FRIDAY FLASHBACK: “My Plan” by Ramos https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/my-plan …The Wayback Machine takes me to 1998. I was hired play keyboards for a recording session for a singer-songwriter named Ramos. He insisted I bring my Mellotron, which was like being asked to lug a refrigerator. Braving snowstorms and leaky boots, Ramos recording sessions took me and my Mellotron to 3 mysterious private studios in Pennsylvania and New Jersey (including one said to be owned by Whitney Houston—she wasn’t home). Ramos was Dave Ramos, formerly of a very dynamic alternative rock band called Blue Skye Mourning. Based in Williamsport, PA, BSM was the brainchild of three Ramos brothers. BSM were tagged as “the next big thing,” gigging relentlessly and putting on remarkable high-energy shows. Their 1st album rocketed up the FM radio playlists but, before your can say “U2” they abruptly disbanded. That left Dave with a passel of unfinished songs—enough for 2 solo albums under the moniker “Ramos.” At the sessions, Dave was very exact about parts. He didn’t want typical keyboard pads and, while the sessions were long, there was no tension or time-wasted. “My Plan” is a great example of Dave’s instincts as a songwriter and producer.

Listening to the Ramos CDs today (after years being in storage), it reminds me that the 90s produced some strong and innovative music. At the time the scene felt dark and scatterbrained to me, but in hindsight there were exciting sounds and visions coming out. Ramos vanished from the music grid a couple years later, but his music endures.

Spent a good amount of time with David. We went to H-E-B and made hotdogs watched some Disney+, had some good cuddling time and just being with each other was the best.
