Hello,I read somewhere that there is version in Secrets of the Ottoman court, private lives of the Ottoman sultans and Inside the Sergalio by John Freely, based on English ambassador Thomas Roe that during the second reign of Mustafa I,Halime Sultan and Kara Davud Pasha had plotted to execute all the survivng sons of Ahmed I and to ensure the throne for the son of Kara Davud Pasa and his wife who was imperial sultana and daughter of Halime Sultan- Sultanzade Suleyman Bey as the only heir of Mustafa I. The chief of the white eunuchs with his men secretly had gone to strangle the princes, but they had been stoped entering by palace guards who had informed the janissaries and sipahis who were on the outer guard of the palace and investigation had begun,in which the white eunuch and his men were executed,Kara Davud Pasa had lost his position as grand vizier, while the main culprit Halime Sultan had escaped punishment as she was consider mother of the saint Sultan Mustafa. Do you maybe know more about it?
This is what John Freely says:
Davut Pasha had married the valide's daughter, Mustafa's sister, who subsequently bore him a son named Süleyman. According to Sir Thomas Roe, the valide and her son-in-law concocted a plot to have all of the surviving sons of Ahmet I murdered, so as to leave Davut's son Süleyman as the only living male in the Osmanlı line other than Sultan Mustafa, who had fathered no children and resisted all attempts to introduce concubines into his harem. Thus the valide's grandson would inherit the throne, or at least she and Davut Pasha so hoped. The valide's henchman, the chief white eunuch, led a group of his men into the Old Saray to kill the young princes, but they were stopped by the palace pages. The pages alerted the Janissaries and Sipahis on duty around the palace, who apprehended the would-be assassins and hanged the chief white eunuch in the Hippodrome as a public spectacle. The soldiers demanded justice, and as a result Davut Pasha was dismissed as grand vezir, though the valide escaped punishment because of her privileged position as the mother of Sultan Mustafa, whose madness led the populace to consider him a saint. Soon afterwards the Janissaries did away with Davut Pasha, strangling him in the same chamber of the Castle of the Seven Towers where, on his order, they had killed Osman. — J. Freely, Inside the Seraglio, 37%.
This is what Thomas Roe says:
(I have fixed some of the spelling)
On Satterday evening, the first of June following, the capiaga or maior domo of the seraglio, having received a secret order to remove the brethren of Osman from their lodgings, and in the night to strangle them; as he was performing his command, ayded with a fewe of the carnifices to carry away the princes, they cryed out; the pages running to the noise, and encouraged by the caslariaga, who had some suspition, without further examination kill the capiaga; now almost every order having risen against their own head, that night they sent secretly to the Janizaries and Spahees to enform them what the had done, and in the morning early hanged his body in the Hippodrome for a publique spectacle. The soldours retorned in fury to court in favour of the pages, and demanded justice against those who had consented to this wicked order, which had made an end of all the Ottoman race, only this Mustafa left alive, who is so holy a saint, that he will not people the world with sinners, nor endure any women about him. The innocent king protests he knows nothing of this purpose, and if his command were procured, it was gotten by subreption; and he is easily believed. But his mother, another Livia, and the new vizier Daout bassa, who had her daughter to wife, were vehemently suspected. It was a day of divan or councill, but these soldiours would suffer none, until they had an accompt of this treason. The vizier denyes all, the mother is a woman, and hidden in the house, yet it is very likely that both were guilty, to uphold and secure their owne authority, it beeing rumored, that the vizier determined to place subditiously, in the roome of the elder prince, his owne sonne, and very like him, and so to governe Mustafa for a tyme, and by his remove to establish himselfe and his race for ever. — The negotiations of Sir Thomas Roe, in his embassy to the Ottoman porte, from the year 1621 to 1628, p. 52.

