My favourite post-Conan KaiShin flavor to explore is the one where, although Shinichi has his body back, he keeps up with KID heists for the brainteaser excitement of it rather than an actual desire to catch KID.

Over time, the thief and his heists become the only constant in a world he doesn't recognise anymore (the journey changed him and any attempt to force his life back to what it was before Conan, eventually fails him).

And when KID stops appearing for one reason or another, Shinichi realizes just how much he was depending on the thief and springs into action to find him.

I think it’d be funny if, instead of post-antidote Shinichi and Ran having trouble and trust issues with secrets and angst and all that, with him not wanting to tell her about Conan or having issues after that, it’s just. Well.

He physically cannot keep a secret from her anymore. It just. Blurts out. Because he has spent over a year of his life keeping secrets and lying, two of the things he detests doing the most - especially to Ran - it is such a relief when he finally doesn’t need to keep such a huge secret anymore that he just spills and. Doesn’t stop. It’s such a burden lifted off of him and the thought of keeping secrets from her again just makes his skin crawl.

The first thing he does as soon as he’s completely cured and the BO is taken down is go over and confess everything, every heart wrenching moment of anxiety and paranoia, every thought process, every moment he almost spilled the beans, the moment he went from barely being held back from telling her to actively hiding, everything. And in the process everything else he couldn’t tell her but was holding onto for various people (now that there are no longer any covers that can be blown, well. No reason to keep them from her.)

He can keep it until the relative safety of his (her, their, whatever) house, and then it just. Pours out like a waterfall. Ran very quickly realizes she doesn’t have to worry about Shinichi keeping secrets from her anymore because if he so much as has to keep a spur-of-the-moment gift store keychain from her, he gets these puppy eyes and she can see him struggling to not just. Blab right then and there. He starts fighting, she can see him visibly catch himself as he looks like he’s about to cry. If someone asks him to keep something from her he might actually cry.

He can’t do it y’all. He just can’t.

In the middle of a case? Sure. He’ll keep things from the culprits. But soon as he’s done the police don’t have to worry about him writing a report, because they just need to have someone nearby with a tape recorder because he’s giving they play-by-play of every minute detail to Ran because she may not have realized what he was thinking at exactly minute 34.25 of the case. It gets to the point where Ran has a tape recorder at home and she has a designated three hours she calls “spill time” where Shinichi tells her every case detail and vague secret he’s kept (or thinks he’s kept from her) that day.

Shinichi getting ready to propose? Literally takes everyone involved and their mothers to get him to not just straight up text and ask her the second he makes up his mind to ask (luckily not when he’s in front of Ran), everyone is running a truly unbelievable amount of interference, and honestly, Ran figured it out half an hour in but he’s trying so hard to make it special, she’ll let him have it.

Everyone becomes resigned to the fact that if you tell Shinichi something, Ran will guaranteed know by the end of the night.

(Agasa ends up making them ultra durable and ultra encrypted phones and tiny, portable white noise generators because Shinichi was about to have a meltdown one time when Ran was out of down and he couldn’t blab to her, and that other time they were both out of town but could only find a shady hotel to crash in)

(Yeah, there’s still issues on both sides, such as Shinichi’s lingering PTSD and paranoia and her own coming to terms with the Conan situation, but Ran thinks he’s kinda cute like this and despite everything, it’s nice to know that he genuinely hated keeping all that from her, even if it hurt her.)

Here's more evil henshin au that eventually will be drawn but typing it out(waring long text post yapping). The million bo!shinichi au but with a twist in the sense of heiji is a assassin/hitman(ik there's a difference idk which to pick) and both of them encounters eachother bc they get the same people to murder them. but shinichi is already there doing his job so he's altering the scene to make it impossible/unsolved crime scene ever and heiji appearing while shinichi is doing all of that both of them get in a discussion of heiji solving the "case" (is a 50/50 bc he gets them correct half of the time and the other times he just doesn't and shinichi just smirks) or other times heiji cutting a body part of evidence to show the client he has and shinichi going "💢great now I need to change the scene because it wouldn't make sense." They bicker a lot! Like they do eventually meet up aside from "work encounters" but is very funny like they just sense eachother in the streets and imitate eye contact like oh...

