SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO “Daydream Believer” w/Davy Jones live in Japan—a country that was always a favorite place for The Monkees. They toured there in 1968 and 1989, then with Dolenz Jones Boyce & Hart in the 1970s, then Davy Jones (solo) went there in 1982-83, 1999, and 2010. Recordings were made of those appearances but, surprisingly, there is little audio documentation of Davy's 2010 concerts. The audio of this track is from the Tokyo Billboard 7/6/10 but the video is from a Florida concert in May 2010. CASH-GRAB QUICKIE GREATEST HITS, #3. Only curmudgeons wouldn’t like this imitation of what the sixties sounded like. Lots of gems and with the studio cats backing them up the Prefab Four sound great. Except on this cheapie off-brand album the mixes and mastering are all over the place. So some songs (Clarksville, Believer, Pleasant Valley) sound clear and great and some (a lot of the ones I don’t really know plus Daydream Believer) are sort of distorted. Look at all the famous songwriters who chipped in, though. And they’re ripping off *everybody* from The Who and Mamas and Papas to Kinks to Lovin’ Spoonful to obviously Beatles and mid-60s Stones. Everybody’s a source! It’s not copy-catting, it’s seeking multiple sources of inspiration! Then creating, uh, tributes! A lot has been written about Peter the Monkee and how his life intersected with pivotal people and events in popular culture—from the Greenwich Village folk scene to the San Francisco Summer of Love to the Monterey Pop Festival to the Laurel Canyon SoCal music scene. More can be said about his apparent and diverse talents as a composer (his Concerto is on bandcamp), curator of American roots music, and multi-instrumentalist skilled on French horn, bass, guitar, keyboards (he created the piano intro for “Daydream Believer”), and banjo—his contribution to George Harrison’s WONDERWALL soundtrack is just one of Peter’s notable banjo sessions. 

 

In The Monkees, Peter was cast as the smiling imp, like a Harpo Marx who spoke. Offstage, however, he was a pensive, book-smart guy concerned with the grand questions of philosophy and religion. I’m also indebted to Peter for his role in introducing me to my beloved fiance, Uma Robin, in 2013.

 

I started working in the Davy Jones/Monkees orbit in 1992. One day Peter was jamming in the den at Davy’s home in Pennsylvania. Someone said, “If you play the blues with Peter, you’ll be friends for life.” I grabbed an instrument and off we went. Fast forward to the blues-y soundchecks during the 2011 Monkees tour. On the road Peter gave me laundry tips and food advisements. During that tour we performed the HEAD film soundtrack. Here’s a clip of Peter’s song “Long Title: Do I Have to do This All Over Again?”—the fidelity is rough but it shows the multi-media staging. I joked to Peter, “This is a Quicksilver Messenger song you wrote, right?” HB PT—thank you for your light.

Childlike Behavior is a Key to Success

Douglas Vandergraph continues his journey of teaching others how to accomplish their dreams and goals by reminding them, " What’s the greatest gift that humans have?" Douglas believes it is our imagination. It’s a gift we use to go anywhere and do anything we want. We used this gift very well and without doubting its power until age four or five. We used it to build beautiful pictures in our minds of things we wanted to do and places we wanted to go. We even saw ourselves with special powers, such as flying or leaping to the roofs of buildings. But that all started to change soon after we went off to school. Then teachers and other well-meaning adults scolded us for using our imagination. They called it not paying attention or daydreaming. So, we stopped fantasizing. In this video, Douglas advocates for connecting to the child that still lives within us. He asks that you dance, sing, take risks, and live the life you want by using the original behaviors that, as a child, made the world an adventure with limitless possibilities. Douglas is putting himself out there as an example to others so they can see how anyone can take a chance, improve daily, and make a difference in the lives of others.