~Halime Sultan~
Her exact date of birth is unknwon. Most historian agree that she was a woman of abkhazian origin. She gave birth to at least four childern to Sultan Mehmed III. Her first and last child have a age differnce of 15 years what suggest that she was clearly the favorite consort. After the death of princes Süleyman and Selim, sons of Handan Sultan, Halime's son Mahmud was the eldest living son. But Mehmed III never named him as his heir. In fact, he saw him as a threat because Mahmud was popular among soliders. Mahmud often spoke against his grandmother, Valide Safiye Sultan. Once, Halime wrote a letter to a seer and asked if her son would ascend the throne, the reply letter came and the seer wrote, that Mahmud would ascend the Throne within 6 months after unpleasant thing happend to Mehmed III. The reply letter unfortunately never reached Halime but her mother in law, Safiye. Mehmed III executed his son Mahmud and Halime was exiled to Old Palace. In fact, it was belived for centuries that Halime was executed along with her son. After Sultan Mehmed's death, Ahmed I ascended the throne. He didn't execute Halime's youngest son Mustafa and thus stopped the fratricide law. But he created cages , appartments where the survived princes lived without right of proper education and right of having harem. After Ahmed's death, Halime's son Mustafa acended the throne. But his reign didn't last long because after all this years spent in kafes, he suffered of mental problems. Mustafa was dethroned and locked up again and Ahmed's son, Osman ascended the Throne. Four years later, Osman was deposed and Mustafa ascended the throne again. Halime worked hard to built alliances and urged to appoint her son in law, Davut Pasha as grand Vezir. Halime and Davut ruled the Empire. Davut Pasha was found guilty of execution of Sultan Osman 2 and was executed in 1623. Halime wothout Davut's help couldn't rule the empire. She made a deal with Kösem Sultan, that Mustafa is going back to kafes and Kösem's son Murad would ascend the throne. Halime moved back to Old Palace. She lived there forgotten. It is unknown when she died but since she is buried in Mustafa's türbe in Hagia Sofia. This suggest that she died after Mustafa who died in 1639.

