ya know what? If Davis is paying my bills while I can focus on my studies and life, screw it I'll do it, I'll date him. not that there is much of a choice. Heck, I'll eventually have enough stockholm syndrome and warm up to him and love him back probably...maybe.

Petting your head Davis smiles seeing you lean into his touch. Paying for your studies and forcing you to move in is paying off nicely. Seeing you having to depend on him was addicting. Plus having that audio of yours agreeing to his payment is good back up, if you ever tell anyone what happened he can just pay it. Saying how he paid for your ‘services’ and how you agreed in him being rough with you. And everyone would believe him with his reputation as the golden boy.

With a few quick words he could have the whole narrative in his favor, but as long as you’re good he won’t have to take apart your reputation. He’s honestly happy you’re just some random person it adds to your charm in his eyes. Plus makes things easier to control, but most importantly you’re genuine. Unlike most people closer to his class. Davis was happy to see all your emotions as long as it wasn’t rejection. Even your anger after he had taken you the first time, it is adorable to him. Seeing you all huffy and trying to fight him with your pitiful strength.

Though you being all cute and reluctantly snuggling into him was so worth everything. He smiles taking out his camera snapping pictures of you as you stare at your notebook. Hearing the noise you back up pouting.

“Aww come on gorgeous don’t be so embarrassed. You look like a doll all cuddled up to me.”

You turn your head away refusing to look at him. Davis chuckles and turns into his true form, he wasn’t much bigger in this form than his more human one. His true form was prefect mix of the cuteness of a chihuahua and the wildness of a wolf.

“Why not now?~”

You flinch seeing him like that now seeing as the last time you saw his true form was not the best..

“You’ll have to get use to eventually seeing as you’re mine. All mine. If you obey, I might just give you a treat.”

Taking a deep breath you gently pet his cheek, making him smile and lick your hand to tease you.

“Such a good pet, knows how to please.”

Pulling you close to him his heads litter your face and neck with kisses. Before nipping you to feel you jump a little under him. This was paradise.

Uno strano silenzio. Siamo soli nell'universo? (Paul Davies)

Election Results: 2324 All-Mars Parliamentary Elections

Elections for the Mars Union Parliament were conducted on 160/048, aka June 9 2324 (Gregorian), or 4 Cancer 459 (Darian). Elections were conducted using single transferable vote from 69 multi-member constituencies, with each constituency electing between three and nine MPs. All 349 seats were up for election.

Constituencies are drawn based on criteria of geographic contiguity, compactness, respect for preexisting administrative boundaries, and with the aim of creating five-member constituencies (with the total size of the parliament reflecting the cube root rule). Certain districts with overly large or overly small populations may elect more or less than five members; but districts may not elect less than three or more than nine members. Only minor adjustments in district boundaries were introduced since the previous election, and the size of the parliament was increased by 3 members to reflect population change.

Results

With a turnout of 28.9 million, or about 68%, the result was a victory for the center-left coalition led by the All-Mars Social Democratic Party, who renewed their coalition agreement with Martian Progressive Party and and the Tomorrow! party. General Secretary Liu hailed the election as "yet another vindication of milquetoast center-left reformism that excites nobody," though to what extent he was being sarcastic, no one observing could quite say.

The above map shows the planetwide constituencies used in the election. The non-shaded region is the Southern Highlands-Arcadia Planitia-Amazonis Planitia constituency, a "catch-all" constituency for regions of the planet that are otherwise too sparsely populated for reasonable constituency boundaries to be drawn. hey gamers. the dead man’s chest soundtrack has been rolling around my head a lot lately; the extended soundtrack from this playlist has been a godsend. specifically i want to gush about the instrumentation.

the potc soundtracks use a standard orchestra composition, focusing on strings and brass and less on woodwinds. DMC introduces the kraken and davy jones, who are associated with davy jones’ organ (of course) and — well. hans zimmer went nuts and recorded the orchestra, then piped that recording back over the music through a guitar amp. it sounds uncannily like an electric bass (and yes, a guitar now and then), so for our purposes i am going to say it sounds like electric bass with CRUNCHY reverb. it seems a little counterintuitive to associate ancient and cursed beings with more modern, experimental sounds, but altogether it creates this delightful, otherworldly, primordial rock band feel.

