Super Saiyan Sillyness

There's a small plot point in DBS that is really important as to the direction the series is going, but if I acknowledge it; it would be extreme spoiler content. So instead; I'm going to talk about how Super Saiyan works.

In the DragonBall series Ki is a metaphysical concept that can be used to increase your own endurance and kinetic power, without increasing your mass.

Originally, this was a small thing used by characters to shoot out magical bursts like a firearm, without a weapon. Allowing a Martial Artists to develop ranged attacks without weaponry.

As we get to DBZ however; this Ki energy becomes a way to increase your physical strength and endurance. Initially by increasing your muscle mass, and later without the forced muscle expansion that causes body degradation and extreme exhaustion.

This culminates in the Battle of Goku vs Frieza, where along with his innate spaceman genetics; Goku figures out how to use this Ki, along with his anger to transform into a super Saiyan.

What this is, is a focused version of abilities before this, developed by Roshi and King Kai. King Kai's variant being the most recognizable; Kaio Ken.

Kaio Ken, however; like the bulking Ki causes extreme wear and tear on the body. And so the Super Saiyans rarely use it after learning how to become super Saiyan.

Now, SS isn't the only type of super transformation available to denizens of Akira Toriyama's world. Frieza species seems to be able to "Go Gold" as well. Which is a full body transformation.

Similar to Super Saiyan 4 in the DBGT series, which explored the vastness of space after turning Goku into a child.

Saiyans also have a kind of werewolf transformation during the full moon, where they can't control their emotions.

This however is shown to be destructive, and akin to the muscle expansion techniques as it increases Mass equivalent to the energy gained.

The Namekians have a similar transformation showcases by Lord Slug and Orange Piccolo, which has all the same drawbacks.

What this means; is because Saiyans and Namekians and Frezians share these similar transformations and Ki generation; that these techniques should be available to every race and species.

It's just that some cultures are more ingrained with wanting to learn how to fight gooder. Or are Frieza and just Tyrants.

Vegeta and Frieza show a disdain for species that they previously believed were "inferior races". Frieza towards all Saiyans, and Vegeta to his Half-blood nephew: Gohan. Who display a completely different form of Saiyan transformation that isn't SSJ2 but is similar in power level. Dubbed Mystic Saiyan due to its creation by the influence from Supreme Kai's Magic.

But here's where it's interesting to me. As we get to Super Saiyan God mode, which is what the *real* SS legend is based on, and the Saiyan race had become extremely weak in comparison to their former abilities before the Friezers turned them into a caste of warrior conquerer slaves. Meaning they had forgotten nearly all of their *real* combat techniques that they thought made them a "superior race."

But this Super Saiyan God mode, which then can be focused into what's known as Super Saiyan Blue; demonstrates the use of Ki and it's reflection on tbe visible light spectrum.

Ki can be used raw to empower a person, but because it's non focused it will cause the body to undergo a temporary extreme physical transformation.

This is alleviated somewhat with the Kaio-Ken technique which focuses the ki to a sharper point, and allows for an exponential increase in comparison to the regular Ki power up, but has the *same* draw backs at higher levels.

Then we get to a kind of Middle point. Frieza has several forms before Gold, but they seem to be more able to limit their physical transformation to use the power gain more effectively.

In fact; Friezas stay in their supposed final form after entering permanently, and then have more forms to go, and Unlike Uzaro Form and Super Namekian form, retain a standard small humanoid size.

And here's where it gets interesting; these different forms and techniques can be combined or used interchangeably to achieve the same or similar results .

In DB:GT; Super Saiyan 4 is achieved by entering Uzaro Form, Mastering it, Turning Super while in that form, and then supressing the Ki and physical transformation to bring the user back to typical humanoid size.

With their body showcasing red fur growth over their body.

This indicates that Super Uzaro, Namek, and Frieza all use a similar method in order to achieve levels that are past Super Saiyan 3 levels.

SS3 is a unique form, because while still being Super Saiyan, it amps up the physical form of the user. It still increases the physical mass. Not only appearing to lengthen the hair follicles (which is probably just run-off ki, as the user returns to normal after use)

But bulking up as with the previous forms drawbacks.