The Edirne agreement signed on 14 Raki ended the war with Balt Rhain, with Turkey as the winner of the war, plus Bosnia's willingness to pay jizyah (making it a vassal) strengthened the position of Stratocracy in its foreign geopolitics; on the other hand, Zaganos Pasha's position as the implementer of Buyuk Pasha's policy became stronger, with the loss of Halil's influence among the Divan, even Mahmud Pasha, who had now changed course to become a supporter of pro-Zaganos. Buyuk Pasha's power no longer meant anything except just a name. Then Zaganos prepared himself to immediately transition the government to the legitimate ruler, namely the Osman Ghazi family (Ottoman), to return to power in Constantinople. However, this effort was not easy, considering that Buyuk Pasha was still alive and the pro-parliamentary Pasha, who did not want the power of the sultanate to return to power in the name of "common prosperity.".
Halil's remaining faction is Kunduragi Davut Pasha (this is different from Koca Davut Pasha, born in Rhein Albania, who we will include later), Kalem Sabahettin, Mimar Zeki Pasha, Kazasker Gokhan Pasha, and Orman Yusuf Pasha. They are the most vocal in opposing Zaganos' autocracy. accusing Zaganos Pasha of being greedy and power-hungry. A heated debate among the divan broke out on the 1st of Kara Seker when Zaganos took a radical action that even openly abolished the stratocracy government, the position of buyuk pasha, and then formed a temporary government controlled by himself. Halil's faction strongly rejected Zaganos' proposal and questioned him, "You openly abolished the Stratocracy government in front of Buyuk Pasha like this; don't expect much from Buyuk Pasha to defend you this time. If so, you will monopolize the government alone by removing us. Zaganos Pasha refuted them by saying,
"The dogs of this land are nobler than all of you who betrayed the Padishah and expelled his family in Didymoteicho. You destroyed this country, the pride of its people, and your own religion. Who do you think brought you here?? Who brought Hagia Sophia for us? Rumelia, the Danube River, for your agriculture and trade? What kind of bastards throw away their country's leaders to rule them in the name of "together"??
Zaganos Pasha immediately left the Divan. Tursun Beg responded to the debate: "The stratocracy government has long been the gossip of many Muslim communities and even millet communities (infidel dhimmi), because it alienated the Osman family, a fact that they (the pashas of the Divan) would never want to hear; the people prefer the Osmanli family, who lead them. because the authority of the state is raised in the eyes of the enemies and defends them from the aggressors. The people do not want wealth in the form of material prosperity even though it is still important, but this is useless when the state cannot protect them. These complementary elements are what a stratocracy cannot do; only the Padishah family can do it. and Zaganos wants to destroy this practice by bringing the Padishah family back to the throne, even if he has to be banished from the world."
Things got even worse for Zaganos Pasha, just 13 days after the debate on the divan. his mentor, Timurtaşoğlu Oruç Pasha, died. Timurtaşoğlu Oruç Pasha was the founder of the Halil opposition faction, which was very important to him, despite the strong influence of his political opponents in the divan. Zaganos Pasha did not give up and immediately tried to take allegiance to Sultan Bayazid II from the people. but by continuing to hide his name from taking Bai'at. The plan was implemented during Friday prayers, the 21st, at the Muradiye Mosque in Edirne. Incidentally, Zaganos Pasha volunteered as a preacher. in his prayer at the end of the sermon:
"O Allah, bless this country and its people, lengthen the life of our Padishah, give him strength to defend this religion, sharpen his sword that makes the enemies of Islam afraid, do not make us humiliatedly defeated, forgive our sins that provoke anger towards You; only towards You we took cover and asked for help."
Tumblr media
Muradiye Mosque in Edirne
After the prayer, the people stood up in unrest and took Zaganos' hand, "Convey our Baiat to the Padishah." Then the people shouted Takbir. historian Ekrem responded, "The people already knew what Zaganos meant. Therefore they decided to declare loyalty to the Padishah (Ottoman family).
The incident in Edirne reached the ears of the divan, provoking the anger of Buyuk Pasha and the Halil Pasha faction. because the version of the news that reached them was different from the reality. that Zaganos collected Baiat from the Edirne community as the next Buyuk Pasha. The voice of the Divan agreed to label Zaganos as a rebel. then detained the pashas of his faction as house prisoners. one of them was Tughril Mahmud Pasha, who happened to be present in the divan at that time. Hearing this, Kyros (Mahmud's aide) immediately went to Edirne to tell Zaganos that his pasha faction was in danger, instead of panicking. Zaganos was willing to surrender himself to Buyuk Pasha.
On the 24th, Zaganos returned to the Divan, appearing before an angry Buyuk Pasha. When asked the reason behind his actions, Zaganos replied, "I collected the people's oaths of allegiance to the Padishah, not to myself, let alone to you. The one who has the right to be Sultan is the Padishah, as well as Sadr Azzam (prime minister and Pashak), according to the Padishah's word. You are just his disobedient lapdog." Zaganos was then imprisoned and exiled to Phoenicia. Mahmud Pasha was released on condition that he declare his loyalty to the stratocracy.
Tumblr media
Zaganos' actions, although seemingly stupid, actually awakened the partisans of the pro-Ottoman society that had long been dormant in Constantinople since the founding of the country. up to the Janissaries. only 2 hours after the exile order was issued and spread widely. The people took to the streets, emptying the markets and shops, shouting "Padishah is our Sultan" Sheikh al-Islam Molla Gurani also gave his criticism: Know, O Pashas, who built this country and brought you here; the time has come for you to hand over this country to them. You are nothing but their servants who also serve Allah. obey and fight to defend the religion of Allah behind their war banners. Allah has given them the power to defend their religion; do not rob them of their rights, which are not your rights.".
The Janissaries were the most affected by Zaganos' exile order. At the same time, they were the ones who opposed it the most; even the soldiers assigned to guard Zaganos turned against the divan's order and also swore their allegiance to the Padishah. As a result, Zaganos' exile plan was not carried out according to orders. Likewise, Mahmud Pasha, who was initially neutral and did not participate in the transition dispute, actually began to side with Zaganos and gave his allegiance. because of his dissatisfaction with the divan's attitude. This chaos reached its peak on the 27th, where layers of society, merchants, soldiers, and gate guards demonstrated, demanding the dismissal of Buyuk Pasha. The demonstration slowly began to subside entering the 8th of Hali, when members of the divan pasha were forced to obey the demonstrators, with the condition that the transition would be carried out after Buyuk Pasha died. Zaganos' exile order was revoked, and he was allowed to re-occupy the divan even though he received sarcasm from the Pasha faction of Halil.
Entering the end month of Hali, Buyuk Pasha fell ill, began to give up his claim as head of state, and finally agreed to Zaganos' transition plan. Buyuk Pasha chose Zaganos as acting head of government as Grand Vizier. Zaganos decided to postpone taking the official allegiance until Buyuk Pasha was confirmed dead, at least to prevent the irritation of Halil's faction from spreading negative rumors that he was trying to hasten Buyuk Pasha's death by taking the allegiance.
Cinili, the 3rd, before the Dzuhur prayer, Buyuk Pasha breathed his last. Along with his death, Zaganos Pasha ordered the conversion of Hagia Sophia back into a mosque, while also holding obligatory congregational prayers in it for the first time since the establishment of the Stratocracy. After gathering a large crowd and performing the Dzuhur prayer, then performing the funeral prayer outside the mosque field led directly by Molla Gurani (because Turkiye adheres to the Hanafi school of thought, which does not allow funeral prayers to be performed inside the mosque). After the prayer, Zaganos Pasha stood in the audience:
"إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ Buyuk Pasha today has faced his Lord's side. He has goodness, may Allah be pleased with him, and is not free from various mistakes, may Allah forgive him. O Allah, witness to your servant, Zaganos, and all his creatures, that I never wanted world power that was only temporary. However, world power is not still needed to defend your religion from the hatred of jealous infidels. You have given that power to them; you have blessed them with the best of leaders; you have blessed them through the words of his noble prophet in the conquest of Constantinople, erecting the flag of jihad, and overcoming the unjust and infidel rulers. Then I announce, in the name of Allah and his Messenger, I pledge allegiance to the Padishah, Fatih's son, Sultan Bayazid Han Hazretleri."
At the same time, Zaganos had sent a message to Didymoteicho, so that Sehzade Bayazid (Fatih's son), who was 86 years old, immediately went to Constantinople and took over the power of the country. while bringing the Sultan's family, consisting of concubines, wives, the harem, sons, and grandchildren of the Sultan.
In preparation for the transition, Zaganos Pasha ordered the reactivation of the Topkapi Palace, which had been built by Fatih Sultan Mehmed but was abandoned when the stratocracy came to power. moved the chairs, sofa, and sultan's throne there. This palace had really been abandoned for a long time, until it was neglected and unkempt. Zaganos Pasha went directly with palace employees to carry out the cleaning. brought back mats made of silk to decorate the palace so that it returned to its original splendor.