let’s take the track from when we first meet davy jones, dutchman arrival, for instance. it gives us a touch of that electric bass underneath jones’ theme when the sailors first show up, then pivots to normal orchestration as will is fighting. HE doesn’t know who they are, only that they’re odd — and when jones shows up finally, you get the bass holding that melody all on its own, this terrifying, growling refrain that sounds like it’s seething just under the surface. an undercurrent…a heartbeat, perhaps.

hold onto that thought. let’s move on. davy jones and his organ. jones having something as dramatic, expensive, and dominating as an organ on his ship speaks to how authoritative his character is — he’s playing his self-pitying music while his crew is breaking their backs to keep this awful ship sailing. he plays it solo, then the entire orchestra joins in, and beneath it all…the thrum of a heart. the melody of jones’ theme fits lock-and-key with the beat of a heart. here, everything is orchestral, but we’ve added the warm tones of choral voices under it all, like this is a horrible waltz that everyone aboard is doomed to keep dancing. and then it spirals into discordant chaos.

as a bonus: pipe organs have the countermelody playing with foot pedals, usually. imagine jones and his peg leg playing this kind of shit while the squid beard tickles the keys

i also L O V E the chorus humming in the back half of the whipping scene. it makes my skin crawl.

this all builds to the second kraken attack, the attack that introduces the viewer to the kraken in person. just…the constant buzz of the bass under these insane, warning low brass flourishes. the guitar-alike sound is in full force here and drapes this growly, eerie echo over the entire score. just when you hit the natural apex of the song, when you think you might reach some sort of musical resolution, it cuts out for a caesura — and bursts back in with the organ melody, huge and overwhelming over it all, as the kraken FULLY CRACKS A SHIP IN HALF. just in case you forgot who made this all happen. this is the EXACT way a heroic theme would triumphantly emerge in any classical piece of work. eat your heart out, holst.

the way jones’ theme is reprised with horns in the ship to ship score is so chilling too. it’s played in will's instrument after all! it's this teeny little bit of hope, a sign the pearl might get away — yet it’s getting lost in all the tenor voices just to really remind you how hopeless this all is. and then everything drops away and jones’ theme fully emerges in the low bass; it’s raunchy and nasty and so, so scary. god. what a score.

they do such a good job with the themes, even without visuals it’s so easy to tell who is on screen doing what in any of the tracks from the wheel of fortune section (specifically heart madness on the extended soundtrack). if there’s soaring brass and string stings, you know local romance heroes will and norrington are trying to kill each other on the wheel. if it’s quiet with a plucky little string soli, low reeds, and snare accents, you know jack is doing some shenanigans off to the side. if there’s deep and growling bass and organ swells, it’s elizabeth and pintel and ragetti racing against the crew of the dutchman for the heart.

in particular there’s this delightful bit in the track immediately preceding it, 3-way sword fight, where the melody starts and stops as all three dudes with swords are getting their footing on the various precarious places they take their fight. it builds and builds, and soon the melody is getting juggled by three different groups of instruments as elizabeth gets drawn into the fight too. talk about chaos.

on a related, but more lowkey character note: i ADORE that beckett’s associated instrument is the harpsichord. you only hear it a little bit in the track when will is bargaining with beckett. the harpsichord immediately puts you in the mind of aristocratic england; it was a household instrument back then, it’s plausibly an instrument beckett could play himself! it’s particular, but at the same time it’s subtle. it’s not dominating. he’s a new player in the game with a unique position, and damn does he know how to play the game.

and FINALLY. to compare beckett to someone ostentatious in a much different way: jack is associated with two themes, summed up perfectly in this track. this big, great, sweeping, seafaring melody we know and love, with regimented snare drum and timpani, the whole nine yards. it invokes jack’s reputation, the captain in his title…and then it fades to that stupid little soli, the gremlin trickster we all know and love.

yet compare that track with this demo of the same themes — it’s the exact same music, just with a solo piano, and it sounds so moody, even when the key and tempo pick up. THAT’S the power of instrumence baby! the texture, timbre, and context of any given melody changes the weight and impact, even if the notes are exactly the same. 

finally finally: i hope the timpani player finds a million dollars every day in the street.