Which means that this Bulking is the habit that most life forms exhibit when they increase their key until they figure out how to shift better.

Basically, SS3 is the Roshi Technique combined with SS transformation. And SS2 focuses the energy of SS1 better, because it doesn't exhibit the bulking drawback.

This bulking drawback is visible when Vegeta and Trunks attain their own post Super Saiyan forms as well. Vegeta commenting; "You're still using that bulky form?" At one point indicating to Trunks that he is doing it wrong.

Their SS2 forms included the bulking drawback that Goku's didn't exhibit.

So when we get to SS:God form; this looks similar to Kaio Ken, with it's red glow. Indicated a compressed form of energy, that can then be compressed into Super Saiyan Blue.

Vegeta demonstrated this with his Super Saiyan Prince form. As his eyes sparkle along the colored light spectrum indicating the varying power levels not visible in the hair.

This is different but similar to the SS4 shown in GT. Instead of the Ki run off coming from the tops of their heads as in the gold super Saiyan forms, the red ki comes out of the hair follicles across their body and from their regrown Saiyan monkey tails.

This is a strange transformation as it looks like a form similar to Ultra Instinct combined with a red variant of super Saiyan.

More on this; Ultra Instinct looks like base form. Because there is no bulking, there is no visible Ki generation at the hair follicles. Just a black-light aura.

This is because the Ki is focused to a point where it is no longer emitting from the visible light spectrum.

The drawbacks with UI seem similar to Uzaro and Kaio Ken form however. As UI takes an extreme toll on the body, and nearly loses concious control. Any less control, and it's conceivable Goku could become a mindless destructive force like Uzaro or Brolly.

Brolly is a Super Saiyan who can't control his super Saiyan powers due to extreme neglect and trauma induced by the former Saiyan culture and lifestyle. Which indicates a connection between Super Saiyan Brolly, UI, and Uzaro. SS Brolly forms (also shared by Kefla from Uni6) also showcases a greenish aura.

Demonstrating that there are different ways that different people can utilize the SS transformation and these other techniques.

What this means is that Uni7 UI Goku has potentially become stronger than DB:GT(unnumbered uni) Goku. Because he doesn't have Color inconsistencies. SS4 Goku and Vegeta in comparison, while having black hair, emit the Red Ki from their body hair, and red from their eyes, similar to Vegeta's Super Princess. SSJ4 also includes slight bulking.

However, UI has that extreme Drawback where once you've used up your energy, that's it until you take a long rest.

UI also seems different from Super Forms as you can't harness your emotional state, as one is often shown doing when they initially enter that state.

And Uni6 Saiyans, with the exceot of Vegeta's protege, entering it at will without emotion.

Hinting that the emotional burst is good to learn how to control larger amounts of Ki, but not good at focusing it down to the single point required of UI.

The SS4 Saiyan's also have a "Limit Breaker" similar to that of entering SS:God Mode. which enables them to use their transformation at will, unlike before which required becoming Uzaro, loosing control, regaining control, become super Uzaro, and then sustaining that. And maintaining it longer than 5 minutes.

Which suggests the forms are not unique to the method of transformation.

With Videl standing in for an extra Saiyan (Despite being Preggers) this also suggests that you simply need multiple people whose combined energy exceeds a certain amount, and isn't generically limited to Saiyan's.

This correlates with the other [Super Transformations] shown in the series as a whole.

What they tend to forget, is that despite being Human, Videl is one of the strongest Humans on Earth. Rivaling only Krillin, who isn't as strong as Goku simply because he doesn't have a single mind focused on becoming stronger. Also, unlike Goku, who inherited land and money from King Yama, actually needs to work for a living.

Goku isn't the strongest because he's a Saiyan either. Even Vegeta believed for a while that Goku was a low-tier saiyan incapable of meeting, much less exceeding the power level of a prince like himself.

He's the strongest because he's Goku.

This brings me to the end of this with one final observation; Goku and Trunks in Uni7. Who become Super Saiyan at will naturally. Without training, without really knowing what it is.

They're not just expanded power level from epigenetics, they have expanded powers because of the same technique that gives Goku and Vegeta SS:God powers.

Because it's the same technique showcased by Korin, Kami, Guru, and the Kai's, in "unlocking a person's potential".

