In Daenerys's story, I do enjoy the simple choice he offers between surrender and comfort, and the uncertainty of independence and conquest. I appreciate all the bits and bobs of detail they packed on to this guy, and had a lot of fun with that resplendent blue robe.

I cried UGLY TEARS on my drive home from work. The only time I cried during the book. Ragnar talking about how he will build him a house next to his but don't come to the Veil too quickly because it will take him a while to build it. Telling his sister to live for more. Smiling even at the end.

Sevro and Darrow's fight was awesome. Sweet, even. Talking about how he can see the protectiveness in Darrow's eyes when he was looking at the refugees on Tinos. His head on Darrow's knee. Talking about Eo & Sevro talking about how all he wanted was to cause wrath in the wake of his father's murder. He questions his leadership abilities and doesn't want it. I understand because he was the one that was still looking for Darrow. Saved him from torment and torture. He came back different, broken and defeated. Sad. ANGRY. Then how quickly leadership fell back to Darrow when he was the one that worked during that year that the Rising wavered when everyone thought The Reaper had been killed.

one of my favorite parts of this book was The Reaper's speech. Because he wasn't Darrow, he was REAPER. He's also dramatic as fuck and I love him. He was standing up there in front of Refugees and I got GOOOOOOSIIESSS bitch when the people were like, reaching out to touch him, I was like THIS SHIT IS CRAZY. He has no branding and he's like

"I STAND BEFORE YOU A MAN UNBOUND" and people are gasping in shit cause he's like the first person in hundreds of years to bear no sigils of color.

"I speak now to Golds, to the Aureate who rule. I have walked your halls, broken your schools, eaten at your tables and suffered your gallows. You tried to kill me. You could not. I know your power. I could see why people wanted to follow him. That speech was fucking EPIC.

4.) Sevro. CRUCIAL to taking Aja down. That shit was 3 v 1 and they would NOT have won without him. Him low to the ground moving like an animal smirking like "YOURE GUNNA DIEEE TODAY BITCH" im like

Because Aja was such a THREAT bro. I was so NERVOUS someone was going to die and they almost did!

Finally, I was oddly, ODDLY uderstanding of why Mustand kept baby Pax a secret. For a split second I was like "WOAH WAIT WTF-" But then I was like ".....Yeah, no that makes sense." She understood what Darrow wanted but wasn't sure if the Rising would be like the genecide of Golds, her people. So she wasn't sure she couldt rust him. I get it. Nodding in understanding. Valid. She wanted to see if he was capable of BUILDING. She knows he can destroy. But can he follow up the revolution by actually building a better future.

I do know there is a massive time jump in the next book and multiple POVs. I'm nervous but ready.

Do you think show did wrong to Xaro character? They also changed his race.

I think the show did wrong by most of the Essosi cast, because they weren’t sure why they were written. Xaro is no exception. (His race was changed, and I know GRRM said he was white, but the Qartheen live in the far east and surrounded by people described as darker-skinned, so it makes sense to me to cast actors of color as Qartheen. It’s making him into a 1D villain to kill rather than the opportunistic sometime ally as he is in the books in addition to casting an African actor for him that I object to). In the books he’s no more evil than the other Qartheen, he actively distrusts the Undying, doesn’t care about becoming King of Qarth (not that the Qartheen ever has kings), it’s implied he’s uninterested in women (though I’m rolling my eyes that him not looking at Dàny’s breast indicates that. She’s 14 and he’s a lot older plus he’s from a culture where breast-baring is common), he apparently defends her from the Pureborn. Yes, he does want one of the dragons, but after she refuses his marriage proposal he just tells her to leave the city, not work with his perennial enemies the warlocks to steal one. Then in ADWD he and Dàny have a talk about slavery and while he’s clearly in the wrong viewing freedom as useless to slaves, he does expose how valuable her idea of freedom is, with the story of his penniless friend forced to dig a ditch and begging to be bought into slavery. There’s more to him than “violent warlord seeking to conquer and seduces a maid who is loyal to the end in the books in order to get dragons by force”; he and the evils he represents (the well spoken, wealthy elite merchant slavers) are a lot subtler. Ultimately I don’t think the show understood what GRRM was doing with the character (nor Doreah, Irri, or really any of Dány’s khalasar), and once again were prioritizing the spectacle over themes about morality and corruption.

Xaro Xhoan Daxos - Harris Reed Fall 2023

Xaro Xhoan Daxos is a merchant prince of Qarth. He is a member of the Thirteen, a prominent group of traders within the city.  Having seen her dragons, Xaro escorts Daenerys Targaryen to Qarth, where he offers her use of his palace during her stay. She thinks Xaro's palace makes Magister Illyrio's manse in Pentos look like a swineherd's hovel.

Xaro offers Daenerys his knowledge, telling her which members of the Pureborn to bribe, the ways of reaching the Pureborn, and who to go to next after she is rejected by them. Xaro also seeks to marry her, though Daenerys later learns he wishes to marry her so he can claim one of her dragons via a Qartheen marriage custom.

After the destruction of the House of the Undying, Xaro prevents the Thirteen from opposing Daenerys. Xaro offers to take her sailing around the Jade Sea. After his marriage offer is rejected, he tells Daenerys to leave the city.
