The True Love
There is a faith in loving fiercely the one who is rightfully yours, especially if you have waited years and especially if part of you never believed you could deserve this loved and beckoning hand held out to you this way.
I am thinking of faith now and the testaments of loneliness and what we feel we are worthy of in this world.
Years ago in the Hebrides, I remember an old man who walked every morning on the grey stones to the shore of baying seals, who would press his hat to his chest in the blustering salt wind and say his prayer to the turbulent Jesus hidden in the water,
and I think of the story of the storm and everyone waking and seeing the distant yet familiar figure far across the water calling to them
and how we are all preparing for that abrupt waking, and that calling, and that moment we have to say yes, except it will not come so grandly so Biblically but more subtly and intimately in the face of the one you know you have to love
so that when we finally step out of the boat toward them, we find everything holds us, and everything confirms our courage, and if you wanted to drown you could, but you don’t because finally after all this struggle and all these years you simply don’t want to any more you’ve simply had enough of drowning and you want to live and you want to love and you will walk across any territory and any darkness however fluid and however dangerous to take the one hand you know belongs in yours. by David Whyte

I have been thinking about these words from the poet and philosopher David Whyte quite a fair measure lately. They recall the story of Socrates from Plato’s Apologia in which Socrates is told he is the wisest person in the world. He responds that he thinks that’s an absurd statement; he KNOWS that he knows nothing. At the end of the story, after consulting many self-proclaimed “wisest” souls, he discovers that he is, indeed, the wisest person, precisely because he knows his ignorance of the genuinely vast and immeasurable scale of the universe, known and unknown. I’ve been on a journey focused much on “not knowing” lately. And being at peace with “not knowing.” It’s somewhat like a leafless tree enduring cold winter winds. It’s present in the harshness of the season, lacking leaves or bloom, not sure if it will survive another turn of the wheel of seasons. Yet, if it endures winter, its spring will come once again. It needs the winter to rest, to be quiet—so that it rejuvenates its life force for when the spring again does arrive. Then it begins the cycle anew… stronger, more resilient, and with more wisdom-knowledge that help it, perhaps, both endure and thrive. #Repost @davidjwhyte ・・・ Quote by @davidjwhyte Photo by @sattvaphoto --- #poet #poetry #davidwhyte https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp4ZB7wOz652OafGO8JEeFe1R36vYBiX_8MttA0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

loneliness is a kind of inverse measure of what you actually belong to. it actually tells you where to go.

The only choice we have as we mature is how we inhabit our vulnerability, how we become larger and more courageous and more compassionate through our intimacy with disappearance, our choice is to inhabit vulnerability as generous citizens of loss, robustly and fully, or conversely, as misers and complainers, reluctant and fearful, always at the gates of existence, but never bravely and completely attempting to enter, never wanting to risk ourselves, never walking fully through the door #DavidWhyte #sculpture #innerpeace #vulnerability #ritualsthatfeellikehome #clay #terracotta #madrid #goodforthesoul

Sometimes
Sometimes if you move carefully through the forest
breathing like the ones in the old stories
who could cross a shimmering bed of dry leaves without a sound,
you come to a place whose only task
is to trouble you with tiny but frightening requests
conceived out of nowhere but in this place beginning to lead everywhere.
Requests to stop what you are doing right now, and
to stop what you are becoming while you do it,
questions that can make or unmake a life,
questions that have patiently waited for you,
questions that have no right to go away.

“Your great mistake is to act the drama as if you were alone. As if life were a progressive and cunning crime with no witness to the tiny hidden transgressions. To feel abandoned is to deny the intimacy of your surroundings. Surely, even you, at times, have felt the grand array; the swelling presence, and the chorus, crowding out your solo voice. You must note the way the soap dish enables you, or the window latch grants you freedom. Alertness is the hidden discipline of familiarity. The stairs are your mentor of things to come, the doors have always been there to frighten you and invite you, and the tiny speaker in the phone is your dream-ladder to divinity. Put down the weight of your aloneness and ease into the conversation. The kettle is singing even as it pours you a drink, the cooking pots have left their arrogant aloofness and seen the good in you at last. All the birds and creatures of the world are unutterably themselves. Everything is waiting for you.” -David Whyte . . . . . . . #davidwhyte #davidwhytepoetry #waiting #waitingforyou #autumndrive #drivingwithfriends #purplemountains #vermonting #thisisvermont #vtlife #vermontlife #ilovermont #deeppeace #silence #bigsky #dscolor #colorsofvermont (at North Thetford, Vermont) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3w92rilx6K/?igshid=vjvea69qj1h6

More words that arrive, unexpectedly, when you most need them, on a somber and heavy January’s night. Succor for the soul. Another in a series. #Repost @davidjwhyte ・・・ 'It Happens to Those Who Live Alone' from "Still Possible" © 2022 David Whyte -- Photo by @sattvaphoto #davidwhyte #poetry #poet #stillpossible -- It happens to those who live alone that they feel sure of visitors when no one else is there, until the one day and the one particular hour working in the quiet garden, when they realize at once that all along they have been an invitation to everything and every kind of trouble and that life happens by to those who inhabit silence https://www.instagram.com/p/Cnlc-zAL_BoJYPfj8SiKWZs_GdzUJfVzkWRvQA0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A perfect day in the park Let me share this piece by David Whyte Ground is what lies beneath our feet. It is the place where we already stand; a state of recognition, the place or circumstance to which we belong whether we wish to or not. It is what holds or supports us, but also what we do not want to be true, it is what challenges us, physically or psychologically, irrespective of our hopes for needs. It is the living, underlying foundation that tells us what we are, where we are, what season we are in, and what, no matter what we wish in the abstract, is about to happen in our body, in the world or in the conversation between the two. #ground #davidwhyte #consolations #hardlystrictlybluegrass2018 (at Hellman Hollow, Golden Gate Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/BoqtGgVFKts/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=f3kp68nvb0nr