Just a weaker form since a single person would only be able emit so much energy. Achieving SS:God and SS4:LB and the [Ki Expansion] technique most therefore be the same, becoming stronger the more Ki you pump into the recipient.

Ergo; Trunks and Goten have high power levels because of... Well... All that energy and training happening during the Buu saga...

Dragon Ball Apocrypha

I liveblogged Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z in 2019.  Near the end, a few people asked if I was going to do GT or Super and I said no, mainly because I wanted to finish in one year, but also because I don’t consider those series to be part of the true DBZ canon.  Also, I tend to think of the other stuff to be small and insignificant.

Except, there’s a lot more of it now than there used to be.   It occurred to me one day that if I did cover all the other stuff, it would probably take me as long as it did to cover DB & DBZ.    But I never sat down and added it all up, so tonight I think I’ll just do that now.

Let me be clear: I’m not planning to liveblog any of this stuff.   I may do it sometime in the future, but I don’t want anyone taking this post as some sort of promise.  I’m just making a list.

And that’s all I know of right now.

Looking it over, I’d say enough time has passed that I could see me re-watching GT and Super and actually having something new to say about them someday.   I gotta say, though, there is not much here for me to look forward to, aside from checking boxes off a bucket list.   It’d be fun to see the smoking Korean Puar puppet, rewatching the Tournament of Power, uh, that scene where Goku holds Bee in his arms and gets his face licked.   Wow, I’m really reaching here... uh, Cell started showing up in Super DBH, so that’s probably neat?

But my original thought still stands.  You add all this up, and you have 305 episode/chapter thingies, and 12 movie/special thingies.  Not quite as big as Dragon Ball/DBZ but big enough to qualify as a franchise in itself.

Hypothetically speaking, if I actually went through all of this in a one-year span, I feel like a lot of it would just be me bitching and moaning about all the mistakes and missed opportunities in the material.    There’s some good stuff throughout, but it’s so diluted by the bad-to-meh stuff that I’m not sure it would be much fun to write or read.   The nice thing about 2019 was that anytime I complained about a bad episode I knew I had 20 or 30 awesome ones waiting for me later on.  There’s plenty of people on the internet complaining about Dragon Ball without me.   I’d need to find a way to keep it fresh.

Damselfrau interview: a peek behind the many masks of the London-based artist

if you somehow stumbled accidentally upon the work of Norwegian artist damselfrau, you’d be forgiven for thinking you had unearthed a cache of ancient vestments; something mystical, arcane—maybe even occult. defined by intricate beadwork, delicate lace and bold, bright color, damselfrau’s masks are at once visually arresting and bewitchingly unsettling. beautifully reshaping the face of the wearer, her work is laden with character, suggesting not just individual personalities, but whole narratives, histories, and worlds of their own.

the name ‘damselfrau’ is inherently contradictory. while ‘frau’ is a term used for married women, ‘damsel’ denotes one who is unmarried. combined, they form the paradoxical and provocative pseudonym adopted by artist magnhild kennedy—originally as a skype username, now as a professional alias—that she likes to interpret as ‘married to oneself’. it’s a fitting mantle for an artist who has become renowned for her masks; a craft that involves placing another ‘self’ on top of your own, creating both a combination of the two and suggesting something entirely new altogether.

originally from trondheim in norway, damselfrau moved to london in 2007. while both of her parents are artists, she herself never formally trained. rather, kennedy’s practice originated somewhere a little less conventional: the dance floors of london’s nightclubs. working at a vintage designer shop in islington at the time, kennedy drew inspiration from the collection of clothes around her and was able to sew her own pieces behind the counter, which she would then wear clubbing. eye-catching, eccentric and strangely seductive, it’s no wonder that mask quickly became her craft of choice.

since then, damselfrau has made pieces for artists like mø and beyoncé, and collaborated with alister mackie and louis vuitton. beads, glass, lace, textiles, paint, hair, paper: everything and anything can be included in one of damselfrau’s creations. rather than chaos however, the result is one of organic artistry. ‘for me the mask is a place where different elements come together as situation,’ she says in her artist’s statement. ‘the work is about this place-situation, more so than the mask as a theme or category of form. the mask is a place’. livened by the found nature of the materials that comprise them, damselfrau’s masks perfectly walk the line between being delicate artworks of visual poetry and ghostly uniforms for the mystical.