Funny enough they don't know eachother outside from their "jobs" including shinichi not knowing heiji actual name and only calling him silly nickname for the hell of it and heiji going 💢💢💢 in the annoying way and shinichi giving because he's such a "good natured and honest person" that he gives his name (the bo name lmao..idk which one so lmoa), in the paragraph above they do encounter eachother outside of their "jobs" which is funny because heiji takes notice and shinichi just feels he's being watched so they do make eye contact and is like ah...I should know this type of stare... vs I hope to go he doesn't recognize me. Which funny as hell bc shinichi does not recognize his face but does his voice, body build, etc bc photomemory ahh moment. The first time is just from a distance, the second time shinichi does like ah its him moment bc lmao...he did hear heiji talking with like kazuha bc they where hanging out moment!

How they get together is kinda funny because is all on kazuha to point out to heiji and he's like HAH?? no I'm not and then he thinks about it more and is like head in hands I am in love... insert the accidentally confessing to shinichi in one of the "job" encounters and they are at this point talking then silence and shinichi goes "well what you have in mind, being in silence is very unusual for you. You always have a commentary on this "case" hm?" And then heiji blurs out the "want to go out with me?" The nefarious blushing shinichi insert cute moment of what did you say looking at eachother very close almost whispering at eachother and heiji goes "that I love you and would you go out with me" "yes aside from the whole murdering part of our job nature, I would like to go out with you" :3 then blah blah dismantle the bo and both are free from the evil nature of murdering and killing.

More information on my take on a bo!shinichi. He's more developed in his detective skills like to the point he can make a murder scene to lead cold, etc. He is also somewhat of a apothecary more leaning on the poison bc why not...why make a insane fake case cover up when you can poison the target hell and back and also make it to lead up cold...(You can see the inspos imma take from other characters that I like and hit shinichi on to him bc omgies herlock sholmes and maomao my beloved...) also he fucks around with poisons may have a habit on yknow experimenting on himself sooo he has a high tolerance to poisons! But is fine he can medicated himself back huzza being a lowkey apothecary. how he got involved with the bo well smirks making vermouth/yukiko exes and that vermouth keeps keeps taps on her yknow waves hands around (following the campaign of yeagh the kudos ain't great as parents...) seeing how shinichi being alone in his big ass house while his parents knows where so one falls to the other and "adopts" ,more like wisking away, shinichi with her. Technically has a "normal" life until hitting his teens he's suspects vermouth in a dealing with something more dangerous more than meets the eye and one leads to the other and he gets wraps around the bo which vermouth legitimate hates it but shrugs maybe he's the key to blowup everything via the inside who knows! His only friend is Sherry and they tollarate eachother but they care for eachother yknow! Also hates everyone else in a sense...

Heiji whole thing I say is more of a "family" business that accidentally got wrapped into it and seems he cant get out but he's the best out the best yknow! Mostly goes as the "the tiger of the west" type beat and (have NOT thought about the design wise but my brain goes urgnmr mask...to hide identity prob idk..) Mostly uses yknow his sword lmao more of a "you really brought a sword to a gun fight" type of guy BUT HESS INSANE AT HIS JOB!!!! legitimate kills and doesn't even trace back to him smirks. Like not like shinichi who uses disguises and other things for his advantage but heiji goes as himself but more on the "random stranger on the road" yeah you got his hat (not backwards but forward facing lmao like when he scouts n stuff the vibe is like when kaito using his all dark clothes and a cap yknow same vibe here lmaoaoa) also he isn't detectiving a lot in this au because he's more chill back from it he solves cases here and there but it isn't his full focus yknowww that's why he likes shinichi murder "cases" he sets up when he kills the same target because is engaging and he solves half of the time smirks also suggests too and shinichi legitimate goes huh your right moment

(Episode 404, The Mysterious Angel's Mansion - pt. 2)

This little scene is probably one of my favorite DB interactions in the entire show -v- Everything from the way they got here— that is, Conan deliberately starting shit (and then throwing hands sksksk)— to the way they each react to the situation, to the eventual resolution and their implied state of their relationship with Conan...

