Another wardrobe connection that has fascinated me: Karen wears the same blue flowered blouse in DDS2 when she tells Frank he is not a monster and in DDS3 when she confesses to Foggy that she killed James Wesley. She wants him to tell her she is a bad person, since she shot Wesley seven times because she wanted him dead.

I can’t think of another time Karen repeats an outfit, so I feel like this is an intentional choice in the show.

Karen fights for Frank to retain his humanity, always seeing him for who he is, despite what he has done, because if even he has a chance of doing some good in this world, with any hope for redemption, then maybe she can too. Otherwise, she must concede—she is a monster too.

It is endlessly frustrating as a viewer Frank never knows any of this about Karen when their connection is woven into the very fabric of her character.

I really wish it had been Frank to be the first person with whom she could talk about Wesley with. It would have made for such a powerful scene. (But shout out to Foggy for being the best goddamn friend ever and caring so much about our girl.)

Matt Murdock's Age (because it bothers me)

it just doesn't make sense and I refuse to believe that Moon Knight is canonically younger. The marvel wiki says Matt was born in 1985 which grrrr does not make sense if Daredevil S1 takes place in 2014. What was he doing for so long that he didn't pass the bar until he was 29? You're telling overachieving nerd Matthew Murdock who has wanted to be lawyer since he was 9 was fucking around with his degree?

If Matt graduated high school at 18, finished undergrad at 22, and law school at 25(and interned over the summer between 2nd and 3rd year or the summer after 3rd year), he should be 25. Obviously Charlie is older so I think it makes more sense to say that Matt either took a year off between high school and undergrad (unlikely), did a whole extra year in undergrad (makes sense, if he wanted to do a double major. Although, it's more expensive, I honestly just think he'd do 18 credits), or took a year off between undergrad and law school (year to study for the LSAT or work or something). Plus a year at L&Z as an intern and to study for the bar. Putting him at 27 at the start of DDS1 in 2014.

I want to kiss this person on the mouth, they made a whole spreadsheet with dates mwah. So based on this:

DDS1 2014 Matt is 27 DDS2 July to December 2015 Matt is 28 Defenders November 2016 Matt is 29 DDS3 Matt wakes up around Jan 2017, season takes place Oct 2017 Matt is 30

There are some inconsistencies (Matt saying Stick has been gone for 20 years), I'm choosing to believe Matt is bad at Matth and is rounding up to be hyperbolic.

The snap happens in 2018, Matt is 31 If you think he was snapped, he's 31 in 2023 when he's snapped back If you think he wasn't snapped, he's 36 in 2023. She Hulk takes place in 2025, making Matt either 33 or 38.

Marvel (usually) likes to make the characters younger than the actor and while we'll have to wait to see if Matt was blipped, I'm inclined to believe he's in his early thirties rather than late thirties. Especially if Disney wants to soft reboot him.

it's actually so noteworthy that daryl gets 1) beth's knife AND 2) the costume design incorporates "beth's shoelaces" into his get up (i've always been half-sold on this but honestly what could be the reason they did such a purposeful change? idk, seems deliberate to me)-- throughout history knives/daggers have been associated with marriages and the shoelaces could be taken as a "tying of the knot". NONE of his other love interests have been posthumously tied to him this way (we don't know yet what might happen in DDS3 but still). there's of course the bridal carry lol. idk... there's so much wedding/union symbolism around bethyl. there's literally a mark on daryl's body that will always be a reminder of beth...i just...love them so much

The shoelaces always seems kinda iffy to me. Of all the things to take from Beth, why those? My biggest gripe about the knife is why did it take 3 weeks to give it to Daryl. Why could t it be done when they buried her? If they even buried her? Why doesn’t Maggie have anything of hers? She was her little sister after all!!! It just makes no sense to me. Also where is the knife now? Does he still have it?

It’s argued that both are allegories for Jesus, but it isn’t really explicit. I think it’s a stretch for Shadow. Knuckles literally walks on water in the Archie comics though. I’d probably put Knuckles as allegory since that’s why people are voting for him, and Shadow as headcanon.

i didn't get an answer yesterday and I need to make the graphic so right now I have them both as fandom meme. For Knuckles, what exactly makes him a jesus allegory? Walking on water doesn't make a Jesus Allegory, it's just imagery. Is he a spiritual teacher? Is he a political or social activities? Do bitches hate him because he's challenges the status quo? Does he get killed by the state or people in power? Is he resurrected?

for the next round, I'm including a banner for when a character is canonically catholic, implied to be, headcanon, jesus allegory or not catholic (anglicat). For the sonic characters(knuckles and Shadow), are they coded or is it a headcanon???

