Okay, so now that my computer is working and power is good again, here are my real Toronto Ice Apocalypse updates:

Christmas will continue as planned

all my friends and family in the GTA are safe

most of them have power

we have plenty of food here and water is still running

my workplace survived as well

main roads are driveable, and you can still get by most sideroads

everything looks really pretty with an inch of sheer ice over practically every surface

Bad news:

there's still a lot of power line and fallen tree damage

our neighbours' huge tree was split in half and the fallen half is blocking a lot of the road, and that's just as far as I can see going out my front door, but I hear that the street I take to walk to and from the bus stop is completely blocked by fallen trees

my Nana's GO train is cancelled so she has to take the subway, although I'll be able to go pick her up in a little while so I'll feel better then

our driveway is solid ice

my brother, my dad and I spent at least an hour hacking away at the ice on our driveway with sledgehammers and axes and made very little progress, so hopefully more salt helps

seriously if Sam and Dean think digging graves is hard I'd like to see them hack away at that ice for an hour

But yeah this is our one-year late Toronto Ice Storm Apocalypse, otherwise we're doing okay and things should be getting better too.

meta about Mickey and Martha's life after JE :D

I have some pretty big headcanon with regard to what happens to bring Martha and Mickey together, and unfortunately it was never made canon because RTD fucked up some shit or something with COE.

Anyway, Mickey starts to work at Torchwood with Jack as a freelancer and gets to know Martha because she frequently visits Torchwood. They find they really hit it off, which comes as a bit of a shock to Jack. They go out to the pub and get drunk together, they go out for lunch together, Mickey fixes her washing machine when it starts acting up. 

And they talk. They talk about Rose and the Doctor a bit, but mostly it's about their own lives, things they've done, things they've seen, traumas and victories and all sorts of things. They talk about Martha's break up with Tom Milligan one night over a bottle of wine.

He freelances so he's often out and about, fighting alien threats and living a life of freedom that Martha envies against her better judgment. When he's in town, he jokingly offers to take her on as a partner in crime, but it's never serious, because he cares about her and she's relatively safe working for UNIT.

One day, she takes him up on that offer. Says she's resigned at UNIT because she needs to get a little more action and a little less paperwork.

So they travel the world together, big guns set on stun. And little by little, they fall for each other. They have so much in common, the mechanic and the doctor. They heal things. But they're also soldiers, forged in fire. 

He asks her to marry him out of the blue one day. They're in Morocco, eating kabobs at a little cafe. She grins into her mint tea.

After that, there's dealing with Martha's family. Mickey Smith is surprisingly not a hard man to sell to a woman's mother and father, especially because he's done so much to protect their little girl. Martha reminds them that she can easily protect herself, but it's nice to have a second set of eyes when out in the field.

Mickey isn't posh, he's rougher than Tom, but when Martha's with him, there's a spark in her that her parents haven't seen in years. And perhaps that's good enough.

They don't have kids; theirs is not a lifestyle conducive to raising children. But they're happy.