Storia Di Musica #301 - Weather Report, Mysterious Traveller, 1974

I detrattori di Miles Davis hanno sempre puntato in particolare su un aspetto: non è mai stato un virtuoso del suo strumento, la tromba. Effettivamente l'osservazione ha senso, ma nel progetto musicale di Davis è irrilevante il virtuosismo esecutivo, dato che aveva sempre in mente ben più potenti rappresentazioni musicali. Ma perfino i suoi più acerrimi avversari non hanno mai potuto dire nulla sua sul carisma da band leader e sul suo fiuto di talent scout, capaci di mettere insieme gruppi di musicisti sulla carta perfino antitetici, ma che con lui non solo hanno dato il loro meglio, ma hanno persino continuato e ampliato le sue idee. Questo successe al pianista, tastierista e organista Joe Zawinul e al sassofonista Wayne Shorter. Il secondo è stato il pilastro del secondo grande quintetto davisiano (a cui dedicai il mese celebrativo della 250.ma Storia Di Musica), il primo fu uno degli innesti decisivi in quel piccolo arco di tempo che attraverso i già citati capolavori In A Silent Way e Bitches Brew porta al jazz fusion. Zawinul è il pi�� entusiasta della svolta, e anche quello più aperto alla sperimentazione, Shorter forte della sua esperienza è colui che lo asseconda ma lo tiene anche con un piede per terra. Il mix diviene perfetto quando si aggiunge il musicista cecoslovacco Miroslav Vitouš, virtuoso del contrabasso, formando il trio centrale di una nuova formazione che decidono di chiamare come qualcosa che la gente ricordi facilmente: Weather Report, il bollettino meteo.

Il primo album, omonimo Weather Report, è inciso nel marzo del 1971 in soli tre giorni. Con i tre ci sono il batterista Alphonse Mouzon e i percussionisti Barbara Burton e Don Alias entrambi agli inizi della carriera. Airto Moreira, che invece è l’unico a comparire nelle note di copertina, incide solo qualche intervento. Partono da dove era finita la lezione "elettrica" del Maestro Davis, ma spingendosi verso una spiritualità musicale, con atmosfere ancora più eteree e sfuggenti: la critica ne è rapita, tanto che la rivista Downbeat lo colloca al primo posto come album dell’anno. Il momento creativo è magico, e nello stesso anno pubblicano I Sing The Body Electric. L’album riprende il titolo da un racconto del 1969 dello scrittore Ray Bradbury che, a sua volta lo aveva preso da una composizione poetica di Walt Whitman del 1867. Nell’album compare per la prima volta il sintetizzatore di Zawinul che da qui in avanti caratterizzerà il musicista: Zawinul ne diventerà un pioniere, tanto che alcune grandi aziende produttrici se lo contenderanno sia come testimonial sia proprio come sperimentatore, e molte innovazioni tecniche di questi strumenti, e alcune derivazioni come i vocoder, devono molto all'opera del musicista nato in Austria. Le ultime tre tracce vengono registrate in Giappone durante una tournée del gruppo, e sono utilizzate anche per il terzo album Live in Tokyo dello stesso anno. Dom Um Romao alle percussioni e Eric Gravatt alla batteria subentrano nella sezione ritmica ai musicisti originari. Nel 1973 esce Sweetnighter, più orecchiabile dei lavori precedenti, che è apripista per il disco di oggi, che chiude in un certo senso il primo percorso della band.