hello!! i had a whole answer written for this post with a bunch of tidbits of backstory for Martha, who i’m going to introduce in the next chapter but for some reason i refreshed the mobile app and the draft deleted itself so you get random facts about the new characters i’m introducing in chapter five instead :3

(under the cut because i really know how to ramble when i’m slightly tipsy and it’s 1am) (yes i’m aware that it’s monday/technically tuesday now)

I don’t think this is going to be a surprise to anyone but SURPRISE! Martha’s a vampire, has been for hundreds of years. She’s about 324 when she’s first introduced and was transformed in 1717 when she was 27 years old. She can stand to be in the sun for short periods of time with little damage or pain but is decently paranoid after she saw several vampires who couldn’t turn to dust in the 1800s. I don’t have set rules for vampires in this fic i just need her to be able to leave the house during the day in the future and this seemed like the best option.

She also used to take care of a lot of other more supernatural creatures before 1990, but has slowed down after getting married and taking care of her nephew (JJ). There is still the occasional guest in the townhouse though. The current guest (I call him ‘blonde guy’ to avoid saying his name but wow try and guess who it is i literally could not be more obvious at any point in time) is not a supernatural creature but instead a long-time friend of her husband Stephen. The pair met when they were 21/22ish and blonde guy was working as/studying to be a mortuary assistant and Stephen was starting his prep for medical school. Blonde guy and Martha were pretty skeptical of each other at first but get along great now, and she’s happy to let him stay as long as he needs while he’s in New York.

Blonde guys reasoning for being in NYC is pretty plot relevant but also not really?? he’s gonna leave and come back a couple of times but he has a temporary job as a psychologist at metro-general hospital near hell’s kitchen. idk where metro gen actually is in the cannon i really need to rewatch the show again so for now let’s pretend it’s just outside hell’s kitchen.

Stephen doesn’t really become plot relevant until the point in time when i reach the defenders/ddS3 arc of the fic but he’ll have his time in the sun before then it’s okay he’s well taken care of (just kidding he never sleeps and is usually late for work).

Atlas is my darling boy and i love him very much. He’s an intern under Stephen at Metro-gen, hoping to be a surgeon, but it depends what he enjoys most. So far it’s general surgery because he’s made friends with an aspiring anaesthesiologist and he’s convinced they’ll work together amazingly well (spoiler alert they do i love you tabitha). At this point in time he’s only a few months into his internship and 25 years old. Martha and Stephen invited him to live with them and JJ after there was a black mould outbreak in his apartment building, and now he drives stephen and himself to work in the mornings, and sometimes JJ to school if the weathers bad and he’s not working too early in the morning.

Most of this probably only makes sense to me right now but that’s okay it will in the future

Maybe I should get out my red nose and funny-colored wig, but I’m willing that they’re saving Karen for a more Punisher-centric show if they aren’t bringing her back/can’t bring her back for Daredevil. I want to believe Feige isn’t dumb, he has to know how big a deal Kastle is and how magnetic Jon & Deb are in scenes together. I’m probably not going to give up hope until the show airs. Future me can deal with processing the loss if it comes 🤷🏻‍♀️

As much as I’m happy for Jon coming back I’m also sad as The Hollywood Reporter is saying that both Deborah and Elden won’t be back as Karen and Foggy. :( They’re not sure yet if the roles will be recast or just written out. My guess is maybe a mix as I’ve already seen rumors they recast Vanessa and possibly Elektra, as well as given Fisk and Vanessa their son pretty much confirming this Matt and now Frank are the MCU’s versions and not the part of the multiverse the Netflix shows took place in. So that could support a recast likely for Foggy. I personally don’t think Karen’s even going to be a character especially with Matt already having at least 3 love interests in the MCU now with Jennifer/She-Hulk, Maya/Echo, and if there is a new Elektra. Though I still wouldn’t rule out Karen if they make a “Punisher” movie/show and maybe this MCU version of her, hopefully still Deborah, knows Frank but not Matt. I’m still going to watch as I still love all the characters and to see the MCU versions of them, but I will miss Deborah and Elden and possibly their characters so much.

ETA: I forgot about how in the comics storyline of “Born Again” all that bad stuff that happened to Karen so it’s a good thing she’s not there for at least that so none of it will happen to her, but still said she likely doesn’t exist in the MCU or at least everything that happened in the Netflix “Daredevil” show never happened in the MCU (except maybe “The Punisher” which would be interesting how they’d write that).

Look y’all, this came to me while I was in the shower and is cracky and absurd and one of the best things I’ve ever written. Two and a half years later and I’m still obsessed with this ridiculous little fic. It’s insane. It’s hilarious. It’s ALSO TECHNICALLY CANON. And I love it so much. It never fails to bring a smile to my face.

