s strong. She riles up the crowd at Eda’s petrification with just her words. She brings together the entire Hexsquad because she’s a good, kind person. Every one of them cares deeply about her. If she lost her magic tomorrow, lost all her muscle, became not-even-half-a-witch Willow, she would be just as important to every single one of them!

It’s the beauty and tragedy of her character: Willow doesn’t see how she matters.

She thinks she has to do something to have worth to her friends. Has to be strong and wise, not show weakness, be the perfect team captain. But that’s not what made her friends love her. They love her because she was the first person to love THEM for who THEY are!

One of the central themes of this show is that “us weirdos have to stick together.” And Willow? She’s the original weirdo. She brings all the kids together. 

No, Willow may not see it herself yet, but oh… Willow matters.

Heck, I mean, 12 years old—that's middle school. 7th grade. I know that seems young once people are in college, or even high school, but like...

Back in middle school everyone still felt like they were grownups compared to everyone else. People were dating, you were learning new and harder things, you were still a full person.

What I'm trying to say is, yeah. He's just a kid. He's younger than the others, so he has less experience and coping mechanisms than them. All this awful stuff is going to effect him more.

But at the same time, he's only two years younger. In America, he'd be in middle school. That's a full-fledged person. He's not going through this unaware like a toddler would. He knows what's happening, and he's making choices just like the rest of them.

That mixture of less experience and just as much involvement is what makes things worse for him.

Something like being stranded in the human realm is going to hit him harder. Especially because he's going through puberty. He was the only one to break down and cry in King's Tide.

However, he feels like he's just as mature as the others. He's in the same grade as them! He's a prodigy!

It becomes another problem. He thinks he should be able to handle this. He puts on a brave face. And when he falls short—though no fault of his own—he blames himself.

Like in Labyrinth Runners, where he feels like it's his fault that Adrian found out about the Looking Glass Ruins. And he's just a kid! It's not like anyone else at that school could do better. But he feels like he has to do better.

Or in Thanks to Them, when he says it's nice to see Hunter happy, because "one of us might as well be." I wonder, does he feel like he should be happy? That he should be able to have fun in the human world just like he's always dreamed of?

Even in For the Future, he blames himself for not being able to help Hunter! Thinks it's because he couldn't get himself to break the topic of grimwalkers to him! But really, Luz is the only one of them we know has experience with grief. Of course they're going to have trouble helping Hunter. But still, Gus feels like he should have done better.

To me, that struggle is one of the biggest parts of Gus' character. He IS young. And he's a prodigy surrounded by people older than him, going up against soldiers and coven heads far more experienced than him, getting caught up in a disaster—the Day of Unity and Collector—so much bigger than him.

And yet, he thinks he should be able to handle it all. He focuses on the mistakes he makes instead of realizing just how strong he's been to make it this far.

So yeah. Gus' age makes things harder for him. I think sometimes it can be hard for people to remember that. After his growth spurt, he does look older. And so often he's the comic relief bringing lightness to a scene, so it can be easy to forget he's having a hard time too.

(Anyone ever think about how he's going through all the same stress as Willow, but when she's having a breakdown and he's being actively smothered in vines, he's still able to stay calm and assure her that he's okay, and that she can let it out? Because oof. That's one strong kid.)

Though as a quick qualifier, I think it can be a disservice to his character to focus too much on his youth. I've seen him portrayed as just the "little-brother comic relief" character quite a few times before. He is young, but he is also just as capable as the others in many ways. And really, that contrast is what brings out the most interesting parts of him. Both in angst, and in happier things.

I truly feel like we, as a fandom, don’t talk about or take Gus’ pain seriously. He’s twelve. He’s a baby. And he’s constantly doubting himself, blaming himself, sometimes outright hating himself. And again, he’s just a kid.

I just realized I can easily put earrings on my Mattholomule plush without hurting him at all so basically I'm unstoppable now and Mattholomule has a stylish galderstone earring

Matt’s heavy boots crashed through the forest floor. He wasn’t stomping, no, he just didn’t care enough to try and be more quiet. It wasn’t like there were any actually dangerous demons in this part of the forest anyways. 

Bria was a little ahead of him, chattering about whatever dumb treasure she was taking them to try and find this time, occasionally hacking at a vine with her machete. Gus was right at her side. His stupid eyes were latched onto her with his stupid cute listening face because of course this was some dumb new adventure for him instead of a typical boring weekend. He was also latched onto her other hand. Their hands looked so pretty and soft and dumb together. 

Matt was not sulking.

“Oh, here’s a landmark! Let me check my map.”

The only thing Matt saw was a few trees growing twisted together. “Pfft, kinda a dumb landmark if you ask me,” he sneered. 

“Hey Matty, hold this for me for a sec!” Bria chirped, like she hadn’t heard him. 

Mattholomule automatically obeyed as she passed him Gus’ hand. 

Gus squeaked. Matt stared down at their hands. Gus’ fingers, which had been straight at first, hesitantly closed around Matt’s hand. In the corner of Matt’s vision, Bria had her face buried in her map. 

The afternoon air suddenly felt uncomfortably warm. 

“Aha, this way!” Bria shoved the map back in her pouch, then grabbed Matt’s other hand. “C’mon boys, let’s go!”

Matt, dazed, let himself get dragged along behind her and tightened his grip on Gus. 

Their hands were soft.

Have you ever written the "there is only one bed" trope?

ohhhhh, this is a good one. I don’t think so.

I’ve always said that if I write a one-bed fic with Gus and Matt, it ends up with them both sleeping on the floor because neither will take the bed from the other. I’ve practically written the fic already in my head if I had a setting tbh, I know how it would go so well XD

I think I was going to have a one bed scene / plot in a story for the dating sim series. The story never really shaped into anything solid, but the idea was that Gus and Matt get transported into the dating sim and have to make it out by completing the story or something using their expert game knowledge. And since the bed is how to end each day in the game, and they’re both players, they both have to sleep in the bed to advance to the next day :p video game logic hehehe

actually, found the doc just now. maybe they take turns sleeping in the bed? idk, it’s literally just this scene. Enjoy!

I think in this scene Matt’s sleeping in the bed is the idea? again, dunno it’s been… almost 2 years since I wrote this apparently 😭 time flies…

Concept: Mattelene (Mattholomule x Celene (moon girl)) dynamic where Celene is going "I can fix him"

She uses every last oracle magic technique she knows trying to mitigate Matt's horrible bad luck. It works... a little. He's just too powerful no matter how many misfortunes she tries to avert </3

Mattholomule thinks she might have a crush on him since she's hanging around him so much and talking to him and wanting to hang out 😏 (<- he does not realize they're dating)