Vitouš si chiama fuori, e parteciperà solo ad una traccia di Mysterious Traveller, che esce nel marzo del 1974, frutto di registrazioni del Novembre del '73 e di una giornata di perfezionamento poco prima dell'uscita del disco nel marzo 1974. Infatti è presente solo in un brano, la sua American Tango, musica che più si mantiene legata agli standard iniziali, e lascia il posto ad Alphonso Johnson, fenomeno del basso elettrico, che porta con sé tutta la forza della nuova musica nera; entra nel gruppo insieme al batterista Ishmael Wilburn, il quale prende il a sua volta il posto di Greg Errico, batterista nelle sessioni e nel tour di Sweetnighter, ma che declinò l'offerta di entrare in pianta stabile nel gruppo. Mysterious Traveller si apre con uno "scherzetto": gli oltre dieci, magici, minuti di Nubian Sundance, una sorta di rituale musicale magico con un celestiale coro scat singing, furono registrati in una surreale unica take di registrazione, e per valorizzarne l'effetto, fu fatta passare come un brano live, a cui aggiunsero applausi e brusii di pubblico in post produzione. Il disco mostra come ormai sia quasi del tutto naturale la contaminazione nelle strutture del jazz di sonorità funk, R&B, persino di musica etnica, che proprio in quegli anni stava avendo un notevole interesse di riscoperta. Cucumber Slusher è il funk del basso che accompagna gli assoli di Shorter e le terzine ai piatti di Wilburn e le percussioni etniche, in uno dei brani più famosi della compagnia. Mysterious Traveller è un brano sognante e armonioso, che sfuma nel duetto\scontro tra Zawinul e Shorter di Blackthorn Rose, vertiginosa scalata elettrica. Scarlet Woman, compassata e ritmica e l'intro quasi prog di Jungle Book (che sarà il punto di partenza per chiunque si accosterà alla materia per mille future divagazioni world e fusion) segnano un passaggio storico al pieno utilizzo degli strumenti elettronici nel jazz. Il risultato fu accolto con grande successo sia di pubblico, con il disco che va altissimo nelle classifiche di vendite jazz, e non sfuggì all'occhio attento dei lettori della rivista Downbeat, che lo decretarono disco dell'anno.

Zawinul continuerà ancora a registrare questo jazz-funk-rock fino al 1976, quando l'incontro con un altro genio, Jaco Pastorius, renderà ancora diverso, rinnovandone l'unicità, il suono meraviglioso e distintivo di una band che volle chiamarsi con un nome che tutti potevano facilmente ricordare.

Miles Dewey Davis III (26 Maggio 1926 – 28 Settembre 1991)

Compositore e trombettista statunitense jazz, considerato uno dei più influenti, innovativi ed originali musicisti del XX secolo.

Miles Davis fu e resta famoso sia come strumentista dalle sonorità inconfondibilmente languide e melodiche, sia per il suo atteggiamento innovatore (peraltro mai esente da critiche), sia per la sua figura di personaggio pubblico. Fu il suo un caso abbastanza raro in campo jazzistico: fu infatti uno dei pochi jazzmen in grado di realizzare anche commercialmente il proprio potenziale artistico e forse l'ultimo ad avere anche un profilo di star dell'industria musicale. Una conferma della sua poliedrica personalità artistica fu la sua (postuma) ammissione, nel marzo 2006, alla Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; un ulteriore riconoscimento di un talento che influenzò tutti i generi di musica popolare della seconda metà del XX secolo.

Sono trascorsi 33 anni, ormai, dalla sua scomparsa a soli 65.

Osannato e condannato dalla critica, è palese il contributo che Miles ha dato alla musica.

Durante la sua intensa carriera ha attraversato innumerevoli stili e generi, reinventandosi e rimettendosi continuamente in gioco per non essere sopraffatto dallo scorrere delle mode, dai gusti e dai nuovi idoli del pubblico.

Davis was born to a beastkin mother and a werewolf father, a perfect mix of the two. Short like his chihuahua mother but the strength of his father even more so as a three headed one. Mix or not Davis was seen as royalty by many of his peers due to his three head status plus the fact his family was wealthily didn’t hurt. So he was treated as a prince by those around him. Thus he played the part of a noble sweet one to a tee.

Many fell for him due to his cute height, his strong build, charming smile, and his confidence. He got the college staff’s love especially when he saved an important game for his college football team in his first year. Now he was the star of the football team in his third year. And in general he was the prince of the whole school and people loved him. One day though Davis asked you if you wouldn’t mind tutoring him with his algebra class seeing as you two shared it. He said he’d even pay you and well you were in no position to turn him down even if you weren’t the best in said class.

“Thank you so much! It feels funny being a criminal justice major and struggling with algebra.”

He lets out a hearty chuckle as you two walk to his very nice apartment just outside the campus. Setting down and getting everything ready he placed his phone on the table, and took out some cash.

“Here’s the money for your services my dear. Will this be enough?”