2 Good People, Bad Beer (post S3 SethKate)

Seth and Kate bonding over shitty beer and making out against the back of a car after surviving Matanzas, what more can you ask for? I re-read this one A Lot. It’s so good. I love it so much. Seth being dumb about them while Kate is sitting there super certain about them both is one of my favorite dynamics to write for them.

3 not the same (post TPS2/DDS3 Kastle)

Maria gets a pass out of the afterlife and uses it to browbeat her erstwhile husband into committing to get a better apartment and matchmaking him and Karen. Because of course she would. Maria Castle totally ships it, and it works because I said so and it’s not like anyone in the comics actually stays dead anyway.

4 watching over someone from afar (post TPS2 Kastle)

This was a BEHEMOTH inspired by a Sailor Moon quote and it’s such a delight. There’s nothing I love more than putting Karen together with the Lieberman family, and especially with Sarah. The dramatic scenes between Karen and Frank, especially the one right after Frank called David freaking out because he thought she was missing when she was really just snowed in at their house was just so much fun to write and it’s a beast of a fic but so much fun to go back to. Also fun to throw in those bits of Karen traumatizing Foggy on purpose.

5 There Is No Easy Way To Explain (post TPS1 Kastle)

“Karen, I know you kind of got thrown in to the whole paralegal thing, but did Matt and Foggy not teach you a thing about ethics? Specifically, the ethics of not sleeping with your client? Especially the clients on trial for almost forty fucking homicides.” - okay but like, this fic has some of the best one-liners I’ve ever written, and Marci’s POV is SUCH a fun sandbox to play around in. She’s just like..how do you LIVE and Karen’s like…hot marine with an eight-pack ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Honorable mentions, because I could not resist: what died didn’t stay dead (you’re alive, you’re alive in my head) SethKate, post S3 and Seth just does not understand how Kate is alive because he’s in awe of her, which, duh. Hi! Idk if you’ve ever answered this before, but I’m confused as to what exactly a conflict of interest is? I’ve googled it multiple times and I think I sort of get the gist, but it’s one of those things that I can’t entirely wrap my head around without someone basically spelling out to me. Like- if someone is a defence attorney, would they be allowed to defend their best friend in court? Or it that conflict of interest? How does that work?

You're totally right to be confused - it is confusing! A conflict of interest is literally anything that could cause the attorney to struggle to prioritize the interests of their client.

(Which makes it hard to google. I googled it and got this, which, yeah. I only know how it makes sense because I took a whole class where like 50% of the class was on conflicts of interest lol.)

The specific example I see more than anything in criminal law goes like this:

Two defendants are in a car; illegal drugs are also in the car. To whom do the drugs belong??? Each defendant claim the drugs belong to the other!

Obviously a defense attorney can't in the same breath argue "these specific drugs belong to X, not Y" and also argue "these specific drugs belong to Y, not X." So if the attorney takes X's case, then there is now a conflict of interest with Y.

This is also seen in DDS3 where DA Tower points out that Matt and Foggy aren't just there to protect Nadeem: they want to use Nadeem to take down Fisk. This is fraught with risk that something that would be effective at taking down Fisk would also really hurt Nadeem's case. But Nadeem waives that conflict of interest (albeit informally, and in part because Nadeem is also interested in taking down Fisk), so Matt and Foggy are able to continue representing him.

The best friend thing is a conflict of interest if the attorney is unable to be objective. There are hints of this in the Ella series, although it's never explicit. Whether it's Foggy representing Matt or Matt representing Karen, there are times when the attorney makes choices based on how they think of their client as their friend or wife. For example, as Marci pointed out in You Are My Strength, Matt should have told Marci what he knew about Karen's history with Kevin - and he didn't. Marci, at least, believes that this was not the sort of detail he'd forget to mention if Karen were just a normal client.

But again, the conflict can be waived by the client. So if the best friend (or wife, or whomever) trusts the attorney to be objective, they can agree to have the attorney represent them even though the relationship isn't strictly attorney-client.

Anyway, overall, a conflict of interest is anything that causes the attorney to care about anything other than the client's case. It's very broad.

I feel the final fight in DDS3 would be improved if Karen was up there fighting alongside Matt, and it was a 2 on 1 on 1 fight. I think that would've improved things over having Karen and Foggy sidelined.

You mean against Bullseye or Fisk? I liked that it was Matt alone but it could have been great to have Karen and Foggy show up right when Matt is so close to killing Fisk... so that they could see how he managed to stop himself and showed right there and then the great hero he is. Considering their reluctance to accept his vigilantism for two entire seasons (+ Defenders), it would have served them well. Then add to that a scene towards the end where they apologize and finally choose to accept that side of him and it would have been amazing.

He begins writing down the words phonetically, his root canal patient eyeing Slife with desperation, a bite block shoved inside his aching mouth.