designboom spoke with the artist recently about her journey toward mask making, the best spots in london to find new materials, and her plans for the new year.

designboom: you come from a particularly artistic family. what was your own personal journey like as an artist in light of this? do you remember the first time you sat down and said, ‘right, I’m going to make a mask’? how did it turn out?

magnhild kennedy: I came to myself quite late. I’ve always made various types of stuff, but nothing good. I’ve known since I was a teen that I was going to have to head to london at some point, but it didn’t happen until I was in my late 20’s. I have no idea how masks became the format for me, I’m not particularly interested in masks as a category. I worked in a vintage design shop when I first moved here. looking at the old clothes, their details and decor gave me some insight into making. I went to car-boot sales every weekend to find utilities for our new life here, and started schlepping home all kinds of funny materials, textiles and bits I found there.

I had to do something with all these materials. it started with making masks for a party and the format stuck. from there it just grew slowly and organically. five years ago my husband robert started dalston pier studio. I got myself a proper work shop there and felt it was the time take it seriously. I felt like an imposter for the longest time. I’m self taught, I didn’t go to school past the age of 19. but growing up with two artist parents, it’s been schooling from day one

DB: you work a lot in found textiles and have spoken about picking up materials in car boot sales and the like. what is the strangest place you’ve ever found material for a mask, and when working on a new piece, do you have a go-to place in london to start looking for inspiration?

MK: I find things everywhere, I have picked fruit netting out of bins. one christmas in paris, they decorated the trees of the champs-élysées with plastic crystals. rouge ones had fallen off and been stepped into the dirt pavement and I scratched out pocket fulls. I’ve picked gold confetti off the floor at alternative miss world. friends bring me things from their travels too. a friend gave me a norwegian 1700’s hair wreath, a japanese friend gave me an antique geisha hair piece I crocheted into a mask. old tea towels. I’ll use whatever if it has personality.

just walking out the door is inspiration, really. I live in dalston. people from everywhere in the world, young and old. fashion kids. charity shops. I’ll go to sir john soane’s museum. the wallace collection. spitalfields on thursdays. dennis severs’ house. dover street market. a pub.

DB: how long does it usually take to finish a mask, and what is the longest you have ever worked on a single piece?

MK: anything from a day to forever! I have unfinished masks on my shelves that have been waiting for ‘something’ for months—years even. I’ll just have to wait until that right something comes along.

DB: I know you originally made masks for clubbing in london. how has creating masks specifically for a club environment and club culture in general influenced the work you make? do you still wear your masks clubbing?

MK: it’s been a loooong time since I went clubbing! I might make myself something fun for halloween if I am going to some party. the ‘craft something from nothing’ element of the club culture was inspiring. what some people could make out of some egg carton, tape and paint, you know? there was no hierarchy amongst the materials. that is the main thing I learned that I have brought with me into the work.

DB: how do you personally feel when wearing one of your creations, and what do you hope the experience is for an onlooker?

MK: I don’t wear the masks much once they are done. I try my best not to make to many decisions for the masks. people see what they see. it’s none of my business!

DB: you have collaborated with a lot of really interesting people in the past. are there any artists you are particularly influenced by, or anyone you would love to work with in future?

MK: when I was a kid I saw moebius’ and enki bilal’s comics, and they definitely still inform what I do. I’m very interested in homes and how people surround themselves. I decorate a lot. I sew my own christmas ornaments. at the moment I am taken with the book ‘dawnridge’, about tony duquette’s wonderfully OTT home. he was an artist, film and set designer in hollywood. I like miniature model makers like charles matton and thierry bosquet.

I like spaces over-informed by the people who use them and live in them. I have always felt I work mostly like a decorator. my all time greatest obsession is versailles. I don’t have a particular person in mind, so my dream collab would definitely be with versailles.

DB: you often talk about your masks having a character and life of their own. how much of yourself do you see in each piece you make, or do you always see it as a separate entity from the start? what stage in the process does a mask’s character start to reveal itself, and what does that moment feel like?