To be fair, their dynamic is more than implied and we see it in action all the time, but rarely do we get to see anything apart from the reactionary, situational interactions necessitated by some external circumstance. Friends sometimes fight amongst themselves, kids even moreso, but the DB often get tangled in such dire, life-or-death situations that we usually don't get to evaluate the friendship beyond raw reactions to things like Genta nearly being shot, Mitsuhiko going missing, drivers taking off with Ayumi in the trunk, etc.

You could happily argue that this is just proof of strong relationships, because there's no time to premeditate anything and they're forced to be little balls of instinct-- and I would agree, but that's not the angle I'm taking with this scene.

Obviously, Conan is Team Mom, always spearheading the charge and guiding and looking after the others, but if the DB rarely hear Conan apologize for anything (as is the implication here), it fits right in with his character. He's a proud individual and having to even associate with children is, at least in the beginning of the series, embarrassing to him. Haibara even teases him a little afterwards with an observation that it's "tough" to motivate kids, possibly referring to the mental mountain he had to summit by admitting that he was wrong.

The only thing that could maybe make me like this scene more is if Conan's authenticity were less nebulous, but that same ambiguity is exactly what makes this scene appealing to me, too: reuniting the group by forcing a conflict to overcome despair and hopelessness and press onwards for the sake of someone else is, to Shinichi, probable justification to be both disingenuous or earnest about an apology, so I'm… well, I don't come away from this scene really knowing which one it is, and I... kind of love that. The series struggles with grey areas and I will absolutely take what I can get here

So does anyone think he meant it? Shinichi obviously cares about the children, so the natural answer is yes, but whether he's more or less honest about his apology has no bearing on the result— the kids stop fighting either way— so... at least in my head... there is no correct answer. It's left entirely to the viewer and just comes down to how you interpret his character: if he meant it, cool, the fact that he cares enough about the kids to put aside his pride for them is selfless and delightful; if he didn't, well... that's equally intriguing, isn't it? Maybe he's simply too proud to apologize and mean it, and the fight was just a means to an end (and nothing more) so that they could continue pursuing the solution to their dilemma... which could mean that Shinichi has an enduring problem prioritizing the mystery* over his peers (exactly the thing that got him into the Conan mess in the first place)...

This is a very short scene but goddamn if I don't enjoy the hell out of it. I love the kids and I wish they did more open-ended stuff with them like this (sobbing)

The insanity that is the Kudou Yuusaku's Detective Show case 😆

Like I'm not sure how to process that Vermouth managed to capture KID's mannerisms towards Conan almost perfectly (the fact the line "tsundere brat" came from Vermouth, while it was so on point for KID, is kinda hilarious) or Conan letting his guard down because he thought she was KID, therefore harmless to let her in the Kudou manor, when idk Haibara is staying next door.

Shinichi, I know you trust KID with a lot of things, but seriously... He isn't the only master in disguise you are acquainted with, please?! (the fact Vermouth learned these techniques from the first Kaitou KID a.k.a current KID's dad, and no one is any wiser about this is killing me) 😩

Honestly, when and where did Vermouth acquire the knowledge of how KID and Shinichi act with each other outside of the public eye in the first place? Was this the case of playing it by ear from how Shinichi acts in general when he isn't pretending to be a child? Did Vermouth figure out it was KID who appeared as Sherry to save Haibara back during the Mystery Train arc? I have so many questions 😵‍💫

(If KID wasn't a criminal in the eyes of the law though, he could start suing for libel with so many impostors of him appearing all the time LMAO 🤣)