“Oh thanks, and yep this is more than enough. You ready to start?”

The man nods his tail wagging, as he taps his phone.

“Oops I accidentally started recording when I placed down my phone. It got a bit of our conversation, my apologies.”

“Oh that’s fine it wasn’t like anything important was said.”

“Yeppers anyways! Let’s study away.”

After a little bit Davis scoot closer to you he honestly wasn’t listening to what you were trying to teach him. He snuggled his head right into your shoulder.

“You have such a lovely voice.”

“Oh uh thanks? Can you scoot over a bit?”

“Maybe, could I confess something first?”

“Sure I guess.”

“You see I only really asked you to come cause I wanted you alone. I wanted to confess that I really like you. We’ve been in the same math classes for years and well for lack of better words you’ve bewitched me. So would you be mine?”

You were honestly shocked that this was happening. This couldn’t be real, this had to be some sort of joke. He was a rich popular man and you’re just a normal person this wasn’t something that should happen.

“I uhh you serious?”

“Yes I’m serious. I know it’s weird thinking about it since we’re from two different backgrounds, but that doesn’t mean I can’t love someone like you.”

“I just don’t think it’s a good idea. Right now I’m trying to focus on classes and balancing out my life in general. I don’t have time to be in a relationship sadly when I’m still figuring myself out.”

“You figure yourself out while still being with me.”

“No, that wouldn’t be fair to either of us.”

“So you think it’s fair you say no to me. That it’s fair to deny your rightful place.”

Davis huffed and grabbed onto your arm tightly making you flinch.

“Davis please you’re hurting me.”

“Shut up. If you’re going to play hard to get then I’ll show you up. I don’t lose.”

“This isn’t a game, please you’re scaring me.”

“Like I care if it is or isn’t, I’ve decided you’re mine you got no say in the matter. I’ll make it feel good I promise.”

He shoves you roughly to the ground and forces your bottoms off. You try to shove him away, but his claws quickly found their way around your neck.

“Go on, fight me. Struggle in my hand. You’ll only excite me more.”

Licking your neck to your lips before making his way to your eyes licking all your tears. You could hear his tail thumping against the ground excitedly. He slowly transforms into his other form. His three werewolf heads appearing, using the two on the side he grabbed onto your arms holding them still. You just hoped it would be over soon.

“I’m doing this because I love you. This is for your own good you don’t know any better.”

He kisses your cheek lovingly with his middle head.

“So struggle, struggle for me baby. While I fuck all those bad thoughts away.”

Eden Flores: she's the first image, she's the inheritor of the Filii Terrae, who have the earth related powers in this world. She's very weak in terms of power, very emotionally repressed, and i'd say she deserves a hug but I think it would make her break down sobbing to be touched

Davi Ventas: he's actually the second son of the leader of the Filii Caeli, but his older brother unfortunately died, so he's the one that has to go to the Assembly (where all of these characters meet) he has wings because the Filli Caeli were given those as a gift from the sun. they're the sun's favorite, despite there being. a people named after the sun.

Ester Ferro: Her people die at age twenty eight. She is currently twenty. Instead of worrying about the future she's very concerned with the past, as she's been given the title of Royal Historian, which is traditionally the Filii Siderum's role.

Bastien Alvarado: Albino boy who loves the finer things in life. I like to call him a glass battle axe. He's very delicate. But oh he will be ready to punch someone. Or at least have someone else punch them. He's from the Filii Noctis, which means that if he is a place with below a certain level of light, he will. fucking die. fun!

Marina Glacies: Her people live in the northern most point of the accessible world, and she's going to inherit the traditional role of leadership, but at only twenty-two she's not quite ready for that yet. She's part of the Filii Maris.

Finally;

Oren Reyes: the king of Sundrop, by rights of his father falling in a hole and dying quite recently. He's part of the Filii Solis, the counterpart to the Filii Noctis. Oren has chronic fatigue and pain due to a condition that is both genetic and magical in origin, because of the curses that are laid over everyone and the island of Sundrop.

"dai stupidamente il tuo cuore agli altri e ti aspetti che gli altri facciano lo stesso" magari e giusto .. Se è ciò che sentivi di fare... va bene così,

bisogna solo imparare ad equilibrarsi a non superare la linea che potrebbe far crollare te stesso per gli'altri.