Topkapi palace Restoration
On the 19th, Sultan Bayazid arrived in Constantinople with a large convoy consisting of his son's family and his grandson. They received a rousing welcome from a large audience consisting of nobles, commoners, and rich merchants. The city's nobles and craftsmen spread out carpets and precious fabrics and poured gold and silver plates along the roads along which the sultan walked. Then the Janissaries came and continued the escort to the Ebu Ayyub Al Ansari mosque. The Sultan was awaited by the pashas and Shaykhul Islam, Molla Gurani, for the official coronation. Shaikhul Islam then tied Osman Ghazi's sword to his waist, according to Ottoman coronation tradition. Previously, his grandfather, Yildirim Beyazid, was the first sultan to be crowned in this way.

Then the second coronation, on the 22nd, was held at the Topkapi Palace, with the pashas each facing each other, kissing the sultan's ring, then kissing the robe under the sultan's feet. Bayazid II was officially crowned on the 22nd of Cinili, ending the Stratocracy rule that had been in power for 80 years. Starting from Bayazid II, the Ottoman Empire would be led by 30 sultans, wars, and peace treaties, dominating almost their entire reign. The return of the Ottomans restarted the offensive war and conquest, which had previously been interrupted in the stratocracy era.

funny as fuck how davut's reaction to being arrested and tortured to death is literally just "(っ¬__¬c)". man really has three files in his brain and they're titled "dilruba <3", "schemes for dilruba <3", and "committing atrocities for dilruba <3<3<3"

hey, hope you're fine. could you tell the names of the daughters of mehmet iii? i searched on wikipedia and only one name is given. it was dilruba sultan with halime sultan and married to kara davut pasha. i doubt a sultan's name was dilruba as it wasn't a dynastic name [probably because of mc:k]. i also wondered why many princesses', especially the ones who reached adulthood and also married, names aren't remembered? most sultans had lavish weddings, how could their names not be registered? thank you <3
I have made a post about them so I hope you will read it because I’m pretty proud of it haha
Yeah, Dilruba doesn’t exist. I mean, a princess did indeed marry Kara Davud Paşa but we don’t have her name so far.
Mehmed III’s reign is quite the mystery re. his family, maybe one day we’ll know more. Maybe there are documents we have overlooked-- like the one Tezcan found (I talk about it in the post linked above)
Another theory of mine is that Ahmed I named his eldest children after his siblings, so maybe one day I’ll make a post about it.

What would happen if an imperial princess married a pasha for love in secret like how Dilruba secretly married Kara Davut Pasha
Well, first of all she should have met this pasha before, no? Well, where could has she met him? Contrary to what MC/MC:K depicted, princesses and pashas never met each other in the hallways of Topkapi Palace.
Secondly, secret marriages are not valid accrding to Islamic law unless the bride and the groom provide 2 male witnesses each. So... not secret anymore lol
I don’t think an Imperial princess ever got married in secret. Towards the end of the empire, when men and women mingled more, princesses fought to receive the sultan’s approval to marry who they wanted.
