Happy Day of Remembrance of the Chernobyl Tragedy, Ukraine and Belarus. It’s been 32 years since the No. 4 light water graphite moderated reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant melted down during a simulated station blackout power-failure test. Subsequently (and thus far), two initial deaths were recorded, 28 acute radiation sickness deaths of first responders and staff followed within the year, and 14 more in the next ten years from radiation-induced cancer. The aftereffects for the vast area infected by the nuclear precipitation probably will never be calculated, as childhood thyroid cancer deaths keep tallying up, even into the current decade. The cleanup of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station is projected to end in 2065--for now, the vast area surrounding the former site (some thousand square miles) is known as The Zone (the “Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant Zone of Alienation”), with The Sarcophagus (the steel and concrete structure built to enclose the No. 4 reactor building and its 200 tons of radioactive corium, 30 tons of highly contaminated dust, and 16 tons of uranium and plutonium) at its heart. Apt.