Facciomo un esempio a chiunque stia leggendo: tu ti fidanzi, inizi una relazione, c'è una buona probabilità che vada bene, magari le cose funzionano per davvero e finalmente trovi la felicità.... ma se l'altra persona un giorno non ci fosse più? Se finisse? se in realta dall'altra parte ci fosse solo interesse?

Bhe in quel caso tu starai male, sentirai tutto amplificato, tutto crollerà, e ti sentirai sotto querlle macerie...

E allora poi ti guardi allo specchio e comprendi e ti chiedi, c'è qualcosa che non va? Alla fine dici al tuo cervello di non nascondere la tua più grande paura

Non nasconderla con "no ma io sono apatica, non provo nulla"

perché infondo sai che non è la verità

Is blogging still relevant in the age of Tik Tok and Instagram?

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BLOGS AND SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS

To start off this post, I feel it is relevant to first explain the main difference between blogs like Tumblr and social media platforms like Tik Tok and Instagram. Blogs are mediums where an individual or association will post detailed written content in their field of expertise (Walker Rettberg 2013). On the other hand, social media platforms focus on creating short and visually-pleasing content to attract people’s attention (Davis 2016). Therefore, I conclude that blogging is still relevant as people rely on blogs to receive in-depth knowledge and analysis on specific topics while social media platforms cater to creating interest and providing general knowledge in a specific topic.

BLOG FORMAT

One key strength of Tumblr is its ability to allow content creators to share their deep understanding in fields of their expertise. The reason for this is that Tumblr does not have a word limit on their posts unlike other social media platforms (Rahmanita et al. 2018). This then allows content creators to blog detailed information and analysis on their chosen topic, along with providing sources and evidence to back up their stance. According to Davis (2016), Jason Kottke is one such blogger who is a web designer and he shares his insights on cultural sides of web development, design and new technology; sometimes including a personal story on it as well. Readers in turn would have a better grasp and understanding of the topic as the blog provides comprehensive information.

BLOG CREDIBILITY

Furthermore, blogs tend to have higher credibility when compared to social media platforms like Tik Tok. During the Covid-19 pandemic, there were multiple videos on Tik Tok spreading misinformation that Bill Gates, the former CEO of Microsoft had a hand in causing the virus outbreak (Chmielewski 2020). This caused major confusion in a time of hardship and unrest. However, credible blogs were able to help mediate the confusion and instead provide accurate information to the people. One such blog is Banner Health where health tips and expert advice was given. One such example was an article writing about the symptoms of long Covid and its effects on humans (Olsson 2022). Blogs like this were crucial during the period of rampant misinformation on Covid-19 because they helped to contribute accurate information that was backed by research and cited sources to the people. By doing this, bloggers were able to become reliable voices on the Covid-19 topic and create a safe space for people to learn more about the virus, in turn allowing them to better protect themselves.

BLOG AS A COMPLIMENTARY TOOL

Besides that, blogs can work as a complementary tool to social media platforms like Tik Tok and Instagram. Content creators typically use multiple different platforms in order to reach a wider and more diverse audience. Similarly, bloggers could use social media platforms like Tik Tok to promote their blog content and in turn draw in more people to their main site of content creation. The reason this is a plausible model is because social media platforms tend to reach wider audiences when compared to blogs that specify in certain target audiences (ONPASSIVE 2023). Brian Solis is one such blogger who follows this example. On his blog, Solis himself has written many articles on disruptive technology, one of them touching on how companies can use the metaverse, a new web to their advantage (Solis 2022). Solis also further uses Instagram to share snippets of his thoughts on the topic, allowing him to grab people’s attention and bringing more people to his blog is they are interested in the topic.

