I'm an Illegal Alien Tourist in DC - Pt. 2/2 I had a financial appointment in downtown DC this morning and decided to walk around and experience the oddness of a handful of people moving about. Some people are working and there were several getting their running workouts done. The hustle and bustle was no where to be found. The stillness of the #NationalMall was probably only matched by the days around the September 11th attacks. I stumbled across this garden outside the Smithsonian Castle (Mary Livingston Ripley Garden). I'm sure it's peaceful anytime, not just during the pandemic. So yes, I played the silly tourist today, but with the 'Stay at Home' order in place, I really did feel like an illegal alien tourist in DC. . . #dctourism #gardens #creativeart #publicart #ghosttown #birdhouse #thingstododc #seenonmywalk (at National Mall) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_0VZ1QHb8Q/?igshid=12x8x8zxpo00z

The Lincoln Memorial and everyone hanging out on the steps with our 16th President of the U.S. 🇺🇸 Swipe ⬅️ for a peak inside at the statue of honest Abe 🎩, as well as his view of the famous reflecting pool....you know, the one that Jenny and Forrest Gump jumped in when they ran to each other 😜🤣#washingtondc #thedistrict #uscapitol #nationalmonuments #lincolnmemorial #reflectingpool #washingtonmonument #abrahamlincoln #civilwarhistory #ushistory #chillspot #blueskiesandsunshine #brilliantlybohemian #bossgirlbloggers #creativewanderers #daytrippin #dctourism #gypsysoul (at Lincoln Memorial)

Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Docents led by Mrs. Jacobs, church historian welcomed a tour from Empowerment Temple AME, our Second District connectional church family in the #BaltimoreConference. Metropolitan #AME is the oldest continuously operating black church in #DC. The AME Church is a black denomination founded in 1787 by Bishop #RichardAllen. The congregation was established in 1872 with the merger of Israel Bethel AME, founded in 1821, and Union Bethel AME created in 1838. The new #church was officially sanctioned by the #Baltimore Conference and given the name: Metropolitan.  National AME leaders mandated that the new #church should be located “in close proximity” to the #USCapitol and the #WhiteHouse. The circular Episcopacy Window features ordained bishops from 1787 through 1886. A replica of this window is featured in the #SlaveryToFreedom exhibit at #NMAAHC w historic pulpit & chairs. Because of its location, annual AME Conferences across the country were asked to donate funds for its completion. #Stainedglass windows were dedicated to each conference that donated funding. Construction of the present church edifice started in 1881 & was completed in 1886. Metropolitan continued its tradition of leadership into the post-Civil War period. Many noted individuals have addressed its congregation #IdaBWells and #BookerTWashington. The first #AfricanAmerican U.S. Senator to serve a full term, former Mississippi Senator #BlancheKelsoBruce, and poet #PaulLaurenceDunbar were members. On January 9, 1894, Frederick Douglass delivered his final speech before his death entitled “The Lessons of the Hour,” in which he admonished the United States to end racial prejudice. #POTUS #BarackObama & family worshiped here the morning of his January 20, 2013 swearing in ceremony for his second term.  It's fun to host AME tour groups because there's always #history, leadership, congregational & family level connections to discuss. Each time I volunteer, I learn something new. For this tour, I was assigned to the pews where #FrederickDouglass #CharlesHWesley & #GwenIfill sat in worship. #DCTourism #CulturalTourism #IAmAME #BlackExcellence #BlackHistory

Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, on almost 700 acres in Northeast Washington, is the only national park devoted to cultivated water-loving plants. This unique habitat, featuring exotic water lilies and lotus, is an oasis for nature lovers, a haven for walkers, hikers, photographers and birdwatchers.

Keep an open mind while you travel because just because you’re expecting one thing to be a certain way doesn’t mean it won’t turn out to be something different that you end up truly being enamored with. Also, roll with the punches when plans change. Adapt or you’ll cause yourself extra stress and not have a great experience. I went the the Museum of the Bible since there wasn’t a lot open and was pleasantly surprised. My sister and I agreed that you have to look for the things that interest you or that resonate with you because not everything in a museum will strike the same cords in your spirit that others do. So basically we found things that we liked and that is where the memories were made. #museums #art #artexhibition #beyondtheblooms #digitalmedia #technologyrocks #digitalartist #digitalartwork #artwork #dctourism #visitwashington #visitwashingtondc #solotraveler #solomaletravelers #makemories #travelstory #travelstories @museumofbible (at Museum of the Bible) https://www.instagram.com/p/CE162xEDy_7/?igshid=kxxhyxsn4mph

Heritage island and Kingman lake, in Northeast, DC is more or less the same distance away from the U.S. Capitol building as the Lincoln Memorial. Here, the Whitney Young bridge connects East Capitol Street across Kingman lake and the Anacostia river. This lake was envisioned in the 1906 McMillan Commission plan for recreation, fishing and boating, and was created by the Army Corps of Engineers by the early 1920’s. It flows in and out of the Anacostia River, features lily pads, flowering American lotus, and wild rice, and is considered one of the few wild places left in DC. A variety of redevelopment schemes have been proposed or planned here. These included plans to fill in the lake to build a regional airport in the mid 1920’s. Proposals in the 1930’s to build an outdoor theatre & ice rink. A trash landfill was proposed in the early 1960’s, followed by proposals to build an amusement theme park. In the 1990’s, DC and federal officials were open to paving the islands with parking lots for the nearby NFL football stadium, which will be demolished in 2023. Bald eagles hunted here until the mid 1940’s, and only recently returned, with a pair of eagles procreating eaglets last spring at the National Arboretum, about 1.5 miles to the north of this location. This location is no more ambitious of a walk than going from the Capitol building to the Lincoln Memorial, and within cycling distance. There is a metrorail station nearby, Stadium Armory station. And yes, we can take you here on a long pedicab tour along the Anacostia riverwalk trail, a paved multi-use pathway. Recently last spring, a male turkey or “Tom” was zealously patrolling this trail, perhaps to protect his nesting brood, but reports indicate he has moved on. #WashingtonDCtour #WashingtonDCtours #WashingtonDCtravel #WashingtonDCvacation #WashingtonDCbusinessTrip #dctours #dctour #DCtrip #WashingtonDCtrip #DCMetroTours#DCmetrosystem #DCMetrorail#washingtonDCpedicab #dcpedicab #wheelthepeople #dckidstour #dcstudenttour #FamilyTravel #DCtourism #AnacostiaRiver #AnacostiaWatershed #AnacostiaRiverwalkTrail #WildTurkey #Turkey #Turkeys #DCbiketrail #DCbikepath (at Kingman Island) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgWvujYLb4W/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Would you be surprised to know that D.C. has it’s very own castle? 🏰 Located right on the National Mall and used as the welcome center for the biggest museum in the world, the Smithsonian Castle has much to offer...including this charming and quiet little courtyard garden😍⛲️🌳For a look at the castle, keep swiping ⬅️ #washingtondc #thedistrict #uscapitol #districtofcolumbia #welcomecenter #smithsoniancastle #smithsonian #museums #dctourism #courtyard #castlegarden #fountains #quietspot #daytripping #wandering #brilliantlybohemian #gypsysoul #nationalmall (at Smithsonian)

Hot in DC?
Hot out? Stick to shade -- deep shade - try US Natl Arboretum's Fern Valley or Franciscan Monastery's grotto - see: DCgardens.com for more shade garden ideas.
