My favourite post-Conan KaiShin flavor to explore is the one where, although Shinichi has his body back, he keeps up with KID heists for the brainteaser excitement of it rather than an actual desire to catch KID.

Over time, the thief and his heists become the only constant in a world he doesn't recognise anymore (the journey changed him and any attempt to force his life back to what it was before Conan, eventually fails him).

And when KID stops appearing for one reason or another, Shinichi realizes just how much he was depending on the thief and springs into action to find him.

Regarding Ran’s (still unknown) birthday, I’ve always had 2 head canons with mental images and everything that I’m not talented enough to visualize or put into proper fan fiction words. So I decided to finally share those thoughts because maybe, just maybe, someone else has the talent to draw or write something inspired by them.

Number 1) Conan finally reveals himself to Ran somewhere around/on/after her birthday. How he’ll do it? The possibilities are endless. But it’s connected to Number 2) Shinichi surprises Ran on her birthday and takes her on a spontaneous date in the evening. They are a couple after all.

I know Ai won’t just give Conan the antidote, especially for something as trivial as a birthday, but let’s just imagine. Conan and co celebrate Ran’s birthday. It’s a great day but now it’s the evening/late afternoon. Conan comes up with an excuse to go to and stay at the professor’s where he takes the antidote. He’s already built up an immunity to the current formula and receives a time limit à la Cinderella from Ai but he’s too distracted to really care because he is going to see Ran again as Shinichi. Conan, now Shinichi, hurries back to Ran’s place. Maybe with a present, some flowers. He surprises Ran who is happy to see him (and of course a little bit upset). Kogoro is not happy to see Shinichi and to hear of his plans to take his daughter out on a date, but Ran takes care of it.

Ran and Shinichi have a great time, they go on a walk, watch the evening lights of the city, definitely do not encounter a random crime scene. They reach a moment where maybe, just maybe, they finally kiss. Maybe in a nice park by a fountain. And they are happy about it but also a little bit embarrassed. But not long after, the first symptoms hit Shinichi. He remembers Ai’s warning and his time limit. He tries to find an excuse to leave, one that wouldn’t hurt Ran’s feelings. It’s her birthday after all and they are on a date which he invited her to. A shorter antidote time means a shorter de-transformation time. Shinichi is running out of time and Ran (finally) says something to him about those reoccurring symptoms he always has whenever they meet.

The next part? Well, I don’t really know. Maybe he decides to shrink into Conan right then and there. Though, that would be kind of awkward if they’d just kissed. Maybe he convinces Ran to let him go and promises to explain himself very soon. Will he get in trouble for that promise and never receive an antidote ever again from Ai? Absolutely. But it was the only way to save himself from a load of embarrassment and the sight of an upset/angry girlfriend.

I think it’d be funny if, instead of post-antidote Shinichi and Ran having trouble and trust issues with secrets and angst and all that, with him not wanting to tell her about Conan or having issues after that, it’s just. Well.

He physically cannot keep a secret from her anymore. It just. Blurts out. Because he has spent over a year of his life keeping secrets and lying, two of the things he detests doing the most - especially to Ran - it is such a relief when he finally doesn’t need to keep such a huge secret anymore that he just spills and. Doesn’t stop. It’s such a burden lifted off of him and the thought of keeping secrets from her again just makes his skin crawl.

The first thing he does as soon as he’s completely cured and the BO is taken down is go over and confess everything, every heart wrenching moment of anxiety and paranoia, every thought process, every moment he almost spilled the beans, the moment he went from barely being held back from telling her to actively hiding, everything. And in the process everything else he couldn’t tell her but was holding onto for various people (now that there are no longer any covers that can be blown, well. No reason to keep them from her.)

He can keep it until the relative safety of his (her, their, whatever) house, and then it just. Pours out like a waterfall. Ran very quickly realizes she doesn’t have to worry about Shinichi keeping secrets from her anymore because if he so much as has to keep a spur-of-the-moment gift store keychain from her, he gets these puppy eyes and she can see him struggling to not just. Blab right then and there. He starts fighting, she can see him visibly catch himself as he looks like he’s about to cry. If someone asks him to keep something from her he might actually cry.

He can’t do it y’all. He just can’t.

In the middle of a case? Sure. He’ll keep things from the culprits. But soon as he’s done the police don’t have to worry about him writing a report, because they just need to have someone nearby with a tape recorder because he’s giving they play-by-play of every minute detail to Ran because she may not have realized what he was thinking at exactly minute 34.25 of the case. It gets to the point where Ran has a tape recorder at home and she has a designated three hours she calls “spill time” where Shinichi tells her every case detail and vague secret he’s kept (or thinks he’s kept from her) that day.

Shinichi getting ready to propose? Literally takes everyone involved and their mothers to get him to not just straight up text and ask her the second he makes up his mind to ask (luckily not when he’s in front of Ran), everyone is running a truly unbelievable amount of interference, and honestly, Ran figured it out half an hour in but he’s trying so hard to make it special, she’ll let him have it.

Everyone becomes resigned to the fact that if you tell Shinichi something, Ran will guaranteed know by the end of the night.

(Agasa ends up making them ultra durable and ultra encrypted phones and tiny, portable white noise generators because Shinichi was about to have a meltdown one time when Ran was out of down and he couldn’t blab to her, and that other time they were both out of town but could only find a shady hotel to crash in)

(Yeah, there’s still issues on both sides, such as Shinichi’s lingering PTSD and paranoia and her own coming to terms with the Conan situation, but Ran thinks he’s kinda cute like this and despite everything, it’s nice to know that he genuinely hated keeping all that from her, even if it hurt her.)

I really want to show a friend episodes of detective Conan where he doesn’t mention that he’s not a grade schooler and then randomly throw in one where he’s like “nah I’m an adult fr” and watch them freak out.