MONETIZATION OF BLOGS

Blogs also have the potential to become monetization platforms, sometimes being more effective than social media platforms. One reason is that blogs have more options on ways to become monetized. Some of the many methods are brand sponsorship, affiliate marketing, showing advertisements and email marketing. Brand sponsorships involve brands paying bloggers to share their opinions and reviews on the brand products (Saeed 2023). They can be especially effective if both the brand and blog share similar interests as they target the same audience. According to Saeed (2023), affiliate marketing differs as it works on a commission basis where the blogger receives money when an audience member buys a brand product through the blogger’s special link or code. Saeed (2023) also mentions that blogs may show advertisements that are related to the blog’s content and revenue can be generated through ad clicks. Moreover, Saeed also states that email marketing can be another great way to communicate with the audience and bring them back to the blog (2023).

To conclude, although social media platforms are quickly becoming the more popular option to audiences, blogs still have their unique strengths that allows them to remain relevant in this current age.

Sarah Vaughan è stata una vera leggenda del jazz, cantante e pianista, ha inciso oltre cinquanta dischi.

Quattro volte vincitrice dei Grammy Award, incluso un Lifetime Achievement Award, nel 1989 il National Endowment for the Arts, le ha conferito il NEA Jazz Masters Award, la più alta onorificenza statunitense del genere jazz.

Nacque a Newark il 27 marzo 1924 in una famiglia di umili origini che amava la musica, sua madre cantava nel coro della chiesa e suo padre suonava la chitarra e il pianoforte che lei iniziò a studiare a soli tre anni. Da bambina si esibiva come organista e solista del coro di una chiesa battista. A quindici anni lasciò la scuola per dedicarsi completamente alla musica.

A diciotto anni vinse un concorso canoro al mitico Apollo Theater di Harlem che le consentì di aprire il concerto di Ella Fitzgerald dove fu notata dal cantante Billy Eckstine che la fece entrare nell’orchestra diretta da Earl Hines.

La sua carriera da solista è iniziata nel 1945.

Ha inciso dischi con i più grandi musicisti e compositori di tutti i tempi come Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis e sfornato un successo dopo l’altro. Molte sono le sue canzoni rimaste nella storia della musica di tutti i tempi.

Aveva una profonda carica interpretativa e la capacità di controllare ogni dettaglio, dall’intensità del vibrato e del volume, all’articolazione delle sillabe. Una parte della critica la giudicava troppo manierata, accusandola di crogiolarsi troppo nei virtuosismi, ma lei riusciva sempre a stupire il suo pubblico, trasmettendo il suo enorme potenziale attraverso ogni tipo di repertorio.

In bilico tra la passione e le esigenze del mercato, Sarah Vaughan ostentava una forte personalità ma in realtà era fragile, insicura e dipendente da fumo e droghe. Sboccata e impertinente i colleghi le avevano appioppato vari soprannomi come Sailor e Sassy, il pubblico, invece, la chiamava La Divina.

Una profonda amicizia l’ha legata al suo mentore Billy Eckstine, con il quale ha realizzato storici duetti e che chiamava padre e anche my blood (il mio sangue). Erano talmente uniti che, alla notizia della sua morte, l’uomo subì un colpo apoplettico.

Nella sua travagliata e sofferta vita sentimentale si è sposata per ben quattro volte. Il primo è stato il trombettista George Treadwell che divenne anche il suo manager e ne decise il look, capelli, abiti e addirittura le fece cambiare la dentatura. Il secondo è stato il giocatore di football Clyde Atkins con cui, nel 1961 adottò una bambina, Debra Lois, attrice cinematografica nota col nome d’arte Paris Vaughan. Il loro matrimonio fu breve perché lui era un violento. Ha sposato poi Marshall Fisher, ristoratore di Las Vegas e ancora il trombettista Waymon Reed.

Sarah Vaughan è morta a Hidden Hills, il 3 aprile 1990, aveva sessantasei anni.

L’anno successivo la musicista Carmen McRae l’ha omaggiata col disco Dedicated to Sarah, in cui ha interpretato i suoi maggiori successi. Sempre nel 1991 si è tenuto un tributo alla Carnegie Hall che ha visto l’esibizione di importanti musicisti e musiciste.

Dal 1998 è presente nella Hall of Fame con due dischi, l’album Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown del 1954 e il singolo If You Could See Me Now del 1946.

Nel 2003 Berkeley e San Francisco hanno proclamato il 27 marzo, sua data di nascita, il Sarah Lois Vaughan Day.

Nel 2016 le è stata dedicata la versione 4.7 della piattaforma WordPress.