MK: separate entity I think…it’s a kind of meditative state, making these things. i’m always surprised by what comes out and that I have made something. usually the character changes several times along the way. there are very few conscious choices taken along the way, or at least it feels like it.

I try to think as little as possible, really and just go by instinct. no overthinking. I have clear physical reactions in the brain to if something works or not. like two ant antennae meeting, releasing some warm spark. some severe chemical reaction, it’s totally a high.

DB: you have a strong presence on instagram and images of your work are understandably popular on sites like instagram and tumblr. how integral to your process is social media, and how has it impacted the way you make work, if at all?

MK: it’s a big part of the work. a mask isn’t finished until I have taken a portrait of it and sent it out on general internet high-ways like my instagram or blogspot. this way the mask makes a life of its own and communicates its own being. it’s how it has turned into actual work.

DB: are you working on anything at the moment you’d like to share with us, and what does 2019 hold for damselfrau?

MK: yes! I’m very excited. I have been invited to exhibit at the national museum of decorative arts trondheim in norway this september. it’s the first time I’ll show the masks in the flesh in norway, so it’s pretty grand for me. I used to visit this museum as a kid, I have strong feeling for this building. it’s surreal to be showing there. I am also working on an interesting project with queen mary university and designer rachel freire, incorporating technical fabrics and movement sensors with my masks. that’s a new universe for me—very cool.

DB: any personal mottos or words of wisdom you try to live by?

MK: ‘walk, don’t run’, as my dad always says.

A small start to a short story, thats not finished yet, that will be one of my main characters going forward into a novel I've been concoking for a about 6 years but finally having a good starting point with this piece I'm writing. I know there will be grammar mistakes and such. I just want to know how the story is flowing and if it is intriguing enough to want to continue on. Hope you peels will enjoy it, cheers! I

               Room spinning in darkness, why is it so dark. Do I even have my eyes open?

Hearing dull, dampened shrills of pain and shrieks somewhat far away.

Ahh gods that noise, why do I hear this? Am I in a dream?

Feels something brush against her cheek. Feeling the same sensation on the top of the dome, sensory mechanisms are starting to wake up again. Why is there this tethered bag like a potato bag over my head. So hard to breath. What’s going on?

Struggling to let in small inhales of life and exhales out death. Why is it so hard to breath, and painful?

Lets in a deeper inhale and coughs hard, feeling warm liquid spout across the fabric ingulfing her head. What the… is that blood or saliva?

She inhales through the nostrils, worst mistake. A surge of pain runs throughout her sinus cavity into straight into the head. Let’s out shrilling scream of agony, nothing but small squeaks came out from the pain of breathing. Tears fall and she tries to stand but fails from her legs being bound to a chair.

WHAT IN THE FUCK IS GOING ON?! Anxiously, she began to fight with the ropes tying all limbs to what feels to be a chair, and starts to shiver, gaining back more of her sensory receptors feeling throughout her body.

            Something feels off why does chair feel cold and- Wait why am I wet? Her heartbeat skyrockets, then a loud low bass pitched sound slow begins to grow louder and louder till it hits a high enough range before she could barely hear it.  Wait… NO PLEASE NO FOR THE LOVE OF-, before she could finish her thought a force of heat radiates through her whole body sending the body spazing out of control and back trying to arc but can’t. Sparks viciously attacks the chair and her entire body. Then silence. Body grows numb again.

               Ugh where am… I, how long uuuugh, body starts to gain back the pain receptors through grunting softly, how long have a been in here? Wait I remember someone, no wait, others… what others are-. Memories start to slowly come back. Remember being with a group of other people. Family? No no no no, they were someone else, wait no something else. In in in a large corn field. Heartstarts to race again then hearing the low drum coming on again, NO NO stop! Breath in and out calmly come on. In unison the nerves cease, the beating of blood slows. Phew ok. So whatever I’m in, I can’t get too nervous… greeeeat like that’s going to be-. A loud bang goes off in the space. Frightening her, escalating her nerves and senses, lets out a few tears knowing what comes now. AAAAAAAAAAGH!

               She starts to cry again. Alone. Helpless. The unknown breaking her down mentally.

             Vibrations of a sound old iron screeching loud, grinding together echoes in the area, reverberating into her body. The feeling of footsteps stepping closer and closer. Something of an average size thing being sensed in the room. What is this… thing what does it want? Some vibrations like speaking muffled to an almost deaf sound hitting against her ear drums. Then a loud squelching, white noise sound bursts through the female’s head. Retching in pain and screaming aloud. Midway through the agony, sound begins to register through her ears. Someone’s breathing? The girl tries to talk but nothing. What is going on here?

               Chuckles vibrate through her whole skull. “How do you like our new little our toy, hmmmmm?

               Wait how can-

               “Hehe feeling uncomfortable about me being in here, hmmm?” Feeling nerves running wild through her pain receptors, feeling of tingling sensations but not by her control. Perception of tingling running through her face left to right, front and back. “So we are gonna play…. A fun little game. Would you like to cooperate and partake?”

               Do I really have a-

               “Nope, you really don’t in this situation. So shall we begin?”

               With a yelp in a cold sweat, breathing heavily, a young adult male sits up in a bed. Stares into space to catch his breath. Observes a moonlight uncovering little bit of the space with a cool chill in the night. Looking around the room intently, hoping this is reality. Staring carefully into the shadows, making sure the nothing is out of the ordinary. Turning around slowly, feeling like someone is watching him. Let us out a sigh and calms down, relieved nothing is there.

Still feeling little uneasy, pulling the covers away from his flesh to take a step out of bed. Standing up steadily, walks over to the closet. Starts combing through his large array of clothing wardrobe. T-Shirts, athletic ware, dress shirts, band names represented on black tees. He stops. Looking at a wonderous array of another type of clothes. Hesitates a second, looks over his shoulder. His gaze comes back to the clothes in front of him. Picks out a top from the selection, pulls out a drawer scanning to find the right- Ah hah! These ones! Selects a pair of undergarments, some socks, finds a pair of bottoms to match. A sense of joy overcomes the young man. As he changes into the new clothes, enjoyment springs throughout his whole body. Something about these products of cotton and silk design could feel so exhilarating, right, and confident. He stands up, maneuvers over to the mirror and stares with glee, as his own image. Hehe this feels so good. Heh I look good. Blushes, feels something he hasn’t felt in a long time, himself. Poses in the mirror to see over every inch of his body. Feeling his heartbeat speed, feeling something lengthening. Aye stop, stop! Geez I know I’m gorgeous but come on. Closes his eyes. Inhales in deep breathes with a steady exhale, fixating his mind in a blank abyss of space. In a matter of moments, the sensation ceases. He giggles while blushing feeling this amazing euphoric moment, wanting time to stand still. That moment being able to be himself. Not having to worry about judgement, or what others thought of him from just his appearance. The moment fades away with a smile disappearing. One of these days it’ll be different. Just hope that day will come sooner than later. A big sigh comes from his exhale, just wish people wouldn’t care how someone looks. Wish there were more like me.

A small rush of wind besieges the room with a faint voice. He turns around, as though hearing a call from the window. Freezes with a curious look, hello? He carefully walks over to the window. Peeking out the window he sees just a quiet, simple large town. The buildings nestled on a sloop running up toward him. Mixed variation of clouds gliding through the air, as ships of the heavens through a sea of stars. A moon quarter of the way full. He stares into the moon, hypnotized. Inhales deeply focusing his energy up into the soul of the moon. Interlocking his aura with the heavenly body, feeling the vibrations flowing through his body. A faucet unhinged wide open. Sensing the vibrations running through his blood, tissues, and muscle. A grand feeling of comfort and warmth. He could feel a pulling sensation of his negative emotion, exorcised from his mind. Huh I guess someone else agrees for once. He chuckles to himself awakening his thoughts letting go of the moon. Thank you. Gestures a slight bow.

Looks back at his bed, nods, and starts to unsheathe his body from the clothes. He carefully sets them back to where they were originally, a hard spot to look at from a first glance. As soon they’re hidden, climbs back into his cave of blankets. He slowly starts to slip back into a deep sleep. His mind falling into the depths of relaxation. Time and space ceasing to exist, free floating into unconsciousness.
